- So the video I had called this "One After" but when I looked it up it was called "One After 909"... so my apologies if I don't say the full name in the very beginning lol thank you to our patron Laura A for this great beatles request. I honestly really liked different things in both versions... such as ringo's drumming in BOTH good god he had his wheaties for these takes. The second one is a remaster of the rooftop concert take and wow.... it's so different yet still the same. So strange lol.

In the rooftop concert, you can see the joy on the faces of John and Paul’s faces as they play this song from their teenage years.
Re: Ringo...when working with Jeff Lynn who was producing, Lynn kept insisting Ringo use a click trak in his headphones. Finally Ringo had enough of that and told him something like , F**k your click track, I AM the click trak" and had been for years on countless Beatles records and beyond.
Similar thing happened with U2 with the same outcome lol! Someone insisted that Larry Mullen Jr. use a metronome. He replied 'I am the metronome' Both Ringo and Larry were correct. :D
Lennon wrote this at age 16 back in the 50's. It was re-worked and released on "Let it Be" in 1970, their final album, Lee.
The first one was recorded in 1962. One of the earliest songs John and Paul wrote. The second one is from the Let It Be sessions in 1969. They decided to go back to a few of their early songs to complete the album.
John said he wrote it when he was 17. Paul may have helped him finish it, but it was John's song.
The Anthology version was recorded on March 5, 1963, during the same sessions as "From Me To You" and "Thank You Girl".
So mind boggling. Like two different bands and there's only 6 years apart. My favourite 'live' performance by The Beatles (Rooftop). George's solo smokes.
Often George get dissed for not being as good as "fill in the blank" yet those who came after him were influenced by him. He was an all around guitarist from the solo in Til There was You and And I Love Her, to his Grammy award winning slide guitar solo on his last album Brainwashed...The instrumental "Marwa Blues" went on to receive the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Yes here he smokes, and later had this superb slide guitar playing that none of his contemporaries bothered with much. Ha shas received 6 Grammys during his solo career.

This is a song that John wrote and the Beatles performed it many times in Hamburg, Germany, before they became famous. For their LAST album, John dusted it off, and they had fun reimagining for their swan song.

The first version didn't have keyboards. And that is a terrific version from when they were young.
You can really hear the skiffle roots in this particular song, which I believe is from the earliest phase of writing their own material. It certainly sounds that way. Glad to hear the studio version for the first time.

John said he wrote it when he was 17. Paul could have helped him finish it, but it was John's song. They played it a lot in Hamburg. He wanted to write a song like some of the popular songs at the time about freight trains and such.
The first song Lennon and McCartney wrote together! And the rest, is history!
John has said that he wrote it himself when he was 17, so I don't know if Paul helped or not, although sounds like not.

Let It Be (album) was their last released album, (recorded in 68 released in 70) The Beatles were tired of their endless studio tricks and effects and wanted an album that represented them just playing as a band, no extensive overdubs, just a live band recording (as close as possible).
I have always like the earlier version better. It felt like it is rock & roll at its purest. In the 80s, Elvis Costello did a live acoustic cover of this song with Paul McCartney singing back up vocals and the chorus.

What a great lively dance worthy song the naked version , the rooftop performance really rocks! Billy added so much to these sessions. I feel real happy, listening to that, and was kind of expecting to hear Danny boy
You NEED to hear the "Live at the Beeb" recordings -- kick-assed band!
1st version, they are being "directed" in the studio. For the 2nd version, they are relaxed, sitting back and playing this almost as a lark, in the middle of tons of ten second covers and pieces of old songs from the 50s, that they would spout off for fun.
IIn the frist version they are doing a lot of fooling around before getting to the final version.

Lee I was watching you Woodstock playlist & I didn't see Joe Cocker covering the Beatles With A Little Help From My Friends. If you haven't seen it, it's a must. Definitely one of the highlights of Woodstock. And if you've never seen Joe perform, it's a sight to see. He puts everything he's got into a song. Check it out.

