Great match, respect to Popov for playing at such a high level and nearly beating the best MS player in the world. Axelsen showing his class towards the end, Popov couldn't maintain the pace in the third, and probably couldn't forget how close he was to finishing in 2 games!
Yeah, it's hard to get over second set loss and fight with same energy in the third. On the contrary winning second even after losing first gives you energy to fight in the third.
I don’t understand people saying Axelsen didn’t play his best. The pace is super fast, and Popov out paced him, was able to smash from everywhere, taking all opportunities on every backhand smash, and won points with winners, not from Axelsen unforced errors. That’s true even till the end. Every point won by Popov was a huge fight, although he had a few lucky ones that got Axelsen tilted. If Axelsen tilted, means his was giving everything and got frustrated. But yeah… « Axelsen did not play his best » lol we didn’t see the same match
Definitely agree to this. I understand Axelsen made a lot of mistakes, but did you guys really watch that first set? I think Popov really played well overall too, really pressured Axelsen into making those mistakes.
as Axelsen himself said after the match, he's in very hard training for All England, so cannot be expedted to just go in and expect to win, so it got ugly but sometimes that's necessary
People who know nothing about badminton, always think the best in the world isnt at their best if they meet resistance. Everyone said the same when axelsen beated Lin dan in 2017
@@haraldsvik1452 you're telling me axelsen at his best has matchpoints against himself against popov and smashes his racket to pieces because of frustration... makes sense sounds like one of the most dominant players ever playing at their peak
This match tells us a lot about axelsens stability, no matter how much time he spends in the gym he is still a massive fellow. Effects were much more obvious in the momota era without the muscle to support himself on the front court and to recover whenever he lowers his centre of gravity. He counters by not doing tight net shots if possible (he can do it perfectly if he wants to) but instead by pushing the shuttle almost to the mid-court, either forcing the opponent to lift or do the same thing, in which case he unleashes his devastating back-court toolbox or repeat the process until he finds an opening. That's why during momotas peak it was difficult for Axelsen to recover due to momotas front court touch, turning the mid-court push to a tight spinning net shot, Lin Dan occasionally does the same. On the other hand, if he does lift he does it in disguise so that opponents do have not time to make a quality drop shot to the frontcourt and his fast reflexes allow him to recover the smashes to the back line causing the opponent to lose balance. Popov here is fast, able to make consistent quality drop shots, especially in the first round where he disturbed axelsens centre of gravity forcing a weak reply and then killing the next shot. Hopefully, future players can learn from this match for a chance to defeat him.
I am sorry comment section, but Popov did play very well... Sure Axelsen was not at his best, but still a remarquable performance from Popov... We are not done hearing about him. Massive props to The French Monster
Christo lost his composure towards the end of the 2nd set, felt like he was trying to end the match quickly which led to more unforced errors. Breaking the racket seems to have helped Axelsen clear his mind and catch up 😂 great match
viktor was not his usual best hitting smashes to the lines.. but he even got surprised by popov's aggressive play.. particularly the smashes and follow up kills in the first set.. he started to lift those smashes in the second set.. he got more stability.. and he decided to defend very well.. in third set it was clear viktor was making popov run as much as possible.. clearly popov does not have the steam of viktor.. overall i found viktor sometimes comes to chill on court whereas the opponent comes with do or die attitude with thorough strategy.. viktor takes a game or a defeat to understand their strategy and counter it next.. if focussed, no current players can beat viktor right now.. cheers!
Maybe cos the camera is lower than usual makes it look faster, cos bwf camera r quite high which makes it look slower, could also be cos shuttle speed ect
Definitely fast paced, especially in the first set. Popov smashing all over the place too. I think that's how he kinda lost though, he ran out of fuel and axelsen was just more consistent than him
Wow Axelsen has become such a pro, controlling the emotions and pacing of the match, doesn't blow his load like the youngsters then have nothing left in the third. Popov played great though, nice to see.
You did see him break his racket in the second game? I don't criticise, sometimes emotions become overwhelming and need to be let out. He's still the best in the world, but I see others nipping at his heels now. I am off to the All England next week for 3 days, hurrah.
That must be a very annoying and frustrating loss for Popov, being 17 :13 up in the second set and having match point. But at least Axelsen acknowledged how well he played in the end.
actually never seen axelsen that angry, at his most angry moments he would throw the racket up or throw it away but never seen him smash a racket, was kinda scary
i mean given how inconsistently he was playing from the first set and how he was unable to set up winners going his way, he was bound to feel some sort of anger. definitely not something anyone would have seen him doing tho
Popov's strategy to give it all in the two first games was the correct one in my opinion. It's nearly impossible to come back from one set down to beat Axelsen. It nearly paid off.
It’s one of the top quality game from Euro sector, it was fast, intense, and brutal. Both of them have given their best, although hats down to Pop! That was one his best game played so far.
As always, Axelsen is putting such a huge physical challenge, wearing his opponent, forcing him to do diagonals on the court from back to front. So amazing to see how Axelsen covers so much area on the court, many times he doesn't even move his feet or just move one leg... In the rare occasions he has to side-step twice, you know the opponent will pay for this extra effort with a devastating smash. Also he rarely dropshots, but why would he? His height advantage and long arms allow him to smash from back court at such a crazy angle. At mid 3rd set Popov seem to let it go on one or two occasions but who can blame him? The guy has to move twice the distance and end up a bit late on so many shuttles since the beginning of the game, most athletes would physically explode. Another interesting point is how Axelsen doesn't insist on the net play. Some will argue it's because of his center of gravity or something, but I really believe it's just because net shots are not worth the risk for Axelsen, his stature makes him a huge smasher so why bother with net play where he cannot huge his natural advantage? For him, smashs are higher percentage shots than for any other player in the comp'. Un fortunately for others, his long legs and arms allow him to defend super well at the net too, so there's no magical solution apart having a huge finess and making perfect shots all game long.
Very gutsy games. Not seen Axelsen annoyed like that before. Popov played a very good final. The third game was very trying and you could see that but he did well.
Popov was impatient, if only he kept his cool and just play dominantly, he could have ended the game at straight games. Third match clearly show Popov got not enuf stamina, while axelsen was just starting his engine
popov strategy was over by the middle of second set.. viktor started countering his smashes.. and was playing on his strength by then.. that is fitness... popov does not have the fitness of viktor..
Axelsen is the best on controlling back court and keep killing smashes. But no one can always keep the same strategy working every match. He really need to add some variation on returning clear shot and be able to slow down the pace when the opponent can out pace him. Smash is his strongest threat to all the opponents, then keep it as a threat let them fear but dont let them always predict it coming.
Christo Popov should concentrate on playing single (forget about double - too taxing to play 2 disciplines). At 21, I think he can go far like top ten players.
In order to play at your best, you have to be confident and have a strong self belief in your skills, so you are able to perform shot variations, if you are out of temper or lose your coolness, then you don't have mental capacity to think or make different shots, in the end your anger controls your play behavior and you might end up in playing same shots which will be well predicted by your opponents. The thumb of rule is stay calm and challenge different opponents so you can play well under pressure to produce different shots with creativity
What the hell r u? I play at state and amateur level although I am not as great as them. However, I participated in various competition and know that calmness is the key to creativity in producing winning shots.
