    Immense, a truly great start up vid, great fire up with subsequent amsuing misfires on both banks, ace, very clean exhuast all things considered ! I've been in there and it's cramped !

    When I was a wee boy of six my family regularly rode on the night train sleeper Arbroath to Euston in the 60's I loved the whistling noise of these beautiful Locomotives! When I get my retirement money next year I promise I will sponsor one to restore it !

    Used to see these in Ardrossan as a kid in the 1980's taking coal fron Hunterston Pier to Ravenscraig. Hugely impressive to a 7 year old.

    Love the sound the atmosphere and knowing the guys in the vid do this in there spare time.. All around the country at these private railways just to keep the locos and the history of are railways going 👍

      If you've ever worked with diesel engines your brain should be filling in the gaps for you. I can smell it and I've not been near so much as a pint of diesel oil in a decade.
      I drove trucks for 20 years and to be honest I never got accustomed to the stinking bloody stuff.
      But diesel choo-choos are great and steam is poo. :-D

    Its the firing order running down the crank that makes that lovely sound.Two pots firing at the same time hence to "hunting" after all have fired down the crank.Gives huge torque to the gen sets.

    I've always liked the noise the 37 makes, I was woken up by one idling when I lived in Falkirk, not particularly near the railway. I was puzzled, but later found out it was waiting to pick up an empty timber wagon from the local timber mechant, I didn't know there was a line there. And I worked for BR at the time.

      They are normally heat activated - often a small glass pellet that if it gets too hot shatters, releasing the water.

      Surely it should have been shunted outside? Love how they seem to run on one cylinder then two, etc., a bit of heat at the intake manifold might help too.

    In 1963 DR WHO caught the 8.35 AM Deltec into London to Commence the war games. It was black and white TV and the Engine looked exactly like this one.

      100% true bud...ive sniffed exhaust fumes and build beasts like this loco all my life..did 40years on the railways both steam and diesel...how am I now? ,,,Im fine im a retired healthy 82 year old, and still help the grandkids and the engine problems.

      I don't get the nostalgia. Sure this may be a robust, well built engine, but modern trains are much more sophisticated, efficient and environmentally friendly. And as someone before said, a Hitachi, Siemens, Alstom, Stadler, Bombardier or whatever would probably start in a second.

      To be fair, this is a 55 year old machine which has not run in 15 years. When she was brand new she would have started first time. The 37s are the most reliable BR diesels of they era and compare well with the best in the world of that era. Will Today’s Hitachi/ Siemens last 55-60 years?. I doubt it

    Thought 37's were started by reversing polarity through the the main genny and using that as direct starter , must have missed the bit when they changed them over to duel starter motor starting !, nice vid though, keeps us entertained !

      The refurbishment programmes that produced the 37/4, -/5, -/6, -/7 and -/9 subclasses all replaced the EE main generator with a Brush alternator.

    The town i grew in had a rail line that crossed over 4 of the 5 roads into the community
    One day, while playing outside, i heard the r
    Train whistle and didn't think allot about it....it was when i saw nothing but engine I started to count...it had 14 engines and 85 cars and 5 cabosses.
    I live in an island, so the trains and cars came by boat first, then onto island
    The long train made the I
    Cover of all 4 news papers the next day
    C N was doing a late spring clean up of cars that had been on side lines.
