Goalie helmet off should be an automatic stoppage. No penalty because Morrissey pushed Benn. Draw in the Jets’ defensive zone. Goalies without a helmet is so dangerous, never mind the fact the hit to the head he took was pretty scary and he was face down laying there
Agreed, except I would make one change to this: Delay of game penalty to Josh Morrissey. Situations like this happen more frequently than I suspect most people realize - whether a goal is scored as a result or not - and it should be akin to a player knocking off his own net to prevent a scoring chance.
No. Because then we get goalies that purposefuly throw their masks off in an attempt to stop the play. Make it so that if they do it on purpose, minor penalty for delaying the game AND make this a reviewable offense and then I will agree with you.
@@michalsnaiberg2734 It is already penalty for a goalie or any player, but I can promise you no goalie will throw their mask away to get stoppage. The fear in allowing play to continue is that a goalie is going to get seriously hurt. You're so right about the stupidity of calls made wrongly when the whole arena and TV audience knows what really happened, not just the Marchment/Manson play. There have been multiple incidents in the last number of years when this happens for all kinds of things. Including the more violent versions of high sticks, cross checking, slashing, kneeing.....where a player is hurt enough that he can't immediately get up. And the audience is litterally pointing at the center ice screen showing a replay, and the refs are PURPOSELY averting their eyes. Why isn't there a new rule by now that allows refs the discretion of stopping play (which it is anyways) and checking an iPad at the timekeepers box for a few seconds of replay?

Hard to find any team in the NHL like LA that manages to screw it up so many times without being able to see the historical fun in it all. Thanks LA for all the good laughs you give us viewers.
So my thinking for the goalie mask question: if an attacking player is forced into the goalie by a defender, and the helmet is knocked loose - blow the play dead, but award a power play. If ghere was an eminent scoring chance, make it a penalty shot

I feel like there should be some way to resume the game after a stoppage that isn't a face off. In the Hellebuyck situation, i think the ideal solution would be something like, the mask comes off, play stops, they make sure he's okay, and then play resumes with the stars keeping possession. like they give the puck to Robertson at the point and no jets players are allowed within 10 feet of him till the ref starts play. Not saying it should work exactly like that, but something like that.
That's a cool idea, I just think it would be too complicated to implement something like that and there would be a lot of loopholes. It would just cause more controversy over time.
Nah no need for some new overly complicated and intricate way to start the play. Just stop play whenever a mask comes off. Maybe review the play and determine if it was intentional. If it was hand out a harsh penalty. Double minor or even a major to really discourage intentionally losing the mask
Once the puck leaves about a foot from the goalie’s crease, the play is not an immediate scoring opportunity. That is the bases of my argument. They should have a called the play dead once the stars passed the puck away from the crease. Taking a shot against someone who doesn’t have their mask makes me sick to my stomach. Tipping it into the goal right after hellybuck went down would have been a good goal. Surely controversial, but allowing a wrist shot while the goalie’s mask was off shouldn’t happen. If hellybuck got back up that shot surely would have went straight to the face, which no one wants to see EVER.
As a Stars fan who watched the St. Louis Blues score while an obviously injured Ben Bishop lay on the ice beside the net back in 2019, I thought that rule should have changed as a result of that play. Because of the way goalie equipment is made, any vulnerable goalie is in danger when a puck comes flying at them at NHL speeds. Since they didn't change the rule, the Jets will get no sympathy from me. Maybe they'll change the rule now.
You'd complain if that exact same thing happened to your goalie. It's an awful rule. As soon as the goalie's mask unintentionally goes off, the play should be blown dead.
Per the Stars’ goal vs Winnipeg, I could see the refs’ point in not blowing it dead, except for one thing: when the Stars gained possession of the puck, it was a player behind the net who first gained possession. There is no imminent scoring opportunity, because he is behind the net. He has to make a play to create an imminent scoring opportunity, which means that he doesn’t have an imminent scoring opportunity himself, which means that the puck should have been blown dead. The call on the ice is wrong. The referee made a dang-it.
Yet when a play is off-side 12 touches before a goal, it still apparently influenced the scoring opportunity enough to call it back for missed stoppage, so I don't think the league is super concerned about how long something takes to develop.
I was at the Stars Avs game and let me tell you, after that high stick missed call, that ref was in danger. Never seen 20,000 people that mad at one person before. Every time the refs would do anything from that point they’d either get bood or met with “refs you suck” chants. Only positive thing is a little bit after this Josh Manson CREAMED Marchment. Penalty was called on that one though lol
Do clock problems occur more often in LA? I remember several years ago the Kings scoring a buzzer-beating GWG when the clock wasn't started on a faceoff.
