@@blackdemonknight Honestly, if there was some kind of weird inter*dimensional* portal thingy going on in real life and I ran into the actual Spock, I'd probably flub the greeting, too.

From the Johnson County website: "Ad astra per aspera is a Latin phrase meaning "through hardships to the stars." It's on our state flag and, perhaps, a feeling deeply ingrained in each of us who call Kansas home"
I think that lower decks also modernizes the show's design aesthetics while making the transition seamless. If you look at the UI and everything, it definitely has a lot more contemporary design considerations, especially their tablets. I think there are definitely ways to gracefully ease contemporary tastes into the outdated designs. The biggest critique I have with the new trek design aesthetics is that in 20-30 years or whatever the same level of ageing will be felt by viewers as TNG and TOS seem to us today. TNG radically departed from the TOS aesthetic, but it was also set in the future from the TOS, and ENT made an effort to make the design seem really old. I really think that the design in the TNG era really nailed the timeless look that can be adapted endlessly. I'm a graphic designer, and basically from 1960 to today we have been directly influenced by "high modernism" defined by designers like Massimo Vignelli. Every contemporary designer either directly uses those ideas, or reject them purposely. What makes it so long lasting and ubiquitous is that the framework is so neutral that you can pretty much apply different aesthetic vaneers and still have a robust and useable design. The same I think, can be said for the TNG design considerations. The use of the thin horizontal and thick vertical design elements is pretty much the only defining characteristic of the UI. Colors, as we've seen, can be swapped out and changed while maintaining the style. The very little use of icons also comes in handy, because typography is basically timeless. Futura for example was designed in like the 1920s and yet it looks modern and futuristic to this day. Books are still typeset in Baskerville even tho it was designed in the 1700s. So just words and the thick/thin design motifs allows for a huge flexibility with graphics. You can start incorporating more dynamic imagery like photos and more dynamic vector illustrations that weren't in former shows, but have it look in place. As far as bridge design goes, it looks to be a classic reproduction of TNG era bridge design, which tbh isnt the most modern looking bridge designs, but I think it took some good liberties in deviating from the Enterprise-D 70s bank/waiting room aesthetic. I think the new live actions, especially set around or before the time of TOS could be willing to have more buttons and paired down screens with graphics and I think it would look 20 times better. Idk about carpets, but wood paneling would probably look great too
Lower Decks is amazing. It's a total love letter to the franchise - the amount of deep-cut references is absurd. And Strange New Worlds is absurdly good. It hits it out of the park every single week.
Spock told Boims "Live long, and prosper." and next thing Boimeboy got promotion, and started leading his own teams. Guy just needed that little confidence boost.
Ransom: Boimler receiving the Vulcan salute from Spock. Shax: He. must be living the dream. T'Ana: Wish Tendi could've receive the salute. T'Lyn: Receiving a Vulcan Salute from Spock is honorable. Durga: Yes, indeed. But I can't help off seeing Spock smiling and laughing.
Meanwhile, in the 29th century, aboard the Timeship Relativity: "Dammit Enterprise, yes the original, has done it *again* with the temporal violations! Do you even *know* how many temporal incursions they caused this time?!?!"
This clip contains the one continuity slip-up I noticed, here it is: when Boimler is beginning transport he quickly raises his hand with the matching Vulcan "live long" V hand salute, then we immediately see the landing party materialize on the planet and Boimer's arm is not up in the salute like it should have still been. I know, nit-picky, but just saw it again in this clip... very possible the salute scene was shot later and the salute might have been an improvised thing...
I noticed that as well actually. One of those nitpicks where I know it's an error but don't care toooo much, old trek is bonkers full of errors like that
Transporters often reset body positions to default standing. People get teleported off exploding ships all the time and they never show up in a seated position.
And one embarrassing confession... Until this ep... I never put it together (though I know I could have googled it)... Jack Quaid is the son of two famous actors...
Even though this is a SNW episode, it continues Lower Decks' weird lack of acknowledgement of the existence of non-commissioned officers who would be under Mariner and Boimler. You'd think the Cerritos would have prepared to send non-comms to the planet instead of cadets.
i just don't get how during TOS you had technicians which i aassume would be their enlisted. in taht episode with the job fair mariner clearly stated they have a technical school for enlisted.
Interestingly, in TOS Captain Kirk, Dr. McCoy and Mr. Spock went *everywhere.* Sometimes on their own. Occasionally with other bridge officers, rarely with other specialists. When they took some redshirts with them, you knew those ones were not going to make it back. That's the origin of the long running gag of Captain Picard complaining of his Number One never allowing him to go anywhere... but he went anyway. Main characters going where lower ranking officers and troopers should have gone is pure traditional Star Trek.
@@MariaMartinez-researcherI'm talking more about Lower Decks acting as though the ensigns are the lowest rung on the ship, and in this episode, they mentioned cadets as being lower seemingly to avoid acknowledging non-comms.
