Khrushchev's strategic mistake of throwing Stalin under the bus ultimately destroyed their country. It is quite notable that in modern Russia, Stalin is regularly ranked as one of their country's greatest leaders. People still hold portraits of Stalin in protests/rallies. I have never seen any photos of people holding up portraits of Khrushchev or Gorbachev. He clearly did a lot right - turned a backward, superstitious, broken and hungry country that lost the First World War, and left on his death bed a Soviet Union that was a global superpower leading in science and in possession of nukes. Not bad....not bad at all!

Not really, the 5 year plans only become incredibly effective after Chairman Deng era after incorporating free market elements.... during Chairman Mao era 5 year plans is literally dysfunctional and disastrous.

Five Year Plans are vastly superior to having no plans, ROFL! It isn't just China that do 5 year plans. Other successful socialist nations like Vietnam and Bangladesh are doing the same, and look at where their economies are heading. As Chinese, we should acknowledge the contributions of our former teacher the Soviet Union who inspired our form of government and provided us with their expertise in technology and industrial development. The teacher is no longer there, but the student has grown up, and whether we like it or not, we are now the custodians of Socialism. And we, along with likeminded nations, have a duty to make it work, to promote our brand to the best of our ability, and make our teacher proud.

As a Bangladeshi I can assure you our country is not socialist (despite us having a five year plan). Although I would love my country to embrace socialist reforms but our current govt. (who seem to be getting more authoritative day by day) is more inclined to neoliberal policies which is a shame.

Five Year plans are very effective, glad to see china continuing to Plan it's economic Expansion. Just as USSR did and Germany prior.

Nope. China is Socialist. The State still owns most of the "commanding heights of the economy". The Socialist state coexists with a capitalist market for things that are better operated by the private sector. But the private sector is still below the State, not above the power of the State as in Western countries. China's government plans and provide strategic guidance on the national economy (and assistance to critical sectors) at the highest level, and the rest of the economy follows under a mixture of direct state control and market-drive forces.

I really appreciate videos like these so I can learn about China. The five year plan, overall, seems genius; I'm curious how they decide what to work on(they seem to be picking on the right things though recently.) Maybe if they relaxed some freedom of speech they could crowd source problems that the public has found and needs to be worked on or maybe with AI they could make it even more efficient
The state government *DO* crowd source problems for each plan. They do surveys, they mainly work with academic institutions and universities in order to make the plan. Individuals and private sector entities can also participate providing their opinions and concerns.
I do agree with relaxing freedom of speech to allow more discussions 👍🏻
In singapore, if one criticized gov. Means lawsuit directly from the prime minister. CHINA has more freedom of speech. 😂
China is leaded by engineers and scientists, not bankers and lawyers.

You have not mentioned much about the success of the governments effort in improving people’s living quality, in eradicating poverty and tech advancement. The way and tone you are producing this video still makes the viewers feel that China is a backward country but in fact it has overtaking many of the western counterparts and is quickly overtaking America as a super power. @@markchristie688 in such authoritative systems none dares question the authority. This is not freedom. People have the right to choose their fates. The "all-knowing" party ends up being an oligarchy system in which the ruling class benefits and people will have to not stray from the party's ideas to progress in politics or in general. It is not value-centered, but centered around who is the best "comrade". In democracies at least if you do not like the policies of a party you simply change it. You have the choice. And it's funny how China pushed away its Imperial past, having a small period of actual Republic and then moving on to an authoritarian regime, which some worship fanatically like religion. (funny how Communism replaces religion with just a party) Either people don't value freedom there or simply this regime is enforced on them through fear. Other countries have made huge leaps forward and retained their freedom of expression. Communism was never a solution to the problems. Oppression and lies won't head into actual progress. Innovation breeds progress and prosperity both material and mental. Innovation needs freedom of expression and personality. These two are under assault when they are not conformed to the rules of the party.
