      Most people aren't annoyed by manele, unless people blast it everywhere. At a party some manele are the best songs to vibe, dance and have fun on.

    Apparently, you have to be Romanian to actually understand the message, or at least know the historical context, Puya is singing here about the loss of the national entity and the imitation of foreign cultures, plus the beginning of detesting its own origins. This song have a dark face, 'we' used to see America as the country of all possibilities, and when we made analogy with the little Romania, many began to hate that country where they were born, especially after the crisis of 2008 (the crisis which in Romania extended until 2012-13), when a lot of Romanians went across the borders of the country to work and bring money into the country for they family. It was a tough time for some of us. That's why a lot of people got into rap, that was their peace, that made them forget about poverty and shortcomings. Paraziții were among them at first, like the Moromeții or the Bucharest Underground (today knowns as BUG Mafia).

    The thing that further drives the song’s point across is that he sings in Romanian and uses English words all the time. An equivalent example in English would be “Man, you’re loco” instead of “Man, you’re crazy”, except that American english terminology has found its way into a lot of other countries’ vocabulary.
    When he’s singing “You’re no longer going to work, you’re going to the job”, he uses the Romanian term for “work”, “muncă” but he literally says “job”. And the song is full of these pairs of words, the “old” Romanian word vs the americanized term.

  • @davidsiatatgaming
    @davidsiatatgaming 3 роки тому +29

    The first verse covers American stuff that Romania was trying to absorb in its daily life, second verse show what Romania was losing through that, somewhat. The song mainly covers how Romania tries to copy American lifestyles without the basic requirements for such, and changes in daily aspects of life, like language and activities.
    It was released in early 2000s from what I can remember, as it was everywhere in my childhood.

    Dude, the song is 10 years old, so the lyrics back then made much more sense. And let me explain something, a lot of the verses have sense if you are Romanian and know the subtility behind the lyrics. Let me give you just a simple example from the song : WHEN He says that the scientist that discovered something are from America, he makes reference about the discovery of the insulin ( by a Romanian - Nicolae Paunescu - you can check that fact ) but because of the communist context, the paper could not go out, and the americans make the discovery public and so on. And this song is full of examples. PEACE !

      It is still true my man, that is the beauty of revisiting his songs, we havent progressed one little bit. In fact we are more Americanised now than ever. And yeah, cant blame him for not understanding the subtlety, the whole song is about switching from Romanian to English which makes it inherently hard to translate and then there is all of the cultural context on top of that. I mean, this dude didn’t even know about Nadia Comaneci (seriously dude, you could have Googled it during filming the video at least) and what manele are at that time, how tf could he be expected to recognise Iliescu s speech at the start or understand just how true the “we have been speaking English since we were born” line is, or the reference to his previous song, or the lines about the IMF/FMI…As for Paulescu (his actual name, how tf did both of you get it wrong), he literally died in 1931, 16 years before the communists got to power so no, that wasn’t the reason, in fact the communists applauded him in their textbooks. The context was WW1, he was drafted in the army

    Just because you were talking about friends and brothers, I thought I will share something not many foreigners know and might make you think: Brother in hungarian is testvér. The word testvér is actually composed of two words, test=bodey; vér=blood so your Brother is what? Your bodey and your blood.
    Maybe a knowledgeseeker reading this will be inspired to look forward .

    Manele (singular, manea) or manele music is a musical genre, originating from the Roma ethnic communities in Romania. The genre has influences from Armenian, Greek, Turkish, Arabic and Serbian folk music and from Romanian fiddle music; the ability of the genre to incorporate elements from practically all other musical genres accessible to mass culture in Romania (pop, rap or hip-hop music, dance music, jazz techno, rock music or even cult music) is remarkable. Manele music, with a relatively short history (of the order of several decades) has become over time a musical genre appreciated in the space of Romanian speakers. There are a significant number of manele listeners in the country (especially appreciated by young people), with a predilection in rural areas and in the city's poor neighborhoods. However, the phenomenon is also present in Bulgaria (cealga), Serbia (turbo-folk), Albania (alb. Tallava), Greece (gr. Laïká) or in Turkey (arabesk).

    He means that Romania in that time was starting to lose the identity, the traditions. We started to get influenced by the western countries, he just got out of communist time and got in European Union, we had to sacrifice our identity for it. “ I can be what I WANT TO BE LOSING MY IDENTITY “. But to this day we lost some of our identity yes, but we keep our traditions, we woke up before it was too late most of us. But at the end we evolve, we was just scared of change.

    Because you asked about “Manele”, and you already know from other comments that is a lot of controversy around this genre of music, I sugest to react to “Carla's Dreams - Manele (Cover Spike)”… The song is about a part of peoples who listen this genre of music but don’t want to recognize it. For sure you’ll like it because is a cover done by Carla's Dreams (one of the most beloved bands in Romania, Moldova, Rusia who put a lot of accent on their lyrics, sometimes with hidden messages and most interesting part, all the time when they are in the public have their faces painted. This group as same of Subcarpati, Mafia, Parazitii, Vescan…. they have something unique of their own, they think outside the box)

It's like a curse you put on yourself to swear that something is true. Also, the part with "if something new gets discovered, then surely it was done by American researchers", the way he said that in Romanian was meant to be ironic, like Romanians are so into everything American that they consider everything good comes from there, which is more and more false since like the beginnings of 2010
