You are absolutely right, those painted plants are an abomination. Whenever I see something like that I just think WHY. WHY would anyone do this to a plant??! Editing to say you absolutely took me out with that fern "I pointed my camera at it and it just wilted"
I REALLY appreciate these types of videos you do for beginners. No one else does these like you do. If only I would have discovered you channel sooner since I bought o few of these and some of your warnings have manifested. Also appreciate you discussing prices as well. LOVE your channel; thank you!!! 🌈😊
You came up in my algorithm today and I couldn't be happier. The noise you have on all the worst plants has me cracking up! You immediately have me subscribed, I look forward to seeing more of your videos!
🤣😂💕🌱 Thank you and I was having a lot of fun with laughter as you inserted the sound of warning as you zoomed into each one of the plants🌱🛑🤣😂 I can testify to all the ones you showed because I purchased most of them as a newbie and I sure did learn my lesson! So everyone watching this listen to him because he’s right on point! Thank you again Patrick for sharing your knowledge and experiences. I’m so happy to be part of your plant community!🌱💕
I second everyone sounding off in the comments about how helpful this type of video is for beginners. As a beginner myself, I have very little knowledge about what pretty things are traps just by looking at them. Well, except those painted succulents (why would anyone buy that???). I also appreciate that you consistently point out traps in many of your videos, so I feel like I'm retaining that information and it's useful to me. Thanks for keeping us newbies well informed before we launch ourselves into total disappointment!
That was really good you showed people which ones to avoid because if they are a beginner they wouldnt have a clue I’m 71 and still can’t grow the kind of maidenhair like you showed the only one I have luck with is the rosy got it at Lowe’s it had a wick so I put it on my grow cart put a saucer beside it with water and put the wick in it it loves it and is putting out four new leaves YEY thanks for sharing
yes Patrick, you are particularly right about the crotons because i live in the Caribbean and NOBODY ever thinks about that plant as anything remotely close to being an indoor plant, it craves completely full sun all year.
Just wanted you to know that you and your videos have been super helpful in getting me through a challenging break up recently. You are such a ray of sunshine and I cannot wait to start my plant mom journey with your advice :)
Thank you for your kind words! I’m so sorry you’re going through a rough time! Consider yourself warned that plant mom life is pretty relaxing and fun 🥰🙌🏽🌿
Stop the vibe on this video had me cracking up!!!! I TOTALLY agree with peperomia. My watermelon one BROKE MY HEART. Those painted succulents are so depressing!
Patrick, you and Nick Peleggi are my favorite plant UA-camrs. You're like the Bob Ross of the plant world. Also, I must have gotten lucky, I have a big box store palm that has been doing great for about three years. 🌴 Keep up the good work! 💚
I can confirm: hypoestes (polka dot plant) do REALLY well outside! They're one of my favorite deck plants cause they add so much color. I put them in big planters and they become big bushes by the end of the summer
I love the idea pf a big shyly talking beautiful guy just sneaking around all the plant shops with a camera going nuts over plants 😍 these videos are so cute
agree with all your worst plants for beginners. it's important for beginners to start off having successful experiences with their green friends. keep up the good work, patrick!
I kept a maidenhair alive for a couple of years. It hated me, I hated it, I think we just kept going out of spite. Eventually, although it had not died any further I threw it out because it was time for us to stop torturing each other. I was sad because Mum had a huge, thriving one when I was a kid. And then I remembered that we lived in southern Australia then, and I live in New England now, and the conditions are NOT the same.
The sound effects had me cackling. Can you please come with me when I go plant shopping and play that noise everytime I think about getting a calathea?
I must say... aside from the TERRIBLE painted plants (what the heck?) you've been so spot on... I've had at least 90% of the plants you mentioned and my dry-ass place killed them all because I couldn't raise the humidity enough... ESPECIALLY during the winter time. I thought I was trash with plants... until I found more suited ones for my place. Great video!
Ugh YES. Maidenhair was my first ever plant casualty. And Rex begonia are so high maintenance I gave my beauty away. Nobody got time for that anymore! Love your vid!
Patrick, I agree with all your worst plant selection. I cannot make those plants like me, or maybe I’m not giving them the life they need. I gave up on them, I’m sticking to philodendrons and phalenopsis orchids, they tolerate me a little. Enjoyed your video very much. Thanks, Amy
I've had a small pot of ivy for over 2 years that I got from a grocery store. Never had a problem with it. It has gone through neglect and it's still looking good. And for some perspective, I have killed many plants. 🙈
I agree with ALL of your calls. Omg - especially that cursed angel hair fern and many other ferns are fickle. Then - OH NO - painted plants are hurting my brain. Nooooooooooo!!!!!! Keep up the great videos. 💗🤗💗
I really love the maiden hair fern. I get so angry when I think of all the money I’ve sunk into those plants over the years, saying “this time it’ll be different”. -and it’s not. But if I just think of them as cut flowers, that makes total sense ! Thanks!
