Appreciate you sharing your process Terry. I think targeting specific grades and price ranges on ebay makes a lot of sense and saves time. I personally keep the range wide open in the off chance that something pops up outside of my usual grade or price range that works for me. Of course that means I have to endure a bit of sifting, but I'm OK with it.

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648

I am glad you enjoyed it, Alex. Yeah, I collect such a broad timeframe for baseball, football and hockey, I have to do it that way or it would be very difficult to go through all the listings. Like I said, i may miss out on some items here and there, and that is okay. The specific cards I am targeting, I catch by identifying the player and year. I think your approach makes sense for you because you have a narrower focus than I do.
Thanks for sharing your approach as well.

Terry - Thank you for sharing your insights on the hobby. Very true wisdom here. I think the biggest struggle for me is so many different cards tugging at me to buy. I don’t think I’ve gotten my hobby ‚identity‘ yet. This definitely helps.

My pleasure. Thanks for watching. Give it time, your identity will come. The thing to remember is the cards aren't going anywhere. I have been at this a long time and am proof of that. Just figure out what you really want and chip away at.

Very cool insight on how you spend time collecting. Also fantastic question about showing 3 cards to represent your collection. I have no idea how I would do that. Not sure I could pick 3 without feeling almost guilty for leaving so many out. I know I’d show the t205 Mordecai brown and I’d probably show the ‘80 Henderson rc but picking a 3rd would be incredibly hard. Interesting stuff as always. Take care Terry

Hi David, the question is a tough one to answer. For me, the items I show can change, but what I would want to show anyone interesting in the hobby is a card that shows history, one that has special meaning to me personally and one with a family connection. That is much of what my collecting is about. I just happened to show those three cards. I could see you maybe picking one of your dad's magazines that is special to you.
      Take care

I love how you often talk about things I've been thinking about. And this week, I've been thinking a lot about "hobby time" and scheduling. Now that my hobby and work lines are kind of blurred... I dunno. I'm still trying to figure it all out. Especially how I watch and comment on videos, which I've been trying to do a little here and there during the week, long videos can be watched in the background, occasionally during studio time, and I try to catch up on Sundays. I'll figure it all out eventually, but it's great to hear other people talk about budgeting hobby time. And it's great to see that Rosen cover.

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  7 місяців тому +1

Hi Skaght, yes, it is a challenge trying to figure it all out. Life isn’t the same everyday and we don’t always have control over our time. I can see where it is an added challenge for you now that you have transitioned to working for yourself full time. On one side you have more control over your schedule but there is also a comfort to structure and routine. As you wrote, you’ll figure it out.
One of the things I appreciate about being part of the community is that we realize many of us have the same kinds of issues.
While it may not solve what we are dealing with, it is reassuring to know you’re not alone.

Terry, I think I will partially reply to you with a video. I know we are both not really VR people, but you've inspired me.
I use eBay searches a lot, but the last few weeks, they have a glitch in the system. If you have a 1967 Mickey Mantle in your search, all of a sudden you have 50 new cards in your search and they are all cards from 1967, not just of Mickey Mantle. It's other players in the set. Very frustrating!
I like your discipline in regards to what you're looking for and at what price. Let's say you have a budget of $200. My issue is that I could see myself saying "what''s available for $250?" I just don't have the discipline. HAHAHA. BTW, that Johnny Bower card is SWEET! I loved hearing about Tommy McDonald. I never knew he was the last position player to not wear a face mask. He must have gotten popped a lot in the face.
I miss seeing those USPS notices on my door. How times have changed. A money order? OH MY, that was a long time ago. Way pre PayPal. But the excitement you felt in getting the Mickey Mantle in the mail is priceless. It's still a great feeling even as an adult.
    Thans for sharing, Terry!

