    You weren't wrong when you referred to the 22lr silvertip as a rebranded round, even thought it's not a typical hp. They were originally sold as a varmint round and called the Varmint HE. And personally I think it's kind of irresponsible of them to market a purposely frangible varmint load for SD. I've tested these also and while the base does penetrate adequately, what's left after the fragments peel off in the first couple inches is only 23.5 grains.

      I looked it up. You are right. Winchester Varmint HE 37 gr Segmenting. Same bullet when it's zoomed in. The Silvertip is coated in some silver colored wash, so I guess one could argue it's different, but silver colored copper wash and the 1,400 FPS rating expressed through a handgun and "1,060 FPS" slapped on the box is pretty far from innovation.

    The closeups of the gel block and initial penetration depth measurements/analysis of the performance, that camera was very shaky from the wrong settings being on. Any attempt to fix it post production failed. There's also some secondary camera shake with the steel target but it's not as noticeable. Most people won't notice, but if you have had vertigo be careful!

    Really nice comparison. The .22 LR ST seemed to work somewhat reliably out of my 1980s vintage Beretta Bobcats. The .38 Special seemed to perform about the same as it always has since gurus started testing them in gel in the late 80s. My favorite ST is still the 145 grain .357 Mag version. Elegant round.

    Personally, I think Winchester makes the lowest quality defensive ammo out of the big american ammo brands. I tried a couple boxes of 22lr Silvertips and the shitty stuff had at least one dud and at least 2 low powered charges in every magazine, on top of that, the stuff stank like Aquila made ammo. Federal's Punch (22lr and 22 mag) never had that issue, Hornady's Critical Defense (22 mag) never had that issue, and Speer's Gold Dot (22 mag) never had that issue. I would like the 22LR silvertip if it was made by someone else.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  9 місяців тому +2

      I'd say Federal is the best, then Speer. I have seen some pretty bad stuff from Remington though, albeit they don't fancy up the box and hike the price like Winchester does.

      Winchester should get a new name. WhateverWorks lol. Out of all the companies, they seem to have the most random designs, and they market them to death. Like Defender/PDX1, Ranger, Ranger T, Silvertip, USA, Super X, Big Bore, USA Ready, Ranger One, Black Talon, SXT and the list goes on and on. Compare that to like Speer - Gold Dot, G2, Lawman...

    22LR definitely benefits from staying in one piece. The 38 Special didn't do too badly. I wish those projectiles were available as reloading components. All I can seem to find these days is XTPs.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  9 місяців тому +1

      I'd say the .22 is one of those things that can be looked at in different ways. In one piece, the penetration would be less, shedding those pieces basically turns it into the 29 gr Federal Punch. But it seems misleading a bit, as i'm not sure going an inch or two more in gel justifies lowering the projectile mass, and that mass might have tumbled or done something more nasty.

    You should do a review on silvertip and the super x power point with the herritage rough rider vs a semi auto. I got a herritage rough rider an use both but trust the silvertip a little more for defense. (An the silvertip i bought say 1080fps)

    Just purchased today a Taurus 865 38 special.The firing pin fell out on the first dry fire jamming up the gun.I removed the side plate and discovered there was no retaining pin installed for the firing, also number on side plate did not match gun serial number one digit off. • @GunSam
      @GunSam  9 місяців тому +1

      That is really messed up. I always tell people, a gamble on Taurus has a 50% chance of having something useable, but never make it your first gun because you need at least one more for when the Taurus has to go back.

    I only buy ammo sold in a 50 round boxes even in defensive ammo can't beat Federal train and protect not the absolute best defensive ammo it performs well and are very reliable dependable same can be said with Gold Dots if needing center fired handgun ammo 9mm 45acp 40sw 10mm 357 SIG and CCI mini mags if needing 22lr ammo because it has been the most reliable in all my 22lr rim fired handguns and rifles remember a FMJ that fires cycles and ejects and chambers the next round without any hang ups is better than a JHP that doesn't if your life is depending on it so my ammo pick for quality defensive ammo that is somewhat cost effective would be Federal protect and train - Speer Gold Dots - CCI mini mags only ones sold in 50 round boxes no outrageous priced 20 round boxes I'm sure its great ammo just can"t afford it

    Again, i don't see how barrel travel is a relevant metric to determine fairness of a test.
    Not that the miniscule difference matters much here, but it means giving the already longer cartridge a longer overall system length breech to muzzle when - correct me if i'm wrong - the ideal comparison would be between same sized guns?
    If one cartridge requires 3 inches of casing to do its thing, do you give it a 6" barrel for fairness reasons?

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  9 місяців тому

      I honestly have no idea what you are talking about.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  9 місяців тому

      One, EXACTLY. A 3" revolver and 4" semi auto is the SAME size gun. I am not measuring from breech to muzzle, I am measuring from bullet nose to muzzle. Except for short semi auto cases in a semi auto caliber revolver, a .38 Special/.357 Mag is about the same nose to muzzle in a 3" revolver as a 4" semi auto, same goes for 4" revolver and 5" semi auto and so on. SAME size gun, same bullet travel nose to muzzle.

    • @davidh9659
      @davidh9659 9 місяців тому

      @@GunSam Yeah, but that's a coincidence when comparing semis and wheel guns in this case.
      You don't cut down half an inch of barrel length in a moon-clipped 9mm revolver because it would have an unfair advantage in the length of its acceleration path.
      No, you take the same gun ideally with the same dimensions and see which caliber does better with what is offered.
      That usually means breach to muzzle.

I have indeed after the fact, went into my comments where there are 'held for review" and "inappropriate/spam" comments, and most of the time they are comments like "good video!" or random stuff like whatever you would have said. The only time I ever delete comments is when someone leaves one that is disrespectful like "come on idiot, I don't agree, and you are dumb and here is why" etc etc, because of the tone.
