I don't understand why anyone would question Ron Balicki's knowledge of JKD concepts. I mean he is a full instructor under Dan Inosanto. WTF?? I seen this cat fight man he is no Joke
It's so weird how you can tell when people are extremely skilled even when they do slow or more simple movements like this. Talent and strength are utterly palpable.
Aye yaye yaye... so utilizing economy of motion, closest weapon to nearest target, vertical fist, attack by combination, training equipment... simplicity... how on EARTH can you say this is NOT Jeet Kune Do, particularly from next-gen students??? This is as REAL as it GETs. Thank you for posting---excellent material from excellent teachers.
I love this clip because it shows you an applicable way to do trapping from a traditional boxing stance and from the left lead. And I'm really impressed on how you explain "bridging" in a fight. AKA trapping and the low line kick. Great job Sifu Balicki!!
This is a great demo, Ron. A former student of mine said he had ordered some of your DVDs and was very impressed with your ability to explain the drills and the rationale behind each movement. I think it is wonderful that you and Diana have put attention on the Jun Fan focus mitt drills.
High quality instruction by Ron and perfect execution by Diana. Watch her eyes @ 1:16 to 1:21 Well focussed and spots the target on every move. A good martial artist / instructor from any style can learn a lot from watching this. Thanks for all your hard work and for sharing your knowledge Ron!
Thank you Sifu Ron! Amen. Any decent Concepts-Kali fighter knows that Sijo Bruce Lee was always evolving the curriculum. And Guro Dan said that Sijo did not want his art stuck in a 1960's paradigm. Nice vid' BTW!
UFC fighters have learned and studied this stuff. When UFC's had almost no rules a Jeet Kune Do fighter won a match my head butting his opponents into a bloody submission. In the next tournament, for some strange reason, the "no head butting" rule came about. The split entry is just a standard boxing method for blocking a jab. In most boxing gyms it will be the first counter you learn. UFC fighters use a lot of boxing. How many UFC fighters do you personally anyways.
Love the comments about ufc, its funny, jkd would work in the ring no probs, If any of you have even put eyes on the TAO of jet kune do, you'll know that the stance, and everything has been thought of in terms of distance and timing and economy of motion. So yes yes yes it can and should be used by someone in mma. Quite eaily i could see this dominating in mma, Just need the right person.Bruce was is considered the grandfather of mma so think about it for a minute..
@DuykRuyk This is not modified wing chun. More like simpliefied trapping, or obstruction removal so as to hit. Also there were no high kicks in this clip. As general rule we don't mainly kick above the waist.....(unless we can pull it off, kicking high that is). We kick anywhere from the waist down. That's what's being shown here. Yes Bruce kicked high if he could get away with it. He wouldn't limit himself to just kicking low. Though he emphasized kicking low he did train high kicks.
Sifu Ron, I picked up your Defensive Edge series at the Cold Steel Challenge in Ventura! Worth every penny, IMO. Your instructional material is helpful, and reinforces the principles taught at Sifu Adrian Tandez' school in California.
Excellent I prefer this movement rather than just blocking...you are dancing with your opponent so you can instinctively sense there move...I wonder how it would work on the street though! I also love that they aren't rigid in fighting style being more loose can make it easier to be quick...I need to work on my speed although I do have good reflexes! Awesome video guys! 😊😄
Its much more simple than that, its for protecting the pad holders joints. The pad holder gives a little bit of resistance which keeps their joints from being slammed over and over, keeping them from waking up the next day too sore to train again. It also gives the puncher some resistance and helps to build their tendon and joint strength as well.
@JKDcalvin Are you nuts? Look Bruce was always being progressive with his creation. In fact toward the end of his life he was starting to turn away from trapping, because it was becoming an art unto itself. He was always changing to adapt to the present day of his time. All that Guru Dan and Balicki have done is progrssed it further.
@pulsare21 It's Bruce honorary God-Child actually. She's the daughter of living martial arts legend, Dan Inosanto, who was a student of Jeet Kune Do founder Bruce Lee.
For people talking down on Ron this is drill to get you use to the moves. Its just like boxing your useing combos to get the moves down. Once you have the moves down you make your own combos.
