Ever get the urge to brand the Periphery logo on your forehead?
Justin Bonitz from Tallah got 3 dots in a triangle formation tattooed on his head, but not in reference to Periphery I don’t think
I have it on my wrist lmao
Yeah for sure, might get it tatted when I’m of age for that. Forehead may be a tad outrageous though
The Walk will always be a goated song by Periphery
It tickles the Meshuggah fanboy inside me 🥰
Hey! Good to see you here
That was my first ever Periphery song that I heard back in 2011 it holds a special place in my heart
baaaaaased
This to me is my favourite periphery album. I think they’ve improved but the originality and brilliance of this album is too good. It’s very raw but so innovative and has some of my favourite kind of contrasts between Spencer’s kind of original vocals and misha and jakes growly riffs. Plus racecar is a masterpiece
Similar thoughts for One, Gnosis, måsstaden and Februus
Same dude
I think their compositions have improved but they haven't made a better album yet. Also their style of heavy music on p1 and p2 js just far better than everything after clear. Tracks like Everything is fine are just too try hard IMO and not fun anymore. Zyglrox is pure fun, really everything on this album is pure fun and the craziest drumming I've heard on an album too
Matt really tore up that roland kit
@@HugoStiglitz88 I’m glad someone agrees. I used to be very hit or miss with this album but now each song offers something different to the other and I genuinely don’t think there’s a bad song on the album. The instrumentals are insane too
@@jimmymckie2272and it's funny because this album has the least genre variety, but the songs manage to be the most distinct to eachother as well. Idk how Misha managed that (he wrote the whole thing, and Jake helped with Racecar) but hes truly a prolific song writer
I'm just wondering when he becomes a game composer because he has the chops to do it 1000%
The riffs and chord progressions on this album are absolutely out of this world, nothing before or since has sounded anything like it.
10 years ago this band along with born of Osiris, after the burial,Veil of maya, betraying the martyrs and Volumes were the real shit, crazy how time flies.
The Contortionist too
Still waiting for a Racecar remaster
Misha himself calls Periphery a Meshuggah rip off band.
4:30 Jetpacks Was Yes! has definitely brought me to tears a few times. If you like that track, they re-recorded it on the Icarus EP shortly after this album. Search up Jetpacks Was Yes! 2.0
Frak the gods rules
This album got me into the prog metal/djent scene. I remember listening to it being like 15 years old and being absolutely mind blown. Monumental.
Same ❤
Same at he age of 49 y
This was the album that opened me to the true heavy prog/djent metal that we see now. I had never heard anything like it. I played this into the absolute ground.
I agree the album becomes “bloated” by the end. My personal opinion is Racecar is my favorite and most played off the album. But definitely go back and listen to it on its own.
But I honestly don’t go back to P1. I got back to P2 and Alpha/Omega waaay more.
I feel this way when I listen to the vocals. I could never get tired of the instrumental version of this album though.
Sumeriancore was the Best era of core music. I still remember coming across the Icarus lives vídeo and get blown away because it was so technical and catchy. This album redefined My taste in music
Juggernaut is their best IMO. Features their most cohesive songwriting while taking a more serious approach compared to their other albums. Highly recommended!
Underrated 😔
Couldn't disagree more. P1 is the better collection of songs and that's what matters the most. Concepts are cool but not as important as the quality of the songs.
I am a fairly new fan, there are still some aspects I dont like fromt the band, but for now if I could rank them:
1. P4
2. P3
3. Juggernaut
4. P2
5. P5
6. P1
@@HugoStiglitz88 after P2 I think they lost their edge. People eat it up though. Newer stuff is bloated and disorganized ( in not a good way ) to my ears
@@nathansterling639 The newer stuff is too many cooks in the kitchen, the fact that P1 was written solely by Misha is a strong point imo
There’s some songs off this album that Spencer re recorded his vocals for that are amazing that you should check out in your own time. This album really was ahead of its time
This album is definitely my favourite. A lot of this material is pulled from Misha's earlier solo project Bulb which I listened to prior to the band so it's very nostalgic compared to anything afterwards. Tesseract, Textures, and Fellsilent were also on the playlist and really got me hooked on this kind of sound.
Man Textures, Fellsilent 😮💨😮💨 you bring back some memories. What a Time it was that stuff came out and you couldn‘t believe what you hear
With the release of PV I just went through and listened to all of Peripherys albums back to back, and it's absolutely wild to hear how they have evolved over the years, especially production and Spencer's vocal performances.
While I love P1, man what they have released since imo blows it out of the water, I'd love to hear this album with Spencer as he is now.