Hi Rick, I am interested in seeing your video reply. Yes, we are not VR people, but it is different when you are inspired vs. feeling obligated.
I didn't notice a glitch with eBay saved searches. That would definitely be frustrating. Yeah, my budget does carry over month to month, though, I slow down during the holidays and don't really set aside a budgeted amount for December. I love that Bower card. McDonald was a small guy that packed a big punch. There are a couple of good UA-cam videos that talk about how tough and good he was.
Yeah, getting that Mickey Mantle was a special feeling. I still get that feeling from time to time. The last was probably the 52 Bowman Waterfield. I just love that card.
      Take care, Rick.

Fantastic share here Terry. I think the three items that i would for sure share that i am proud of would be my Rod Dedeaux and Fred Lynn signed baseball my dad gave me. The baseball is signed by the whole 1970 USC Trojans team. 2nd would be my Koufax RC. I think it is one of the most beautiful looking cards of one of the greatest pitchers of all time and also one of my favorite players. 3rd would be my 1956 Mickey Mantle. Loved your 69 Mantle story! Ohh yes that dreaded note. Lol. Great share as always. Enjoyed.

Great thoughts, Terry! Balance is key, absolutely. The hubby was a great coping tool for me as a kid, and these days it's a great escape from "the real world." I really need to take advantage of the eBay saved searches. My searching is usually random. I think focusing it in a bit would be helpful 👍 I really appreciate your comments on taking time to enjoy the cards we already have. Like you, a lot of us have been collecting for years. And while it's always fun to get the next new card, it's great to appreciate what we have. All the years of collecting and curating these collections. It only makes sense to really stop and appreciate what we already have.
That thought of yours, what three items would you show someone who was visiting and wanted to see what your collection was all about? That's a great question! I think I'd pick best stories to tell as opposed to monetary value. I sure love that McDonald card 👍👍 and great story on the Mantle card.
    Love the Otis Taylor card!
By the way, my middle daughter walked into the room during your video and saw the cards on the TV and mentioned how much she loved the Frank Thomas card, during the first half of the video 😊

Wonderful video, Terry. I remember watching Tommy McDonald play. He was a little, skinny guy running around the field catching passes taking some big hits, but he was tough as nails. And the '69 Mantle story was classic. You struck a chord with me at the end. My Dad passed away almost five years ago now. His birthday is June 21. Coincidentally, his Mass card for the funeral quoted Matthew 6:21, as did you at the conclusion of your video. I shared so many memorable moments with my dad and grandfather as I was growing up. Thanks for re-awakening for a moment, some great memories. Keep up the great work and thanks for all you do for your family and the hobby community.

Hi Rob, that is nice you were able to watch Tommy McDonald. Though a HOFer, he is not as well remembered today. I am taking my two sons to the Pro Football HOF next month. I look forward to seeing his bust.
I am glad you picked up on the scripture reference and that it triggered memories of your dad. My dad passed away in 2014 and I think of him every day. He was the greatest person I ever knew. I believe that is the highest praise a parent can hear from their child. He was not perfect by any means, but he was the perfect dad for me. It sounds like you were blessed with a wonderful dad as well.
      Thanks for the thoughtful comment.

I love hearing how people hobby. In many ways it’s just as interesting as the cards themselves. You picked some great items to represent the heart behind how you collect.
Picking three would be tough as I think I would ultimately have to leave out my favorite card but I would go with 1980 Topps Tony Hill, the card that I liked most in the first pack I opened and a reflection of my Cowboys passion of that time. 1956 Topps Elroy Hirsch would have to be there as it sparked my passion for vintage cards and my passion for learning about history. Last would be 1959 Topps Yogi Berra, the first vintage card I bought, deciding to spend my $6 on that card over many others I had to choose from because Yogi was my Mom’s favorite player and it’s a great way to remember her and how she always supported my hobby.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and making us reflect on the important things of the hobby.