1st version is total Chuck Berry style. The Rolling Stones and the Annals to have any chance of making it big.als were doing a lot of R and B at the time like this, but the money was in the Beatles pop rock songs for the girls who screamed for them later. Make no mistake , the Beatles were a hard driven leather jacketed rock group in the dirty clubs and strip joints of Hamburg [and clubs of Liverpool] doing this kind of stuff all night long, 8 hours a night, before they changed their image on advice of their manager Brian Epstein if they wanted to make it big. They intentionally wrote the kinds of tunes that would sell, they were NOT just a "boy band" as so many know it all jerks call them for their early days in the national spotlight. they were tough and they paid their dues for years before fame.
Yes, they more than paid their dues, especially over in Hamburg. It's one of the reasons they were such a tight band, and seemed so well-rehearsed. They were well-rehearsed through sheer experience performing nights on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg's two different clubs. John wrote this song when he was 17, according to him. I also read that train songs were big at the time, so that's the reason for the topic of the song.

There are also other versions out there. 2 demo's from 1960. 2 rehearsals from 1962. And one from the Let It Be Super Deluxe set with Billy on piano.
I almost included one of the short rehearsals where they keep messing up and blaming each other. lol

You should try the heavy version of this song by Laibach. They sneak in the riff from Smoke On The Water at the end of the guitar solo.

Billy Preston's keyboard playing gives the "Let it Be" version so much Lift & Brightness 🙂
Try a listen to Anthology 1 where they were trying to record this on a break in touring appearances and radio shows, but it kept breaking down. Then George Martin was able to piece parts of two attempts together to make a complete version (which was never released) so we can hear what it would have sounded like in 64 if they ever did a complete version. John wrote this years before the 64 attempts.
I believe it was '63, and yes, John wrote it when he was 17. :)

The 1969 version of One After 909 is a throwback to the original home tape recording version from '60 (with Stu Sutcliffe on bass), and reflects The Beatles' roots in skiffle music. Personally I prefer the Merseybeat arrangement from '63, but the song is great in any version. One of the earliest Lennon/McCartney songs, and they already had the goods when they wrote it.
John said that he wrote it when he was 17 so doesn't sound like Paul had anything to do with writing this one. I like the slower one a lot as well! The fast one has some nice elements, too, with the piano.
@@lauraallen55 Yes indeed, right on! In the Rolling Stone interview of 1970, John cited 'One After 909' as an example of a song he wrote separately from Paul even in the early days of the Beatles. He made a comment too during Get Back that they were doing the song so that he'd be [represented] on the album.

That's a recording from the Hamburg days. Pete Best was the drummer. Good display of why he was replaced with Ringo.

Recorded at Abbey Road in 1963 at the 'From Me To You' single session. Ringo on drums. Pete Best had been given the boot by then. As well as recording 'Thank You Girl', according to Lewisohn they wanted to do 'What Goes On' but didn't have time. How he knows that I'm not sure. Maybe heard them talking about it because he listened to the session tapes. He writes that John at the end of 'One After 909' asked George "what kind of solo was that?"
Your daughter might like "Dance Tonight" off of Memory Almost Full. It was a song he wrote trying to learn the mandolin in his kitchen with his daughter Beatrice dancing around in the kitchen. BTW the "Naked" album (from 2003) , Paul had organized is superior to the official Let It Be album. Paul had all that Phil Spector over production stripped off.

I'm not sure if the Naked version sounds the same, but my favorite version is the one from the original LET IT BE album. It sounds much richer.

The first Let It Be album version was produced by Phil Spector, the Let It Be... Naked album version, the project was supervised by Paul Mccartney, who did not like the production of the original album, as it did not faithfully represent what the group wanted at the time. .
No, Paul didn't like it, but although he initiated the remixing of the album, George Martin oversaw and produced it.

@@SANPARR1 Yes, that deeply displeased Paul what was done to his own song. What deeply displeased me was what Spector did to John's song Across the Universe. That was vastly improved by George Martin!

Let it be Naked is VASTLY better than the original album. It also contains Don't Let Me Down which Phil Spector left off the original
Fly on the Wall and Maggie May were two other differences between them.
What Phil Spector did to Across the Universe alone ruined it.

The Long and Winding Road is one that you'd hear the difference between what the Beatles wanted and what Phil Spectre released.

