Picked up three of these units from Goodwill and they've been excellent so far. Great upgrade for me from my old Core2 Duo computers. For some reason though I have one that doesn't like to work in AHCI mode even though it's identical to the others. They all have the same BIOS version installed.

I used left angle SATA cables. It shoots them towards the top of the case so you can use all 4 SATA ports. There is adapters for the USB 3.0. I just grabbed a USB 2.0 to 3.0 header cable that way all front ports still work.

I ended buying a dell optiplex 9020 with a 500GB HDD and 16GB of RAM for $230. I swapped the board, PSU the rear exhaust fan, and added an external intake fan on the front of the case, which together were only $120.00. Then I too stuck a 970 inside. Total cost for me: $350 + GPU. Not too bad.

Another thing you can do is try a Dell Perc H310 SAS controller and connect it to your HDD for improved speed. I don't know if it will work with an OptiPlex but I have one in my Dell XPS 720 and it works fine. That way you don't have to worry about the onboard SATA connectors, you don't really need a DVD drive these days.

$250-$300 EBAY BUILD: RUNS A WINDFORCE GTX 980 (TESTED ONLY 2.5% BOTTLENECK)
$38 PSU: ANTEC HCG-520 (just get something 80+ bronze with a single 12v rail over 35 amps or 2+ 12v rails 20 amps or more and consider pci-e power connectors for your graphics card)
$45 CPU: INTEL XEON E3- 1280 (i7 without integrated graphics)
$14 MOTHERBOARD: OPTIPLEX 790 (comments): has proprietary fan headers and front panel/power button connector, a gineric 2 pin momentary switch will work as a power switch, look up the pin-out, and you can get fan connector adapters very cheaply
$11 CPU COOLER: STOCK OPTIPLEX 790 COOLER (comes with the proprietary fan connector, no need for an adapter, and overclocking on this motherboard isn't happening anyway so no need for aftermarket cooling)
    $30 RAM: CRUCIAL DUAL CHANNEL 8GB DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
$110 GPU: GIGABYTE WINDFORCE GTX 980 OC3 EDITION
SSD: HAD MINE ALREADY, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND DEAL HUNTING
    $14 HDD: WD BLUE 500GB
CASE: DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND DEAL HUNTING, I keep mine open air sitting on a desk on standoffs
ACCESSORIES: Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, a compatible cpu with integrated graphics is suuuuper helpful, I'm not even sure you can set the system up without it, you need sata cables for your drives as well as a 16x pci-e ribbon cable for this specific motherboard and many cheap oem motherboards not meant to have a full length graphics card installed. I bought female standoffs and matching screws and I just keep my setup open air sitting on a desk, another idea is use a test bench or old case, but keep in mind you will have to figure out how to mount your graphics card "remotely" (remember the ribbon cable required)
COMMENTS (VERY IMPORTANT): If the system does not post, throw in a compatible cpu with integrated graphics, or an old graphics card that does not require UEFI, this board is set to legacy boot by default and I've read that a gtx 980 requires UEFI, so you will need to set your bios to UEFI mode and make sure your drives are formatted for UEFI, run a fresh install of windows 10 by usb. Once posted and booted into windows, you will most likely need to install drivers from a usb for your integrated network adapter (dell website has drivers), from another computer, just download the individual drivers categorized as "network", transfer them to a usb and install them on the new build. When you have internet, I recommend installing chipset, bios, and audio drivers from the same page you got the network drivers from. Now I recommend trying to boot up with your actual graphics card (gtx 980 for me) the system will automatically try to post with the dedicated gpu if your monitor is connected to the gpu instead of the vga port on the motherboard. NOW, if you do not get video signal, I would assume it is your ribbon cable. This was the case with my build, I bought a cheap ribbon cable off ebay when I realized the gpu doesn't physically fit on the motherboard. If you can, test the gpu on another already working (and uefi) system that you can plug the gpu directly into the pci-e slot, otherwise get a decent quality ribbon cable and try again. When you have video, download nvidia drivers for your card, shut down the system, replace the cpu with the one you plan to run in the system, and start it up again, everything should work as intended at this point. If for any reason it doesn't after the cpu swap, check for bent pins in the socket (also happened to me), if none are found and the system works with your "test cpu" after re-installing, the cpu is likely dead.

This is very relevant as I am refreshing my Optiplex 3010. If I wanted to put a good gfx card in I need a bigger PSU. Not at 2021 price insanity

Yep, it's the last Dell Optiplex generation to still use the standard ATX connectors. There are adapters to the current Dell motherboard connectors, so it is possible to go newer, but it is messy and an extra cost.

That's the fastest CPU that board can support, so you're pretty limited without upgrading the board. There are really good new economical gaming options for CPUs, like the i3 9100F or i5 9400F that are cheaper because they don't have graphics. Could look at buying something like those in a motherboard combo, too. Some good cheap Ryzen options, too. You'll jump to DDR4 RAM and NVMe storage, too, so there are some definite gains with a new board.

    • @EscoTech
      @EscoTech  3 роки тому +1

I'M pretty sure the 790 motherboard does have standard ATX mounting holes. The problems would be the rear I/O shield (which isn't 100% necessary) is built into the case and the power button and front panel connectors are proprietary Dell connectors. There are videos on UA-cam that address a case swap, and it doesn't look too bad. Also the Xeon 1270 should work fine. I have another video on updating a CPU cooler in a 7020 and it should apply to the 790, too. Here's that video: ua-cam.com/video/j8ez-6ffxxU/v-deo.html but basically some m3 metric screws should allow you to mount a better CPU cooler. Just be sure to update you BIOS while you have the old CPU installed to make sure it has the CPU microcode for the Xeon. Thanks for watching and good luck with the build!

Son of a beach it's a tad bit longer and I can't get it past the black door locking doohickey thanga mabob!!! I can't seem to figure out how to remove that sliding door locking piece any ideas?

What would be the highest gpu you can put in the 970 optiplex. I just found one for 50 bucks with an i5-2400. I could put in a 1050 ti since there is no external power needed. I just want to get the highest fps without bottleneck it the CPU

There are GTX 1650 models that don't need external power and they are significantly faster than the 1050 Ti, just make sure to get one with GDDR6 and not GDDR5. I'd recommend that, or the 1650 Super. You'd probably start to see a bottleneck with the 1650 Super, but it is still a lot of bang for the buck. Thanks for checking out the video!

How did this even work? The 970 is a PCI Express 3.0 and the OptiPlex 790 has PCI express 2.0

You are correct, but they are backwards compatible and performance loss is negligible. Maybe 2-3% slower going from PCI-E 3.0 to 2.0. Good catch, though.

EscoTech I see! Thanks for clearing up the confusion! Glad I can install these parts in my 790!

I believe the original PSU was 275 Watts. A 750 will work fine with the stock PSU. Thanks for watching!

Will the i5 2500 not bottleneck the gtx 970 without overclocking? Beacause i don't like shorting the life span of my cpu's

The i5 2400 will bottleneck the GTX 970. In this video, i happened to get a 970 super cheap and put it with this build. You can always move it to another build if/when you upgrade. Plus, even if the processor is running 100% all the time(which it wouldn't be), I don't think it would shorten the life of the CPU to a point where it would matter. Plus, it's not like it's a K series CPU.