Re: Stars/Jets Dang it That is really a judgment call on the referees. The scoring threat was coming, however, had the Jets touched the puck AT ALL to at least TRY to break up the extra pass, then the play would have been blown dead. The Jets don't really have a leg to stand on here. The zebras got the call right here.
If we start going by the "no injury, no penalty" logic, hockey will become like soccer where players end up faking injuries to make sure that the penalty is called.
For the Stars Jets game, the rule should be: 1. Blow the play dead. Don't endanger a goalie. 2. Review the play. If it's found that Benn was shoved into Helly by a Jets player, then give the Jets a delay of game penalty. Otherwise, give Benn a penalty for GI.
If you're the Penguins, you just have to play on until the whistle. Don't get distracted by what should have been a penalty, everyone has seen that happen before and you have to keep your head in the game. Yeah, it probably should have been boarding, thankfully Rust wasn't injured but they didn't call the penalty. You got to keep playing. Just ask the Bruins in game 5 of the finals. Also I think a bonus dang-it for the lady at 9:27 who appears to have a blanket or a pillow.
Rangers blew a three goal lead in the third period, losing in regulation to the Oilers, and the only mention of the game in hat picks or dang-its is one of the Rangers goals 💀💀💀
I mean, I'm not huge on my hockey rules, I used to watch a decade ago and I'm just starting to get back into it, but a player being face down and motionless on the ice should be an immediate stoppage of play regardless of whether or not it's the goalkeeper
17:41 You're close Steve, I'm pretty sure he said "what the fun are you talking about?" some kind of f word though, fun? fudge? funk? flub? Hmm I guess we'll never know
Goalie without a mask is a stoppage every time. Opposing player does it, goaltender interference. Goalie does it himself, delay of game. This scenario, I wouldn’t be opposed to a delay of game penalty against the Winnipeg player, as the stars had an imminent scoring chance. In the case of the SCF goal, as much as I hate adding more subjectivity, add a qualifier on whether the goalie’s mask coming off impeded their ability to make a save might not be the worst thing
Couple years ago, in the playoffs, Blues vs. Stars, Game 6........St. Louis rifled a shot up high that caught Ben Bishop right under the mask. He dropped like a sack of hammers, but the Blues maintained possession and within a few seconds had scored.....all while Bishop was on the ice and out of the play completely. Not unlike Hellebuyck vs. Dallas. Refs allowed the Blues goal to count because, like mentioned above, they had control and there was still an imminent scoring chance. Bishop's injury, according to the rules, was irrelevant. Now of course, one could point out that both Bishop and Hellebuyck would stay in the game, seemingly not as injured as they initially indicated. So maybe the refs, or the NHL rulemakers, were tired of goalies faking injuries to stop the play, and went with the rule that's currently in place now. Makes sense to me.
I was watching the pens and bruins games simultaneously with my roommates (all bruins fans), and with the ways our games ended, I got so much crap.... they literally just stopped playing ;-;
Regarding the Canes/Pens thing: I feel in that situation if you're going to call too many men, you'd have to call holding or interference because Jarvis was trying to get to the bench and was being obstructed at best and held at worst by the Pens looking for retaliation.
I feel like regardless of how the goalie’s helmet comes off that if the puck isn’t basically in the crease or about to cross the goal line the play should be blown dead cuz at the end of the day the players safety should be top priority.
didn't know an injury was required to call high sticking? in fact i thought the penalty was called to reduce injuries in the game. silly me i guess. as for what the guy behind the bench said, first time i heard that review "explanation" i said the exact same thing, word for word.
Theoretically only blood is needed as a high stick that draws blood is a major penalty, which would be reviewable. The reason this wasn't was that the hypothetical call would have been a minor penalty and as such can't be reviewed. Tl:dr: Injury not required, review rules concerning major/minor was the issue
The second the Jets goaltender lost his helmet it should've been blown dead. The second he was down on the ice they should've blown the play dead. There was no reason to continue the play. Doesn't matter why it happened. It should've stopped the play.
You know, that goal where all the EDM players and a few NYR guys were in there all madly swinging blindly at a loose puck right in front of the goal. Some in hopes of hitting the puck away from the goal, others swinging to put the puck in the goal, you know what that reminded me of? ..... Yeah you know Steve, or maybe did you forget with the good looking (it's growing on me) reverse retro jersey we were both seeing on Monday night?
Anyone mind helping my understand what the "reverse retro" thing means? I know retro means old or classic, so I'd expect a "retro jersey" to be an old design from years or decades ago, but I have no sensible guesses for "reverse retro". Opposite of retro? Futuristic? Or retro with reverted colors? What is it?
Considering skaters cannot play the puck have to exit the ice immediately (or get a new helmet) after losing their helmet, I feel the play should be called dead if a goalie loses their mask as they can't really just exit the ice. That being said: I wouldn't call this goaltender interference if it was just pure contact and the mask didn't come off considering Benn was pushed into Hellebuyck.
