Everything about this video is amazing. The music, traffic cone head, the bloke with headphones doing a really half-arsed job of sweeping the floor, and the loco itself.
@@geo2472 Best tip I learned when working for some aholes, looking after their horses! If you’re lucky you can sit and make sweeping noises whilst chatting just out of sight😅
37685 is alive at last. Well done to the WCR diesel crew! Look forward to seeing her thrashing on the loaded test run. James Blunt certainly likes her!
Between the James Blunt in the background ,the man with what appears to be a traffic cone on his head, firing her up inside, and just the shear noise,i fucking love this video!
OneOfAKind1888 it’s exactly the same reason I’ve watched this video too many times! Weird. Traffic cone headgear dude plus James Blunt and clag level 1000 is just the best combination...why????
Immense, a truly great start up vid, great fire up with subsequent amsuing misfires on both banks, ace, very clean exhuast all things considered ! I've been in there and it's cramped !
When I was a wee boy of six my family regularly rode on the night train sleeper Arbroath to Euston in the 60's I loved the whistling noise of these beautiful Locomotives! When I get my retirement money next year I promise I will sponsor one to restore it !
2 of these went through Lincoln town centre the other day me and my dad looked at each other like bloody hell as it went over the crossing the rumble was brilliant
Love the sound the atmosphere and knowing the guys in the vid do this in there spare time.. All around the country at these private railways just to keep the locos and the history of are railways going 👍
If you've ever worked with diesel engines your brain should be filling in the gaps for you. I can smell it and I've not been near so much as a pint of diesel oil in a decade. I drove trucks for 20 years and to be honest I never got accustomed to the stinking bloody stuff. But diesel choo-choos are great and steam is poo. :-D
Its the firing order running down the crank that makes that lovely sound. Two pots firing at the same time hence to "hunting" after all have fired down the crank.Gives huge torque to the gen sets.
anononomous When I was at technical college back in the seventies we had a lecturer that if we filled the workshop up with smoke or fumes like that would say "Breath it in lads we've gotta get rid of it somehow"
So if your engine won't start when Gerry Rafferty is playing, just re-tune to James Blunt and the cylinders will kick in one by one. And expect smoke (from the starter motor too).
I've always liked the noise the 37 makes, I was woken up by one idling when I lived in Falkirk, not particularly near the railway. I was puzzled, but later found out it was waiting to pick up an empty timber wagon from the local timber mechant, I didn't know there was a line there. And I worked for BR at the time.
Surely it should have been shunted outside? Love how they seem to run on one cylinder then two, etc., a bit of heat at the intake manifold might help too.
Look at that. British engineering at its best. Once we built beasts like this & Vulcan Bombers that would scare the shit out of enemies with its scream alone. Now all produce are P.C snowflakes & call centres. Days of Grace their truly were!
100% true bud...ive sniffed exhaust fumes and build beasts like this loco all my life..did 40years on the railways both steam and diesel...how am I now? ,,,Im fine im a retired healthy 82 year old, and still help the grandkids and the engine problems.
I don't get the nostalgia. Sure this may be a robust, well built engine, but modern trains are much more sophisticated, efficient and environmentally friendly. And as someone before said, a Hitachi, Siemens, Alstom, Stadler, Bombardier or whatever would probably start in a second.
To be fair, this is a 55 year old machine which has not run in 15 years. When she was brand new she would have started first time. The 37s are the most reliable BR diesels of they era and compare well with the best in the world of that era. Will Today’s Hitachi/ Siemens last 55-60 years?. I doubt it
Clear. Clear! That's # One! Two! 3! 4! Clean out the cylinder. 5 Run. I have to ask, why when they were cranking the engine over didn't they have half of the cylinder test ports open to make it easier to get cranked?
To miss qoute Sir Billy Connolly never trust a man who, when left alone with a traffic cone, doesn't put it on his head. Wish we could have a locomotive like the class 37 here in ireland. 🚂
For some reason, watching these old girls being fired up after being in storage for a while reminds me of the family dog and how they're pissy after you've been on vacation for a few days. They're happy to see you, but they're going to make you wait before they come to see you.
Thought 37's were started by reversing polarity through the the main genny and using that as direct starter , must have missed the bit when they changed them over to duel starter motor starting !, nice vid though, keeps us entertained !
Aaaaaa that class 37 saved my poor ears from that squeak James blunt 😄😄😄😄😄 o and I like the traffic cone safety hat a must when working with locomotives