remember these are training drills not a street fight tecnigues. you can use these in self defense with little modifications but these are great drilss.
It prepares you to fight a boxer, kickboxer, or street fighters. Most people don't even know what wing chun is and will attack you with a wild hook or boxing punch instead of chain punches.
is a teaching technique of hands games and if she had connected with a blows or combinations, well I leave that up to you guys on this page. science guys
I wonder how intense fights between Ron and Diana get :P Great video. I haven't done martial arts in years, and my brain started to melt towards the end lol
Kent Darden Yeah. Bruce recommended that righties fight southpaw and lefties fight orthodox, on the logic that your lead hand does most of the delicate work while your nondominant hand is for power shots (which parallels human physiology; your nondominant arm is usually stronger and less coordinated than your lead). Also it confuses the shit out of your opponents, which is important. A large part of Pacqiao's success in boxing is due to being a rightie who fights southpaw and also circles to the right (which just 'feels' wrong, it's much harder to pivot when moving in the direction of your lead), so he's inverted expectations on multiple levels. A lot of people have trouble switching to southpaw after a life of orthodox. I'm a rightie who first came in contact with Bruce's ideas when I was 13 and started out training southpaw, so now it's difficult to fight orthodox. They should both be trained equally just for the hell of it but it's important to focus on your core competency (like how Bruce always did the shuffle, side kick, straight punch; his best moves) but also how to let yourself be defined by your weaknesses and turn those into advantages; something that Bruce also speaks on. His fighting style was formed in part because he was extremely nearsighted and also had asymmetrical feet, something not a lot of people know. God bless
This is very good. I still believe in the vertical punch a little more, but the horizontal feels better. So I developed the diagonal relative punch. It's diagonal to a 45 degree position but it's relative to the body rotation. so if you're at a 45 degree angle, you're punch is at a more 90 degree angle.
Hello, I have a question regarding the punches seen in this video. How come the punches are boxing styled i.e. knuckles up and stricking witht eh 1st 2 knuckles as oppose to the characteristic jeet kune do strike of elbow down/centered and stricking with teh bottom 3 knuckles? Your reply would be appreciated =)
Those are great drills Sifu Balicki. I also like how you explain the application to the pak sau and how to apply it in a real fight. the reference toward "Enter the Dragon" was great. :-) So you can do trapping from a left fighting stance.
@DuykRuyk You are misinformed. JKD is not an assimilation of useful and simple techniques. If you are assimilating, (adding on or adding more) then how are u simplifying? Bruce looked at various arts but he didn't necessarily borrow from all the arts he looked at. The ones he borrowed from were then modified to fit in with his philosophy of Simple, Direct, Economical & Non Telegraphic.
@DuykRuyk Actually MMA is similar to JKD not the other way around as the MMA we currently know of today has many principles borrowed from JKD the way JKD has borrowed from Wing Chun. MMA is not JKD, JKD is not WC. Yes Bruce was striving for a practical & simple martial art but not so it (the art) could change with the flow of a fight but so that he could change and flow with the fight. This clip is only a segment of the entire dvd. Ron says to train right and left sides.
Thanks for the lesson. But i have a question... If you want to break someones defence, how do you do that without risking yours? I mean, when your opponents arms are up, their muscles are hard, so you cant just move them away.... And i am nood that trained to do so easily. And good explanation, i am from Germany and unterstood everything clearly, thx =) Ps: Love the smile of your wife when you say '' this is my face ''
As toddlers, we drank out of bottles As juniors, we drank out of cups As young adults, we drank out of the finest glass When you're thirsty It doesn't matter what the container is as long as it's clean and if it has a hole in it, you'd better drink it quick
@Ronbalicki Thanks so much for your reply! Is there any particular reason as to why you moved on? Cause the straightline and centreline principles in the JKD strike seemed pretty logical, especially in comparison to what's utilised in western boxing...or would I have to purchase the DVD to find out why =P
