    This is something that feels like a long time coming. Someone as masterful at his craft showing some of the things to get into the care of bees. Going over all of the things someone like yourself would get their hands on to get started would be worth its weight in gold.

    I'm now using Apimaye Insulated beehives with a R 6.93 insulation value. Temperature out side last night in Tacoma Washington was 25 and inside the hive was a pleasant 82 degrees and 52% humidity. I have BroodMinder scale and temperature/humidity sensors installed and can read it right off my cell phone 24 hours a day. After switching from wood to plastic everything, I haven't had any more problems with wax moths. Jeff, I give you the credit for the all plastic triple coated frames. After watching one of your UA-cam videos I thought I would give it a try. Wouldn't you know it, the bees immediately jumped right on those frames and started drawing them out.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  2 роки тому +2

      It's to bad I did not include the Apimaye HIve in the video, they are an excellent choice for so many reasons, and I'm happy you are reaping the benefits of using them. However, for most beekeepers, cost is always a point of consideration, and they are on the more expensive side, but well worth the extra expense....especially in colder areas. Thanks so much for reminding me about them and taking the time to watch the video. Until the next time, God's peace.

    Thanks for the review. A respectful comment on joinery. There is a total of 9 5/8" of endgrain on each of the dovetail and boxjointed joinery. The amont of less endgrain on the tapered dovetail pin is quite inconsequential. There have been tests done that actually show that box joints are indeed stronger than dovetails, assuming glue is used. A prewaxed box like the Hoover is impossible to glue.

      You better not show your bees this video, you may have a revolt on your hands when they see a bee box is suppose to be solid on all sides, including the top and bottom of the hive. They are so accustomed to having full ventilation due to rot and open joints, they may just pack up and leave. However, I will give you this, you do have some really tough bees. Merry Christmas to the entire Rooster Clan. God's peace brother.

    Have you ever considered manufacturing and producing your own line of beekeeping boxes? Taking the best ideas and concepts from all of the starter kits and combine them into something you can manufacture and sell for the Abbey? You could even include and option with plexiglass panels for those who want to watch how industrious those little girls are.

    Mr. Ed, I been using Premier double wax foundation from Hillco and their other woodware, nothing but a positive experience with their products. I was looking at the Vevor hive boxes and it seems like a great value except for the top cover is known to come apart like you see on the inner cover (loads of Amazon reviews with similar complaints). This was a really great example of quality materials and workmanship from someone who knows beehive equipment and wood craft.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  Рік тому +1

      I sure am glad to hear you enjoy watching bee videos even though you are not a beekeeper yourself, I think that's awesome! There are many reasons why beekeepers do that, but I think most do it as a reminder that the particular hive the brick is on needs to have attention, and the brick is the way of identifying which hive that is. Thanks for watching. God's peace Al.

    I just bought 2 kits from Amazon simply because all my equipment is pretty old and looking tatty. Anyhow, I got 2 kits labeled “Bee Castle” for $229.95 each but I had quite a few Amazon points and there was also a coupon for some money off. The set is very similar to the Vevor kit - 2 deeps and 2 mediums with frames, foundation (plastic, waxed), queen excluder, entrance reducer, screened bottom board, top board, telescoping cover. They’re beautiful waxed pine boxes. I’m pretty pleased. I don’t run 2 deeps so essentially I can set up 4 colonies if I add top/bottom pieces for 2 of them from my stockpile.

    Mr Ed, great video especially the way that you pointed out the difference in the joint types. Also, the foundation with and without wax! No wax on foundation could cause lots of problems for a beginner, I would think the bees would build lots of wonky and bridge comb in it if they even stayed and what a mess that could be! Wanted to let you know that this video helped me a great deal when it came to deciding where to spend my hobby money.
    I found that with many hours of looking at on line stores there is a huge price range and quality of build available and they are not connected in any way. Start with shipping. Find someone close to home (16 hours round trip) and drive to them and make a deal if at all possible.. There are no deals over the computer.
    Think ahead a year at least... I almost bought too many boxes and not enough frames... 40-50 frames to build out a strong hive plus honey frames adds up real quick.

    Good Evening Sir, love your videos which are extremely informative and appreciated. I purchased two May Bee kits (2Deep/1 Med) which are (appear) pretty much the same as the Honey/Bee Castle lines (My belief). The challenge I face I'm my planning relates to the boxes themselves. Planning for the future I am hopeful to utilize deeps for the brood and mediums for the honey. I will need additional mediums for a number of purposes which are quite expensive.
    Vevor boxes appear to be more economical and I was wondering if their boxes can be successfully integrated into the other beginner packages?
    Thanks again and Happy Saturday....

I think Pura is going to make quite an impression on many beeks. Their wax for the foundations comes out of South Dakota and is 2nd to none. Jeff, thanks for the video and mentioning to add wax to the foundation.

The Hoover boxes looked great and for a modest price point, but the comments below about outer wax durability and unpaintability after weathering for a year sounds pretty unfortunate. Not sure if it's worth the investment.
    How were the handles on those compared to the others? They look small/shallow and my fear as a beginner is dropping a super because of gloves not fitting into the holes for a snug grip. Thanks again!

As far as selling bees, I do sell some of them, but only right in my own area. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours as well. God's peace, and best wishes on your move.

    On the hoover boxes I had to trim some wax off the joints to get em to fit. Extra work but it came out great

      I had the exact same issue, but a little trimming and they went together just fine. Thanks for watching. God's peace Ashley.

    If I'm not mistaken, cedar is quite resistant to water. Also, most insects do not like cedar, so that may be why the beez like it, as it might keep away other insects.

      I can't say for sure why bees like cedar, but it is water resistant and many insects do not like it's smell. All I know for sure is I have pulled many a hive from cedar sided houses. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    Thanks or the video. Would a new beekeeper need 2 deep brood boxes in their beginner kit? Wouldn’t one deep and maybe 2 honey supers “bee” better?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  11 місяців тому +1

      You are verl welcome. It is a matter of preference, some beekeepers use a single deep brood box and then honey supers, and others, like myself, prefer two deeps supers for the brood box and then the honey supers. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Bubba.

    Have you seen Vino Farms bee barns? New England winters inspired him, they are changing the way the bees produce and grow their hives. The insulation keeps the temps even so all the bees have time to harvest and nurture.

    Great job and informative. One question I had and that I never learned correctly was on pre-waxed frames. Do the bees still add wax to the foundations or do they draw out what was supplied? Thanks, Merry Christmas, and God bless!

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  2 роки тому +1

      To my knowledge, if the foundation has only a single layer of wax applied to it from the manufacturer, it is not enough for the bees to draw out and they will need to produce more.For that reason I would strongly suggest getting the most wax on the foundation that you can possibly get. Still, having a little bit of wax is far better than no wax at all. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. Merry Christmas to you and yours as well. God's peace.

    Hi Mr. Ed, as an old wood guy I can let you know a nail has a stronger hold than a screw. It will outlast a screw by years.😊

    • @JeffHorchoff

      When in the shop building things that stay indoors, I use screws, but on the outside where moisture can get into the wood so much easier, a nail will hold longer....especially if it is ring shanked. Merry Christmas Bob, and God's peace.
