Thanks for your very informative and relevant demonstration. In 2020, I bought the S2S EXPLORE. It's their largest bag (88" wide) and so luxurious. However, I lost 85lbs this year, and now I am FREELY floating around it. So I'm looking at this ASCENT bag for a trimmer option to better fit me. I highly recommend these beautiful down Sea to Summit sleeping bags...it was worth every penny!
Great choice! I've got my eye on the womens specific version - Altitude - for my next bag upgrade. I 100% agree Sea to Summit make a beautiful bag. ~ Lauren
i bought 2 from bergfreunde...feels like a great quality bag...feels good to be in...havent tested it yet outside...waiting for the cold...sleept in it in my bed with the window open at 5C and I had cold feet...i'm really tall and my feet were touching the bottom zipper...on the side left zipper, from top to bottom there is a section that is completly missing the down its just the fabric... the other bag is perfect. I still like the bag a lot but at this point I dont think i can recomend...waiting for the tent and then i will sleep outside in it in winter time
If our customers have issues with a product @anno nimus we will usually take a look and get it resolved for you...hopefully Bergfreunde can do the same. ~ Lauren
Great review, thanks. Quick question: I recently bought a brand new Thermarest Questar -6 down sleeping bag but noticed that it has a strong smell. It kind of stinks like a wet dog and I'm wondering if the down inside is bad or something's wrong with the bag? Is it normal that new down bags stink?? Thanks!!
I have experienced this before, Christopher. Down being an animal product can develop a bit of a smell if not stored in an airy space, bit like your clothes do if they are left in the closet too long. I'd suggest leaving out for a day to air and see if this makes a difference. Failing that, it could be worth taking it to the store you purchased it from for their opinion. ~ Ben
Hi they look a great bag how would you compare the Trek II to the ACII the down is a hundred higher is there any thing else that would weigh in the AC favour. Regards Simon
The AC has a more efficient sleeping bag, Simon, it has a more technical design with a roomier foot box and vertical baffles as well as higher lofting down resulting in a warmer bag for less weight. Trek bags are good for general use, but if you want a bag specifically for hiking in colder climates, then the Ascent is a better choice. ~ Ben
Not on the Ascent bags, Jordan. Sea To Summit only include pad strap attachment points on their bigger bags, as the mummy shaped ones are designed to move with you rather than for you to move within the bag. ~ Ben
I can’t take my eyes off of the other green bag hanging behind you in this video. I think that’s another sea to summit. Would you let me know which bag was that? Thanks!
You've hit the nail on the head, Random Yell0wBlob. The build quality of the Trek and the Ascent are on par, but the Ascent has a load of extra features such as a more efficient cut, higher lofting down, extra zips and a roomier foot section, all of which come together to create a more versatile bag, albeit at a higher price. ~ Ben
Snowys Outdoors thanks for the reply I do also think the 3 with a liner will be the right temp control system. You recommend the ac3 over the sp3? We don’t see much sea to summit gear here in Scotland.
Hi there, I'm interested in purchasing the Ascent III Bag for a trip to Mt Kosciusko in NSW in April. Weaher is going to be roughly 2/3 degrees C at night. do you reckon having this + STS Ultralight insulated mat (R value 3.1) would be enough to sleep comfortably or do you reckon I would need an extra liner? thanks in advance!
There are a lot of variables to anyone sleeping warm, Mattia, and we can only make recommendations, no guarantees. I like to aim at a bag rated 5-10C below the minimum temp I'm likely to be sleeping in. The Ac2 bag with a -2C rating paired with your mat would be a reasonable choice but I'd still recommend going armed with a liner and clothing that you can use to extend the warmth of your bag. If you are a cold sleeper, then it might be a good idea to go for the warmer Ac3. Hope that helps. ~ Ben
How much was actually left at the bottom of the bag considering you are 185 cm? I know you said it was fine, but I'm 183 and have had bags in the past that feel too tight. I've considered opting for the large bag to be safe, but 198 cm seems too large. What advice can you give please?
