In rupauls podcast with Michelle when they were interviewing Katya, Katya mentioned that she was born in 84' and Rupaul said he vividly remembers that year and he said how great of a year it was for him, watching these videos I can see how happy and amazing it was for him

What's it like for you to see these videos since you and your studio/home are in some of them?
Quite an honor. I painted Nelson's portrait as the builder of the pyramids. He was quite the landed gentleman. His family owned the power plant and his best friends father owned the town, a small town in South Carolina. His father bought a plane without winds and put it in the back yard to play in.
I grew up in South Carolina and work in New York now, so in a very light way, I see that my arc mimics his a bit.

it looks so young and free and even I got some nostalgia even though I was born 8 YEARS after this was filmed. It took me back to a time when I was 21/22 and started going to my local gay bars, singing karaoke and dancing and socializing, feeling like I belonged. Things sometimes change so rapidly it feels like a blink of an eye. All of the good bars are closed now :(

*I'm just being facetious.* I actually live for Ru's early, evolving punk looks and the freedom of expression they had back before drag standards became insanely exacting. (Due, hypocritically, in large part to RDR.) I love that there is currently a rebel androgynous drag movement that wears flats, goes bald, untucked, rocks body hair, includes all genders, and basically does WTF ever feels like a good statement. I think the rebel soul deep down inside Ru's lil' ol' punk 80's heart loves it, too. Things are coming full circle, I think.