Spencer's singing now, and of course some mixing and instrumental tweaks to make it sound better
@@darkphoenix2 Yeah for sure. As much as the sound of that album is iconic (and it still holds up really well), id love to hear it with their more modern sound for sure.
If you've never heard Juggernaut. YOU MUST!!! Double album perfect that showcases their best songwriting to date. Chills moments galore, beautiful choruses, insane breakdowns, dozens of foreshadowing and retroactive callbacks. It is not only my favorite Periphery album, but my favorite album of all time. None can replace
No it doesn't lol
Omega and stranger things are in their top 3 but otherwise juggernaut has some of their weakest material
@@HugoStiglitz88 🤡
Hi Drew! Thanks for reacting to the djent classic haha! :)
Thanks man! Seen your initial comment after I changed the title😂😂
I’m ashamed of myself ngl - I usually jump all over these things when other channels make spelling mistakes in their titles😂😂
Appreciate you looking out for me though🥰
Oh haha no problem bud! Always happy to help and since the vid still had 0 views, I was hoping you’ll see it, and then after I realised you actually changed it I removed the comment quickly haha 😂 No shame in anything, we all make mistakes! Keep up the good work and Take care! 😊
When I listened to this album for the first time back in 2011 it literally changed my life and polished my music taste. P1 made me realize the prog/djent scene had something promising for the next few years and boy was I right. 12 years later the genre and the band are stronger than ever. One of favorite Periphery riffs of all time is All New Materials intro, but it’s a tie with Luck As A Constant’s main riff off of P2.
1:38 no arguments here, I’m right there with you!
This album really defined djent and as messy and raw as it is, it is really a collection of Mishas best material. I think the band has evolved since this and refined there sound into something special. Every record feels in some way bigger than its parts, where P1's parts are bigger than the complete package.
Idk how to explain this but I always thought Zyglrox sounds like how that word is spelt 😂
As much as I can agree with your thoughts on the record being too long
You have to remember that when Periphery put this record out, they had to consolidate all the material they had down to this debut full length. Not only that, it was a Single album deal at that time. How this record performed for them would determine what they could ask for next time around.
It was a win win for fans and the band alike. Full versions of some songs that were only online as ideas and demos, and an action packed record to tease a label with. "See!!!! We're the gooderest!"
So much complaining during Racecar lol. I don’t think he even noticed the Jeff Loomis solo
I’m personally a P2 fanboy but this band is and will forever be my absolute favorite. Talented, innovative, outstanding. Every album is I’m it’s own right incredible.
this album is just perfect ! P1 ❤
This album will always hold a special place in my heart, but P3 is definitely their best work.
Absolutely love this album. Seen them live a bunch of times. Once opening for KSE and they blew them away! Few times with Deftones! Always thought this would be the soundtrack playing if you got sucked into a Tron universe lol.
Welcome to the club, bud.
P1 is definitely on the long side and I might've cut a track or two from it... but yeah, you definitely NEED to listen to racecar in isolation. It's the best thing under the sun.
Misha LOVES Meshuggah.
I heard p1 when it was released in 2010, had no clue what I was getting into. I haven’t been the same since!
P1 is POSSIBLY my favorite album. Either this or Juggernaut as a whole.
I really think some p1 is one of those albums you have to just slowly let grow on you over time. Listening to it all the way is something I have done before, but in the background of other activities. I can only imagine how tired Drew's brain was after an entire album and THEN listening to racecar. The last song is my favorite off the album, but that's because I went back and listened to it on repeat a couple of times months after discovering the album. You have to let the album simmer on you for a while because it's SO jam packed with djent that you almost have to let your brain have gaps between to fully ingest every single little key piece of the album Periphery was trying to put on their record. If you don't care about that then just spin the fuck out of it! One of their best by far
This was fun to watch. It brought me back to when I first heard this album. Love it :D
Easily. I just got to know Periphery roughly 1 year ago. It took several week to listen through the P5 album, I had never dived into prog metal deeper than Mastodon, and a bit of Tool.
For example the Wildfire chorus "heartbeat haunts me" made me crazy, that skipped beats, and so one, there are so many details which were (and still are) mind-blowing for me.
Then I said, wow, it makes sense, the most entertaining, versatile music, from pop through jazz to metal. Then I started to go backwards, and Blood Eagle was like, ah, it is really too aggressive, skip it.... then I just familiarized with that, too. Juggernaut was an instant like. P2 was, ah, too raw. P1, forget about it, way too much for me...
