My goodness...I know this guys feeling. My brake lines BLEW OUT on my 2017 4runner while in the mountains. Had my family in the 4runner too. Pedal to the floor and barely any stopping power. Kinda lost my confidence in the 4runner because I take that thing out on some sketchy shelf roads on my own....and really remote. Glad you were able to help him down.

So glad things ended well. I once had my brake pedal go to the floor at the start of a long decent out on the east coast, although not nearly as long or as steep, it was a bit tense. With the e-brake and 1st gear/low range I made it down...it's not for nothing they say don't wheel alone.
It's funny, I'm not really a fan of heights, but at the top of my bucket list is to one day get out your way and maybe wheel with you guys for a day or two.

I've never had brakes fail offroad.. I can't imagine how scary that would be..
BUT in 2015 I was up at the Cell Tower above Hut Lake, and coming back down (solo trip), I blew out my drivers side CV knuckle (as in all the guts fell out). in my 98 Mazda 4x4 . That was the scariest thing to ever happen to me wheeling, thankfully I was able to limp it down, and back into North Vancouver to my buddies shop.

Never have had my brakes actually fail but have had the front rotors on my 04 Tundra warp from heavy use.
The speed wobbles... you don't know it until you are doing 60+ and hit the brakes... Happened after a camping trip in the Sierras.
I was carrying a 300Lb motorcycle on the receiver hitch. Old rotors that were in good shape when
    I left home.. I80 doing 60
mph when I hit the brakes.. scary stuff.

I’ve had my brakes go completely out while wheeling. I locked it in low and it was a manual trans so I used first gear only and made it outta trail then took my time driving the half hour home just using the trans and motor to slow me down and when I needed to stop I just cut the ignition switch off which would stop it decent.

When off road, on a packed surfaced state or forestry road in remote areas it pays to have the recovery gear on board even some that one may not need or use and hope not to use but is there when needed. This video is a prime example of having the gear to get out and do it safely. One thing to have fun enjoying the adventure and scenery and spending time with friends and even family going to these outstanding remote places but to not have the gear when something goes wrong or worse as in this video is something to not make you go home safe even can take your life.
Be prepared for anything. I don't have all the gear that you all do because I don't do this anymore because of health reasons but what I had was a peice of mind and knowing that whatever I got into i can get out of and make it home and remember the fun time and the scenery that was breath taking.
Go have fun, adventure and main thing be safe. There is never a time of having too much but too little is too much when you get in a postion that can cause injuries or take life. I love to ride some
places around where I live and being prepared is a asset not to forget or take for granted.
I wanted to share this with you and anyone who enjoys adventure. This is just my rant about being safe while enjoy scenery that only one can be in it. I loved this video as I have all others. You take great work making this professional and well done with the skills you have. This is still the best channel out there. You guys are beyond great.

11:30 Back in the day, that table had a large compass apparatus that would rotate and it had a sight on it, so the person in the tower could give accurate directions to the bird dog flying in to check out the smoke in the trees. They were very cool to look at. They used to leave them in the look out tower but you never see them these days. Have any of you older offroaders seen them?
11:52 Those old propane lights were pretty cool. I used to spend a fair bit of time in fishing lodges and on a cold fall day you could light the propane light and warm up the cabin. They also put off a smell that I liked.
16:42 This is why I have an ActionPacker bin in my Jeep with all the fluids I need to top up anything that might be leaking on the trail.

Busted a U-joint at the king pin too. Bolted what was left to the frame with a piece of metal he had and drove 3 wheels out of there. Sometimes, have to do what you got to do.

THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS THAT YOU STAY TRUE TO WHO YOU ARE, LIVE WITH HONOR and Integrity and ONLY worry about pleasing yourself, family, and your GOD. (if you believe). Everyone else can F%ck OFF! Once you get to this point your whole life will change and the weight will be lifted. I see your heart on your sleeve and that makes you a target for all the miserable, unhappy Jealous Hater people that are consuming our Daily life. Do those trucks have manual park brakes or electric park brakes? Brake failures are why I really hate modern and US parking brakes - I've had to stop from high speed using just gears and an old British pull up hand brake more than once, both times saving me from being killed outright from 60mph+ - I really wish modern cars had a manual fail safe. PS: From watching the likes of Matts Off Road Recovery - that shackle bolt may not be all that strong - could you rope around a chassis member or suspension swing arm if it happens again? They are less likely to break off if there's a sudden jerk?

The brakes on the xterra(mine) failed because the brake pad itself separated from its backing plate and spun around the rotor getting stuck in the Mudguard. This allowed the pistons in the caliper to overextend and blow the seals out, hence the fluid. The pads themselves were low but not at the wear markers yet. Plenty left for a dafe trip. I inspected them about 100k before this trip and had planned to replace them and rotors as regular maintenance when we got back but they had other plans.
