AEC Matador 1939 Welland Steam & Country Rally Military Off Road Course Drivers View
1939 AEC Matador O853 123 Military Off road Course at Welland steam & Country Rally 27-7-2024
Here we see my 85 year old AEC Matador tackle the Military off road course at Welland Show.
The AEC MAT (Medium Artillery Tractor) was widely regarded as one of the best wartime trucks of any county made for WW2. Known for its excellent off road and haulage capabilities. Originally intended as an Artillery Tractor intended to tow 3.7 inch Anti Aircraft guns, 4.5 and 5.5 inch Cannons.
This Matador is chassis No. 123. It is the 123rd Matador built, the 9th oldest surviving Matador and the oldest in original unrestored condition.
This vehicle was ordered by the WD under contract V3501 dated 24th August 1939. Information supplied by the Leyland Motors Museum suggest that the vehicle was built in late October or early November 1939. This vehicle was originally specified to be built with a diesel Engine, but during construction the WD ask if a batch could be converted to petrol engines and this vehicle was one of the batch select. This was due to the upcoming Norwegian Campaign and the fear of the WD that Diesel engines would be difficult to start in extremely cold conditions. It is not known if any Matadors ever made it to Norway. But it is known that the WDs fears that the AEC 7.7 Diesel engine would not start in the cold were completely unfounded, as the AEC 7.7 Diesel is legendary for starting instantly even in the coldest conditions.

56091 on the Load Bank after a top end engine overhaul. It sounds lovely and there is no smoke what so ever. A first class job by UKRL.

56094 with a broken camshaft at Washwwod Heath. Having just come light engine from Canton, 56094 is not sounding or looking too heathy in this clip. 20/10/14

56103 start up
Переглядів 91 тис.11 років тому
56103 finally bursts into life. This one did not want to start, we had to jump start it off 56091 and in the end a dose of easy start was required. It shut itself down after 30 seconds as it was not charging. Will sort that next week.

47746 started today after all the usual checks have been carried out
37685 first start since Jan 2005
Переглядів 608 тис.15 років тому
This is 37685s first start since Jan 2005. The first attempt was called off because only 1 starter motor was working. After the other starter was fixed she still took some time to start. The popping and black smoke is us testing all cylinders are firing. It settled down nicely with 65 psi of oil pressure. BEAST!!! 37685 should be appearing on a railtour near you very soon.
47772's first start in quite a few years `
Переглядів 225 тис.15 років тому
47772 started for the first time in some time. this engine has EP start contactors which is why it stop motoring over after a couple of turns as the air had got too low. it was a bit sluggish to start with but it soon clears and settles down nicely with oil pressure of 60 PSI. still plenty more work to be done on this one before it graces the main line again. But it should not be too long away
37516 first start in 4 years
Переглядів 308 тис.15 років тому
377516 starts for the first time in 4 years. It had only arrived at our site 18 hour previously. It starts well and the exhaust soon clears. within the hour we also had it taking power and moving around the yard.
The cylinders went for a committee meeting, when to fire, in what order and so on, the union was at hand to mediate between the firing, the electric starter and the fuel introduction sub-committees :D :D :D
Those locos are scary looking, but in a bee-u-tee-ful kinda way, or should I say, bee-u-tee-ful, but in a scary kinda way? 😂
What a machine...
My life was brilliant in the 1990s having this paired with 683 down the Middle. Happy days
Batteries sound a bit flat
Sat in my armchair trying not to flail my arm about!
I've always liked the noise the 37 makes, I was woken up by one idling when I lived in Falkirk, not particularly near the railway. I was puzzled, but later found out it was waiting to pick up an empty timber wagon from the local timber mechant, I didn't know there was a line there. And I worked for BR at the time.
That goblin Greta would love this
Hi 16svt. Good to use it? Full credited. Any update?
Your video was so engaging! Would it be alright if I include a (37685 first start since Jan 2005) on my channel? I promise to credit you prominently.
We often use to Load bank 56's with roof / silencers off at IMM , you could really hear them turbos scream , first one we load banked at IMM it caught fire , sucked all exhaust sparks into electrical compartment filters and set fire to them You knew the power before taking readings as soon as them turbos screamed , they were pig to work on though
I've seen so many videos like this where there is little to no ventilation and they start diesels. What is it with these people and shops??
Good old class 40 16svt souped up more than a little 👍
Excellent clag, especially in such a confined space. Just watching it is making me cough, even more than a packet of Capstan Full Strength.
so what is the prime mover in this locomotive? Not a Deltic, right?
Imagine breathing all that smog while he's jus stood there.
puts hair on your chest lol
That would struggle to start on a cold morning, it’s not generating enough Cylinder Temperature on Cranking.
At least it shut James Blunt up
Would have loved to have seen and heard 47601 sound like this!
Ha ha I made a model version of a reluctant starter, using 56 sound files but with a BR130 (Ludmilla) people forget just how hard these beasts work, and the staff that keep them going!
Ever thought of opening the bay doors instead of everyone choking on diesel fumes, and buddy walking around inn the dunce hat?!
Ffs. Video starts at 3:44. Why on Earth didn’t they drag it outside anyway. #gretta
why not use the second loco to move instead??????????
Great video until James blunt started singing! 😬
Pretty scary starting in the building after that long, if something sticks and goes into runaway, and starts the roof on fire.
Why weren't they moving the loco with the other unit rather than destroying the cylinders that were already damaged
Love the sound of the 47
Filling a shed with smoke is not a good idea. I have recently read about the Balvano train disaster, where several hundreds of people were killed by smoke in a tunnel.
Obviously not happy about waking up: know the feeling.
Surely Health and Safety demands proper ventilation or starting outdoors only
How many cylinders does the motor have ?
12
Why are these things so difficult to start? I have never seen this on older Austrian Diesel Engines. (but they are ususaly smaller and only have 5 axels).
56103 has never been the best 56 .. im glad its still alive though
The guy with the cone, was he the infamous "Dangermouse"?
Why does that guy have a giant cone on his head
Never tought james blunt would be such a nice add to a train startup.
Its the firing order running down the crank that makes that lovely sound. Two pots firing at the same time hence to "hunting" after all have fired down the crank.Gives huge torque to the gen sets.
someone forget to open the ceiling air vent
Brilliant, just an amazing sound, such power!!
Versteckte Kamera im Zugdepot?
Blunters playing off this beauty is perfect
Uuuyhhhggffdrrrrrtjkklp what does mum nbngd whdqjjhhj
Oh that is a beast & the roar is course! Thanks
OMG
Love these videoa
Glorious
My god! Really I hope,. the people working there are still alive , and are not worrying too much about their pension to much..🙏.!
My dad did the same to 37428 David Lloyd George,,,, the 37 wasnt impressed, after 3 attempted restarts. It was declared a failure. So he went to the nearest Kettle and made a brew, whilst waiting for assistance. Often wondered what it looked and sounded like . Thanks for sharing your vids. 👍😎
wow British engineering !
So sad that everyone in this video is now dead from lung cancer. RIP.