Guitar strings were heavier early on. Guitarist started using lighter banjo strings until manufacturers caught on.
If you're looking for a fun Beatles song for Danica, look no further than the Yellow Submarine LP. All Together Now is another joyful song written by McCartney for the younger fans. I know my niece enjoyed it way back then - she's 48 yrs old now.
Paul wrote most of the song, but John wrote the middle part. :)

@se6369 I'm not claiming it's a masterpiece, but it does contain some entertainment value as far as I'm concerned. It's unreasonable to expect every one of their songs to be topshelf quality.
@lauraallen55 Definitely a Paul song without a doubt. There are two main things I enjoy about this song, one is when they gradually pick up the tempo towards the end of the song, and the other is listening to all four of them (plus a few misc extras) singing together. I find there is something particularly joyful, being that all of their vocals seem to blend perfectly to create a unique resonance. The best example of this is on Yellow Submarine.

Yes, it is a 'Paul' song definitely without a doubt. However, John *did* write the middle part. It was common for them to contribute to one another's songs. Like John's masterpiece A Day in the Life had a middle part contributed by Paul.
Most of the "Anthology" series are out takes and alternative or partial pieces of songs.
The first failed attempt in 64 ended because Paul was messing up. John said, "What are you doing?" Paul replies, "I can't do it, its murder. I don't have a plectrum." "Where's your suitcase?" " I don't have it. " Roadie Mal butts in, "Paul. I ask if you wanted your suitcase." (I may have a few words wrong here but you can see how hectic their schedule was in 64 with several concerts a day, radio interviews and a few minutes granted for studio time plus travel time. They worked like dogs.) After he got his plectrum they tried again but it broke down and George Martin was able to piece the good parts together for Anthology

I prefer the Let It Be Naked versions of everything--didn't care much for the Spector production on that album.

Almost 10 years between these versions....Let It Be Naked is so much better than the Specter-produced version, thanks to Paul and George Martin.
Mostly thanks to Sir George Martin - what a talent in production! None of the Beatles liked the rushed Spector version, but Paul was especially unhappy about his Long and Winding Road song. Luckily, all the excess noise got stripped away from John's Across the Universe too!
John and Paul were the Quarrymen
Paul wasn't an original member. He joined later. John formed the band, and it included his friends from school (the band was named after his school) Pete Shotton, Colin Hanton, Rod Davis, and Len Garry. This was in 1956, and Paul didn't join until July 1957.Then, George joined in early 1958. Stuart Sutcliffe, John's best friend ultimately joined the group (after the other original members left), and he and John came up with the name The Beatles. The Quarrymen even played at the Cavern (before Paul joined) for awhile!

@@sydnoids1 They were the Quarrymen, then Johnny and the Moon Dogs, then the Silver Beatles for a few months, then toured for a bit as Johnny Gentle's Backing Band, then The Beatles.

The naked one is a step or two faster than the first one but yeah for the most part they are identical. The piano was great in the second one

In Let it Be - Naked, 'naked' doesn't mean what you normally think of naked to mean in music. This was Let it Be with the Phil Spector gloss stripped off. I prefer Spector's version. Naked sounds boring and dull to me. The Long and Winding Road sounds a little syrupy but I'm not too into it anyway.
In my opinion this is a great candidate for the 2nd worst Beatles song ("Revolution #9" being the worst) 😅
Sorry Lee, but I must disagree with your assessment of the two versions of this song. To me, the difference between the two were akin to night and day. The original version (1963) was flat out missing soul. Paul's bass playing is an entry-level performance; George's guitar solo is rather lame and not very cohesive; John's effort is passable at best; and Ringo's playing is rather basic. And it must be noted: there is no piano accompaniment in that recording. The song lacked energy from start to end and it sounds as though they were ready for a nap. The 1969 version, in contrast, was a complete turn around. My toes automatically start tapping along whenever I hear the newer version due. Ofc, all four Beatles stepped up their effort with a tighter performance and obviously a quicker tempo. Billy Preston's keyboard contribution certainly elevates the song to a higher level. The earlier version was mundane, whereas this one sounded like they were having fun.
Not so much a disagreement as a difference of opinion. :) I like aspects of both versions. The fact that John wrote it when he was 17 is pretty cool too, regardless of what tempo they decided to play it in. The newer version is a throwback to the original they performed in the early days, even as Quarrymen and without Paul on some occasions, I believe.
Sadly, one of my least favorite Beatles tunes.
