  • Thank you to our patron Scott for another great pick! I don't know how to feel about the lyrics but the instrumental was tight. Nilsson on backing vocals... Paul on a "Vocal Kazoo" solo... Both ringo and Jim on drums I'm guessing... but I could be wrong. what a track! and it was so short. sigh.

Songs are stories, which seems to be forgotten these days. It's a song about a teenage boy falling in love, not Ringo as an adult rhapsodizing over a sixteen year old girl.

Ringo got a lot of "help from his friends" after the Beatles split up. A big reason why he had the most commercially successful post-Beatles career for quite a while, from the early to mid 70s.
And don't get me wrong, his songs, other than bloody "You're Sixteen" (and no....his voice just cannot make me think he's sixteen...😅), are great! Many options including "It Don't Come Easy", "Back Off Boogaloo", "Photograph", the "No No Song", etc.
Now I know the 70s were a "different time," but if you're going to introduce your girls to "You're Sixteen", please at least initially go with the 1960 original by American rockabilly singer Johnny Burnette.
The beauty of Ringo Starr, (aside from marrying bond girl Barbara Bach in 1980....lucky bastard) is that he obviously sung a number of kid-friendly songs. He also was the first person to narrate the classic childrens show "Thomas The Tank Engine" (after John had turned the role down in in his own "uniquely charming" way 🙄).

This was first performed by American rockabilly singer Johnny Burnette, whose version peaked at number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100 in December 1960 and number 3 in the UK in 1961. The song was covered by Ringo Starr in 1973 and this version reached number one in the US. I remember when Paul McCartney's Kazoo solo part came, every DJ in the country had to go buy a kazoo and join him every time the record got airplay...what a bunch of goofballs....

As far as solo Beatles albums go, "Ringo" is a MASTERPEICE!! As you mentioned, several members of THE BAND are on one track. George contributes to several tracks. Paul is on another track. And, we get the closest to a Beatle reunion on "I'm the Greatest", which features John, George and Ringo. John thought it would be taken as it being too full of himself, so he gave the song to Ringo. This album deserves a deep dive. Just an aside, I enjoy the cameos from the tiny adults. LOL! You have a beautiful family. Could a reaction video with your other half be a possibility? Just a thought. More solo Beatles would be a welcome thing. 😬

Not the best solo Ringo song to review, IMHO, but pretty cool performances. More of a novelty song that Ringo liked when he was younger. Much better choices include Ringo's classic "Photograph" (co-written by George) "Back off, Boogaloo," (Ringo's FU to Paul at the time) "It Don't Come Easy" (co-written by George) "Early 1970" (about where the splintering Beatles stood just before the breakup). For a brief time in the early 1970s, Ringo had the most hits of all the Beatles as solo artists! Crazy! This album was the first and only post-Beatles album that featured all four Beatles( you can see them all and Yoko on the album cover!) and is widely considered to be Ringo's best solo album, although of the new stuff he has put out is pretty great! He is still touring too with his All-Star band and totally rocking out which is pretty hard to believe. I have seen a few of his recent shows and he is still amazing on the drums. It was pretty cool to see Ringo playing drums on Santana's "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va" when former Santana keyboardist and singer Greg Rolie was part of Ringo's All-Star Band. .So sorry about your Dad, also. I know how it feels. I lost my Dad way too soon as well. Peace, man. Love your videos!

That was fun! I love this song. I gotta say, as a Gen-X woman (54y), it irks me when people make a big deal about this song. It's a cover song from the '60s. It's not like Ringo had just written it. Rock and Roll in those days was all about teenage love. The bulk of it’s audience was teenage girls. One of my favorite Beatles songs is "I Saw Her Standing There" which starts off: "Well she was just 17, and you know what I mean". The Beatles were like 21 when they wrote that. Are they supposed to stop playing it when they reach a certain age? I, myself am grateful to having heard Paul perform that song a few years ago. I sometimes sing that song at karaoke bars. Its not an expression of who I am. First of all, I'm not gay. And even if I was, I assure you, I would not be going after 17 year old girls. 😅 Thanks for your fun, insightful reviews.

Sixteen Candles by the Crests 1959. When You Were Sweet Sixteen by Al Jolson. It was written in 1898! People didn’t used to see everything as devious. They were just songs about growing up!

In January 1974, the song "You're Sixteen", taken from the album Ringo, hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The performance reunited Ringo Starr with his former Beatles bandmate Paul McCartney. Although McCartney is credited on the liner notes of the album Ringo as having played the solo on a kazoo, reviewer Michael Verity has quoted the song's producer Richard Perry as revealing that it wasn't actually a kazoo: "In fact, the solo on 'You're Sixteen,' which sounds like a kazoo or something, was Paul singing very spontaneously as we played that track back, so he’s singing the solo on that." Starr's version remains one of the few No. 1 singles to feature a 'kazoo-sound' solo. Harry Nilsson sang backing vocals on Starr's version; Nicky Hopkins is heard playing the piano, including going up and down the scale in the instrumental fade of the song. In Ringo's version, the melody and the chords were different in the bridge section, which led to a minor key, while the original version used only major keys. The ending featured Starr singing the chorus from Clarence "Frogman" Henry's hit song "(I Don't Know Why) But I Do" before breaking into a chorus of "What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor?" at the fade.