And now, P1 is the top - with the others, and P3 is the second place. :-D
When I listen to The Walk (like 4 times a week) I always play the opening sections 3 times.
Well, I am heavily addicted 🙂
I had to confess these ow my feelings. Sorry!
P1 to me has always felt like a mix between Meshuggah and Pantera... Panshuggah, Meshtera?
This album is not available on spotify in Latin America, does anyone know why?
This is my favorite periphery album p1 is epitome of djent and prog the album has everything to offer , fell in love with the band after hearing " all new materials" and gradually went to "racecar"
Misha had tons of demos before the first records that had been making the rounds on forums. I had many of the songs as instrumentals before this record came out. What I'm saying is that they had a backlog before this record and people were expecting the hits to be on there. In my opinion though the record isn't too long, you're just impatient.
It really depends on individual preference/taste. Some people love the longer more progressive songs more than the shorter ones. However I do believe Periphery create their albums to be listened through the whole way in order. Musical progressive experiences, whilst still being able to like certain songs individually. It gives a bit of everything for many different people/preferences.
For example one of my favourite Periphery moments currently is the 4 min outro on Thanks Nobuo. I listened to it on a walk and had to close my eyes and walk slowly for the whole 4 minutes. It was beautiful. Not for everyone, but I love most of their longer songs and every moment in them.
I think if this album is re-released you just take up to Icarus Lives and make it a side A and make Totla Mad To Racecar and call it side B. I would still listen to the whole thing but usually I just listen to Racecar on its own or the first 5 or so songs on their own lol.
P I will always be the quintessential modern djent album. Impartial to the instrumental version though. These riffs are all goated, especially zyglrox, this shit was revolutionary at the time, at least to high school me it was lmao
All New Materials and Zyglrox made me really practice guitar, like I felt like this band and Karnivool both pushed my playing abilities to another level just trying to learn their songs.
I think how you feel about this album really says a lot about your tastes, if you like this one you prefer a heavier, more technical style. This album to me is so chaotic and Spencer's vocals are clearly not as strong as the rest of their discography. I can't really listen to it regularly. Later Periphery stuff still has plenty of complex riffs and rhythms, but the melodic aspects are so much stronger and Spencer's influence gave them a lot more variety.
All that said, Jetpacks Was Yes, All New Materials, Icarus Lives, and Racecar are fantastic songs.
I'd looooove to hear this, but remastered with their modern production. I've always felt that this album just doesn't have the same bass and grit as their stuff since P4 which is a shame bc it would hit SO hard I think.
Also Racecar used to be my favourite song ever until Reptile took the spot. Idk what it is now but Reptile and Racecar are both still up there for sure.
now do Juggernaut!!
Bro was getting mad at the end💀💀
Spencer didn’t write the vocals for this album. He just got on board when they were recording this
Periphery II
Please do After The Burial Rareform or Wolves Within!!!!
U gotta listen to old veil of maya
I can't believe you're just hearing this
I have the same tesseract vinyl! Love that shit
Heavener > The Death We Seak AOTY. Just based off pure effort. This album compared to even The Place I Feel Safest is downtrending effort but better songwriting.
You have to react to The New Age - Outloud, saw Drew Fortune react, these guys are a mix of Thornhill / The Dali Thundering Concept.
If you haven’t heard Pridelands (Lake of Twisted Limbs), Deadlights (The Uncanny Valley), Above, Below (Beyond the Gradient Lake), Rogue (Aeon).. these are all songs off GOLDEN TICKET albums, meaning if you’ve never heard; buy and enjoy top tier metal.
Highly recommend to check out Periphery - Jetpacks Was Yes v2.0 off Icarus EP (2011). It is so much better than the original
I feel like the number of tracks an album has is much more likely to make it feel bloated than the actual length of the album. This is a perfectly lengthed record to me whereas an album made up of 15 3 min tracks would feel way too long despite being 25 mins shorter
P1 ❤
I think you should lower the music a bit less when you talk. Rest is gold
1:40 i disagree 😂 love periphery but that was simple riffinio, maybe these days when it was released it was somethink new
Bro watch again, I’m referring to the Meshuggah riff 😂 also doesn’t have to be the most technical riff to be iconic 🔥🔥
@@DrewFortune97 haha ok, maybe ive became too arrogant after all these years of listening 😂
Yo "totaly mad" makes vet musicians quit.
P2 mate. The best ever.
I am looking for Buried Inside fans, hit me up in the comments if you know them :D Great vids !
Other than make total destroy off periphery 2 This album is my go to for this band
P2 is their best and it's not close
P2 is their best. P4 is my favorite.
