One of the reasons Avatar has such outstanding 3D is that there is almost always some horizontal camera movement going on. The parallaxing effect can add depth to even a 2D transfer, but it just exacerbates the effect in 3D. Other directors, even when they shot in 3D, did not think to have the same horizontal camera movement and it just makes the 3D seem less impressive. Good set design is another thing that greatly helps, having lots of different objects at different depths to help separate everything. The movie itself is OK at best, but yeah that 3D is probably as good as it's gonna get, until Avatar 2 anyway.

Nice review. I just picked up one of these kits from the manufacturer directly. They have them in stock and sell a kit with transmitter, cable, and 2/4/or 6 glasses. Total around $1050.
I have to agree. I saw this film in IMAX 3D not a few days ago and it was outstanding, even by the today's modern 3D standards. I like the IMAX 3D experience better than the Blu-ray 3D one, simply because it had the bigger screen and immersive sound. But man, this still a lot of fun to watch. I will have to say I did actually get HFR at the theater. But it was only present in a few scenes, and it was slightly distracting. Everything was brighter than its Blu-ray 3D counterpart. I don't know if that was the HDR working, though. None the less, this still built for IMAX 3D and well worth seeing.
how does this projector and these 3D projectors compare to something like the LG C6 (or E6/G6) for 3D? I would love to get one of these in a few years if the 3D really is vastly superior.

Most of the IMAX Cinemas I’ve been to aren’t property equipped to handle 3D with HFR and 4KHDR. Unless you can find a Dolby Cinema, watching the new Avatar won’t feel much different than a decade ago. Shane, I’m glad to see Home Theater tech catching up and likely surpassing that of Cinemas.

Shane, first and most of all, thank you for even doing a review / overview like this. You're probably the only one still doing any work to accommodate 3D enthusiasts like us. My thoughts based on this video and my 3D experience with plasma and a C6 OLED: While I would love to see what you're seeing, after transitioning to passive 3D glasses, I came to the conclusion that 3D will never make a comeback with active glasses. They're too cumbersome and too much work. People just want to sit down and watch a movie without troubleshooting every single time you turn the system on. And glasses is almost too much of an ask without making them heavier and introducing flicker. What the real shame is is that flagship TVs no longer have 3D. As much as you talked about brightness, contrast, and color saturation with a projector, I am confident that new and future OLED TVs would blow your system (in this video) out of the water with 3D PQ. It is a real shame that we may never get such technology.
I strongly agree. I just rewatched the first avatar on my old C6 3D OLED, and it was really nice. The 4k screen allows the full res of the dual 1080 bluray format to come through, and the fact that it is an HDR screen as well lets me compensate for the polarization with higher black level and boosted gamma. I can even add a 10% motion smoothing, which I usually detest, but I find at low levels it makes 3D content more comfortable. (for some reason I'm more sensitive to judder in 3D content, and I'm the type who keeps the MS firmly and totally OFF for all 2D content) Then a couple days later I went to see avatar 2 in IMAX 4k with high frame rate, and found it to be a rather lower quality 3D experience than my home setup. The brightness was OK, but the gamma was poorly set, and the HFR I felt was distracting and I found that it pulled me out of the story. I also found the screen was almost too big to be comfortable, even though I was seated in the last row. It's a real shame they only made really good passive home 3D displays for only one or two year, after a nearly a decade of far poorer ones. And most of the standard 3D theater showings even today are far too dim. It's no wonder the format does so poorly when people can so rarely see it at it's true potential... Alas, I feel luck I got my OLED when I did, and I'll be sad when it goes...

Awesome, video and coverage Shane! I definitely agree with you that there was some head scratching DNR applied in the new release of Avatar in theatres. Took a look at my 2D/3D Blu-ray of Avatar, as well as the extended version Blu-ray, and the creature effects offer, more tangible, refined detail. Things looked much more cartoony in the IMAX presentation I saw... from what I’ve read, different theatres were supplied different masters, based on theater spec and projector capabilities. But in some cases, the particular systems are having issues playing the content back. I assume because there could be misrepresentation in the technical specs along the way and you get a master that’s actually performing negatively with the equipment, and not doing the film justice. Quality control is paramount throughout the chain and I don’t think the movie theatres are doing their part from a technical perspective and service. I just think there’s much more room for error if you’re dealing with various masters of the same movie going out to movie houses. The same way that you could have a phenomenal piece of source content but if you don’t have your home cinema equipment properly set up or calibrated or in the hands of a technical team that can showcase the material, properly, you can get very mixed results. That could explain why my experience also had a raised brightness, limiting black level, color volume and overall dynamic range. If you’re seeking out this film in theaters, I would have a conversation with the cinema just to get a sense of what exactly it is you’re going to be watching (for example, which master, HDR, 4K, HFR… and if the projector is laser and so on…)
Fantastic informative review. This is honestly really helpful, I was wondering if XPAND was as good as built in Sony, and sounds like it is, thanks! I'm curious, do you have a list of what movies are must haves in 3D, or just which ones are good?