Very long comment about Croton care from someone who has been growing them for a while now with success. If you're interested in them, or maybe are curious why you struggle with them, please read this! I grow crotons (Codiaeums) indoors during the cold months here in Upstate NY. I absolutely love Codiaeum but if anyone is keeping them indoors, I highly recommend using a good grow light year round. The $18ish Cholas light strips are good for smaller Codiaeum, just don't have them too far from the plant. For lights like this, try to keep them less than a foot away from the newest foliage. My largest is a Codiaeum 'Corkscrew' that I bought two years ago when I was still very much a beginner. During the cold months it sits in my room, about 3 feet below a SpiderFarmer SF2000 at 80% power. It does REALLY well. Earlier in the year, I rescued a small Codiaeum 'Petra' that sits about 4 inches below the same light, just off to the side of it. It dries out extremely fast but it is also thriving, so never be scared that it's "too much" light. Just acclimate it first! Watering is a huge need for these to live their best lives as well, so try not to let them go bone dry for too long. A good water, (I prefer bottom watering), when the soil is completely dry or the pot is very light is ideal. If you're new to Codiaeum and are scared of overwatering, you can wait until the leaves start to droop a little until you get more comfortable with it's water needs. It's important to note that waiting for the plant to droop significantly can slow or kill off new growth. Just be sure to fully saturate the root ball, and with larger Codiaeum, you may want to saturate all of the soil. Like Ficus, they love to root wherever they can and often push roots towards the surface of the soil. While not necessary, I do recommend fertilising with something you're comfortable with to improve the overall health of the plant. I personally use LiquiDirt and it works very well. Personally, 2.5mL of concentrate per gallon of water has been my sweet spot. You could probably make it stronger, it's just what I prefer. They love higher temps and do well in most humidity, but pretty much chill in anything. I've grown mine in anywhere from 39F/3.8C up to 100F/37.7C and 21% to 97% humidity. They have yet to drop leaves from cold temps in my care, even from it dropping 40 degrees in a span of a few hours. If you're really stressed about spider mites, you can of course keep your humidity up a bit. However, as long as your plant isn't quite dehydrated it should do just fine. If your Codiaeum does get spider mites, Captain Jack's Deadbug Brew is my go to for spider mites and thrips as it works very well. Codiaeum are very tough plants from my experience, and they only drop their leaves in very cold temps, when they're dry for far too long or when they're severely lacking in light. I know that sounds super high maintenance but they're one of my easiest genera. Their leaves can droop for quite a while before falling off or dying, so you don't HAVE to water them right away like you would with a peace lily, just recommended that you water when you notice it for better and faster growth. Like I said, I've had mine in temps as low as 39F/3.8C and they still do well, just growth is slowed a bit. My first year with Codiaeum, they did really well until I brought them inside. One of them dropped all but 3 leaves due to lack of light, though after significantly bumping it's light, it's been doing incredibly well. They are so resilient, bounce back incredibly fast and I highly highly recommend them to anyone who wants to try them out, or try them again. Bottom line, if you set your plant up for failure, it'll likely fail. Give it the right conditions and it'll absolutely thrive. Fun facts: Codiaeum are related to Euphorbia! Also, Codiaeum aren't actually Crotons, just like Epipremnum aren't actually Pothos. Pothos and Croton are separate genera, though often used as common name. Important Note: Codiaeum often are grown in plugs, so if you buy one, please check the roots after letting it acclimate. Despite doing everything I could, I lost a massive Codiaeum 'Petra'. Couldn't figure out why, since I've done really with them, until I went to trash it after the stalks had completely dried out. Very dense, hard, sponge-like plugs choked it out. I know a lot of people say plugs are all good and dandy, but I've had nothing but issues with them.
The painted succulents 😭 I saw so many at my Home Depot. The label said it’s special paint that allows them to absorb sunlight but NO ONE was buying them. They look terrible! I’m sure the poor little guys would sell better without the paint so why just why
"Do you even photosynthesize?" This was such a hilarious video. And sadly so true. I now have a long-distance relationship with calatheas. I just go to nurseries and admire them in their full beauty there 😄.
I'm a total beginner. Just got into plants. Brought back 2 from the store yesterday - a ficus elastica and a monstera deliciosa. Saw so many pretty plants while I was there tho. And, wanted to take them all home. I almost bought some of the ones you warn us about. So glad I didn't. Some were also on 'my list'. Was almost pulled into multiple traps I had no idea about. Thanks to you, now I know what to avoid; _and_ what to maybe bring home along my plant journey. You're saving people a lot of time, money, heartache, stress. Thanks for educating, being honest and entertaining at the same time. I thoroughly enjoy coming plant shopping with you.
I had one polka dot plant once that lasted for 10 years, and it grew into this big bush and it flowered and everything. I didn't even know they did that, it was insane. And beautiful! However, after it was gone I have NEVER had luck with a polka dot plant after, I can't figure them out at all!
