I lost my cat of 18 years earlier this spring and we had to put him down, it was hard for me but in the end it's better this way than to have him live through his old age and see him not being able to care for himself like cleaning, going to the cat toilet etc. I just reminded myself how I grew up with him and that I had a true loyal friend in him. At first he started out as a house cat since we lived in an apartment without a garden, but once we moved into a house with a garden we had the best times outside. I could play catch with him, he would even be able to retrieve small balls I threw around, so much so that he would even follow me everytime I left the house, once I moved out and wasn't there 24/7 anymore.