That's fascinating. I can so relate. My Honky Tonk band had a song that was light-hearted and fun and I talked my front man cohort into adding a kazoo solo to it, because we had done it once in practice and it was just hilarious. Once we got that down, it became even more of an audience favorite. But I love the fact that Paul is so vocally talented it was just him messing around.

Plus it's such a friggin cheesy song anyway, sung by such a loverable ex-Beatle, which is why I guess it had such mass appeal back when the loss of the beatles was still being felt....

I'm sorry but I have to rant, not at you L33 but all the wokeheads out there. WTF is wrong with people today? Innocent songs like these are all about young love, not pedophilia. Are we not supposed to acknowledge that teens are having sex with EACH OTHER before they're 18yrs old? I ask you; when did YOU lose your virginity (a phrase I loathe but not sure how else to put it). You also have to remember that when songs like these were penned people actually dated, usually numerous times, before giving into their hormonal desires. When a level of exclusivity was desired they went 'steady', maybe the guy gave the girl his class ring to wear on a chain, and he went to meet her parents before going out. Now thanks to public pressure and threats of litigation sites like this go overboard with their policing.

    * Photograph * ❤️
……please pay attention on the Lyrics on both track, ❤️ maybe you could do a double shot of Ringo next week 🙏🏻

"Photograph" will definitely stick in your head. It was another of his several hits. I love the Ringo stuff, I really do. And I loved the stuff that he sang with the Beatles from the very beginning.
His take on the classic Buck Owens song "Act Naturally" is just so sloppy and fun. It's just so Ringo.
But an example of Ringo on lead vocals while drumming very early on in the Beatles is "Boys". And they had been doing this live in Hamburg Germany well before it ever got recorded after they exploded a year or so later. It really is a banger for that time. This is the 2009 remaster:

People get their panties in bunch over a sixteen year old. Is two more years older really that different? Dan Bullock was a United States Marine and the youngest U.S. serviceman killed in action during the Vietnam War, dying at the age of 15. (December 21, 1953 - June 7, 1969)

Ringo's previous two albums didn't sell much so his former bandmates helped him out for this album. They were in the process of repeating the formula in late 1980 but John was murdered. John had written "Nobody Told Me" for Ringo. It appeared on John's posthumous album , Milk & Honey.

You're Sixteen was written for the rockabilly recording genre. it was primarily a southern country genre. And remember Jerry Lee Lewis had a few years prior married his 14-year-old cousin. That did not go over well when Lewis was touring in England. They made him leave.

"I'm gonna assume the guy singing is also sixteen"... well, back in the day, and even still... sixteen-year-old girls weren't all that interested in sixteen-year-old boys. They wanted the guys on the posters on their bedroom walls. lol

I always loved Ringo since I first seen him on Ed Sullivan. Dude I am a Star Wars junkie for sure, as well as my kids and grandkids they all love Star Wars as much as I do.

Its a 50's doo-wop song about teen love, all songs from that era were about teen love. Like this: ua-cam.com/video/o-Xvgv92GBc/v-deo.htmlsi=Im4wdsHXgHfx3qeL
Everyone has to take everything so literally now and twist everything. That said, this probably hasn't aged well. Its just a fun song, but the way society is now it can be seen as cringy.

"I'm the Greatest" was written by John specifically FOR Ringo & the album which it's on. Same goes for Paul, who wrote "Six O'Clock" for the same album. George co-wrote some of the songs on the album too. Needless to say, it's a great f'ing album & was a big hit.

This whole album is a blast! Funny period John, Ringo, Harry, Keith Moon all living together, working on Ringo's album, Harry's album (Pussycats), Johns album (Rock and Roll), partying all night, the Hollywood Vampires, hanging out with Elton John and David Bowie and Alice Cooper. Paul visited and they jammed with Stevie Wonder (Toot and a Snore)... Ringo and Harry started to make an animated movie about them partying on the town: ua-cam.com/video/7CJ4XgUCiU0/v-deo.htmlsi=vEsrbXo8gfJphJdi and they made a great rock and roll vampire movie called Son of Dracula! ua-cam.com/video/1o9zHsyl-3U/v-deo.htmlsi=SivCnGQ7LPCJBbPG

Carrie Fisher was once "dating" Paul Simon. The couple initially met in the late '70s but didn't wed until August 1983. They divorced less than a year later, in July 1984. After their split, Simon admitted that "all types of mistakes" had been made during his marriage to Fisher.
