  • Take a walk with me and my son as we gather up a FULL LIMIT of SNOWSHOE HARE from our SNARE line! I also show you how to butcher and cook a wild rabbit. Eating store bought food all the time is boring! Let's live a little like people used to, hunt, gather, cook!

    Thanks for your donations Hwan, John, Tony, Brad, Fiete, John, Dan, Justin, Michael, Stephen, Aaron, Brad, Shaun, Brian, Kurt, Brian, BC Dirt, Sally, Michael!
    Later, I will show you how to prepare a wonderful meal of rabbit stew with carrots, onion, potatoes, garlic, and spices. I'll also use some of the tender meat to make a pulled rabbit sandwich, a great meal from left-overs!
    I will show you how to set snares on rabbit trails, how to create ideal conditions to catch even more rabbit and hares. Snaring rabbit is not difficult, but you need to understand the basics.

      I have a feeling your son had a good understanding before you even explained anything. Those situations are tough even as a full grown man, its not ideal but its a necessary fact of life. Sometimes things don't work out as planned and you have to fix the situation. Another great video. Keep it up.- Chris.

    That was a really cool moment, was that the first time he's been involved in dispatching an animal with you? I'm waiting for the right timing with mine, my oldest is almost 9 but she's pretty sensitive. I don't expect her to do it herself yet of course but I find its important that she fully understands what's going on. I might have her watch you and Holden on the other unlisted video at some point, he's close to her age.

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  6 років тому +11

      My son said he was ready, but it was pretty hard for him. If you're not sure, wait a bit longer. Naturally kids can handle it, they are designed to, but it's shocking to see it when you're older than if you just grew up near it all your life.

    • @pittiesmom10
      @pittiesmom10 6 років тому +6

      The Wooded Beardsman I could see the slightest moment of hesitation you had when he said he was coming with you to end the hare that was still kicking. He may not have been as ready as he thought but I commend you for letting him make that choice for himself. My husband wants to take our oldest hunting soon, she's becoming proficient with her recurve, but I'm thinking she's not quite ready to be the one behind the arrow. Might settle for just having her tag along and learn to be silent in the woods.

    Your boy is so cool and smart and I love how patient you are with him. I learned to fire a bow at like 6 or 7 years old and I think I learned how to fish even earlier. A bb gun a year after that. A rifle by 10 years old and a shotgun by 11 or 12... but my dad would very easily get mad. By the time i was 13 or so I refused to go on family vacations because I knew most of the trip would be my dad getting super angry with everyone and cussing us all out for the rest of the drive....... my point is that you're doing it right!

    I really love the talk after the cleaning of the animals. You could tell he was a little upset about it. But you were patient and talked it out with him. I'm sure he got some time to decompress in between as well. You never seemed impatient or angry or shameing. Didn't force the situation.
    He is super brave to have wanted to learn to dispatch with you. I don't think I could have done it. I want to try it first with fish. I have watched my dad do it in the kitchen sink with guinea pigs, rabbits, old hens, and pigeons (He's from Peru)
    Harder since I'm older but I think it is a very valuable lesson and I want to learn. The lesson of something sacrificing and the value of food/meat is important. So no waste.
    I do the same with picking out bones when I cook for my family. Bones give amazing broth flavor too!

    One rare time I was out with my dad, he shot a grouse we went to a place with water, and without cleaning the grouse, he covered it with a thick cake of mud, build a good fire, and heated up some large stones,and dug a fairly deep hole, when the stones got hot, buried them in the hole and on top pit the grouse, and buried it!! we left for a few hours, 4 or 5 hours later we came back, he dug up the grouse, he cracked the mud on a rock, and pulled it off, took most of the feathers too, he then cleaned it and we ate! It was a very tasty dinner!!!

    Awesome video! The intro was perfect in my opinion and I loved how you included the segment where you were talking to your son about killing the hare. You make awesome videos and seem to be an awesome parent as well! Good job!

    I admire what you do and I think it’s great that you teach your son! Everything you make looks delicious. With respect to you taking the time to share your hard work I wish your videos were shorter. It would be easier to keep up with your videos. Either way thank you for taking the time and sharing brother!

    Thanks for the seperate video on how to skin and clean small animals it has been educative and hope you will show us how it's done with large animals, I live in The Netherlands so it's not really common to hunt because we live really cramped up and not alot of forests with wild animals are around anymore so the very idea of hunting for youre food has been long forgotton. It's hard to learn these things you show us in my country so i appreciate it alot thank you!

      He'll think twice about tossing rocks at live animals, that's for sure. I know a few kids who could use that lesson...ya gonna eat that?? :)

    We chicken fry our rabbits then pop them in a Dutch oven with 3/4 cup water and put in oven at 350 for a hour.. the fry pan u scrape everything loose add 2 tblspoons of all purpose flour a tablespoon of oil or butter stir it until the flour sucks up all grease add 2 cups of milk salt black pepper to taste whisk it until it thickens and is bubbly !