Is Diana in a left lead instead of a right. the reason I'm asking is that the classic jun fan stance is usually in the right stance. If you can do this in left lead...great! I've been the right lead, but since I'm right handed I usually fight in the left lead. Other than that, very cool drill.
@kwok3d Why don't you explain to us what Jeet Kune Do looks like?? I see fighting, flowing, terminology, footwork, interception/simultaneous, choice of range, progressive indirect attack, .... what's NOT about JKD in this film... darn armchair warriors.
@JKDcalvin "Be like water.". As I understand it he wasn't just referring to combat techniques and tactics. Times change and Bruce Lee would have undoubtedly changed with them. Maybe he would have incorporated more BJJ and/or Krav Maga in his personal style. Who knows? Mr. Balicki, please don't bother yourself with the likes of people as this Calvin. It isn't worth your time.
@DuykRuyk do your research Man. Ron Balicki has had countless boxing and MMA fights. Also Lee opened 3 schools in California within the first year of him moving to the states. He also opened a school in Seattle long before he died. Your the perfect example of someone that talks for the sake of talking. Having done no research, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO SAY. Sad...
Hmm a question...how come she's doing boxing styled punches? Correct me if I'm qrong but isn't a jeet kune do strike known for it's elbowdown/centerlined, vertical fist, bottom 3 knuckles chracteristics?
@DuykRuyk Ummm wrong - look at ANY of the footage or photos of Bruce and he impacts with his foot. It never ceases to amaze me how many no-marks come on here and try and tell people what JKD is or isn't. BTW DuykTuyk what is your lineage or exposure JKD wise? I guess "none" - am I correct?
@Ronbalicki I am curious Sifu, were these drills invented by Bruce Lee or did Dan Inosanto invent them? One thing I don`t understand is Bruce Lee demonstrates in numerous photos and film and states the straight lead vertical fist is the core of Jeet Kune Do. Why are you punching with ping chuie and not chung chuie?
@tattoo21 If you know more than Dan Inosanto and Ron Balicki, who married Bruce Lee's god child, who happens to be dan,s daughter then you are welcome to try to teach the concepts.
@kwok3d I'm not really a JKD fan, but my understanding is that JKD can be almost anything. It's not meant to be a fixed style. More something that can be used and improved upon. It's an evolving system of principles. That's my understanding. I could be wrong.
I have your Jun Fan JKD series dvds. I like them and I am still digesting them. I know you are an exellent martial artist. Bruce Lee in all his pictures from the Bruce Lee`s Fighting Method and in his movies and all other pictures obviously stresses the the vertical fist. I see Sifu Jerry Poteet stresses it.
Is Diana in a Left Lead? I'm asking because usually the jun fan stance is in the right stance, but if you can do it in a left lead, great. Because I'm right handed and not a southpaw. Although I can fight in the right stance.
Ron, you jun fan jkd instructor dvd is too expensive for me to afford. I want one so bad. But $247 at budovideo. I was all 4 dvd for 100 buck i would buy.
i like the drills, but the comment people dont fight this way refering to the lead bridge arm is misleading......wingchun fighter start ther in some of their drills because they realize that there might be an obstruction that they might need to remove as they punch. cross hand chi sao is the drill bruce used in the movie. remember wingchunis the root of jkd.
@Ronbalicki Not you Ron! I am more concerned with DuykRuyk's lineage being as he seems to have all the answers! I am MORE than aware of yours! @Ronbalicki Are you lefthanded ? Another question, where is the straight lead punch aka vertical fist, Jun Fan - isnt that what BL himself trained and taught ? I'd agree this is JKD, but JFJKD, i dont get it.
@JKDcalvin look, i do like bruce lee and i practise original jeet kune do as well, but i hate the act that you are arguing and insulting sifu balicki. As we are all practitioners of the art we should respect each other. it is really hard to have a definitive version of JKd since sigung lee died so young, but you must except sifu balicki's as well as your own definition since he did train with sifu inosanto, one of Sigung Lee's most esteemd students and good friend.
@JKDcalvin @JKDcalvin ridiculous arguig about how to do a jkd puch when jkd is supposed to be the way of no way,.... furthermore bruces daughter is in the video and ron is a student of dan inosanto, I'm sure he knows what he's doing
hay guy if i you know darn well in jkd you do not from to not jab with the left . that what you get from inosanto and his schools. tell you what why don't you ask him about oakland jkd the real art