For the Dallas jets game: that was bad there was about 4 seconds passing before the goal that is not an immediate scoring chance. I think the rule should change where if the goalies helmet is off blow the play dead no ifs it’s or buts. Scoring chance? Too bad. If the goalie intentionally takes his helmet off it’s a penalty
I never want to see a situation where a goalie's helmet comes off and they continue to play, so I would be perfectly content to have it be an automatic stoppage, even if that feels like the more unfair option in some situations.
i may be wrong but i feel that no matter the situation on how it happened, once a goalies helmet comes off due to game play it should be whistled immediately. many different scenarios could have happened that were different then the out come that lied ahead that could have injured the goalie. puck to the head, stick to the face, knee to the head etc.
Speaking of reviews, I think there should be something implemented in a close off sides call that if two shot attempts or twenty seconds has elapsed without a goal the off sides call is no longer valid. Looking at instances like the zegras goal earlier this year.
The goalie mask was incidentally knocked off. 5 yard penalty, automatic first down. After further review the player was pushed into the goalie, causing the player no choice but to hit him. Yellow Card. Goalie had no mask, play called dead. If goalie had his mask he has the chance to block that shot. 15 Love.
I feel according to the 1st stars dang it. (Kinda biased because I'm a stars fan, but I'm gonna be as fair as possible) without going to the rule book. I believe that if a defensive player pushes an offensive player into the defensive goalie causing equipment to fall off, it should be considered "Defensive goalie interference" and the offence is awarded a penalty shot, because the equipment coming off poses a safety hazard to the goalie and the play is blown dead, however it was root caused by a player of the same team. Let me know if that makes sense, just a thought.
@sportsnet Steve, I'm a Jets fan, I'll tell you what I think should have happened. The play should have been whistled down based NOT on goalie interferance, but on the fact that Hellebuyck's helmet was off, and the play continued for several seconds. Pretty sure that a Jets player knocking a guy into their own goalie does NOT count as goalie interference, Nor should it. But if a goalie's helmet comes off through no fault of their own, the play should be whistled down. there should NOT be multiple passes, followed by a shot on net. if the shot is already made, and his helmet comes off, sure let the goal stand. But it's evident from this play that the refs care not 1 wit about Connor Hellebuyck's safety. the guy has just sustained what COULD be a severe head or neck injury and they think to themselves, 'meh, sure why not. let's let the Stars fire a slap shot right at his unprotected noggin.' they need to change the rule, or clarify the rule in order to avoid this kind of thing resulting in a severe head injury on some poor goalie someday
I think the NHL should have a sky judge. someone in the press box that if there’s an egregious missed penalty they can call it. They did that in the XFL and it was actually a pretty quick process that lead to better calls
On the Jets/Stars Controversy, the play should have been blown dead immediately, do you know why? Let me take you back to October 17/2015 in a game between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina was on a powerplay, there was a pass into the crease area and at that point, the Washington defenseman crosschecked the Carolina player in the back thus hitting Holtby from behind and his mask came off. The play was blown dead after about 4 seconds and two passes and Justin Faulk actually got a shot off that Holtby had to cover up to protect himself however it was no goal. My question: Why is Jets/Stars play any different than the Hurricanes/Capitals play because I don't see any differences?
I’m a Stars fan and the last one should have went against the Stars. With the mask one, I’ll say this. The rule is what it is. It happened against us in the series against the Blues years ago. Now saying that, both goals(goal against us Vs the Blues, our goal vs The Oilers) should have been disallowed.
Well of the new rules requires players to skate to the bench if they lose their helmets, they should immediately blow the play dead if a goalie loses theirs via incidental contact
It’s a player safety issue in concept.. Once the goaltender loses his helmet he becomes a “vulnerable player” per say and the play should be stopped for threat of injury; like how play can be stopped for a serious bodycheck that looks injurious, a point shot to face or a skate cut player result in the official making a decision to stop play in the favor of player safety. Whether or not which team caused the interaction that lead to his helmet coming off once it’s removed that player is unable to even potentially defend himself (worse case scenario he takes a puck to the head area) the play should be called to a stoppage;
The conversation around hellebuyck getting his mask knocked off should not be centred around whether or not it’s goalie interference. HIS MASK WAS OFF FOR 4-5 SECONDS. I’ve seen goalies take a puck off the mask, shake it off because a strap came loose, and the play is immediately blown dead. This one should have been as well.
Goalie helmet off should be an automatic stoppage. No penalty because Morrissey pushed Benn. Draw in the Jets’ defensive zone. Goalies without a helmet is so dangerous, never mind the fact the hit to the head he took was pretty scary and he was face down laying there
Agreed. That's a situation where player safety should trump gameplay.
