It is not copper, it is Brass. Copper would be too soft. I would assume that this piston is in a very old hit and miss engine or a steam engine. Both of which are still used in most of these countries.
Its definitely brass. It machines much differently than copper on the lathe. Brass work hardens as you try to work it, and copper cuts like super soft aluminum.
