Med Floats were essentially why I joined--that and to escape Catawba County (which has gotten worse so should be called "Meth County"). I didn't join to work, I joined for the fun--Med Floats were the highest form of entertainment when I was in--I wanted to see the world and essentially did--Spain and Israel were the best countries of the bunch; I won't cover one drunk after another--the running through town back to ship a few minutes before curfew--miss a curfew and you don't go out for awhile if you go out again. Our behavior over there could have used some work; there are things I am not proud of at all--like throwing francs to street urchins--we'd be outside a bar (Toulon, probably) there'd a be a crowd of kids--we'd throw a franc in the middle of them, then watch them tear each other apart over it--we'd be drinking beers like kings. Anything we did you probably also did; I was so green to the scene I met this woman in a bar, went home with her--she let out massive farts all night in her sleep, it was like sleeping with your Dad--took a bath with her--had to haul ass back to ship though, got used to going to her apartment whenever I wanted. I was telling some squid on the USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2) about it--I didn't even know the guy, he was working, which was something Marines never did on ship--wouldn't you know it, he knew her, too--a lot of people did, actually.

One incident of several was our first day of First Phase--they were, of course, out to run us out of there as fast as possible however they could do it and no matter how many weren't up to the task--cleaning-house right away was step one. But I think some recruiters baited people out of a mental hospital with some candy, then, after dropping them off at the bus station, paid Greyhound to get them the rest of the way to P.I.; one dude was banging his head against a wall the first ten minutes of first phase--he looked like Ozzy Osborne if Ozzy had never made it out of the factory. He really had no business making it as far as South Carolina--it was inhumane to have expected anything out of him.

We used to have a guy in C 1/8 who was the most annoying person probably in the company; he'd always walk-up to you and say "Heard from a buddy in Headquarters. We got a hump coming-up. Next Tuesday. Thirteen miles!" He was notorious for that--in his mind, this would make him appear not a deadbeat with no friends but someone you should get to know so you'd be informed at all times. One time he walked-up to a squad-leader's meeting "I got a frie--" "WHAT IS IT THIS TIME!!! WHATEVER IT IS NO ONE CARES!!!"

I was lucky enough to have encountered a bangalore torpedo (that Sgt. Major Acosta might actually remember); there is a range in Israel I don't remember the name of they took us to from Haifa in a bus--but it's Israel. Israel and "safety" don't go together. We were allowed a lot of leeway at this range that we would have never seen in the States because we never did (it had "houses" at the end, too, for house-to-house--you could spray the room because it had rubber mats on the walls--even if your M16 jammed, the mats would wait). The start of it all was a trench, about waist-high, but before we got to the trench, they set off a real bangalore--what those things put out when they go off cannot be described--but it's like it lifts you off the ground about an inch, that's what it's like--it's like you pissed-off Godzilla. I would imagine engineers did the bangalore--I would never give an "03" one in a million years--after that thing blew, we assaulted barbed wire and other moto-shit. Our adrenalin was through the roof--we'd never done anything like that before nor did I do anything else like it afterwards. Our H 2/8 C.O. at the time (whose name I've never remembered) was the best one I ever had; he was walking the berm in the event things went wrong because it would have been on him. They even had M-60's up on a hilltop somewhere going off to keep imaginary heads down ahead of us and someone at the head of the line with a white flag of some sort so some machine gunner wouldn't accidentally get us a new C.O. with too many clicks.

On the way back from Desert Stroke we hit what would be most person's first major storm--because I had had it easy on quality ships before, it was basically my first, too. I have no idea how LST's make it through something like that; the USS La Moure County seemed to have seen better days as it was--I had a lot of time on the water by then, but people started getting really sick after a few days. I remember laying in the rack nights and hearing creaking, cracks and pops--it was man-made metal vs. Mother Nature. I was seriously not looking forward to thousands of gallons of ice-cold water suddenly bursting into troop berthing--the rack was warm, dry and comfortable--I wasn't ready for such an emergency. That's what it sounded like would happen at any moment. I think our racks were right next to forces itching for an excuse to get in.