Your warning are spot on. They're fine until they're not.Lol funny. Agree stop painting plants. I do have plastic plants in my fish tank. 40g.I feel terrible about it. I can't have a lot of fish and have plants. Besides my Australian rainbows eat plants. See you in your next video. Ty
Pepperomias and their tom foolery, mine recently did that and I was crushed lol thought I was making them happy this whole time. I've been making sure the top soil is moist, spritzing from top and their roots are coming back!!!
I'm new here and love your videos! I have had good luck, and a little bad luck, buying houseplants at Trader Joes. Their plants often come in larger grower pots, and cost from a few dollars up to about $20. They had maidenhair ferns for $9, and surprisingly, mine lasted several months. Also philodendron Xanadu, healthy and vigorous. And one beginning with "Ct..." That is stunning!
I agree. All in good fun. But the comments suggest that I’m not the only one. I love fittonia. I didn’t include them in this list because I appreciate their ability to “cry for help” lol 💚
I had several crotons. Crotons are definitely for the streets. Lolll I had crotons outside for months and they lived. Brought them from outside to inside and they died in one month.
Ahahah we brought home at least four of these (I've still got two maidenhair ferns BTW - not looking their best but we found a compromise). We also just put our ivy outside (dunno why we left it so long inside, sorry about that lil' ivy), my husband has now been told to put the croton (sp?) outside as well - it was doing well, but not thriving. Now the 2nd plant you showed (pink leaves, I'm bad with plant names) is doing beautifully in a terrarium (not the maidenhair BTW - the terrarium was too big and against all odds it became covered with mold - it's doing OK now, it's been revived and settled with my other maidenhair)... So thank you on behalf of beginners everywhere.
Hahhaa🤣🤣🤣LOL to myself🙋♀️. I had and still have those exact plants you point out. But never bought the painted haworthia😶 I have unpainted ones🥰. Maidenhair I tried 3x but I cant go on vacation🥴 no one will water it even its in a self-watering pot🤦♀️. I havent seen the ficus, so havent tried😁. But got big FLF and its outdoors. Most of the plants you've shown I grew them in my backyard in the shade and keep them watered during summer. They need a lot of indirect light and warm temperatures. I live in Zone 10😅
I have like half these plants for a year and I thought they’ve been going good, now this video has me second guessing. This was very informative nonetheless.
I fell for one of those calatheas and not only did it die, but it brought spider mites home that infected a bunch of my collection and killed my nerve plant calathea and almost the rattlesnake calathea.
Your videos are delightful! I wish I had known about Begonia rex before, but now I'm addicted. They are so picky about their sun and water requirements.
I loved this video! So scary! Could you do a "not that, this" video? Where you take a look at the worst plants and a better dupe? That night be fun? Love all your videos. Wish I could be your side kick!
I was appalled by the painted plants. It reminded me of being at a box store and seeing two Ponytail palms that were on a lower shelf, Both plants were in shallow pots with decorative pebbles for top dressing. Right away I wasn't happy and the lady that worked there told us that the Ponytail doesn't get a very large root ball that's why they were in so shallow of pots. The pots couldn't have been more than 2 inches deep. The worst part came when we asked her if the pebbles could be removed. She told us that the pebbles were glued into place. Sure enough, I ran my hand over it and there was no way in hell was I going to get those pebbles off. It was a death sentence for the Ponytail. I had owned a Ponytail and their rootball grows very big over time. They can get to be between 5 to 6 feet tall in your house. These Palms were a trap because whoever buys them is going to end up with a dead plant in a month or less. A waste of someone's hard earned money and a waste of a beautiful plant.
I've enjoyed this video there were plants in this video I have purchased and you were a hundred percent right I wish I had found this video before I purchase them but better late than never.😁
I won't bother with a painted plant, but a few of them, like the polka dot plant are thriving in my house. Yes, I killed a rex, but that does not mean I won't get another one. 90% of the plant death in my house is because the cat got it too many times or the dry 90 degree heat by the ceiling was too much for the plant (if I don't keep them up high the cat gets them).
You have a leaf loving cat! My cat used to be much more leaf obsessed too but I think he might have outgrown it, thankfully 😅 but hey at least the polka dot plant is cat safe for the most part! I fall for rex’s all the time lol
Mom got me a poka dotted plant as a house warming present it’s a pain .they get lengthy and have to be trimmed or pinched constantly and wilt if you don’t give them enough water .no on begonia I raised them when I worked at a plant shop they get powdery mildew if you water them too much and don’t give them enough water .
You made me laugh when you said you knocked your plant over and it had no roots and when you said all the leaves will fall off of another plant and you will have only a twig plant
09:39 that is a ficus triangularis variegata.
Don't say I didn't, say I didn't warn ya
I wanted one once but I’m totally taking your advise on that Ficus. I’ll simply admire them at the store. 😀
This ficus is really the absolute trap, in which I fell. Twice....
You are absolutely right, those painted plants are an abomination. Whenever I see something like that I just think WHY. WHY would anyone do this to a plant??!
Editing to say you absolutely took me out with that fern "I pointed my camera at it and it just wilted"

