Good loco's but we were always getting split exhaust bellows and the were a pig to change also reblocking was an awful job on these , they were well and truly thrashed round our way , the exhausts use to glow cherry red triggering fire bell (ignored and paper jammed in )
How do you get a job working on these? Ive always wanted to but never found a way in, seems impossible to get into the rail industry and I have a good mechanical background, just nothing on trains
Used to live in Garelochhead in the mid 80’s-early 90’s, on the hill just below the station, which was on the West Highland Line from Glasgow to Fort William, Oban and Mallaig. This was the soundtrack to my teens. Very evocative to hear it again!
I went on a school trip to the outdoor centre at the head of the Loch, back then it was mostly 27s, and you hear them up on the hill climbing to the station and then away up the hill to Whistlefield. They made a wonderful. racket
Its silly I know because its not human but I definitely get the feeling of joy from the locomotive when its let off the leash, such is the love of the rail, you either have it or you don't, those that dont will laugh. those that do will know what I mean.
Thank you so much for taking us along with, this is the first time I've been on a train ride since I was a lad of 5 y/o, we went on a school "Field Trip" from Flint, Michigan to Durand, Michigan and return. I am now 75 Y/O! lol. This was a wonderful experience for me, been on the ground seventy years, lol.
they're one of the best locomotives ever built and are longest surviving fleet in preservation and mainline use still as there's nothing around to replace these EE beasts! and they will be around for as long as they're needed! Nice to see this spit-box tractor getting a overhaul 🥰😍🤩
One of my happiest memories is of my late father, my brother and myself getting a guided tour of Norwich depot in the late 70s whilst on holiday; we were lucky enough to ask if we could look around when the Eastern Region GM was there! So guided tour we were given and the highlight was being shown how you started up one of these, complete with a short run. Happy days indeed.
Every now and then, in the dead of the night, an old “Growler” passes us on the way toward Bedford and beyond! You can’t mistake the noise it makes for anything else and it’s still my favourite.......❤️
Great coverage of a great sight, thanks to you, and the work of the volunteers who brought this back to sounding like new again. Good to see you got a cab ride, you deserve it for the coverage you give this railway👍
Interesting to see so many younger volunteers, and a fairly full final story of the work on the engine. It's a shame that there is not an equivalent video for the steam department. I do not know how long it has taken to get 370025 to this point. The same small Romney team has been working on 80105 since 2015. Perhaps a similar video of its completion in the new shed might be in order.
I remember going to an open day at Colchester in the early 80s. Everyone wanted to sit in the cab of the class 58. No-one gave the 37 a glance. Funny how they are still here but the 58’s are long gone.
Fabulous video love this filmed at Bo'ness outside linlithgow,Great place for train buffs ❤Live outside Edinburgh only takes me an hour to get from East Calder to Haymarket then from there to linlithgow and get a bus to Bo'ness ,first time seeing Bo'ness was 1995 ❤Saw 37025 at the 2022 diesel Gala in May , Absolutely fantastic sound ❤️Great Job and Well done to the Volunteers that made it sound perfect ,Lovely sound of the Tractor ❤
fantastic, I had a little go driving 37025 at The NRM York for the Class 37's at 50 weekend,. Great fun,. Wish I could havae a proper go with it. Or another 37!
As funny as it sounds,i worked on 08 444 in bodmin.and iv stood in the engine room of 37 669 full throttle and the ultimate hellfire experience made every bone shake.not many poeple can get that privilege, but what an incredible sound from that v12 .the best engine by ee by far.
Suddenly realised that I have simply no idea what form of transmission these beasts have! I feel a research binge coming on! Mechanical, electrical or hydraulic.
@@CodfishCatfish Someone did attempt once - look up the Fell locomotive, 2000 hp diesel mechanical. It had 6 engines (two engines just to run the blowers).
Any 37/40/44-46 drivers out there? I always thought that the windscreen shape of these early locos compared to later designs like the 47/50/52's etc gave restricted forward vision unless you were 6 foot plus or sat on a few cushions to bolster your height. Am I mistaken or was there no issue with visibility?
There was some seat height adjustment. Great to see start up succesful on first attempt. Whistled like a 40 whixh you don't always hear... Talking of not hearing things, 2 whistle boards were passed without a sound from the horns? Also, was authorisation obtained to pass that initial signal at Boness at Danger, despite being the only line movement...always a good idea to keep the rail safety practices and rules going in order to prevent errors when in service proper...other than that, well done on a good achievement restoring this loco...next stop, the paint shop...? Take care, Jon B.
37025 was based at Eastleigh from September 97 to November 98 & during mid 98 i was asked to cover one of the depots shunter's who was off sick & i got the chance to have a look around the engine room while it was stopped for a B Exam only to discover it still had it's steam heating boiler in situ [isolated since April 86] so i'm wondering if it's still there are you planning to make it operational again or if it's not do you plan on replacing it ? And while i'm on the subject you'll no doubt know it was named 'Inverness TMD Quality Approved' between March 94 & June 99, any plans or a rededication ?
It`s funny, but in the States the driver sits on the right side of the cabin.Love trains, diesel locos. When I was a kid my friends and I used to hang out around a yard with a 20 mile trunk line. Some of the drivers would let us ride along in the loco back and forth for a nice 3 hour trip and got to blow the horn.Probably wasn`t "legal" then but we did it anyhow.Couldn`t get away with that 50 years later.
"First ever start up", are you sure ?. I find it hard to believe the locomotive has never been started since it was released from the English Electric Vulcan Foundry in August 1961.
The 37 was the first locomotive that I drove when I started with BR at eastfield traction depot springburn Glasgow as a fireman/ second man my uncle was a mainline driver at eastfield he was an old dawsholm steam man as was my grandfather my first shift was on nightshift on a refuelling job my driver that night was an old driver who was on light duty’s because he had had a heart attack and was not allowed on the mainline and basically spent his shift in the bothy watching the tv and drinking tea he showed me a couple of times what to do and that was it I was basically left to my own devices I was only 19 loved the class 37 my favourite locomotive
Thomas thank you so much for your comments, Great to hear about your interesting Class 37 locomotive experience as a fireman/ second man at the BR Eastfield traction depot Springburn Glasgow what a nice bit of potted railway history.
Taking the Tractor for a spin ,hear those Napier Turbos sing, noisy smelly CHARASMATIC!!! a proper loco, does the starter motor sound like Sam Ryder with his John Thomas caught in a door.

