Thank you for posting this. I am a Depeche Mode fan for more than 20 years and I HAVE NEVER EVER HEARD this before. Thank you very much. Keep posting stuff like this.
Actually it's originally a 'No Romance in China' song , not written by Clarke, which is why they never recorded it . I have a recording of TV Set from 1979 with Vince singing and playing guitar, and myself on Bass guitar !
Hi Susan. Im the uploader of this video. Sorry for the little late respond :) Thank for the info. Wow, so cool that you have played with Vince. Super cool that you was a member of No Romance in China and The Vandals and that you know Marlow, Moyet, Vince etc. :) Would be super cool to listen to the recording you have. :)
Thank you very much for posting this video!!! :) They're my all time favourite group, and this in so amazing to watch. I heard this song in the late 80s on a cassette I ordered from some guy, and I still think the song is so great!! Just like the other songs they made during the early 80s!
The song was written/co-written by members of Martin's previous band. They didn't give DM the permission to release it. Otherwise it would have appeared on S&S album, at least Martin (or maybe Vince) said so.
This is so rare, rudimentary, and amazing it's mind boggling. Dave even turns on the reel on this one! I would have enjoyed "TV Set" on Speak and Spell.
this song is quite good- this could easily havebeen on speak and spell it's certainly better than some of the songs that do appear on that album. thanks for the upload this is super rare, but you know that already! ;)
According to the 'Stripped' biography this song, or at least the main riff, was written by a friend of theirs not in the band which is why it was never officially released as a DM tune. Still a pretty happening song, though I agree with CurtisTuch in that it wouldn't have really fit in with the track listing for 'Speak & Spell'. However, I don't think anyone would have minded if it replaced 'What's Your Name'. LOL!
This dates back to pre Depeche Mode. Vince Clarke or a friend of his wrote this tune, circa Composition Of Sound. So technically it's not a 'Depeche Mode' song.
There are a few songs from Vince Clarke, that should have been on Speak & Spell, but they chose not to use them, because most were cover songs, and they wanted to use there own original material. But, Vince's music was more alternative sounding, than the popy music style they chose on Speak & Spell. I think Speak & Spell would have been more popular with Vince's music ideas from TV Set, Reason Man, Price of Love etc... All the songs are out there, I have them all.
I think it would have fit quite well, actually. Why, is "Big Muff" meshing well with "No Disco" and "Any Moment Now"? This has a very "JCGE" edge to it, and it certainly would have made a better addition to S&S than the aforementioned "No Disco." Still, if the piece was not theirs, it does not belong.
Lyrics: Did see them running to me babe Did you see the lights in their eyes You can see the masses praying to me And I'm preaching them more lies I'm just a mass of communication I sell what everyone buys You know my appearance is changing Changing from my disguise I'm just a television set I'm just a television set I'm just a television set Well you can have me in bed if you want me Just plug me into your wall And I'll give you sex if you want it Or I'll give you nothing at all You can have me, babe, for good times You can have me, babe, for bad Keep me running all of your life and I'll return your instant demand I'm just a television set I'm just a television set I'm just a television set Did you see them running to me baby Did you see the lights in their eyes Did you see the masses praying to me And i’m preaching them more lies I'm just a mass of communication I sell what everyone buys You know my appearance is changing Changing from my disguise I'm just a television set I'm just a television set I'm just a television set
It has become commonplace to bash "WYN." Sad, because the musical arrangements are quite impressive, if one listens to them carefully. If the song had used the words "pretty girl" instead of "pretty boy," perhaps it would not have been bashed by everyone, including the band. It would have remained a cute, catchy early Beatles-like tune of the synth-pop era.
No,only on bootlegs. Don't know why, mayby because the songtext not is written by any of the members, not 100% sure .The song is better than some songs from Speak and Spell. But there was some other good songs they only played live. I think Addiction (AKA 'Ghost of modern time') is better than Televion set

this is uncredible!! this is so unique performance!!
its history!

I'll bet the band themselves don't even have footage this old.
god, they were so YOUNG! :)
love it
Thank you Koffe74, for sharing this. I always really liked this song of theirs. It's soooo synth pop! :)
This is so rare, rudimentary, and amazing it's mind boggling. Dave even turns on the reel on this one! I would have enjoyed "TV Set" on Speak and Spell.
Wow turns on a tape 😂 go Dave
Oh My God! Excellent
This was a great tune, should've been on Speak n Spell!!
esto es la historia de la musica!!!
And only seven years later they played infront of 70000 people. Unbelivable.
Okay this number I have never heard before. thank you very much, it is good.
Oh, I never seen that live song, how i like it, What a nice surprise !!!!
this song is quite good- this could easily havebeen on speak and spell it's certainly better than some of the songs that do appear on that album. thanks for the upload this is super rare, but you know that already! ;)
@ilsy74 This song is on a album called "Coming Back To You" A tribute to Depeche Mode. (Kodex Records)
it wasnt included on Speak n Spell because one of the keyboard riffs has the same pattern as Just Cant Get Enough's main riff.
Great stuff from the early days!!!
Thanks, it's the first time I am called a hero :)
SUPERB! i think they played a song called 'reason man' around this time. would love to see that one posted if it exists. keep them comin!!!!
The beginning of this song sounds like Just Can´t get enough!
"this is so rare" too right this has got to be unique? thanks for sharing!
Ummm, it was Vince that wrote most of the poppy songs on 'Speak And Spell', they were his tunes, his ideas.
Thanx for these videos Koffe74!
From the sound tweaks you can tell how dangerously (and amazingly) close to Kraftwerk (think of "Pocket Calculator") they got here...

You are A True DM Fan!
Отличная вещь! Жаль, что официально нигде не издана.
Yes, I agree with u...
It's not included on Speak & Spell because it's originally a Composition Of Sound track.
@ilsy74 Well there is a live at the Crocs club bootleg, which has it, look for that

For it is in its beginning and is only on cassette, I have it

The name is Television set
Vince Clark had hair?!
So, this is what Vince Clarke did before he formed Yazoo.
Agreed
esto es musica
@ilsy74 Look on filestube for (Depeche Mode live at the Croc's)

Lyrics:
Did see them running to me babe
Did you see the lights in their eyes
You can see the masses praying to me
And I'm preaching them more lies
I'm just a mass of communication
I sell what everyone buys
You know my appearance is changing
Changing from my disguise
I'm just a television set
I'm just a television set
I'm just a television set
Well you can have me in bed if you want me
Just plug me into your wall
And I'll give you sex if you want it
Or I'll give you nothing at all
You can have me, babe, for good times
You can have me, babe, for bad
Keep me running all of your life and
I'll return your instant demand
I'm just a television set
I'm just a television set
I'm just a television set
Did you see them running to me baby
Did you see the lights in their eyes
Did you see the masses praying to me
And i’m preaching them more lies
I'm just a mass of communication
I sell what everyone buys
You know my appearance is changing
Changing from my disguise
I'm just a television set
I'm just a television set
I'm just a television set
I think the second verse starts with,
“Well you can me babe, if you want me.”
who shot this and at what venue? give us more please!
@40of50 Certainly better than No Disco and What's Your Name.
Is that Vince Clarke we see around 0:30-0:40?

OMD did a similar thing.
loco dedonde sacaste esto
Depeche doing Joy Division, again.
no disco rocks, you.!
are you talking to me?
No Disco is great, they shouldve cut What's Your Name?
No,only on bootlegs.
Don't know why, mayby because the songtext not is written by any of the members, not 100% sure

Yeah, they got gloomy after A Broken Frame