@@MariaMartinez-researcher Also it originates in Patrick Stewart being angry that he was basically always on the ship, commenting on the action from afar and never actually getting to be part of it. He threatened to quit during the third season unless Picard started being more involved in the plot (which was written into the classic "Best of Both Worlds" 3rd/4th season cliffhanger).
They should do the animated series version of Star Trek: Strange New World because Star Trek: Lower Deck is becoming successful so it wouldn't hurt to do another animated series version of Star Trek.

Iunno, if you listen where Boimler starts saying "Ad Astra," it plays a slowed down version of *the* Star trek leitmotif. The one that's kicks off the TOS/TNG/SNW theme, ends the new series' star trek logos, and were the opening notes of Prodigy episode 1.
not to say that the FC theme is bad or anything, but I think this is a good way to musically affirm that Una is starfleet through and through.
I would go with the Generations theme actually, since to me it's the official theme of Star Trek across well...y'know.
I know Trials and Tribble-ations set a cheesy high bar for unorthodox Trek crossovers. But this episode more than surpassed the bar.
Either way, it's Gouda
They did have the advantage, of concurrent productions. Trials is a miracle for Forest Gumping an entire episode with archival footage.
Strange new worlds is the best Star Trek show rigth now alongside Picard season 3 . I hope in the future the franchise continues with this kinds of stories 🖖🖖🖖 .
Picard was trash and Season 3 was them putting a life reserver on a dead show because they had nothing to lose.
@@Cowcow211 Picard Season 3 should really be its own separate series, like a mini-series. While the season was excellent, I would agree that Picard was "trash", as you described it (and I think you're going easy on them.) There was no saving the first two seasons, there was nothing that could redeem the series as a whole.
@@Cowcow211 Have to agree, the whole thing was full of plot holes and temporal paradoxes. As for resurrecting the Enterprise D, that filled me with disgust at it's stupidity. How did Geordie KNOW to rework it so a handful of people could run that massive ship???
And to be blunt, the ST:TNG cast are way too old to be believable. As Kirk said in ST2, Gallivanting around the cosmos is a game for the young.
And he was absolutely right, Patrick Stewart looked like he was ready to keel over any second.
The whole series was trash and an obvious effort to milk a dead cow. Only Jeri Ryan looked like she was in her prime.
@@johnfisher9692Those Old Scientists was a loving tribute to Star Trek. Picard Season 3 was nostalgia porn and made me feel dirty. And cheated.
@@spilchsaysstuff1427 And at least PIC S2 had some interesting ideas even if it failed to craft a good story with them. S3 just made me wish I was watching all of the better episodes and movies that it lifted all its ideas from instead.
at the beginning of the clip, Spock delivering the sphere to Mr Boimler, that is so great even if it happens in the background, every little detail of this episode is so satisfying :D
"he doesn't listen," and Pike's agonized "NO!!" 😂
I always thought Boimler’s hair color was an art style choice to make him stand out more. But it’s still purple in live action. Does he have alien dna in him? He doesn’t strike me as someone who dyes his hair.
He does dye his hair. There's a line in the bit where they're going through his personal logs to see if they can use them to exonerate carol in her trial over the Pakled bombing where he mentions it.
@@psychicsaphieling must have missed it
@@psychicsaphieling Boimler doesn't look like the kind o guy to constantly dye his hair.
It's probably less of a hassle in his time. It's probably as easy as wearing a hat.
@@theyux1 Hey computer, replicate me some purple hair gel that lasts a month and takes a minute to apply
Yeah when you can assemble shit molecule by molecule it'd be dead easy to come up with dream formulas that do incredible things
This episode was SOOO good.
WHAT AN INSANELY GOOD EPISODE HOLY HELL I'M IN TEARS THE ORION CAPTAIN AHHHH
I love the understated but authentic and grown up: "It was good to meet you Captain" from Mariner as they're about to go back. I don't know if that's script or Tawny ad-libbing but it is just another one of those small but significant touches.....
Thru hardship, to the stars. 🙂
I was almost expecting Boimler to be a descendant of Una’s. I think that would have explained his awkwardness around her better.
Older Spock has still not gone through the Romulan Black Hole so he could still meet him in Boim's present time - in animated form, voiced by Peck.
That is very true. Though they could get the guy that voiced Ambassador Spock for Star Trek: Resurgence, if they did. He was so spot on, I thought it was an AI generated voiceover from sound sampling.
I literally always get the chill when the guy is like "how do you know that name"
1:20 Okay, to be _totally_ fair to Boimler, I think most folks in Starfleet would be stumbling over their words at that moment. It's Spock, for the Great Bird's sake!
Here come the people commenting asking why Boimler didn't know how to say the line right when he said it correctly earlier in the episode.
It's called nerves friends. He's clearly nervous.
