R 22 or R 410a can be checked with ONE gauge as though you are charging a WINDOW UNIT (package unit) whose copper tubes start having low pressure and build up frost on them. You tap into a small copper line with a tap and use one gauge and check the one pressure for a specific temperature.

Great content and I've been searching for a log time! Thanks!!! I had a tech check my A/C on an R410A Rheem unit. As soon as he saw the high side was 320 and touched the small line and said it was too hot (it was on the hot side vs warm) he said that the coil was not good. It was 95 degrees out. The coil seemed clean and it was clear and in good condition (no corrosion). We hosed down the coil and the temp went down but he re-confirmed the coil was bad. Can a coil be bad if it seems okay (air flows through is that the fins look great)? I trust the A/C rep but for my own learning.

I saw many articles about min. of 10 degrees superheat at evaporator suction line and 20 degrees at near condenser to avoid flooding back from compressor manufacturers. So my question is which one we should go by, In Texas, ambient temp can be 75f in the morning and 100f in the afternoon. My ac superheat taken at suction line on the outside unit can be 5 in the morning and 20-25 in the afternoon. I keep my thermostat setting at 77 degree throughout the summer. If I depend on the target superheat from my outdoor dry bulb and indoor wet bulb temp, it could be 0 superheat sometimes according to the chart.

Great video.. I been running into problems like not being able to get my low side above 100 psi.. can you make a video explaining why and solutions
Unfortunately in the field, it’s quite different then in a controlled classroom setting. Let’s assume the unit was installed correctly for the space, then this is a good lesson. However in the field we all know a lot of times that is not the case. High efficiency condensing units run cooler and CFMs can effect TXVs. So the easiest way is to use your suction gauge and check the charge under a high load condition.
I notice what looks like a capillary tube from the condenser before it leads to the liquid line. I'm not sure what it's there for but it really causes the liquid pipe to feel cold. I got a mini split and I guess things must operate differently in a mini split.
Because R 22 and R410 a on the PT chart has pressures as though they are mixtures I would use them in such places like a window unit that is low on freon, like a small package unit as though as you only need to check one pressure for specific temperatures.

The pressure windows that you state for both high and low side pressures work for residential, commercial, and industrial units? Or only certain HVAC system settings?
The reply was we only use sight glasses in refrigeration not AC.. When I started doing AC in the early 70's many Carrier units came with sight glasses, car AC came with sight glasses. If you have say 10 degree sub cooling you should have a solid flow of liquid in the liquid line.. I do realize units with multiple rows of small tubing are easy to overcharge.

Working on a unit with a 4-5 degree subcool when I add refrigerant the liquid line temp increases with the head pressure still giving 4-5 degrees SC. I change Evan filters. I replaced condenser fan motor that was overheating. What am I missing here?

Hi. I was working on a commercial A/C 12 1/2 tons.
I checked the CFM. I'm close to 5000 CFM.

1: When I try to get 10 subcooling, it may play between 3 degree
to 12 degree.
2: I can't get a superheat between 10 to 15 degree.
it stay between 22 to 25 superheat.
The suction line outside is about 20 feet.
My questions are: The fact that the subcooling is changing that much, should I change it?
Also: if the superheat is that hi, is it another reason to change it?
If the low pressure sensor is open due to low charge , how do you allow it to run prior to checking charge ?
What if I have TXV metering, but my condenser nameplate doesn’t have sub cooling target? The manual doesn’t show it either.
What the low ands high ranges for heating. Inside temp, 70 and outside temp 30. AC works fine but the heating does not. Duct temp gets up 90 and then gets cold. EH temps n after a few min. Just had the R22 topped of. the HVAC tech said, pressures are fine, did not resolve the problem. this is 2 x now on the same problem. Not defrosting, OD fan is still running. It might be a bad DF board? I'll check it later today. Or the pressures are still low? That is why I'm asking. thanks!
How do you charge the unit when it start cycling because it doesn't have enough freon in it won't stay running so how do you charge it

Hello, thank you for this video. I have a question - my R22 bottle has the red and the blue valves but my R22 manifold has the yellow input house. Do you know by any chance where I connect yellow house? To the red or the blue valves?
I would suggest not connecting them to anything!

I have a LG split unit, it was cooling the previous night , but today morning it wasnt cooling at all, so i checked the suction line is warm and the liquid line is hot at the outdoor unit. What could be the problem. Kindly advice

Lately, we been using R 427 and R 407 as replacements for R22. However, our gages only have the common readings: 410, 404, 22. How similar or different are the temperatures for 427 and 407 to R22?
You can download a PT chart app on your phone and input the psi on your low gauge and set it with the r427 or many others and it should show the temperature of the that refrigerant. And you can compare

We use 407 as replacement for R22, however, we do NOT use it on heat pumps because R407 is a blend.

We don't use sight glasses for air conditioning, only refrigeration. In ac, we measure subcooling to see not only if the refrigerant is in the fully liquid state but how many degrees of subcooling are present, thanks!

How many years should freon last my unit is like 4years old maybe 3 and its blowing a lil cold and warm could it be freon or capacitor?
Refrigerant (aka freon) will out live the equipment... If a leak develops within the system, the refrigerant will leak out at a rate determined by the size of the puncture. A slow leak can take many months before the comfort level is noticeable. And most likely, the capacitor has nothing to do with your situation.

What if my my label doesn't specify the TXV rating? Has other pieces of info but not a TXV rating.
It should say subcoolin grating on the outdoor rating plate or on the under side of that shroud. If it doesn't and it is a single speed unit, 11 degrees of subcooling can be used, thanks!
@@acservicetechchannel My older Trane heat pumps don't give a target subcooling. Instead, the service facts include a graph chart plotting liquid line temp (horizontal X axis) vs liquid line pressure (vertical Y axis). Within the graph is a slight arc line that indicates the proper charge. At the intersection point of your X and Y values on the arc line, is below the arch line, then add refrigerant. If your intersection dot is above the arch line, then recover refrigerant. I don't know why Trane does this method. Seems like a little extra work.

A coil with capillary tube,,is that the same as a piston ?
A capillary tube or a piston controls the amount of liquid entering the A coil by restricting liquid flow, if you overcharge a system the low side gauge pressure will be above normal and the low side gauge pressure will be above normal. A TX valve controls the flow of liquid with a temperature sensing bulb, the TX valve maintains a steady A coil temperature, as a result the low side pressure remains relatively stable, even if the system is overcharged.
Yes I know that they only talk about piston and txv valve,, so is cap tube same as piston?
Yes cap tube and piston both fall under the term "fixed orifice" but the piston chamber can bypass refrigerant through and around the piston itself when the refrigerant flows in the other direction where the cap tube needs an external bypass, thanks!

My boss says mix 22 with 407c. I hate it. According to the maker you can add up to 25% of total charge without adding oil but the saturation temps are too different for my liking. There is no good replacement imo.
