Brother, I've recently caught the building bug and have gone through so many HOW TO videos, I lost count. But yours has to be, hands down, one of the top 3 online. From your tricks to tips, you hit in much more detail the art of building these guitars. Thanks a million for sharing your knowledge which could've taken me years to figure out on my own.
I like a lot of the features of your build! The press pins in the tailpiece are a good idea! Btw...I'm 58 and started building all kinds of guitars last Christmas, including cigar box guitars. I've never used the metric system more in my whole life! 👍😎🎸🎶
Recently became interested in CBG and found your channel and this video. Thank you for taking the time to create such a thorough instructional video! Very interesting and greatly appreciated!
Good build I prefer the Piezo pup sound, MORE blusey which to me is the idea behind a cigar box guitar. The "Muddy Waters"Delta blues is what I LOVE. If you ever get the chance to see the original "Cross Roads" with Ralph Macchio, watch it... fantastic movie!!! Keep building. I built custom electrics from 1977 until 2013. It's a great hobby. God bless: Stoney
Great videos and the grease zerk is a nice touch Could you share more info on the components you like to use and where to get them pick ups , strings etc thanks for posting these
Awesome video, I'm looking to build my first cbg very soon. One question, does grounding the string make a difference? Very nice guitar,I hope mine turns out half as good.
Very informative and entertaining video Ken! I am glad i found it because i am about to retire and looking for a hobby. I play guitar myself but building a full fledged guitar with six strings seems too intimidating to me, at least for now. I think i will try building a CBG just to see how it turns out and it will be my travel/ camping instrument to knock about and not have to worry about it much. Can you tell me where you source some of your parts like the pick-ups and the electronics?
Acoustic M Just so you're more willing to go ahead on your dreams... It's the same thing. Scale and measure for the intonation. Only difference would be the size and amount of strings.
Thanks for your video and I love the charm you put into that guitar. quick question , what do you have the 2 leads plugged into and could you just wire up the 2 outputs into 1 jack ? Also when you say match booking are you talking the old style matches /books, do you just glue them on? Thank again
Thanks John Carroll. The two leads are plugged into separate amps. My cigar boxes typically go to one man band slide blues guitarists who use transmitters instead of cables for the sake of mobility, simplicity of setup and the ability to plug into separate amps for different sounds, especially with the piezo. The matchbooks are digitized and then applied to the neck. There's a tutorial on how to do the graphics in my playlist (ua-cam.com/video/UZxagsPPEAY/v-deo.html )
I found the match-booking vid thanks, With the necks on your builds, do they bow much without a truss rod? I guess 3 or 4 strings don't put as much pressure on the neck as 6 .
Thanks for the question Jeff. Let's start off by saying the type of box I use is chosen because it is thick and hard to break but made from pressed sawdust.. That puts it behind the 8 ball from the start in terms of acoustic properties in comparison to some of the thinner more tone rich cigar boxes. That said, the sound holes help out some (you get an example out of one of my boxes in the F Holes episode that airs in a couple of hours). If you are a purist and going after the plain box look, coupled with natural sound, then probably no. As for me, I go for some acoustic property, some vintage sound and some trash distorted blues all in one. That means a Camacho 60 x 6 rigged with a piezo and a coil on separate jacks.
Hi Ken, Just sorta curious about why you choose to use 2 different inputs, 1 for each different pick up. Would it not be easier and more efficient to use a 3 way switch to control the pick ups, enabling the player to use 1 input and still separate and combine the 2 different pick ups, just my thought, thanks for posting!
Yes that would work but several of the artists that use my guitars run wireless pickups to two different amps. This setup allows for lots of different blends. Thanks for watching

Pretty informative video which has given me some new ideas. One thing in the video that caused concern was you installed the tuners the wrong way according everything I’ve learned. I was taught that the gear always faces down toward the tail, not up in the direction of the top of the headstock.
Gucci yes, but if you are doing 6 strings I'd recommend a larger box. I am actually building two. A 3 string box and a regular 6 string box. I have quite a bit of parts, this came up as an idea for it all.
Thanks Blackmamba. The volume controls are wired separately, one to a mini/humbucker and the other to a piezo. The idea is that they plug into two separate amps or separate channels on one amp. Wireless is becoming pretty common, so the cables go away. I did a video on the coil wiring: ua-cam.com/video/xKMhFtCt1t4/v-deo.html

I understand. Truss rod question. Answer, most CBG do not have a truss rod, as they are often folk instruments, thus crude in construction. Note I said most, doesn't mean one couldn't be built with a truss rod.
Ronald Towe While I agree with you, I think what makes these cool is the artist whom made it also had their own vision. Do you have one you have made yet? I am working on my own.

Does the graphic applied to the front of the guitar affect its acoustical properties (i.e. does this guitar have to be electrified)?

Not yet. Any tips?
Holy crap I am smoking that same Camacho right now

A thousand hits! Thanks everybody. More on the way
Enjoyed your video, where did you get that pickup?

That's why everybody looks at me when they tune. Thanks. Got one on the rack now. I'll give that a whirl.
beautiful work...do you sell them?
N'DIDGENOUS occasionally.
Informative...I wanna build a 6 stringer.
Me too stay tuned
@@paulmerojunkpileguitars awesome!!

Where do you get that adjustable bridge?
eBay is loaded with them. Search “Archtop floating bridge”. Thanks for watching
Can you use an aluminum beer can instead of a canning lid?
NorthMissFish sure. The copper tape is the key

Epiphone casino hanging on the wall?
B6 schilke good eye but it’s a Montgomery Wards Airline circa 1955. Here’s thus very guitar in action: ua-cam.com/video/ptDRAvnQsow/v-deo.html
A bead of calking DOES NOT make the box stronger. Glue in some 1/4 round with epoxy glue. That will make the box indestructible .
But the stray pet hair that accumulates in the corners on the calking makes it stronger, right?
@@paulmerojunkpileguitars Nope. You would have been better off NOT showing anyone how you build these. Who's going to buy one now?

maybe just shrink wrap the middle terminal the others won't be long enough to reach :)
But that would bankrupt my "King of Shrink Wrap" cousin

sea sick, stop waving the camera, borrow a tripod please
It’s gotten better 200 episodes later
Cool guitar, but had to stop watching. The constant motion of the video was too distracting.
Too much camera movement for a person with vertigo.
I mean no disrespect but the constant motion back and forth made me want to puke🤪🤭