*I want to learn JKD. Sparring looks fun.*

Just now seeing this. This looks like part of a very interesting series. The Enter the Dragon reference was funny.

It's a martial art that Bruce Lee made. He took different combinations of martial arts. In fact he actually did use it in the Green Hornet.

He seems like a good instructor
Wow, I need to get this tape. I wish I could met Mr. Balicki
This is a very great Drill. Especially since its done from the left lead.
great stuff
good stuff i like how it's trained in routine drills, whereas I like unorthodox training both have their perks.
this is JKD at its roots.

This is good stuff. Never seen wing chun trapping mixed with focus mitts before, more WC people should train like that.
The best jkd legacy.
For people talking down on Ron this is drill to get you use to the moves. Its just like boxing your useing combos to get the moves down. Once you have the moves down you make your own combos.

What is the relation between sectors and jkd/gates theory ?
Because of the punching techniques and the kicking mechanics, this is more like kickboxing than JKD. JKD straight lead punches are vertical.
Is Diana in a left lead instead of a right. the reason I'm asking is that the classic jun fan stance is usually in the right stance. If you can do this in left lead...great! I've been the right lead, but since I'm right handed I usually fight in the left lead. Other than that, very cool drill.
Because it's not created for UFC fighting.

Mr. Balicki, please don't bother yourself with the likes of people as this Calvin. It isn't worth your time.
haven't seen a single straight lead, broken rhythm or half beats. Does Dan Inosanto teach that or did only Bruce Lee do that?
your wife does not have to hit anyone
shes a knockout !!!!

I guess "none" - am I correct?
right
@DuykRuyk Do your research. Ron has fought in the ring. Do you know he was also a Cop?

@halfhausaman, Diana Inosanto is not Bruce's daughter...lol
Is that a Wing Chun punch after the pak?
5-5
@kwok3d I'm not really a JKD fan, but my understanding is that JKD can be almost anything. It's not meant to be a fixed style. More something that can be used and improved upon.
It's an evolving system of principles. That's my understanding. I could be wrong.

@kwok3d You realize who is in the video, don't you? You realize who they were taught by and continue to train with, don't you?
@yoshioofdeath your joking right. Considering there was petty much none of that in this video.
no when you throw a punch your face comes forward
@omegaice8 no this is not classic or authentic jkd. Its jkd concepts at most. At least its just some one punching mitts and then kicking
@Ronbalicki Not you Ron! I am more concerned with DuykRuyk's lineage being as he seems to have all the answers! I am MORE than aware of yours! I asked DuykRuyk about his lineage in an earlier comment and he has - as of yet - no answered.

@Ronbalicki
Are you lefthanded ?
Another question, where is the straight lead punch aka vertical fist, Jun Fan - isnt that what BL himself trained and taught ? I'd agree this is JKD, but JFJKD, i dont get it.
Because UFC fighters only train in Muay Thai. Once they get close they will immediately go for the clinch.
Is she a lefty? Her dominent side seems to be right
@JKDcalvin look, i do like bruce lee and i practise original jeet kune do as well, but i hate the act that you are arguing and insulting sifu balicki. As we are all practitioners of the art we should respect each other. it is really hard to have a definitive version of JKd since sigung lee died so young, but you must except sifu balicki's as well as your own definition since he did train with sifu inosanto, one of Sigung Lee's most esteemd students and good friend.
@BigRoma1 Guro Ron is left handed.
@DuykRuyk Again I ask - lineage?
Hmmm, maybe if I train hard and respect others, I can meet a badass woman too, ha ha ha. Great and inspiring stuff.
@JKDcalvin @JKDcalvin ridiculous arguig about how to do a jkd puch when jkd is supposed to be the way of no way,.... furthermore bruces daughter is in the video and ron is a student of dan inosanto,
I'm sure he knows what he's doing
hay guy if i you know darn well in jkd you do not from to not jab with the left . that what you get from inosanto and his schools. tell you what why don't you ask him about oakland jkd the real art
so many things are missing for the original to much overlapping moves not proper technical
Its not JKD because she twists her punches and in jkd you use the vertical fist mainly
go Diana! kick his butt! -_o