Still best album
This album is way to short, needs at least 8 more songs
big periphery fan here and this is their worst album for sure. not great vocals on this by spencer. hard time to stand it. i rarely listen to songs from this album in my preiphery playlist. Everything PII and onward is GOATED tho. love the band and saw them live for first time in january 24.
Still think that Juggernaut is their best album
P1 and P2 will always be benchmarks in the “Djent” scene without these albums the scene wouldn’t be where it is today.
I think everything before p5 is their best album. Don't see myself listening to p5 at all really, didnt like it.
What took you so long lmao
You could ask them today and they'll say they hated this album. Especially spencer lmao. But idk what it is about this album i just keep coming back to it. Probably my favorite they've ever released
Periphery would say themselves this isn’t their best but people forget to realize this album got so many people into djent! Probably why so many people love it. It was a game changer and something so different when it came out.
haven't heard p1 in a while, but after hearing p5, its crazy how Spencer's vocals evolved, its like, worlds better, dude is a beast now
Letter Experiment and Racecar are my favourite periphery songs which made P1 my favourite album. Other songs like Buttersnips, Icarus Lives and Totla Mad are also my favourites.😊
Literally walked into a Hot Topic one day when they had the new music stations with headphones and bought the ever loving crap out of this album and it probably stayed in my cd player for months and I came back to it frequently. I love all periphery albums but this one holds such a special place in my heart for sure.
Will never forget my drum teacher showing me this album when I was in high school. Both of us were just in awe of the drumming.
I am a huge Periphery fan, and I love all of their albums, but either PIV and PV are my two favorites of theirs.
Hahaha 11:40
Our attention spans have gotten much shorter in the last 12 years, I remember when most albums were at least an hour long now every album is barely 45 minutes. Its just a difference in eras
It's one of my favorite Periphery albums. Pure djentlemans right there
Totally agree that this album feels bloated, but it’s rough cause each song is sick. They definitely got better at earning their runtime as they went on
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks the last 3 songs are overkill. Good songs, but too much.
Time signature changes? Where?
Good album but easily their worst lol…
What meshuggah tune was dat at 1.35
No, but it's 2nd to P2.
I know the boys don’t wanna take time away from making new music to remake this album but oh my fucking god it would be amazing just to get even a few songs remade
I was 18 when that album came out. I listened to it every day for at least a whole year. I couldn't fucking believe how good it was.
With that being said, it's not their best album.
It's got a ton of good stuff, but they did get more mature and more sophisticated with regards to writing, arrangements and production.
My list would be:
1. P5 - P4 (I think they're equal to each other)
2. Juggernaut
3. P2 - P1 (... but if I'm being honest, the writing of P2 is a bit better... plus it's got Nolly and Mark)
4. Clear EP - Icarus EP (good stuff, but not real albums).
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. And I still rank it as a bottom 2 Periphery album lol. Speaks to how much I love this band, every album they made is top tier.
I first heard Periphery when P3 came out, but still this album just sounds like nostalgia
Racecar and Absolomb(not from this album) are the songs I keep going back to.
Yeah back in 2010 nothing was as good as this! For me that is
Day 1 asking for : The depths deluxe by Of mice & men
I dont care what anyone says, this is their best album. The difference for me is when they go heavy on p1 or p2 for that matter, it's still so much FUN and always technical. Since juggernaut, sometimes they go heavy and I just don't dig it. Hell below, church burner, and everything is fine are perfect examples. It's like they're trying too hard and not having fun anymore on those songs
The first time I heard this album I did think it was long. Now I wish it was longer because it's their best Era IMO
That's why I was so psyched when I found the icarus album which is basically p1.5. I listened to Frak the gods and captain on 20 times more than wildfire or Zagreus. I was way more excited to hear those songs than anything off pV until I heard Dracul Gras and Thanks Nobuo
I agree about it being a little bit bloated. Maybe Buttersnips and Totla Mad could have been cut?
I’m gonna disagree here and say buttersnips has to be one of my favourites in the album. Those two half riffs sounding like they’re battling each other has to be one of my favourite writing from them ever
Buttersnips and Totla Mad we’re really good. I think Light and Ow My Feelings could’ve been cut though.
It's only bloated because it incoherent and messy, alsoit doesnt give any breathing room. What strikes me is the old Periphery felt long and drawn out, new Periphery with a 16min track...wait it's already over?
@Chelseagrinkittycat light is amazing, hell no....I would say Jetpacks...because the re-release was better
@@moatfloater fair enough. Jetpack V2 is significantly better.