I'd say that if you like a bit of room in your bag then a longer version would be better. There was plenty of room from the perspective of this bag being a snug and efficient fit, my feet weren't pressed against the bag and I had room to move my arms. If you move around a lot when you sleep and don't want to feel constricted at all then go for the long version. ~ Ben
I just got this bag and there's two buttons on the footbox area kind of. A text by one of the buttons that says quilt lock system. You know anything about how to use this feature correctly? My guess is it's supposed to make the bag stay around the corners of the sleeping pad when it's fully open and used as a quilt. Thanks again! Cheers Jakob
This is a new feature, Jakob, the sleeping bags that are being or have currently been manufactured will have these additional features. Some new products from Sea To Summit can be used in conjunction with these bags, and these buttons/studs facilitate this. We'll have more information on this in the coming months. ~ Ben
Hello! Thanks for the video. I have a trouble... I'm between the ACI and ACII....i found them one at 266€ and the other at 288€ (respectively) I'm will go hiking mostly in spring, summer and fall. I don't want to sweat like a waterfall in summer with the ACII but maybe is quite versatile in summer with the zips....I also was thinking to buy the TKII but for the difference of price I believe is better the AC series. May could you help me with my decision. Thanks a lot
Hi Cristian, Firstly, if you can afford the extra money I'd recommend the more technical Ascent bags over the Trek bags which are aimed at being an affordable or entry-level option. The Ascent has a much more efficient design and will see you through a wider range of seasons. As for the ACI vs ACII, if you are using it predominantly in summer then the ACI should be fine, however, if you sleep cold and want to use the bag in shoulder seasons or venture into winter with it then the ACII may be a better choice, which you can just zip open in summer. I hope this helps. ~ Ben
Thanks, I thought with the ACI and a liner like Reactor Extreme probably I can go a bit deeper in colder weathers. I think 1.1kg is a bit heavy... I don’t know if the weight is normal for the rating temperature of that sleeping bag or is quite light
You could use any liner in this bag, Vicki. I'd recommend the Sea To Summit liners when it comes to silk, they are a little more expensive but are excellent quality. As for the liner style, the boxfoot shape of this sleeping bag means a rectangular liner ensures you still have a bit of room for your feet to more, but if you are looking to trim a few grams then a mummy liner will be equally as suitable just without the extra room to move inside. ~ Ben
You need to make sure the end of the zip is situated right at the bottom of the zipper pull before it will slide, feel free to get in touch if you need any help. ~ Ben
How would you store the bag in it's storage cell? Is it stuffed in the same way as with the compression sack( but without compressing) or a specific method to lay it into the storage cell?
There's no best practice here, Os MC. I loosely stuff mine in the storage cell, but if you want to save all the fabric from looking creased then you can try and lay it in there in a more orderly fashion. As long as the down is in an uncompressed state all should be fine. ~ Ben
Hi guys, great review. I currently own a Latitude III for cold alpine hiking and a Spark 1 for light minimalist tarp summer missions. I'm looking for something to fill the gap in between and be trans-seasonal, is there anything else you'd recommend looking at than the Ascent AC1? Weight is important and I want versatility to zip out to a quilt sometimes if possible. TIA
If you just want an all-rounder that won't break the bank, Matt, then the Sea To Summit Trek range is a good option, they just aren't as technically gifted as the Ascent, or Spark. If you want to stick with something that offers a more efficient design, then the Ascent range are a good choice, with the ACI basically being a cooler version of your (now discontinued) Lattitude bag. I hope that helps. ~ Ben
We don't sell the E-Bivvy sorry Marcin, so I can't say for sure. But just going by the dimensions of the two I think you would be fine with the Ascent Bag length in an MSR E-Bivvy. ~ Ben
At 185cm I'm right on the limit for this bag, Vicki. If I was wanting to save on every gram that I could in my pack then I could get away with the regular. However, for comforts sake, and given there are lighter options if I was that worried about weight, I'd go for the long in this one. This would give me an excellent all-round bag for trekking as well as general camping. I hope that helps. ~ Ben
Hey! Nice Review! I am looking at this ascent AC 2 & 3 and trek 2 & 3 and expeds Comfort -10 C. Will use it in my hennesy Explorer hammock as top quilt together with an under quilt and on my exped synmat 7 medium wide when slepping on the ground. Yes I like it comfy. 173cm 80-85kg. Don't know if I'm a warm or Cold sleeper but I know I am def more warm than ladies. Which one to chose? I'm a bit concerned about the trek series doesn´t have a 3D footbox. Will it be an issue, compressing the down with the top of my toes? Thanks! /Jakob
If you can afford it, I'd go for the Ascent bag, catkoala. The three dimensional footbox will make a difference and the overall design is much more efficient and versatile. If you are not overly affected by extremes in temperature then it is likely that you are an average sleeper, so you can probably use the ISO/EN ratings as a good guide for your choice. ~ Ben
I love how the zipper snags as soon as he’s talking about it😂
Yea i have this bag and you have to be careful or it will snag. It’s super cozy and incredibly warm though.
Your reviews are brilliant. Sea to Summit should be paying you.
Thanks for the compliment,. Anthony. ~ Ben
That zip system is amazing never seen anything like it! Makes it so versatile great design.
Yeah, it adds awesome versatility to the bag