Thanks Chris! I enjoy listening to how people approach the hobby too. There are some similarities and differences in how each of us do it. The fun part is that we learn a little bit from each other. I appreciate you showing me the saved search function in eBay. It has helped me be far more efficient in my searches and has landed me some good deals from time to time. Like I said in the video, I just don't put a lot of time into searching for items to buy beyond what I have in my saved search list.
Great choices for three cards you would show off. They capture you as a person and collector perfectly. Like you, I could have chosen several different items that have meaning and are interesting, but I chose those three more so because of what they represent. I love history through cards (McDonald), the joy of getting a card I always wanted (Mantle) and the personal connection to the hobby (the Rosen Auto).
Thanks as always, my friend. Enjoy your weekend and the Super Bowl.

eBay is definitely a good friend while waiting for the kid’s practices to get over with. I respect how you sleep on your decisions. I’m don’t necessarily do that but at shows I walk around first then narrow down the from there. Too many times did I buy something early then regret when I saw something later that I liked more but then couldn’t afford it. My son hates that I do thst though, haha.
Great pickup with the Tommy McDonald. And an even better story with the Mantle. Very nice shoutout to Ed. Like you said he’s one of the nicest individuals on UA-cam.

Yes, sleeping on an item has cost me at times. I remember missing out on two magazines because I didn't pull the trigger right away. A 1961 Newstand SI with Jon Arnett on the cover and a 1965 SI with Lance Alworth. I went to bed and when I woke up I wanted to buy them, but both were sold. I should have known better, but like I said there will always other items to acquire. Like I said, we are our hobby,
Ed is awesome! I am glad you like that McDonald. Such a great card with a story.
My plan is to hang out with my wife and kids. We are going to get some snacks and different foods to sample. It is tough to cheer for either team. I guess I will go with the 49ers because it would be nice to see Purdy win. He seems like a great guy. How about you? What are you doing? Who do you want to win?
      Take care

    Hi Terry,
I really enjoyed this video as it really hits home to me. I actually watched this video while taking a walk. I buy the majority of my cards at my LCS or on E-Bay. To date, I have saved sellers that I look at on a fairly regular basis, as I am now trying to be a bit more focused, and utilizing saved searches like you do makes a lot of sense.
Finding time for the hobby in addition to your career and family is always a challenge. When I make content I record in my home office which is where I work 95% of the time, so it takes a bit to set up for a video. I will usually shoot a couple of videos and then release them over a couple of weeks. Keeping up with viewing and commenting on videos continues to become more challenging as the channels I am subscribed to continue to expand. My wife usually goes to bed earlier than I do and I take that time to catch up on videos, I do read fewer books and watch less TV these days.
Love the items you chose to share if someone came to your house, I am still thinking through what I would share. The 69 Mantle is a great story, no way I could have not opened it right away! That card is at the top of my list, I remember opening cards with my childhood buddy and he pulled that card. It has been on my want list ever since, think I need to take care of that soon!
Have a great weekend and enjoy the Super Bowl!

Hi Steve, I am glad you enjoyed and can relate. Taking the approach of saving the seller. Especially, if you are buying ungraded cards and they have a good reputation. Yeah, the saved searches are nice. I may miss out on some deals that the saved search may have missed, but my time is more important. Overall, saved searches are pretty reliable.
Pretty amazing you were seeing Mickey Mantle cards being pulled from a pack. That is a great looking card of him too. I am glad they decided to release a card of him even though he retired before the season. Good luck with your search. Yeah, it the three items to share just hit me. I think it is a little more meaningful then your three most valuable cards or three favorites. My choice could change depending on the day, but I would choose an item that reflects the history of the game, another that has a story to it and something that connects to my family. That Al Rosen magazine is a good example. I also have the signed 1952 signed Yankees stationary from my wife's relative former Yankee Archie Wilson
You enjoy the Super Bowl too. I guess...go 49ers. I hope it is a good game.