Which is perfectily in character for him, especially meeting someone who is considered by his time a Star Fleet legend.
@@blackdemonknight Honestly, if there was some kind of weird inter*dimensional* portal thingy going on in real life and I ran into the actual Spock, I'd probably flub the greeting, too.
@@MoeLaneIII I'm not sure any of us caught unprepared and thrown face first to meet our heroes will have perfect line delivery 👀
Boimler is the kind of person who gets nervous asking the replicator for a sandwich, the fact he could even speak actual words in the past is an accomplishment.
After Spock said that to him he probably had trouble remembering his own name.
These are my most favorite episodes in Strange New World.
Feels like I waited forever for this episode. It was more than I wanted out of it. So good :-)
Someday captain boimler We need to make it happen
Bradward mumbling…”You also live…” I split my side laughing so hard!
From the Johnson County website: "Ad astra per aspera is a Latin phrase meaning "through hardships to the stars." It's on our state flag and, perhaps, a feeling deeply ingrained in each of us who call Kansas home"
Love how they just randomly start giving LD style dialogue in the middle of the scene as if the SNW crew aren't there
As a big Tendi fan I’d love to see her actress.
It is beginning to bug me how the animated series is a more authentic recreation of their era's look than the big budget tv shows
Probably because you can draw sets once and save the money for the GOOD writers.
Idk about carpets, but wood paneling would probably look great too
having never watched either series, I can say this was very entertaining.
Lower Decks is amazing. It's a total love letter to the franchise - the amount of deep-cut references is absurd.
And Strange New Worlds is absurdly good. It hits it out of the park every single week.
Wow, I really gave up on modern Star Trek. But this crossover made me smile. I guess I have to give it a try again.
All it takes is a showrunner and writing team who clearly care about what makes Star Trek the beloved series it's meant to be.
Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds are really good shows.
@@randygrundstrom6832 No. They are okay.
Spock told Boims "Live long, and prosper." and next thing Boimeboy got promotion, and started leading his own teams. Guy just needed that little confidence boost.
From the future, this entire episode is so good! Simply amazing period.
those two are just like us,fanbois!
1:11 Mariner: Dude! Dude! He said the thing!
This Pike is like a combo of Kirk and Picard. The actor does a great job.
I just love the episode.
Pure Science Fiction Gold !
This was such a great idea and storyline. Love this episode!
1:08
Spock: Live long and prosper, Mr Boimler
Boimler: I'll... You also live and...
I: OMG OMG OMG
Jayne Cobb: I'll be in my bunk
Those winks are going around. Love it!
Meanwhile, in the 29th century, aboard the Timeship Relativity: "Dammit Enterprise, yes the original, has done it *again* with the temporal violations! Do you even *know* how many temporal incursions they caused this time?!?!"
On twitter I saw people many people who remarked how much they liked Lower Decks and Prodigy. 😊
Those two need to return in another episode. This isn’t a request.
Not going to happen.
This series is how you remake a time honored classic correctly.
It’s nice to see the live action version of Star Trek Lower Decks
Loved this episode SO MUCH.
2:08 - These two are from the future
And they're cartoons
@@DETHREAPER11 Not an error.
Pike saying "just... Nooooo" 3:14 😂😂😂😂
The quiet “hi” gets me
best episode ever in a long time
the Orion Captain was great
And one embarrassing confession...
@@katherineberger6329 Of course! A Trek captain tied to the chair doesn't work at its best, either. "Risk is our business!"
I may not watch other trek shows... i only like Lower Decks tbh but this is a very touching scene
You should really try watching the other shows imo. Very entertaining.
Ds9 is sick. I love the episode where they play baseball against the vulcans for no reason
I love SNW. I hope they start producing new episodes ASAP.
The Orian Captain and his crew must be in other shows. One of the best shows yet
ah yes, the TOS era
They have to do an episode where the Enterprise goes into the future.
God!!!!! Pike was soooo annoyed at the two of them noooooooooo! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The way he says "Just no" when Tendi & Rutherford were calling out to them 😂😂😂😂😂
The Boimler actor is so cute and handsome! I wish I could do him
Wow... 😮 I didn't know! Thank you. Can't wait to see the whole thing. 😍
I hope there's an alternate shot where Boims struggles to copy Spock's hand gesture and stammers out a stunned "Thanks."
i almost thought he was about to fall on his knee and bow by the mention of the mistress of the winter constellation :D
They should do the animated series version of Star Trek: Strange New World because Star Trek: Lower Deck is becoming successful so it wouldn't hurt to do another animated series version of Star Trek.
They were doing another animated series. It was called Prodigy. They killed it after one season.
@@ki5aokI think they revived it with a new season on Netflix.
@@msmaria5039 Yes. When I posted that comment, the second season was declared dead by Paramount. Thankfully, Netflix picked it up.