Hi, I know your a 3D fan as am I, have you grabbed a copy of the latest Dr.Strange film into the multiverse, in 3D? I think they are only available from Japan? Wondered if it’s a worthy review? Thank you for your content!
Stupid question - is 3D content limited to 2k blurays? Is there such a thing as 4k bluray with stereoscopic 3D? I only ever had the PlayStation 3D Display, but it made 3D content look amazing, even on the small 24e 1080p screen. However, given it was about 10 years ago that it was released, I suspect 3D presentation has evolved leaps & bounds since that time.
3D Blu-ray is limited to 1080p. There is no such thing as 3D 4K on Blu-ray. The newer 4K Blu-ray standard did not include a 3D mode. The discs could not provide the bandwidth necessary for 4K 3D. Especially not 4K 3D HFR.
I wonder if locking certain options in the menu is to make sure the 3D looks the best possible way and not have people going around introducing artefacts and even crosstalk by changing the motion flow. That other cable that came in the box is for connecting to the jvc 3D sync port, so maybe when you find yourself testing one next time you can do the same 3D test and report back. Great video as always!
In my experience motion smoothing can often introduce really bad artifacts in 3D blurays. I think it just isn't designed/tuned for it, at least on my TV. Fortunately, I can adjust the strength way down to like 10%, and I do find at that low setting that it helps eliminate the judder I experience with 3D while at the same time keeping the artifacts unnoticeable. I also like the fact that my TV remembers that I keep MS turned completely off for 2D content, and switches automatically.
Or you can contact XPAND Vision directly. I contacted them through email about 2 months before I received my self purchased XW6000 from my local Magnolia Design Center. XPAND was very helpful in getting me these products. The emitter and mini jack sync cable cost me $850 including shipping since I already owned numerous XPAND x105 glasses.
Damn, too bad they removed the smooth motion from 3D vieiwing. I'm owning a VW790es and i can confirm that smooth motion is available in 3D, which is really nice on movies like Aquaman, or Infinity War
Love your videos Shane! But I'm pretty sure your IMAX screening was in 2K, most IMAXes in Connecticut are 2K Xenon. The only IMAX Laser is in Milford (according to Lfexaminer) Hence, I wouldn't be so harsh on the re-release. I watched it in 4K HFR 3D IMAX Laser as well as in normal IMAX in 2K, I strongly recommend you to watch Avatar 2 in Dolby Cinema or IMAX Laser. There was a pretty huge difference between Laser and normal IMAX
Shane, you’re killing me. I was about to ask the wife if I can get a similar set up for 3D content until I searched the projector and saw it cost $28k 😢. That’s some serious baller status. Regardless I enjoyed your review. Sent you a message the other day if you could revisit some of your fav 3D blu rays that you would watch over the 4K version. Ranging from 2016 up to today. Thanks!
The sad part is that Sony priced the exact same projector about $10K cheaper in Europe. The 7000ES in Europe is only a couple thousand more than the US price of the 6000ES. 😔 Thanks Sony! I even thought about flying to Europe and buying it there and flying it back to the US.
Saw the HFR 4K 3D version at my local IMAX With Laser and there were switching scenes of 24fps & 48fps so image quality looked very good I don’t think it’s a massive step up from the 3D Blu-ray but if I had to choose between the 3D Blu-ray and the re-release I would go for the 3D Blu-ray, having said that the AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER clip at the end of the re-release was in HFR 3D and looked very good very crispy, so will definitely be seeing that one in IMAX 3D
Disagree, the white zones are too over exposed in the blu-ray. Also, the movie is better in the 2.39:1 3D aspect ratio. Agree with you with the crosstalk stuff. I have a benqtk850 projector and despite the rainbow effect it sometimes does, there is no crosstalk at all. I noticed some crosstalk on every single cinema, perhaps 9 or 10 shots in the entire movie. Also, the detail stuff you mention is due they over focussed the blu-ray prints. That over focussed stuff does not works at all on a 25 meters long screen. It destroys the continuity between the cg shots and the real shots. This passion about "crisp" is why I call "The over-focus myth". I have seen the fist Avatar several times on cinema. The best version possible is the first 2.39:1 3D version. Everything was at the same level: same exposition, not too over focussed stuff, same colours for real and cgi shots, and everything looked the same. That doesn't happen with any blu-ray transfer, and it's even worse in all the digital/streaming versions.