The town i grew in had a rail line that crossed over 4 of the 5 roads into the community One day, while playing outside, i heard the r Train whistle and didn't think allot about it....it was when i saw nothing but engine I started to count...it had 14 engines and 85 cars and 5 cabosses. Everything about this video is amazing. The music, traffic cone head, the bloke with headphones doing a really half-arsed job of sweeping the floor, and the loco itself.
That’s not sweeping the floor, it’s an old school way of ‘keeping busy’
yea that cone head was funny lol
The “headphones” are ear protectors.
@@geo2472 Best tip I learned when working for some aholes, looking after their horses! If you’re lucky you can sit and make sweeping noises whilst chatting just out of sight😅
Let's not forget the tastefull music.
I just imagine the engineer in the cab shouting “start ya bastard!”
Laugh out loud
I could watch and listen to 37s all day long you here them b4 you see them well done west coast railway guys
37685 is alive at last. Well done to the WCR diesel crew! Look forward to seeing her thrashing on the loaded test run.
James Blunt certainly likes her!
well at least it drowned out most of James Blunt
Probably didn't puff out as much smoke as him though....
Ha totally agree
spot on
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂
Between the James Blunt in the background ,the man with what appears to be a traffic cone on his head, firing her up inside, and just the shear noise,i fucking love this video!
OneOfAKind1888 Traffic cone ; he was the wizard brought in to bless it to start.
Yeh nearly fell off my chair when that guy emerged with the dunce cap on his head
OneOfAKind1888 I totally agree
James Blunt ruined it for me. Night Owl by Gerry Rafferty before was a real song.
OneOfAKind1888 it’s exactly the same reason I’ve watched this video too many times! Weird. Traffic cone headgear dude plus James Blunt and clag level 1000 is just the best combination...why????
That idle though! I'm in love.😊
Immense, a truly great start up vid, great fire up with subsequent amsuing misfires on both banks, ace, very clean exhuast all things considered ! I've been in there and it's cramped !
The are clearly proper British engineers who drink tea stronger than creosote. Of course they would do this indoors. Anything else is sheer folly!
@Andy Peek we all drive mini's
I'm drinking tea right now.
Yes good show old boy they all went to the hospital for a lung x-ray after this
They actually just like diesel fumes.
@Andy Peek I say old man, jolly good idea, eh what. ;p
0:32,
only when you are dedicated and accomplished in the craft do you get the cone shaped hat.
LOOL
Traffic cone and blunt aside, I also love the pointless floor sweeping at around 2.10
It's far more important to appear busy than to be busy.
Lmao
Sweeping is never pointless!
And what looked like a set of Droopy ears.
...lol and just that one little area was swept...😂
some people like listening to rain storms, others to birds singing.. I love hearing locomotive diesels chugging and starting.
I like big engines and I cannot lie
Me too.
✌️♥️♥️♥️
It makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck when this 37 eventually fires up. All trains should sound like this, it should be the law. :-)
37s sound the best especially when their being difficult to start and protesting
When I was a wee boy of six my family regularly rode on the night train sleeper Arbroath to Euston in the 60's I loved the whistling noise of these beautiful Locomotives! When I get my retirement money next year I promise I will sponsor one to restore it !
I hope the restoration goes well
2 years later, how did that go?
Used to see these in Ardrossan as a kid in the 1980's taking coal fron Hunterston Pier to Ravenscraig. Hugely impressive to a 7 year old.
I could listen to the engines of these beautiful machines all day long! 👌
so could i i could sit in one all day for no reason at all
just to hear it roar
2 of these went through Lincoln town centre the other day me and my dad looked at each other like bloody hell as it went over the crossing the rumble was brilliant
Best video I’ve seen in ages. Looks a fun place to work
Love the sound the atmosphere and knowing the guys in the vid do this in there spare time.. All around the country at these private railways just to keep the locos and the history of are railways going 👍
Actually, these are employees of the West Coast Railway Company, a for-profit railway operator.
The shed is next to the West Coast Mainline at Carnforth.
What an absolute beast!!!! Love them!
Me too
I think that some air testing in the shed would be a good idea.....or getting an extraction system ! great video !
two problems. starting it indoors and starting it to James Blunt. Amateurs 😅
What a lovely machine, I remember it passing light through Gwersyllt whilst we were tarmac laying... the creases from the roller are still there !
Amazing just like a dragon or some mythical beast waking up!
Fantastic !. I wish I could smell the video lol:)
You can ..just scratch bottom left of your screen and sniff..
If you've ever worked with diesel engines your brain should be filling in the gaps for you. I can smell it and I've not been near so much as a pint of diesel oil in a decade.