Agreed, except I would make one change to this: Delay of game penalty to Josh Morrissey. love these videos, also love that 1/5th of the video was the kraken/kings game haha
Re: Stars/Jets Dang it
That is really a judgment call on the referees. The scoring threat was coming, however, had the Jets touched the puck AT ALL to at least TRY to break up the extra pass, then the play would have been blown dead. The Jets don't really have a leg to stand on here. The zebras got the call right here.
Imminent scoring chance ... right ... because the goalie was laid out on the ice without a mask!
Yeah, same thing happened to Kuemper. No call. If you're required to wear certain things for safety, if that safety is compromised, play should stop.
If we start going by the "no injury, no penalty" logic, hockey will become like soccer where players end up faking injuries to make sure that the penalty is called.
For the Stars Jets game, the rule should be:
17:41 You're close Steve, I'm pretty sure he said "what the fun are you talking about?" some kind of f word though, fun? fudge? funk? flub? Hmm I guess we'll never know
Those sharks uniforms look like they were designed by Jackie Moon owner of the flint Michigan tropics
I love Vegas’s glow in the dark jerseys.
"... It's a great pass" 😂
Looking forward to the Tend the Goal Dang it of Markstrom next week.
For real
if the goal with ben bishop in 2019 playoffs vs blues counts then the goal vs jets should 100% count
Wow Steve no Benny Hill music or slide whistle sound effect to the multiple times Matt Murray knocked the goal post off the moorings this last week?
You know what's another Dang It? Those Sharks jerseys in the first non Kings/Kraken Dang It
Hellebuyck was down and out for several seconds with no whistle and I think for his safety they should have blown the whistle before the puck went in
I was watching the pens and bruins games simultaneously with my roommates (all bruins fans), and with the ways our games ended, I got so much crap....
they literally just stopped playing ;-;
Where did you find that alternate leafs jersey Steve?
Regarding the Canes/Pens thing: I feel in that situation if you're going to call too many men, you'd have to call holding or interference because Jarvis was trying to get to the bench and was being obstructed at best and held at worst by the Pens looking for retaliation.
I feel like regardless of how the goalie’s helmet comes off that if the puck isn’t basically in the crease or about to cross the goal line the play should be blown dead cuz at the end of the day the players safety should be top priority.
I saw Marchment in the thumbnail and honestly assumed it was going to be the "instigator" bs as a result of his sticking up for Johnston. 🙃
didn't know an injury was required to call high sticking? in fact i thought the penalty was called to reduce injuries in the game. silly me i guess.
as for what the guy behind the bench said, first time i heard that review "explanation" i said the exact same thing, word for word.
As a kings fan it’s the hardest thing to watch games right now
I never want to see a situation where a goalie's helmet comes off and they continue to play, so I would be perfectly content to have it be an automatic stoppage, even if that feels like the more unfair option in some situations.
For the Jets game I think they should have blown the whistle after the pass. If scoring was imminent, then they didn't need to pass.
i may be wrong but i feel that no matter the situation on how it happened, once a goalies helmet comes off due to game play it should be whistled immediately. many different scenarios could have happened that were different then the out come that lied ahead that could have injured the goalie. puck to the head, stick to the face, knee to the head etc.
I hope I'm not the only one that sees the irony in Manson and Marchment's dad's were teammates with the Blackhawks
But it's evident from this play that the refs care not 1 wit about Connor Hellebuyck's safety. the guy has just sustained what COULD be a severe head or neck injury and they think to themselves, 'meh, sure why not. let's let the Stars fire a slap shot right at his unprotected noggin.'
they need to change the rule, or clarify the rule in order to avoid this kind of thing resulting in a severe head injury on some poor goalie someday
I think the NHL should have a sky judge. someone in the press box that if there’s an egregious missed penalty they can call it. They did that in the XFL and it was actually a pretty quick process that lead to better calls
We genuinly have a ref problem in the NHL
Less commentary more hockey 🏑
Hellebuck: it should have been a stop for player safety.
As a Dallas fan I’m staring to think the refs like us 😂
Must be love-hate, or they changed their minds about Dallas after 20 or so games.
Weird how these controversial non calls always involve the Stars.
It’s a player safety issue in concept.. Once the goaltender loses his helmet he becomes a “vulnerable player” per say and the play should be stopped for threat of injury; like how play can be stopped for a serious bodycheck that looks injurious, a point shot to face or a skate cut player result in the official making a decision to stop play in the favor of player safety.
Whether or not which team caused the interaction that lead to his helmet coming off once it’s removed that player is unable to even potentially defend himself (worse case scenario he takes a puck to the head area) the play should be called to a stoppage;
