Aww I'm so sorry about your experience. That cafe needs to be reported to your local labor bureau. You have to be paid minimum wage during training! It is against the law to be paid less than. As a server/bartender here is LA you get paid minimum wage in training due to the fact that tips are not part of income until post training. Get a lawyer and sue that owner. Sounds like they are a hot mess ripe for a lawsuit.

Okay so this is what I thought?!? A few years ago I applied for a server position downtown (this was before my other local cafe I worked at) and they told me during training I’d make $15/hr but then go down to $9 + tips after training. I was SO surprised when I learned it was *just* $9/hr even without tips…

Roxy also here in California there is no sub minimum wage; everyone is required to be paid at least the local minimum wage, which up here in San Jose is 17.55/hr, and any tip is on top of that 🙂

@StefaniaMarzelia as a local Illinois Business owner, what they did was totally illegal.
State law requires the business owner makes up the
      difference for server wages.
Meaning the 9 is legal (which i think is different now). However if you work 20 hours your tips have to make up the difference between the 9 and the minimum (state is 14) if the tips don't then the owner has to make up for it.

I worked as a barista in a combo restaurant and coffee shop. Pay started at $12 got tips after 2 weeks once i proved i knew what i was doing. I worked there from March-October last year and the more I knew what I was doing the more they expected. I became a shift for a bit until another shift was incredibly toxic and I realized I didn't need to deal with that and changed jobs. When I was a shift though I would do so many things at the same time. Drive, fryer, barista, runner, it was too much and they didn't care it was too much. They only made the schedule a week out also and it wasn't posted till the Friday before it we were lucky. Sometimes Saturday and that was frustrating. It got to the point where I had to tell them multiple times I wanted my days off together and they still wouldn't do it. My availability was wide open and they couldn't give me that. All I want for a work schedule is two days off in a row. It takes me a bit to relax and recharge. I can't do that with just one day off. Especially if I work early the next day.

13:20 That’s crazy! When I worked at Starbucks as a minor, I was getting $16 an hour. Now that I’m an adult I’m getting $23 an hour (barista position).

I believe they broke the federal labor law. Even servers who receive server wages must be paid minimum wage in total. If the tips didn't add up w wage to the mandated minimum, the employer is responsible for the difference. My son worked at D&D where the amnager tried to take advantage. I had to tweet the Labor Dept to get a real phone # to complain but he got his pay. Many of the foreigners who wouldnt complain, did not. Nobody works for free, even in training. Double check ur local & federal law & send a letter in writing to employer with a cc to Labor Dept. In NY, if they get busted, they have to pay twice what they owe to u. Good luck!

Illinois needs to update some of their laws, if this is legal. Here in California, there's no sub-minimum wage. Everyone must be paid at least the local minimum wage, which here in San Jose is 17.55, and any tip is on top of that. Also the law in California says you are allowed to sit during the shift unless they have a compelling reason to not allow it.
We also require a 10 minute break every 2 hours, and a 30 minute meal break every four hours. If you work greater than five hours total, there MUST be a lunch break (the 30 minute meal break).
But I don't know the law in Illinois. I think the 10 minute breaks are also required under federal law. 🙂

I fell deep into the coffee rabbit hole about two years ago, happily retired in my 50s and living in a beautiful town in the heart of Mexico. Now I’ll be starting my own coffee business, something totally new to most of Mexico, nitro cold brew. I have a stainless steel trailer and an 8 tap kegerator. Have been experimenting with nitro and will sell the coffee with flavorings on nitrogen gas, such as a mocha nitro cold brew. The viscosity of adding something thick keeps the coffee nitrogenated for a long time, as I’m sure you know a black nitro goes flat fairly fast.

Two major reasons why life is sooooo hard. Bad management and big government. Both create toxic, expensive environments that just lead to unnecessary pain. The fifteen dollar standard is a bad idea. I'd rather start off at a lower rate with good raises and benefits then 15.00 an hour and more expensive benefits. Usually employers cut pay in any way they can if forced to pay their employees more by the government. Also, there's a push to get the government to pay for daycare, No. If employers would just work with the employee needed schedule then you wouldn't have to pay higher taxes to save money on daycare. Usually corporate gets in the way of common sense schedules. Your coffee shop story sums it up where government and employers clash making it harder on the working class. To Stephania I hope you do open your own coffee shop it grows to a Starbucks size but you teach the world how to run a company with common sense. Kinda like Arizona tea. The CEO of that company isn't toxic yet is running a successful company.

this vids making me MAD dude. I hate how awful these business owners can be. Like respect your employees. The employees are the people who fucking MAKE the money.

It’s all for the owners to profit more while exploiting their employees. It’s disgusting and is sadly happening everywhere

I love seeing how transparent you were in this video, that’s what life journeys are all about, discovering yourself, your likes and dislikes, and experiencing new things to determine whether they are for you or not for you. What are your options, what are not your options, I’m so proud of you and happy for you, and I believe in your success, and I can’t wait to see what you do next.🩷🩷🩷🩷