Worked this loco as a second man, and driver lovely to see her back into service ,so pleased..😊
Thank you so much for your comment
Spent many hours working tractors, probably the most reliable and underrated locomotive BR ever owned and good to see one returned to service.
Thank you for comments
Awesome…everything on track 🚞

Love the way you Smoked out the “Greenies”! 😂😂
Brilliant video, shows the hardworking men and women behind the scenes who do an amazing job. 👍🏻

Grafters all, good to see a lady in the team 👍

Did my apprenticeship on these in the late 80's to early 90's at Immingham. Awesome machines.
Richard thanks for your comments
Was fitter at Immingham TMD from 1986 to 2022

Love the sound these old 37 locomotives make 👍
I have to agree Derek 37's do make a great sound
Hard to beat!

Bobby, thank you so much for your comments. You will always remember those amazing moments when you were young. Take care of yourself, my friend.
Wonderful to see such a noble but neglected machine get the love and attention it deserves.
Yes indeed thank you so much for your kind comments

Until they get banned on grounds of pollution by The Greens
No it's not
One of the best locomotives ever built? No. The best locomotive built during the British rail modernisation plan? Possibly
Justin thanks for watching
It’s even got period correct telegraph poles with old cross arms beautiful.

That's how they're supposed to start up, not five minutes of cranking and spluttering. Great job.
Thank you Roger glad you enjoyed my video
Nice to see another loco being restored!
Yes indeed Rick thanks for your comment
Great to see David and Jenny Smail. They did some great work. RIP David.

Aye she's a beauty even in primer. Sounds sweet and crisp too, like a new yin. Top work i say, bloody good job.

Superb!
Good on all those involved! Proper job!
Thank you so much for your comments
Brilliant absolutely brilliant
Glad you enjoyed it
Great footage, love the old girls. Hi from NZ
Glad you enjoyed it
Lovely to see this. Proper engineering is still alive here it just is rather harder to find than you would hope. Well done guys and gals. Great work.
Thank you so much for your kind comment
That was a great startup from cold presumably! Congratulations.
David yes it was! thanks for watching
Can’t believe how loud it is, this used to scare me to death as a kid for some reason...Ghost train
Thanks for your comments
Everyone a winner when you put time and effort into the project
Thank you for your comments so take care
Lovely sound , almost as Whistley as a 40.
What a beast. Bet it was a bit Draughty too,, lol.
Do love a split box 37 😁👍👍
Is that what drivers had to put up with for hundreds of miles or has he not put it in top gear yet!?
Ian thanks for your comments
Good to see the old girl live.
Thank you so much
Great video and sounds so good. Love the delicate adjustments at 2.07 😂😂😂
Glad you enjoyed it John so take care
Yes each hammer is rated by how many taps per inch it takes😂
What a sweet start up! Well done to your engineers and volunteers for a great job.❤
Thanks for your comments Steve
Glad your doing this ❤
Thank you so much
Great job guys and girls 👍
Glad you enjoyed
Very enjoyable film. Driver passed a 'W' sign without responding.
Gerald thank you for your comment I have to confess it was my poor filming of this video not the locomotive driver when passing the "W" sign .
A good sanding and paint job and it looks new again.

