    *TO THE VIEWER, everything we collected was preserved and nothing was wasted. Most of the meat either was kept by Jeremy so he could eat his wild foods diet for another week (documented on his channel), or was shared with family and friends. Some suggest that we took too much, but what will we eat tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year? In survival as in life, we built up stock so that we don't go hungry, or have to live hand-to-mouth, thanks for refrigerators and freezers, we can store foods for very long periods of time without spoiling so that is what we did! Long term storage is important to smooth out the luck that comes from hunting and foraging, some days are good, some are horrible, but if you have a stockpile of food, then those rotten days, are bearable. Humans are the top predators, we are in charge of keeping everything in balance.*
    *We just launched Season 2 of our SURVIVAL CHALLENGE! Full

    You got to use the rake, cool. The chaff is always a problem. For long term, although I have not tried this exactly, the berries and chaff could be set out to dry in the sun on boards. The chaff will dry up easily and can be wind winnowed away for a cleaner product. Or just pick quickly and graze on berries at your leisure. Then there is all the other tips I listed on the other video, somewhere. Massive cat fish, biggest I've seen is around a foot, not many here. We get a similar fish to the fall fish and call them chubs, a trash fish, I should try one someday. Some rivers are loaded with them. More on the blueberries, I think I have mentioned this, a string trimmer will cut the bushes back to ground level, do this in the fall or early spring, fall is better, it will spur new fresh growth which will yield more fruit buds the following years. Are cat fish fatty?

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  7 років тому +6

      The catfish are pretty fatty, very white and good meat. I did end up sifting through the berries, it was very fast and ideal for this since I could sort through by the campfire later. I'll have to try again when the berries are actually in season! Thanks again, I will keep it in use, for sure.

  • @carsongoodman5581
    @carsongoodman5581 7 років тому +4

    All those berries and I still haven’t seen a wild wine video! I think those choke cherries would be a lot easier to get down as a liquid. Great video, and that catfish is baby throw it back:)

    This is a fantastic series gentlemen! I just found your channel recently and I respect the work and hardship that goes into making these videos. Other than the issues with the camera, I'd say you both had a pretty good turnout.
    I would also like to point out how you dispatch the fish, that definitely looks much more efficient that letting it flip around madly, never tried that myself. It's cool to see you trying out things alongside some of the old time-tested techniques. Thank you both for a great adventure, while also treating our outdoors with respect and not letting anything go to waste.

    you know , when y'all started this 2nd season , I was hoping y'all would eat better than you did last year. . then , as y'all started having better luck with the traps , and caught the beavers , , and then caught the groundhog ,, and then caught the nice rainbow , , I was very happy for you both :-) and then when Jer brought in the new camera , , , and a young bear , , , sheesh , , , I didn't know what to think. . was your location last year just so bad or what was it this year that made that much difference ?

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  7 років тому +11

      Last year we followed the rules like good sportsman, sport fishers, hunters...this year we looked at things differently and used nuisance game laws, and trapped nuisance animals which are normally not in season at this time, so we opened up a bunch of doors. There are a lot of beaver, for example, but we aren't allowed to trap them just anywhere, so we trapped these on private property....otherwise, that wouldn't have been on the menu, same for the groundhog and hare. In August, hunting and trapping aren't open,....that's why last year we just fished and hoped for more wild edibles...that were also not in season.

    That does indeed look to be a Fallfish, they are in the same family as Chubs and other minnows, as well as carp

      Blueberry Bonanza I was thinking it looked like a carp with those scales, but wasn't sure with that face, I've never seen many of these species in Northern Texas

    Great catch gentlemen!
    That trout looked delicious.
    If that's coconut oil your rubbing on your beard, youshould eat that and rub fish fat on your beard. You'll get tougher, fish better not to mention how many critters you'd
    be able to lure into striking distance! lol
    Thank you once again.
    Oh yeah,you gotta fry a couple pieces of that catfish. I'd let you cheat that much.

    This is pure survival living. When he speaks of the fish eye ball containing lots of nutrition you would need for survival.

    • @backyardsounds
      @backyardsounds 7 років тому

      Garrett Lauzon that is 1000% correct. Largest minnow species.

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  7 років тому +2

      Yup, for sure. I looked it up and it's 100% a fall fish. Not bad eating for a fat minnow, but not as good as other fish.

      Looks to me like what we in the UK call a chub.

      +Mad Munchie - No I haven't eaten one, although I believe they are eaten in Poland and maybe other Eastern European countries. Generally speaking we don't eat many freshwater fish here apart from trout, salmon and in some places perch, bream and pike. All the places I fish are run by fishing clubs and they stock the lakes - which means they have spent money on them, so they take a dim view of people taking the fish away (in fact its strictly forbidden).
      I caught a chub of 5lbs 5oz once out of a local river but I put it back after weighing and photographing it. Let somebody else have the pleasure of catching it! :) Oh yes... I also caught a rainbow trout from the same river which weighed over 8 lbs. It had escaped, along with many others, from a trout fishery during a flood. I ate that!
