    This is the most comprehensive review of the R5's stills capability yet. Kudos. I already bought the R6. Very happy. I'm a year away (budget) from the R5 or whatever high-res stills-oriented body Canon releases. But I expect to be equally pleased when I get one or the other. Canon's bad press re overheating is from their own marketing miscue.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому

      I agree on the marketing issue. Canon hyped that aspect of the camera beyond its actual capabilities.

    • @NeXMaX
      @NeXMaX 4 роки тому

      At the same time, it is somewhat understood why they hyped the video features as much as they did. If they just marketed it as a phenomenal stills camera, it’d get some attention but probably not to the degree that they may have wanted, especially since the trend for mirrorless is to create “hybrids”, cameras that can do video almost as well as stills.
      While the R5 didn’t quite live up to the bombastic hype for video, I still think it is more competent for some video work than many people realize. Obviously, there are better video-centric options if your video needs are more comprehensive (and I don’t mean dedicated video cameras, moreso video-oriented hybrids like Sony’s a7Siii and Panasonic’s S1H) and the modes that go 8K or utilize an 8K supersample have limited use-cases at this point, but the line-skipped full-frame 4K (or the S35 oversampled 4K) looks to work fine enough for those who might not have comprehensive video needs and are probably just after a photo-camera that can double as a decent video rig on the side.

    As a Sony shooter that has been waiting for a Canon mirrorless body worthy of grabbing to experience the amazing RF glass, I finally grabbed the R6. Very nice body and the video limitations aren’t a problem for me as I’m more of a stills shooter.
    Canon and Sony seem to be the 2 front runners in the industry so I’ll juggle both systems until one seems to pull away far enough to drop the other.

      @@youknowwho9247 I’ve been on the Sony system since: NEX-5n, A7ii, A7Rii, A7Riii, A7iii. At the moment I only have the A7iii. I ended up selling off A7Riii because I didn’t need 42mp and there wasn’t a way to reduce to small or medium RAW (not compressed and uncompressed). So I can comment on a7iii vs R6. I can say that I don’t really see a big different in my casual shooting, both were great to use. It was more understanding the AF modes and areas available and how to use them. I would also add that it appears the R6 focus in dark settings was a tad more consistent. Regardless, AF isn’t an issue on either.

    Hi Dustin. I was going to get an R5 but a few things delayed it. Watched the review ages ago and finally got the £££ and bought one to replace my old 1DX and 7D2 of the back of your review. I am totally stunned as to what this camera can do. Its small, typical Canon easy to use . But what it can do, stunned, the image quality is so far ahead of what I have. Its made photography easier and the quality just better. Thanks for your review, it convinced me and its been worth every penny.

I was using both the R and the 90D for different things and really wanted to simplify my gear to a one camera setup. The R5 really does it all well regardless of genre. Hey Dustin,
    I have been a professional commercial photographer most of my adult life. Currently doing outdoor scenics and working my Instagram “hallbergphoto”. Being in the process of replacing my entire camera system, reviews like yours are priceless, informative and to the point without hype, thank you. Your are a definite standout on the Internet and UA-cam.
    I did purchase a Canon EOS R about a year ago and the autofocus did not work so had it refurbished by Canon, it’s an OK camera with some great menu options and overall workflow but lack in much of the actual implementation. I have been using a Sony a7III and once the menus are customized and set, work great.
    After your extremely informative review I will check out the EOS R5.
    One deal-breaker on the R is the Histogram view in the viewfinder, it is large and can only be seen together with the also large and obnoxious level, which in most cases is not needed. On the Sony I have a small gray Histogram at the bottom Right of the viewfinder and as it is not in the way of composing never turned off.
    Thank you again; you efforts are very much appreciated and a great asset making a camera purchase selection.
    Regards,
    Stefan

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому

      That's a valid point about the histogram. It is oversized. I personally like having the level, but would like a much smaller histogram to accompany it. And yes, the EOS R has some admirable qualities, and some other areas where it was left really incomplete.

    Congrats on another professional, unbiased review!
    Congrats to Canon for making such a well engineered camera.
    I thought you gave the right balance of perspective to what this camera can/can’t do.
    Yes it overheats in video, but stills are it’s main priority. If video was the priority, they
    Easily make it bigger and allow for external heat sinks.
    I have an SonyA7R3, not because I wanted a small Mirrorless, but because I
    Feel DSLR, has been taken as far as possible, but Mirrorless can offer so much more.
    I supported Sony, as without them, the big 2 would still be pushing DSLR.
    Sadly I doubt I will purchase the R5 as it’s high price and travel restrictions,
    mean I have an expensive camera to shoot the backyard.
    Maybe in a couple of years!