MARSOC got their MOS. Well done. (just finished watching Det 1 episode, can you tell?) But! The USMC is killing off the best MOS ever! 0351. Now, what's the company commander gonna do when he needs something blowed up real good right now? So, subjects that might be worth covering. Donno if you'll agree, being as how you're officers and all. And we all know them ain't right in the head, sometimes (mostly). 1. The real power in the Corps. The L/Cpl Mafia. 2. US Army's weird rank inflation. Can't run an infantry squad unless an SNCO? And only 9 men in that squad at that. Hell, the Corps has lots of squads run by the E3 Mafia. Good ones too. 3. The only true long-standing tradition the US military has. Planning and fighting the next war as if it were the last war. I wonder how many wipeouts its gonna take before the numpties up in the head shed to figure out that stacking a squad on a door just isn't a good idea when going up against a professional military force that actually understands overlapping and converging fields of fire for defensive positions? 4. CAAT. There are potential enemies out there that are tank-heavy. Can only carry so many missiles. And those tank heavy forces also tend to invest rather heavily in air support. might not be able to just whiz in with some helos and TOW 'em. So, should we be training in close assault anti-armor? We used to back in the day (the early 80s) but it was mostly imagined and make-believe and sitting around talking about it during breaks in the barracks spade games. 5. They took away our tanks. 6. Anyone else get the feelz that, maybe, some of our military shot-callers are getting side pay from our next enemies? This all kind of reminds me of when the CMC numpty passed down orders that everyone wore rank insignia on cover and lapels, garrison and field and officers wore it shiny for both. Seems someone somewhere didn't salute or some such so No! More! Excuses! 7. Is Quantico too close, geographically, to DC? Heck, HQ USMC is in DC. Maybe that's why the head shed seems to be infested with mind worms. Semper Fi. 79 - 85. O351 Loyalist. L/CPL for life!

@@wildbill60 Yeah. Like the plan is to save all that training money by shutting down assaultmen and replacing them at the rifle company level with sections of combat engineers. But, who knows, right? After all this is the same brain worm infested head shed that dumped our armor assets so we could beg the army when needing such, assuming that there's any US Army assets even close enough to be delivered on time on station, and now is trying to tell us that the super smart types that they want to recruit shouldn't have to go through bootcamp because they're just that speshul.

Good explanation regarding Recon....if any true ‘11 can sit through the whole video. Especially if you got Sparrow Hawk, only time we got two hots n a cot for a few days. 13 months, Sparrow Hawk twice and never got past two days -- Recon needed a little help from an under strength, physically n mentally exhausted rifle company. First, I respect any and all who serve regardless of Branch, MOS, Unit. Minor correction, we had Scouts -- part of the battalion -- since mid 60’s. If they were organic before, I don't know but we had Scouts attached fm Bn in Nam. The Scout/Sniper and when they became ‘Official’... I don't know but Scouts...we had them. Sorry, I couldn't sit and watch for the whole video. Got issues....especially Marines calling themselves Operators. Make up your minds. Small unit raids with overwhelming force, little different philosophy than Light Infantry Assault and schooled that we had a 90% chance of being a casualty. Speaking of rumor and reputation when I got to H 2/8 I had two roommates; one was one of those people who somehow succeeded in The Suck while doing precisely nothing--he went UA soon after my arrival, but after about a month in the rack. The other roommate I had, to this day, gives me the heebies any time I see "Altoona, Pennsylvania." Sheetz, for example, is located in Altoona, PA. When I found that out I couldn't help but think how many times I heard about Altoon, PA, from only one person the entire time I was in--which doesn't include before I was in or afterwards. Lance Corporal Altoona--who became Corporal Altoona--never shut-up about his hometown no matter the topic; when the USS Iowa blew-up, according to him, some guys from Altoona were probably involved--nearly everything came back to Altoona, PA--the Washington Monument, Pickett's Charge, The Space Shuttle--all topics would have eventually steered back to "Reminds me of my hometown, actually... Altoona, Pennsylvania." On Indeed I recently informed an employer why I can't take--or even look at anything located in Altoona, PA. City Council members in Altoona, I have learned also have that guy's last name--you've been warned.