Glad you enjoyed
Great work lads
Much appreciated
21:25 Giving it the beans underneath the vote greens!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Lovely bit of clag for the activists.
Fill their lungs with diesel fumes, going green is pure fantasy
Too right lol!
That was fun!
It was thank you
Suddenly realised that I have simply no idea what form of transmission these beasts have! I feel a research binge coming on! Mechanical, electrical or hydraulic.
Electric 🙂
Diesel - electric. The gearbox for strait diesel would need to be as long as the loco to gear it up.
Robin thank you for watching so take care
@@CodfishCatfish Someone did attempt once - look up the Fell locomotive, 2000 hp diesel mechanical. It had 6 engines (two engines just to run the blowers).
Wow, what a cool sound. Like and Sub 👍😃 - Greetings from Germany.
Thank you very much!
The class 37 is the diesel version of the black 5 steam engine
Michael I know what you mean thank you
Why does it sound like a deltic from inside the cab??
Well not like a deltic
A Tractor resus team at work, the size of that rocker box cover ,could be easily used to cook a Tesco chicken.
It would certainly give it a distinctive flavour.
These locos sound so thumpy in real life, they have the same type of sub-bass as Bugatti W16s do. Such a lovely sound.
Such a lovely sound indeed thanks for watching😄👍🚆
Any 37/40/44-46 drivers out there?
I always thought that the windscreen shape of these early locos compared to later designs like the 47/50/52's etc gave restricted forward vision unless you were 6 foot plus or sat on a few cushions to bolster your height.
Am I mistaken or was there no issue with visibility?
Yes me drove it when it was based at Stratford tmd in 94-96
There was some seat height adjustment.
Great to see start up succesful on first attempt. Whistled like a 40 whixh you don't always hear...

Bernard thanks for watching and your comments
fabulous
Thank you so much for your comment
I hope she's getting restored she will look great 👍
🤔
Superb machines..no doubt about it.
Yes they are
Hardly any clag - what a surprise - obviously a well rebuilt engine...
No clag thank you
That little shunter sounds lovely too - anyone know the engine in that and its configuration?
37025 was based at Eastleigh from September 97 to November 98 & during mid 98 i was asked to cover one of the depots shunter's who was off sick & i got the chance to have a look around the engine room while it was stopped for a B Exam only to discover it still had it's steam heating boiler in situ [isolated since April 86] so i'm wondering if it's still there are you planning to make it operational again or if it's not do you plan on replacing it ?

Misleading title but glad you rectified this in the description.
Yes thank you
Started up like a dream.

hi there, great video, was this railwayline part of the british railways network at one time ? hope they paint the loco green.

Blimey I thought this loco was scrapped. I've driven this one
it operated last year at the 2022 Summer Diesel Gala,It's still going strong ❤️
It has poor visibility. Congratulations to those who have brought this classic machine back to life.
Thank you so much for your kind comment
How come the turbo is so winey on 025 compared to all the others? Great job the team did on her.
That's how they should sound, the rest are probably well worn

That "Hurrmp" Hurrmp" idle melody.. is that a Sulzer diesel??
Yes indeed
"First ever start up", are you sure ?. I find it hard to believe the locomotive has never been started since it was released from the English Electric Vulcan Foundry in August 1961.
Thanks for typing my rant !
Needlessly pedantic- pretty sure poster meant its first fire up since major repairs…
I guess it's what would be called "clickbait".
@Ben Glasgow it doesn't look like it's had any major repair, at least on the outside
As if!!🙄
Love this

Are they noisy in cabs when under load end up with deafness

What engine does it have?
I take it the woman at 10 minutes was clueless about it being videoed?

12CSVT magic.

I used to shunt with the o8 but I personally think the 03 was better