Hello there, Terry! Funny I've been enjoying your content for the better half a year now. Only in the last few months did I start commenting. In all honesty Id only been recently getting reacquainted with the hobby and thought, "what could I possibly add to the conversation?" However with time my admiration outbid my apprehension, and Im glad I've been able to contribute along with the regulars.. You have a great bunch here and well deserved as you have shown the utmost class and respect.
Excellent topic. Thats great that the saved search selection has been so effective.. the thrill of the hunt coming to you is both smart and time efficient. Especially the broader search on the football cards as when one of those pop up, its great to be one of the first to know.. Especially if looking for time to fully consider the card or magazine.
If you ever decide to make a video on the subject of the early days of ebay acquisitions, Id be all ears. Paying by money order that is something else. Really enjoyed the mantle story
I've recently taken a break on my card and comic book collections. My affection for both hobbies is alive and well but the comics simple consume too much space haha! I live in a 2 bedroom apartment. My brother was visiting from Brazil and it took me four days to move boxes so hed have his living space. So, a break was in order.. Oh indeed to answer a question the ages are Golden, Silver and Bronze. I didnt get back to you on that because there is some question of an Atomic age in there. But thats up for debate. I collected primarily Silver and Bronze and Golden when I could. The cards honestly dont require much space at all but I want to take some time to consider where I want to go with my card collecting.
I think its wise to focus on ebay searches. The thought of auction houses is a big portion of where Im certain lots of mid to high end collectors find their treasures, but the auction fees are pretty daunting from what Ive seen.. Ebay is a great resource and their customer service is very reliable. I feel good imagining going with them w card collection going forward and likely my first graded cards too.
Also I think the urge to go to conventions lessens with time and saving that travel and entry fee money can only lead to positive things
The Mcdowell football card is great. The determination to go out there unmasked is something else and that card is a real reminder of a time gone past
Youve given me alot to look forward each week with these uploads and plenty consider with collecting. Have a great weekend. Hopefully we see an early Spring and as always, enthusiastic for the next video.

Hi Avian, I am grateful you went from watching to commenting. While I never want to make you feel like you have to comment, I always look forward to hearing what is on your mind. You’re a thoughtful and eloquent writer. Your contributions to the conversation have been encouraging and often get me thinking as well. I like the idea of talking about collecting on eBay in the early days. It is how I built much of my collection. I will give it some thought about how to go about it.
Saved searches have made it much more efficient for me once I got the hang of it. Admittedly, I struggle with magazines because I am not as knowledgeable about all the covers out there, I am looking for. Sometimes they find me. So, I will occasionally spend time researching covers from Sport and Sports Illustrated and then specifically seek them out on eBay.
Thank you for the response on the different “Ages” of comic books. I did enjoy them when I was growing up just as I did cards. As you note, there is only so much room. I am fortunate to live in a larger home now, but I still want a collection that is not too big with the understanding that is relative to each collector. For me, I can fit my entire collection minus some childhood sets into twelve mid size Rubbermaid totes. That may seem like a lot but it really isn’t considering I have been doing it for about 25 years. My magazines fit in four totes. All of them are easily accessible.
I wish you the best as your figure out how you want to go about card collecting. Being you’re a long time collector of comics you already have a collecting mindset and have some idea of knowing what works for you and doesn’t. Being you have a small place, it seems like those cards that have the most meaning to you is a good way to start. Graded cards are nice because they can be moved much easier if you ever had to sell and unlike comics or magazines, you can see the whole card through the holder. However, ungraded are less expensive and makes more sense if they are not cards that are particularly valuable. It is not daunting to get started, but there are things to consider.
Thanks as always for the positive and thoughtful comment. Have a great week!

Hey Terry! This was a nice look at how you experience the hobby both from a community and card standpoint. I try to watch and communicate with as many people as I possibly can. Especially those that watch my content, collect similarly to me or just have a true passion for what they collect or talk about. I enjoyed hearing a more detailed explanation of your approach to what you’re looking to pick up and why. My way of collecting has been much less focused but I’m starting to narrow that focus a little bit to prioritize some cards over others. Enjoyed seeing those 3 meaningful pieces from your collection again!

