    Good review Pete. Are those tyres standard?

    • @TheRedlinedotcom
      @TheRedlinedotcom  3 роки тому +1

      Hey mate! Thanks for the kind words. The Rambler tyres are standard, the tyres in the video are (I think) Wranglers. As in the tyres I drove on were Wranglers with a few pounds out of them.

    The new G-Wagon, Wrangler and new Ford Bronco all show how you can build a new 4x4 that is true to the heritage and history of the old one. They also all rely on solid axles, body on frame construction and steel springs, because that's what a serious off-roader wants. The "Defender" is basically just a new Freelander. It looks like a Discovery, has unreliable air springs that will fail in the bush, has a Monocoque body that will be damage prone and prevents an open version, and has independent suspension, reducing articulation off road. You can't put a lift klt on it either, and it's too expensive.
    Yes, you can have some fun doing mild off-roading. But an old Defender with a lift will go places that the electronics and fancy bits in this car can't follow. And do it with a lot more style.

      Hey there Geoff - I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that Land Rover isn't all that interested in that kind of market because - rightly - they are not interested in paying as much for the Defender. The sorts of off-roading fans you're talking about are going to be absolutely flogging their cars the way the shotguns-and-wellies brigade do their old Defenders. So while you are absolutely correct, the buyers you're talking about aren't really New Defender buyers. Thanks so much for getting involved and thanks for watching!

      @@TheRedlinedotcom Thanks for the reply. I agree that the shopping Moms who will mostly buy the new "Defender" are more interested in a comfortable ride than in crossing the Serengeti. But Land Rover insists on pretending that this is a real successor to the original. It's not, in any meaningful way.

    • @TheRedlinedotcom
      @TheRedlinedotcom  3 роки тому

      Oh, well, I don't think anyone *really* believes that. Marketing is a totally different world to reality but nameplates are meaningless these days. Look at how Ford has re-created the Puma. In the 90s it was a fun sports coupe and today it's a compact SUV. Will it work? Probably.

    Why not a proper camera installation so random inserts wouldn't be necessary?

    How is it any better then Discovery or RR Sport?

    • @TheRedlinedotcom
      @TheRedlinedotcom  3 роки тому

      Hey there! Thanks for watching! I think it's more of an off-roader than a RR Sport, but I am absolutely not a hardcore off-roader, as I said a few times in the video. Having never taken either the Disco or RR Sport off-road, I really can't tell you what the differences are. The Defender is less of an apartment block on wheels (but not much, obviously, given it's over 5m long). The Defender is based on the same platform, so they're probably quite similar. I believe (don't quote me, as I say, I'm a novice), the Defender has a higher maximum ride height than the Disco and RR Sport. The RRS is more of a road car with good off-road capability while the Defender is the opposite, I guess. An excellent off-roader with strong road credentials. In fact, I think the Defender is better on-road than the Disco. That's all a bit muddled, but as I said, not an expert off-roader. What do you think?

      @@TheRedlinedotcom you are welcome. You do good content.
      The question is about the defender content. The differences with the Range Rover Sport and the Discovery are all superficial. All three are essentially the same vehicle, built on the same architecture, the Discovery is built in the same factory on the same line, all designed to haul up to 7 people, through the same 900 mm of water, and tow up to the same 8200 lbs. Other then slightly different tires they have the same ground clearance. Really a nip-tuck and some Botox is the only difference. It was a rhetorical question, because the answer really is, "other then some new tech and a new look they are essentially equal" .

    • @TheRedlinedotcom
      @TheRedlinedotcom  3 роки тому

      Thanks mate, appreciate it! The Defender might be part marketing but it needs a proper off-roader to give you the straight talk. I was impressed with the Defender's mix of styling, on-road feel and off-road capability. I'd have it over the Disco because of it's smaller envelope and over the RR Sport because I think it's better looking and even more comfortable.

    • @fabulousoffroaddesigns5080

      @@TheRedlinedotcom that is exactly the point. This is why the Defender faithful are so upset. It is built on basically the same platform as the Discovery and RR Sport and it doesn't do anything, they can't do. Defenders have never been built on Discovery platforms. It may feel better due to tires but numerically they are the same. Basically what they have built is a better looking, more desirable Discovery, but they have ruined the Defender name plate irreparably in the process.

    • @TheRedlinedotcom
      @TheRedlinedotcom  3 роки тому

      Yeah, but I do think - as I often say - LR are in the business of selling cars and they're gonna sell a crap-ton of these to buyers new to the brand. The Disco will be pushed further upmarket, I'd say, which will annoy Disco owners even more. Be interesting to see how it plays out...
      Thanks for getting involved, it's always good to see what other people think!

    I have driven my 2009 MY 110 in all sorts of places on and off road...I love it. But the design and engineering is old. I could give you a long list of things that are wrong with it and that I only put up with for "romantic" not rational reasons: call it the style of "cool".
    I'll be buying the new Defender because it will do what the old one does and more.
    Land Rover brought us the Range Rover and from all accounts, it was regarded with equal cynicism.
