  • This is the first in a series on USMC intel. Our guest AJ Derryberry discusses intelligence in support of humanitarian assistance operations. He was a ground intel officer, an LAR platoon commander, ran a tactical fusion center in Iraq. AJ ran the ground intelligence schoolhouse and was a MEU S2, he also worked at NSA and MCIA. In this episode we have stories from open-pit goat cooking to open-source intelligence operations in Haiti. Enjoy!

    Great interview, I'm considering intel officer and this is one of the few from the horse's mouth interviews with someone from intel on UA-cam. Very insightful.

      It's hard to pin the secret squirrels down and get them to talk about what they actually do. Glad you enjoyed it. Look for more in the intel series in the future.

    We used to have a guy in C 1/8 who was the most annoying person probably in the company; he'd always walk-up to you and say "Heard from a buddy in Headquarters. We got a hump coming-up. Next Tuesday. Thirteen miles!" He was notorious for that--in his mind, this would make him appear not a deadbeat with no friends but someone you should get to know so you'd be informed at all times. One time he walked-up to a squad-leader's meeting "I got a frie--" "WHAT IS IT THIS TIME!!! WHATEVER IT IS NO ONE CARES!!!"

    Thanks for the Intel videos! I'm going in this August as an enlisted intel guy and would love to hear more if you're able, these are very informative.

    How likely (or unlikely) is it for ground intelligence officers to see combat?

      More likely than other intel officers. They can lead infantry, recon, and intel platoons. Mine got purple heart in Afghanistan

    Difference between an Army intel officer and a Marine intel officer?

    • @unclesugarsmagiccircus9379
      @unclesugarsmagiccircus9379  4 роки тому +2

      There are a few. before 1994, both were similar, you were taught intelligence processes, and sent to a type of unit, then learned how to support that unit. In 1994 the Marine Corps reorganized intel officer jobs under the Van Riper plan. Intelligence officers were organized into 4 job fields, ground intel, air intel, signals intel and human intel. Once promoted to 03, you went to the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) intel officer course and became an 0202 who could lead all 4 fields. So, we specialize, then become generalists. Army are still generalists who can specialize. LtCol Derryberry was a Ground intel officer. I was an Air Intel officer. I would like to round this series out with one of each as a guest.
