    To anyone asking about automated masking: Scryfall provides both images and the frame used on the card.
    However, card scans (especially older ones) aren't always centered the same way - and even an offset by a few pixels looks very weird on video.
    I tried, but ultimately couldn't get a fully automated version to work. (That being said I'm not a software developer)

    • @paperpauperplayer
      @paperpauperplayer  4 місяці тому +2

      @jaminkauf6242 Thank you for the insight on that one, Jamin! Perhaps some day someone can develop one that only can pull from anything 8th edition or after, and then thar developer can just manually insert old cards into the program for future use, sense we don't have to worry about new old boarder cards coming out. But with me also, I am also not a software developer 🤷‍♂️ haha. Thanks for checking out the video!

      @@paperpauperplayer I do have some software development skills :) My thinking is if you want to automate it, you just make blank frames, and write code to insert names and mana costs using the right fonts/images. Now they won't all literally look like the actual card, since you're picking a frame and putting every card name/cost into it, but the consistency might be an upside, and not doing the manual work probably would be too haha. It's basically a simplified version of those online magic card generators, not too hard to write.

      At the scale and opacity that it is in the video, no one will be able to tell that it isn't just the actual card lol. So great idea!

    you can make this a hell of a lot easier just by making a small program that automatically downloads and crops all the images on Scryfall based on a deck list. No need for all that manual labor of editing. The next step would be to make the editing process of that automatic so you can just have a widget you put in and update the text of their hand and it updates, but that's a editing software specific thing and I don't know as much about.

    • @paperpauperplayer
      @paperpauperplayer  4 місяці тому +2

      @ybabts I mean. Once you get the gist of it down, it's not hours of labor. I don't know how to code, so if you can make a program that does it, that'd be phenomenal! Carl messaged me and told me he actually uses a masking process so it's just automatically cropped out. He just inserts the card image into the mask and it's done. So my way was definitely a work around but hey, to each their own! Who ever couldn't do it before can now at least do it, even if it's a bit of the long way!

  • @omenofthephoenix

    Obviously you can do it later, sorting out hands and what was played, but cardmarket also 'pauses' gameplay every draw or turn to take photos of the hand and write down stuff to talk about in the 'interview' portions. At least that's what I remember from their bts video (which everyone should go watch).
    It really helps us, the viewer, know what's going on in their heads and hands at the time, and I assume helps editing to know the play by play without going through the footage over and over.

    • @paperpauperplayer
      @paperpauperplayer  4 місяці тому

      Oh absolutely. There's actually a comment from card market on this video saying that they only do the write down for the first hand and just hold the hands out for the camera. In Photoshop you can do this way easyer.
    One: use a pen tool and create a mask which you can use for the layer. Now you can reuse this mask for all the cards.
    Two: Create a folder in your layers and add the opacity to that folder and now you only have to place the layers in that folder and all the layers will have that opacity.
    Three: search up how you can automate things within photoshop, this way you can select a folder with all the cards and then let photoshop do all the work.

    Im.a bit confused on how they know whats in the opening hand and what they draw. Are there extra ameras tonshow whats in hand? Or is their a way to sluice through what's on hand by carefully watching the turn of events.

    • @paperpauperplayer
      @paperpauperplayer  4 місяці тому +1

      @TeaAddict1 their camera that is top down onto the table definitely records more than what we see on screen. I know this because of personal experience. I was able to watch my raw footage to see what cards were being drawn. It just requires who ever is playing to tilt their hand about 45°.
      With that being said; Card Market also does commentary throughout the matches of their videos, so I assume during actual recording they are writing information down so they can keep track of everything in-between moments and shots

      We take photos of our opening hands, which is handy when adding the first 7 cards, then I instruct the players to draw cards in a way that shows them to the overhead camera (which shows the whole table, not just the playmat. I usually have to go to the original file to look at each draw when editing). All in all, this is more time consuming than it is technically complicated. But I find that it adds a lot to the viewing experience :)

      @@paperpauperplayer I think my MVP would be a very basic tool that lets you type in a card name (or multiple names) and get the name badge(s) out in one or more image files, using the scryfall API. OBS and video editing plugin would be a later step. I'll hit you up here if/when I get started.

    • @simongunkel7457
      @simongunkel7457 4 місяці тому +1

      I thought a simple MSE style would do the trick, after all what you are looking for is just an alternate style for a card. Scryfall images don't have the name bar in identical positions across all card images. You could do a script to read out mana costs from scryfall (and check for the few things that might alter the name bar, like devoid) and then generates a MSE file with the relevant styles (split+aftermath cards need some exta work).

    • @komfyrion
      @komfyrion 4 місяці тому +1

      I don't know what MSE is, but I have the same thought as you. It will be good enough to generate plausible-looking name bars based on templates. Pulling images of whole cards could be relevant for other features, though.

    Hello can I ask how to add special effect to a video. I make homemade videos, but my "special effects" always feel awkward. So I wanted to ask how to make it better. (If opacity is the key, i would scratch my hair😂)

    • @paperpauperplayer
      @paperpauperplayer  4 місяці тому

      @The_Abhy depends on what you mean by adding special effects? There's different ways of doing it for different needs and applications.
      • If you want to just have things pop up on the screen, it's as simple as just downloading the image or video and adding it to the top layer. Try adding transitions and sound effects to make it feel less like a sideshow
      • If you are trying to make animations or effects on the screen, such as making a puff of smoke appear to have something appear on the screen, just look up green screen effects on UA-cam! Download different green screen effects and animations, and when you put them into your video, you need to find the color key tool. The color key too is how green screens work. You select the green, and anything that is that color on that source will disappear and become transparent. This is the easiest way to add free effects to your video
      •The final option is actually animating effects by yourself. But this obviously requires knowledge of how to do that, or you can pay someone.
      To really help, I'd need more detail on what you're looking to do
