I was a Goth in the UK in the mid-late 80s. Saw Xmal live a few times. They were definately a Goth band or, if you will, had an overall Goth following / fan base. Same crowd who went to see Siouxsie, The Cure, Alien Sex Fiend, Sisters of Mercy, Sex Gang Children ....
@dimensional X struggling to think actually. There weren't many bands that sounded like them. Maybe early Cocteau twins, garlands era, not much but it sprang to mind. Skeletal Family as well.
By the time I had discovered Xmal Deutschland via the 1987 album Viva. The end war nigh. The Siouxsie comparisons can't stop this iconic German band from being visually and musically enigmatic. Dark brooding and beautiful. Anja, Manuela & Fiona goth-girl power of another level. God I wish I had seen them live.
Cannot believe its 26 years since this great band disbanded, very sad day for lovers of the group and genre. I did get to see Xmal 9 times and i cherish every time.

A primeira vez que ouvi esta música, na minha adolescência, foi mágico. Inspirava-me as mais belas imagens. Assim o gótico oitentista internacional simplesmente loclupetou minha imaginação. Mágico, encantador, sombrio, melancólico, mas muito, muito divertido e emocionalmente profundo.
This song ties a knot in my throat every time I listen to it; a very crazy woman for whom I felt very deeply, and whose fate I never knew, loved it. I listen to it just to remember her, and wonder what must have been of her. I hope she's alive and well. Y.A.R.G. I hope I see you again, or at least find out what happened to you.
this band was one of the best amongst the gothic bands. I want to go to clubs where this song is displayed ! what awesome music I miss the 80´s damn it ! I need this music! this song was an anthem for many fans like me ! Absolutely awesome, the melody is perfect
i saw this lot in Aberdeen in around 1987. My first live gig and they blew me away. Specially this song. Make me want to dust down the crimpers and go all gothic again.

Thanks for sharing. I'd seen the Xmal Deutschland logo/patch on a few goth girls here and there in the '80s (ca. 1984-88) but never bothered to investigate what the draw was for this-and many other-dark denizens of the deep. At least UA-cam allows me to plunge into the depths, even if only 30 years later... cough cough ...get off my lawn! =)
It seems that at a glance, more than any of the underground genres, Goth and it's associated acts really had a hand in laying the foundations for women musicians in underground music. I'm more from the Punk/Hardcore and Metal side of things so I can't confirm this but relative to those genres which for the most part were male dominated for years Goth seems to have showcased the talents of women musicians more throughout the 80's.
20 years i'm searching for the title, just knowing it was x-mal deutschland !!! I'm so happy to know it by now !! What a fucking song !! i miss so much the new wave/ cold wave times .....

One of if not the most underrated band in Germany.
They might be reforming later this year.
In terms of music, it's the most German thing that's ever been German.
@@kalevala29 What, more German than Kraftwerk, Propaganda, (early) Einstürzende Neubauten or Heino?

Why does someone ALWAYS have to post about a band being 'underrated'? Is it something that Mediocre people think? Yawn.

I'd say: "shine!" (as in the imperative / command) rather than "brilliant" and "storm", not "striker". However, your effort is appreciated.

They were even better than the Banshees if you ask me.

Manuela Rickers is one of the most awesome guitarists EVER.
I saw Anja Huwe live at Wembley Arena supporting the Stranglers; this is brilliant I'd forgotten what a good song it was - thanks!
Me encanta la vocalista y el grupo en si 💜 creo que es uno de los mejores grupos que gustan cuando los escuchas por primera vez .
saw X Mal many times in the 1980's after hearing on Peel . Excellent band clearly influenced by Siouxsie .

i also believe they sound better too

Beautiful song and melody. Put me in a trance. Brings back so much memory.
Just reminicin listening to this song reminds me of my baby years when i literally thought the world was made of magic

Love this band! Saw them twice live.
once we had also such a great goth club here in bratislava, but those times lie also a couple years ago... :)

This is the first song I ever heard from XMD many years ago, and I became a fan as soon as I got the Peel Sessions EP.
I've always loved Anja's haunting vocals!
She sounds more like Elizabeth Fraser than like Siouxie Sioux, at least on this track.
Eir Apps, i think Elizabeth sounded more angelic than anja , but lisa garrard from dead can dance i think is spot on for xmal.
Yes !!! I hear the the same Eir Apps!! People seem to have not listened to the early cocteau twins "post-punk" albums....
Disagree
All 3 sound like each other, bonus Toyah
I love you so much I'm goth I live in Morocco I like it very much xmal

Powerful and beautiful. Another level of sound and mood. Where are the new Xmal's?
Of all the bands that came from my hometown Hamburg Xmal are still my favourite. I would love to see them doing a revival gig some day ...
Hamburg is my favorite city in Deutschland...of the 14 I got to know pretty well ❌❌❌