"Those plants were the worst. Let's go to the next place" you had me literally laughing out loud!

You have been adding straight gasoline to my plant buying addiction. My husband isn't happy. Hahahah!

NO MORE PAINTED PLANTS. Probably covering problem areas with the paint. I love joining your shopping adventures.
yes Patrick, you are particularly right about the crotons because i live in the Caribbean and NOBODY ever thinks about that plant as anything remotely close to being an indoor plant, it craves completely full sun all year.

Thank you for your kind words! I’m so sorry you’re going through a rough time! Consider yourself warned that plant mom life is pretty relaxing and fun 🥰🙌🏽🌿
I love when you do these videos! I've been walking around the stores saying, "traps, traps" when I see some of these.
Lol! I do that too!
You are HILARIOUS 😂🤣😅 ‘the painted plants industry must be stopped’
I am ready with my protest 🪧 signs when you are ✊🏽
Stop the vibe on this video had me cracking up!!!! I TOTALLY agree with peperomia. My watermelon one BROKE MY HEART. Those painted succulents are so depressing!
Lmao! 💛💛💛
Patrick, you and Nick Peleggi are my favorite plant UA-camrs. You're like the Bob Ross of the plant world. Also, I must have gotten lucky, I have a big box store palm that has been doing great for about three years. 🌴 Keep up the good work! 💚
I am honored and so not worthy of the Bob Ross comparison but I will gladly take it! Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement! 🥰🙌🏽💚