For me, limiting my videos to usually one a week helps me support others. There are some that can put out more frequent content and can watch other channels, and that is great.

Nice to hear your thoughts on your save searches. I save a lot of searches, some I check regularly and some I never return to. I should really purge through my list. Good to see a player like Al Rosen still getting some time on videos. He didn't have a long career and could easily be an afterthought to most collectors. I know there's people like yourself that wouldn't overlook him and have that connection. He's a great player to collect! Great stuff Terry!

      Hi Mark,
Those are all nice 70s cards to show. I am sure collector's of our generation would especially appreciate them.
      1) I do not go to card shows at this time of my life. There are not too many around where I live and with my kids sports and school schedules it is tough to make time to do that.
      2) We did not have a SuperBowl party at my office. On Sunday, I watched the game with my wife and kids. We had snacks, soda and we made steak and lobster.
      3) See 2.
      4) The Chiefs 1970 win was impressive and was one of the most important SuperBowl wins in the history of the game. It built upon the Jets 1969 win and led to Pete Rozelle realizing the AFL talent was on par with the NFL.
What did you do for the SuperBowl?

@@SouvenirProgramsHere Hi Tom, 😆 I really don’t want to get to that point. Hopefully, if I choose not to monetize that doesn’t happen. I like my channel where it is. I couldn’t monetize even if I wanted to because I don’t make enough videos. The ones I do make are not long enough to log the minimum hours needed. I have a successful career where I am blessed to earn a good enough living to enable me to spend some money on little cardboard objects that bring me enjoyment.
This is not a job or a way to earn revenue. I want to share my stories, collection and enjoyment of sports with others. I have done little to promote my channel other than an appearance here and there on another channel. To me, that was more an opportunity to hang out with fellow collectors.
The YTSCHOF gave my channel some visibility and I appreciate that because it enables me to share my love of the hobby with more likeminded people. There are too many channels that talk about the things I don’t enjoy about the hobby. I hope channels like ours gives people a different perspective on the hobby.

Hey Terry. I think what I would show is my Sports Illustrated collection of framed issues of Huskers on the front. Most people who visit me are Husker fans as well so I suspect they would enjoy that. While watching your video, I noticed the 1973 Frank Robinson card. This is a card I have always admired because of the photo. As I am staring at it, I see that they have him listed with the Angels, but he appears to be in a Dodgers uniform and playing the Phillies. How have I not noticed this before? I appreciate the few comments you made about how often you release a video and the balance in watching other content. I post a new video once a week if for no other reason, I don't want to bog others down with all the content they may feel obligated to watch. So many loyal content creators that I hate to do that to them. I try to watch as much as I can, but it has been increasingly difficult to do. I would be interested in any advice you might have. Thanks.

Hi Drew, as I am sure you know all too well the 73 Topps is filled with airbrushing and creative takes on team logos and colors. The Graig Nettles is my favorite in the entire set as they show him in an Indians road uniform but lazily turn it into a Yankees road uniform with the interlocking NY insignia that then don’t wear on the road. A card I like to display from time to time to get a good laugh. The Robinson is a nice photo similar to the 74 Vada I showed a couple of videos ago.
As far as video watching, I do watch longer ones when I am walking or working out. I can put them on 1.5 to 1.75 speed if the person doesn’t talk to fast and still be able to follow what they are sharing. If I want to leave a comment and can’t at the moment, I save it to watch later. Then I will try to comment later that day. I prioritize my video watching by those I enjoy most and who also are supportive of me and others. The latter isn’t always the case if they are larger channel and I really enjoy their content. I understand they can’t watch and comment on it all. Then I make room for newer channels if they are showing or talking about vintage cards which is of course my primary focus. Increasing the speed to 1.5 to 1.75 does help a lot. Some people go 2.0 but that is usually to fast.
      Take care