Make sure you double check the RF not the IR which are conveniently named very similar. Amazon can't even tell the difference and offered the wrong ones cheaper elsewhere. DOH !

A number of 4K projectors and many the older 4K TV's feature compatibility with the orignal Blu-Ray 3D frame packer standard , --> have the ability to up sample 1080 P 3D content to there 4K display , to the best of my knowledge there is no home viewing technology that is able to deliver 4K high frame rate "Yet" (The UHD Blu-ray standard does not "yet" include support for 3D stereoscopic content presentation) Avatar The Way of Water was released in Digital Cinema package's that are dependent upon the projection technology of the cinema where you watched the film At. Many cinemas surprisingly have older projectors that are limited to 2K content in 3D at 24 FPS , Given an advanced projector the studios would then issue a DCP with 4K, 48 FPS Dolby Vision , so the limitation is in presentation technology they have available, playing 4K high frame rate 3D is going to require many cinemas to invest in new projectors that will support this standard. they only thing I can think of at home that would support this standard at home right now are the newer 4K capable VR headsets , like the Playstation 2 VR unit . 3D really does Benefit from high native Frame rate as our visual cortex is much more sensitive to low frame rate issues with 3D content ,, Q and A dailog with Cameron on this subject , note what he has to say about 90 % of all cinimas out there , it was a real issue and he takes this issue very seriously it was found to be a big problem .. ua-cam.com/video/RppIUq-YHGs/v-deo.html
SONY pricing is all mixed up! The price of the 5000 is the same in UK as the USA, before taxes, but the 7000 in the UK is half the USA price! Oh, and the 6000 is off the menu in Europe - not available but I guess you would buy the half price 7000 instead if you had the spare cash.
I saw Avatar 1 and 2 both in HFR. Avatar 1 did it better. No soap opera effect. Avatar 2 had the soap opera effect every other time it was in HFR. Technically their VFR (variable frame rate).
The new Avatar sequel may re-ignite interest in 3D again, but unlikely for at home. Its the fact that you need to put on a pair of glasses that's always been the 3D killer. Autostereoscopic is what the people are demanding. Until that happens, then as a long term fan of 3D, at the home cinema at least, I think it is dead. At least the biggest TV manufacturers seem to believe so, since they stopped including in their mainstream tvs and Sky TV switched off their dedicated 3d channel.
Thanks for the review! Love avatar 3D. Project it often on my nz8 via madvr. Fingers crossed for avatar 2 3d bluray 👍🏻
How does this compare to the AWOL 3500 for 3D?
Awol seemed a little brighter.
Hi, I know your a 3D fan as am I, have you grabbed a copy of the latest Dr.Strange film into the multiverse, in 3D? I think they are only available from Japan?
Wondered if it’s a worthy review?
Thank you for your content!
The rerelease of Avatar IS in 3D 4K HDR. I’ve seen a couple articles about it with interviews with Cameron and Landau.
Yes it's mentioned in the video several times. Also in the title of the video 🤷♂️
@@therealshanelee I thought you said when You saw it a few days ago you didn’t think it Was in 4K “or” HDR ? You sounded pretty sure 🤷♂️
In a different video I thought you said you were Sure the rerelease 3D 4K HDR wasn’t that good & you kind of doubted it Was 4K or HDR?
Will this re release 4k 3d play on uhd players? And I take it !,it will have dolby atmos on it.
They should sell these for existing tv sets, with oled having instant response times, this would work wonders with active 3D sync
Yep.
I think it 4k new render i saw avatar last week
3D Blu-ray is limited to 1080p. There is no such thing as 3D 4K on Blu-ray. The newer 4K Blu-ray standard did not include a 3D mode. The discs could not provide the bandwidth necessary for 4K 3D. Especially not 4K 3D HFR.
Avatar 2 coming in December is going to be amazing!
Will this 3D kit work on the VPL-XW5000 ES?
No
these glasses look exactly like the jvc PK-AG3
Here we go again, James Cameron used that DNR button again 😂
Nice glasses! 😎
What screen gain did you use to review this ?
JVC NX7 vs sony vw715es
who wins do you think?
JVC
Those 3D glasses are unavailable. Is there any other place you can get them?
Call the store and let Robert or Wendy know. They have to order factory direct.
Try a lense with pan focus next unboxing. Gets really annoying with the subject going in and out of focus constantly.