Oooh these words! I’m not deserving! 😂

Had a few traps in my day lol....lesson learned
Awesome Patrick.the money I've saved by watching your video.NZ
Happy to help! 🙌🏽
The way I laughed about that Peperomia catfishing you. I also cannot keep ripple Peperomias alive.
Lmao! I was scarred by that catfishing! Peperomias, smh, glad I’m not the only one! 💚

Just in time for my lunch break!!
The sound effects and when you zoom in on plants you don't recommend was giving me life. I love your videos.
Lol thank you!!
Some plants get nervous when they see you coming.
lol!
I've had a small pot of ivy for over 2 years that I got from a grocery store. Never had a problem with it. It has gone through neglect and it's still looking good. And for some perspective, I have killed many plants. 🙈

Yes, there are many plants that will never make it in the home😅🙌I enjoyed watching🤲🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Another great video!
Nice sharing bro👌🙏🙏
The faces 😎 and swoosh sound after 🤣
My Calathea did get spider mites. The only time I've ever had them. Peperomias are impossible too. I agree with every single thing you mentioned!
Ctenanthe! Yes! Love those 😍💚
Some ppl can grow these plants without major issue, but I agree on the Begonias, Maiden Hair Fern, an Fitonia. 💚
I agree. All in good fun. But the comments suggest that I’m not the only one. I love fittonia. I didn’t include them in this list because I appreciate their ability to “cry for help” lol 💚
Here na sa new video mo.
Yehey! 🥰🙌🏽
Loved the ending!
Thank you for getting me out of my home! 😘
Thanks for mentioning Ivy
Love them but killed two and I’m still wondering why
Thank you thank you!!!!
Wonderful
The sound effects were the best!
Thanks 🌱💚🪴
I had several crotons. Crotons are definitely for the streets. Lolll I had crotons outside for months and they lived. Brought them from outside to inside and they died in one month.
For the streets! I like that! 😆💚
This was absolutely hilarious
I never thought about it til you said it but Omggg that is really sad about the painted plants not being able to photosynthesize 😢😢😢😢
Pointing out the exact Begonia that scared me off them for life 😂😂😂
Ahahah we brought home at least four of these (I've still got two maidenhair ferns BTW - not looking their best but we found a compromise).
Fabulous !
I agree with all your choices, I had all of them and they all died…..
me too!
It wasn’t t you. Either of you💚
I have like half these plants for a year and I thought they’ve been going good, now this video has me second guessing. This was very informative nonetheless.
I totally agree with all of these!!!
I can’t believe that plant crisped up when you pointed your camera at it ! Lol
I fell for one of those calatheas and not only did it die, but it brought spider mites home that infected a bunch of my collection and killed my nerve plant calathea and almost the rattlesnake calathea.
New to your channel and love your content. Thank you!
The sound jumpscared me 😭

Love to you and your handsome boyfriend
Your hair is fabulous
Your videos are delightful! I wish I had known about Begonia rex before, but now I'm addicted. They are so picky about their sun and water requirements.
Thanks for sharing 🥰
Love these videos! Thanks so much.
Who in their right minds are buying those painted succulents 🤦♀️ so sad!
I almost did because I didn’t realize they were painted 🤦🏽♀️😂🤣😅
I almost did because I didn’t realize they were painted 🤦🏽♀️😂🤣😅
💚
Love the sound effects😂😂😂👍
Mom got me a poka dotted plant as a house warming present it’s a pain .they get lengthy and have to be trimmed or pinched constantly and wilt if you don’t give them enough water .no on begonia I raised them when I worked at a plant shop they get powdery mildew if you water them too much and don’t give them enough water .
You made me laugh when you said you knocked your plant over and it had no roots and when you said all the leaves will fall off of another plant and you will have only a twig plant