    I tested out the R5 three weeks ago. Nice camera. But being a DSLR user, I'm not used to the smaller chassis, the R5 doesn't feel like a full camera in the hands, and the controls a little too close to one another. I would prefer a larger chassis (the size of their regular DSLR) for better (personal) ergonomics, and also having a larger chassis would allow space for a larger battery to make up for the much lower shot capacity with each battery charge. It's hard to get used to getting only 300-400 shots per battery vs 1000 shots on a 5D.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

    One thing I have been studying lately and good to remember when using higher pixel density sensors, like the 45Mp in R5, is DLA effect.
    Like with the RF 600mm or 800mm f/11 lense on the R5 you don't get any more resolving power by adding a teleconverter.
    With R5 the DLA effect begins already at f/6,6 (airy disc 2x pixel diameter). But it's really hard to notice so the typical formula used gives a value of f/8,2 (airy disc 2,5x pixel diameter). It's typically considered that DLA takes "full effect" when the airy disc from the diffraction reach 3x pixel diameter - in the R5's case at f/9,8.
    Even though the "maximum" DLA value is f/9,8 there is no real harm in using f/11 lens. But for easier composition/viewing it's probably better to use the APS-C crop mode instead of adding a teleconverter.
    Please notice that these DLA numbers are totally different for R6. They are: f/9,8, f/12,4 and f/14,6. So with f/11 lens on R6 you could possibly get some additional resolving power by using a 1,4x TC.
    Here is a link to DLA calculator. You can use any camera model with correct sensor size and just type in the proper resolution.
    www.photopills.com/calculators/diffraction

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому +1

      That's true, which is why the F11 lenses strike me as, well, odd. The idea of sticking a TC on a lens with a maximum aperture of F11 already just seems wacky to me.

    • @tkermi
      @tkermi 4 роки тому +1

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Yeah, and that 800mm has so long minimum focusing distance. So if it were 400mm f/5,6 instead it could be used in lower light and focus closer. And then, if so chosen, by adding 2x TC would result 800mm f/11 but still with closer minimum focusing distance.

  • @trevor9934

    You always present an extremely professional, detailed review, thank you. To me the negative hype about the overheating is the belief that the R5 is a video camera. To me it is a stills camera that does some (impressive video). It flies in the face of logic to ask a camera with a very small form factor and weather (and thus thermal) sealing to dissipate the heat generated by high-resolution video. If videographers really want a video camera to use for extended periods, the newer EOS R5c seems like a much better bet, or an actual dedicated video camera.
    I had to smile at your comment about it being cooler in Canada - recent record temperatures experienced in my home province of BC and those of Alberta and Saskatchewan are showing that is not necessarily the case any more.
    I have a couple of R6 units and I love the low-light performance of these cameras, but I am likely going to reach for an R5 to get the extra resolution so I can crop for my wildlife shots. For me the IBIS+ILIS and focus-tracking are game changers.

    FYI if you are looking for a combined L-bracket and grip extension for the R5, I took a risk and bought the Stabil LCR5. While I had never heard of the company and the finish isn't world class, the machining is great and it is actually a more secure fit than the SmallRig L-Bracket for the A7RIII that I believe you also use. The Stabil costs over $100 and comes from Vietnam, so value isn't as strong with SmallRig products, but I don't know of any other competing option with the same features and the increased security of its attachment makes it worth it.

    I’ve recently found its added new life into some of my older non-stabilized EF and EF-S lenses. One in particular is the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 crop lens. Hey Dan, some interesting tidbits I have learned following various professionals in their usage of the EOS R5.
    The EOS R5 seems to have a serious rolling shutter effect with straight lines and fast-moving objects. Dan Szpakowski, the New York Jets team Photographer, pointed out that the camera is basically unusable for most of his work because the issue has been so bad. Unknown if it is specific to his unit.
    The other issue for some professionals is the undisclosed features of the cameras FPS dropping to 10 FPS mechanical when the battery drops below 60% as well as it dropping to 10 FPS with WiFi-enabled. Some people are also not thrilled that the $900 WiFi grip doesn't give any added battery life as you need one battery to power the camera and then another for the grip itself.
    Just some interesting info I've seen talked about between many professionals who have been using the camera. I think if the rumor proves true that Canon is moving to a global shutter sensor with the inevitable R1 flagship, the rolling shutter effect is a moot point. But the FPS cripple hammer moves need to be resolved.
    Great video as always.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому

      Interesting, as I specifically testing rolling shutter and didn't find it to significant. I think the a9 and its electronic shutter is marginally better, but not by much. I haven't seen the FPS drop with lower battery life as well, though even if it were true, it would still match the a9II's mechanical shutter burst. I'm skeptical about that claim, however, as I'm pretty sure I've shot burst under those conditions without the frame rate dropping. I haven't tested with WiFi enabled, as I don't actually have an application for that.

      Hi Justin, you're right. The behavior of the two Samyang AF lenses is erratic. There are firmware updates to address those (and an upcoming one to enable IBIS), but unfortunately they require the Lens Station to update them. This was a mistake on Samyang's part. They should have just put a micro-usb port on the lens itself like Viltrox. Samyang is sending me an RF Lens Station, but they are actually hard to find right now. This is a fail on their part.

    Great review, as always, Dustin! The R5 is the best FF mirrorless body nowadays, if we don't count a more "niche" vendors, such as Leica when it comes to image quality (only). As you've mentioned Sony, their problem is not in the bodies, despite there is still plenty of things to improve, especially on the software side, but their main problem are the lenses and the very narrow mount, derived from the APS-C. The last has been their biggest engineering mistake.
    Canon absolutely kills it with the RF range. To add to that, the Canon also pulls way more micro-contrast from the lens&body combination, despite the very high level of corrections against (virtually) everything in their RF range. The quality of the RF-L glass is up to 95% (if not more) of what Leica offers in their highest price segment with the newest lenses, but one will pay far less for the RF.
    P.S. The only thing which leaves me with a bit of a bitter taste is the use of Lightroom in the review. Like we discussed before - with Capture One you will see much more things in the images :)
    Thanks and keep up the great work.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому

      Hi Alexander, as someone who has reviewed dozens of FE mount lenses, I have to disagree with your statement regarding the lens and the FE mount. The Sony 135mm F1.8 GM is the sharpest lens I've ever reviewed, bar none. The Sigma 35mm F1.2 DN (for Sony FE) is as sharp or sharper than any of the RF F1.2 lenses. I think the RF mount is great and I do think there is a lot of potential to it, but the tired internet meme that the FE mount is just an APS-C mount just doesn't hold up in the real world.

    • @alexanderivanoff
      @alexanderivanoff 4 роки тому

      @@DustinAbbottTWI, let's just agree to disagree. The FE mount is derived from their APS-C and this is a fact, not a meme.
      If I may stress on the fact, that your comment is simply not honest, which is surprising me. Maybe you have your (commercial) reasoning for that.
      I've been actively shooting the A7R3 with their flagship primes for a year and I can tell you that they have nothing to do with the RF-L primes - the difference is *this* big.
      Their ZP 50/1.4 is softer at f/2 than the RF50 wide open to 1.2. Their 85GM can't even touch the RF85/1.2. Do I need to mention they even don't have any truly great 35mm prime. The 135GM maybe a sharp lens (I also know it well), but it has the most ugly defocus character in any 135mm I have ever seen - swirly, similar to the old Russian cheap lenses. So, enough said on Sony lenses - 8 years and the Minolta know-how behind and still - a chaos. This is (lens lineup) where Canon really shines. Sigma doesn't even have to be present in this discussion.
      As you will I am sure you will agree, the sharpness (read resolution, as sharpness is not measurable thing) is only one of the components that defines a "great lens", but not *the only* component. To me it is even the least important one. This is a long topic and I don't want to turn this into Sony vs Canon. We all know what works well and what's not...
      P.S. If you really can't see a huge difference between the FE and RF-L primes, especially wide open, you must seriously consider switching to C1, which is the industry standard for high-end imaging not by accident, mate.
      Cheers and keep up the great work!

I am very curious how the R5 with an AA filter compares to the A7R3 which does not have one. A super sharp EF lens (like the Laowa 100mm Macro for example) mounted to both would be a very interesting test to see just how much detail is lost from the AA filter bs how much moire (beyond what is correctable) is removed and determining the cost/benefit if having the AA filter.