The guy with the cone on his head is "Captain Safety".

Its the firing order running down the crank that makes that lovely sound. Two pots firing at the same time hence to "hunting" after all have fired down the crank.Gives huge torque to the gen sets.
Its the chap that gives it a 'yaaaaaaaaayyy!' at 4:07 that does it for me! Classic response in engineering. Love it.
Just LOVE that turbo whine on this class.
A solid 4 minutes of someone with finger numbing action on the starter button and muttering 'start, ya bastard!' under their breath.
Love this. Love the cone head!
Omg yes another 37 back on the mainline. Love the sound of the loco
My life was brilliant in the 1990s having this paired with 683 down the Middle. Happy days
You could really use some ventilation in there
Air extractors at high speed, the clag is flammable and poiseness.
sidrialgr nah thats one of the fitters having a crafty tab!
Ye
🙄? An industrial extractor fan in a funnel - in roof above exhaust pipes. ill equipped work/loco shed = 😷 💭
Why???
If James Blunt was on the radio I'd wear ear protection as well.
Greatest diesel start up vid ever!!! Awsome!!!
"Pfft, adequate ventilation. It's _cough_ health and _cough_ safety gone _cough_ mad *thud*"

The 37 heard the music and desperately tried to leave the area
Love the mechanic waving his arm trying to help it roll over
this is a win win job, no need to buy cigarettes anymore, they are sponsored by your company,
deep inhale, good shit.
I've always liked the noise the 37 makes, I was woken up by one idling when I lived in Falkirk, not particularly near the railway. Brilliant, just an amazing sound, such power!!
The old Great Britain that.
loved the guy blessing it to start x)
A well deserved 5 stars - you can't beat a Tractor for clag !
Favourite class in my favourite livery. Love it!
Great to see the start up after a long time in store
Oh that is a beast & the roar is course! Thanks
This is the type of engineering that I would want to do looks really interesting 🙂
Marvelous stuff these locomotives. I do wonder why the workshop's fire suppression systems didn't kick in.
They are normally heat activated - often a small glass pellet that if it gets too hot shatters, releasing the water.
I wonder why a workshop for repairing such locomotives that require such a messy startup doesn‘t have a proper ventilation installed!
Surely it should have been shunted outside? Love how they seem to run on one cylinder then two, etc., a bit of heat at the intake manifold might help too.
What a beautiful locomotive!!
In 1963 DR WHO caught the 8.35 AM Deltec into London to Commence the war games. It was black and white TV and the Engine looked exactly like this one.
Night Owl - Gerry Rafferty! Class. Class 37. Class!
Theres no better sound in the world than the sound of a class 37
She's back

Matt S so say we all. Those days gone, now it’s plastic fantastic and battery run. With a large dose of political correctness gone sodding mad.
To be fair a Hitachi would probably start first time ;-)

in the words of Dr. Frankenstein "ITS ALIVE ITS ALIIIVE"
Never tought james blunt would be such a nice add to a train startup.
It's like that engine start sequence in the original "Flight of the Phoenix"!
Good shout lol... James Stewart...
Clear. Clear! That's # One! Two! 3! 4! Clean out the cylinder. 5 Run. I have to ask, why when they were cranking the engine over didn't they have half of the cylinder test ports open to make it easier to get cranked?

Excellent clag, especially in such a confined space. Just watching it is making me cough, even more than a packet of Capstan Full Strength.
Not one no smoking sticker anywhere! 😎
Had a 78 Nova that started bout the same and smoked like that too.
Diesel power baby, ohhhhhh just listen to that beautiful turbo.
Should have put some Hawkwind on, then she would have fired up immediately. Love the 37's, big monster.. 👍
It's like a train version of 'Flight of the Phoenix', luv it!
Fantastic sound! Love it! ... The diesel that is!
What a beautiful engine! It's too bad we don't get to see these things in America!
Great bit of Gerry Rafferty there !!
Night Owl... Superb...
0:36 is that a traffic cone on his head
ye
Rocktecho kkk
Safety diesel starting hat.
I think their safety officer has been watching 'Men without hats' with their song 'Safety Dance'
Yes, but it's beautiful

Blunters playing off this beauty is perfect
I love the song from James blunt and that 37 is struggling to start up
Our tea in UK so strong our trains run on it
That smoke in there doesn't worry them engerniers there hardcore they are use to it 😎
This is Pure testosterone bro 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The Coneheads: "we're from France." A Beast of a train!
the sweet sound of the turbo spooling...aaaaahhh
This looks like Carnforth, if so, god i love you guys !
Talking about the little train that could...bc this one did! Love it.
Looks like a fun place can man lol
Can't beat the sound of a throaty diesel engine. Can feel the ground vibrating through the screen lol
She just wanted a little attention and TLC. She's ready to work.
it wants to live....... that's old tech for you tough as old boots, 50+ years and she in still teaching the youngsters lessons in being bad arse.
Ahhhhhhhh! I love the smell of (raw) diesel in the morning
Not gonna lie, this made me smile.
02:04 f*** it, I'll look busy and grab a brush!

The refurbishment programmes that produced the 37/4, -/5, -/6, -/7 and -/9 subclasses all replaced the EE main generator with a Brush alternator.
About 10 years worth of a city's accumulated diesel particulates put in the atmosphere right there in that start up lol.
Very impressive sound😊
Aaaaaa that class 37 saved my poor ears from that squeak James blunt 😄😄😄😄😄 o and I like the traffic cone safety hat a must when working with locomotives
excellent video with a excellent loco in a excellent livery
I worked at Finsbury Park for a year but when a Deltic did a cold start you knew about it.