The only IMAX Laser is in Milford (according to Lfexaminer)
Hence, I wouldn't be so harsh on the re-release. I watched it in 4K HFR 3D IMAX Laser as well as in normal IMAX in 2K, I strongly recommend you to watch Avatar 2 in Dolby Cinema or IMAX Laser. There was a pretty huge difference between Laser and normal IMAX
I've seen it in several theaters.
3D in 4K is not possible!
Keep it up with the good content. 🎉
Suggestion: I’ve noticed lately the focus is all wack.
Yeah, please start using a higher aperture. Not everything needs to be f1.4 lol
WOuld love a passive RealD projector system at home. Never liked the active glasses tech.
Great video as always Shane but I'm sticking with my INFITEC 3D system + in Germany the Sony 7000 only costs 15,000 Euro.. .
@Jim can you see any crosstalk with the INFITEC?
Saw the HFR 4K 3D version at my local IMAX With Laser and there were switching scenes of 24fps & 48fps so image quality looked very good I don’t think it’s a massive step up from the 3D Blu-ray but if I had to choose between the 3D Blu-ray and the re-release I would go for the 3D Blu-ray, having said that the AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER clip at the end of the re-release was in HFR 3D and looked very good very crispy, so will definitely be seeing that one in IMAX 3D
3D in 4K is not possible
DOH !
Some people made an HDR version of Avatar as well as other movies. Avatar has 4,000 and 1,000 nit versions available
Those are fake without the source file.
@@therealshanelee They used the blu ray file and converted it into HDR. They were made a while ago so yeah they aren't from the source lol. I just think you should check them out. You don't have to make a video about them. Again, I just think you should check them out as I think they look pretty nice 🤷♂️
The problem with projector is the cost for a screen I wanted an Si screen so asked a store the price was $7000 this ridiculous
Get a Stewart they're around $4k. Well depending on size and style could be the same. Plus they have a better industry history and reputation. This is a $30k+ projector, don't go cheap on the screen. It'll outlast several projectors.
@@therealshanelee my front projector jvc. Rs 1000 but the cost of the screens markup probably more then 90% I don't know anybody here who would pay $4000 at the end of the day it's just a screen I'm disappointed not in my projector but in prices for a screen I also noticed the stores don't list price of screens they don't want you know the prices that right there is a red flag this may be the last front projector I buy
@@justincrossley1913 I've had $100 screens up to thousands. There's a difference to be had. Whether or not you value it is up to you.
Nice projector
Nice enjoy! 🎉
I see there’s still some focus problems 🤔 🤷♂️
Interesting. I’ll be seeing it Tuesday night myself
I’m still holding out for a passive 3D projector. Active 3D is crap IMO.
Only thing I don't like about this is you made me want this setup. The projector is $28,000. How much for the XPAND emitter and glasses? LOL!
15.000€ in Germany!
@@jimcameron1234 For the projector or the XPAND emitter?
I saw Avatar 1 and 2 both in HFR. Avatar 1 did it better. No soap opera effect. Avatar 2 had the soap opera effect every other time it was in HFR. Technically their VFR (variable frame rate).
I prefer to watch with my naked eyes, wearing glasses and watching less resolution is weird
Please bring back 3d era
U did see the wrong technically Version.
I saw a four different versions.
In terms of physical software, I think Australia is the only country to offer Lost World Dominion on 3D Blu ray. But Avatar has to be seen in a 3d imax 👍😁 I was very fond of my Panasinic 65" 3D OLED before I sold it on😁
I didn,t liked its 3d at all in some scenes....they were just looking 2d infact I removed my glasses in those scenes and it was perfectly 2d.
This video is pretty irrelevant to basically everyone considering how much this projector costs. Forget about it.
Nah 3d is dead never again I loved it while it lasted but no support for it at all
this video was shot with a potato

Thank gods 3-D is done. Done. DONE. SO 2009! The marketplace has abandoned and ignored it. New Avatar flicks won't bring it back.
doesn't mean Avatar 2 won't actually do it right, because it will. 3D will be back once it can be done without glasses
So were vinyl records in 1999, but now in 2022 there back. 3d when done right is amazing. Way more immersive than flat 2d material.
A perfect 3D set-up makes a movie way more immersive... (like some recent Imax theatres ) but too bad that only a few are fully equipped for this technology.
@@erikv.8394 agreed 👍
I saw Avatar 3 times in its original release-no small feat because of its mediocrity as a story. Once in Dolby's system, once in RealD-I think and once in 2-D. The 2-D was the best. The 3-D was just a distraction. I won't bother with Avatar 2 in 3-D
I also saw The Hobbit in HFR 3-D out of respect for Peter Jackson. It looked like crap.
I have an Epson 5040ub that already has 3d. Can I still use this setup to get a better 3d image.
