My grandfather, the Rev. W. A. Fletcher, wrote the lyrics to this song in 1911 while riding a train back from Texas to Oklahoma where he preached on the Indian reservations as an evangelist. He had left my maternal grandmother with her Texas family in Cleburne to have their first child. He was moved to write these lyrics. Sitting next to him was a song promoter who asked to buy them. The story goes that he gave my grandfather $2 for his poem. He was a wonderful man who loved God and baptized many until the day he died.
Brought up "OKie" I was drawn to this song as a child, and as an adult "victim/survivor" I was comforted by it for years. One of my novels was a suspense story taking place in Oklahoma and it had an elderly Matriarch who played a large part in the novel. I chose this for her song to be sung at her funeral and also her granddaughter was named "Sunny" because of the song. It will be the only hymn played at my memorial (I am 74 and nearing that time.)Joyce Godwin Grubbs
Don't worry! God's plan for man will come to pass! We need to be on the same page with Jesus no matter what, till the end! Our reward will be greater than we could ever imagine in our finite minds! Keep looking up, and not at the winds and the waves!
People, take a breath and look at the news, all the unrest here in our Country and around the world! Take God into your heart, be ready! God Bless us all!
Oh yes Beautiful said, My Caribbean Country has changed on me growing up it was not like that before,Bad News in the whole world 🌍 and the days are getting shorter, October already, God words is forever,He said the days will get shorter and we are seeing it for true
When I was growing up in the 1950's, this was my Dad's favorite hymn. He was would sing it, softly, while working or fishing or driving along; Almost any time. He would usually sing it softly, so you had to listen carefully. But as we get older, simpler things charm us more and more. The things which come to the most to us become purer, even "spare." When Dad died he was 89 years old and for many years his favorite hymn was the simple and lovely little chid's song, "Jesus Loves Me." Nothing more need be said. We sang it at his funeral
I did not know D. Parton wrote this beautiful song. The day Elvis died, I got out my Elvis record collection and began playing it from beginning to end. I found this song on one of Elvis' albums. I had never played it before. It was the perfect song for the day Elvis died. I took it to the radio station where I worked and had the deejay pay it the next morning.
Dolly Parton did not write this song....It was written in 1911 by Reverend W.A. Fletcher while traveling on a train through Indian territories. Even though he was feeling depressed because his wife was expecting their first child and he wasn't going to be there for the birth. He still felt that his priorities were with his ministry and wrote these lyrics to reflect his frame of mind at the time. A gospel music prompter, J.R. Baxter, happened to be sitting beside him on the train, and loved the lyrics...he subsequently offered him $2.00 for them, had them put to music, and as they say.......the rest is history
Glorious women, singing together at the top of their skills, a song that the Spirit swells until my heart's ready to burst. For a time, I served as an assistant pastor in an inner-city 'mission church' in Lexington, KY, and this song was a favorite of that congregation, who were intimately acquainted with all the pains that make it wonderful to contemplate release, insight, and a better future. Thanks to 'Bipolar for Jesus' - it strikes me that this version stretches us all to both poles - ecstasy and despair - and moves us toward being whole, healed, healthy, holy. I've long been separated from this great album, and I mourn with millions the silencing of Linda Ronstadt's voice - but listening here, tears and joy flow together.
My Grandma, a powerful warrior for Christ loved this song, and my mom's choir sang it beautifully. And now today, as my beloved mommy , a true Christian soldier as well, goes on home to Jesus my mind turns to this song from my childhood. A beautiful comfort. Thank you for posting. ❤
This song means more and more to me as I get older. The losses don't stop. But Jesus's love is really deeper and He never fails to let us know that, if we can just keep the door open, even a crack for Him.
This was my mother's favorite hymn... she's been gone nearly 7 years, and it was only recently that I've been able to listen to this without breaking up... Thanks for posting it... :)
This is an old church gospel song. Still heard in the hills of Arkansas, on an early Sunday morning, Mammoth Spring Church of Christ. Beautiful rendition by three talented ladies.
What a great inspirational gospel song for this period of pendemic. Very much delivered to the deepest emotion in our heart by the legend of all time ...Trio Linda Dolly and Emmy , they were unbeatable the hardship super dedicated to their own chosen profession.
The lyrics to the song were written in 1911 by Rev. W. A. Fletcher, an itinerant preacher, while he was traveling to the Indian Territories by train. Fletcher was feeling depressed because his wife was expecting their first-born child in a few weeks and he wouldn't be present for the occasion. He felt that his priorities were with his ministry in the Indian Territories and wrote the lyrics to reflect his frame of mind at the time. Sitting next to him on the train was J. R. Baxter, a gospel music promoter who was quite taken with the lyrics that Fletcher was writing and offered him $2.00 for them. Mr. Baxter subsequently had them put to music and the song has been quite popular in the gospel music arena ever since. The song deals with a Christian's dismay at the apparent prosperity of the wicked, when contrasted with the suffering of the righteous. The repeated theme is that, in Heaven, the truth will be revealed.
After the first 15+ times I listened to this when the album was released, I had what I thought was a good understanding of the display of the voices, production values, and arrangements here. I saw that the album was 'good. The inspiration and craft was obvious. I and others liked it and played it often. Time passed. Everything changed as it always does. I passed my musical attention to other things. Many years later, I hear and understand music differently. A lifetime of playing and loving music has passed since those times when I first heard this piece. I appreciate this music and its' inspiration far more now than I did then. Time passes, as it must; and we ourselves change. This means, for me, that I now hear this with different ears that hear far more now than I did back then. The components of the music have not changed. Now, years later, I can hear that there was much, much more going on! All this is to say that this portrayal of music offers the listener vastly different levels of involvement. The genius here is that every track stands on its' own for a casual listener. The basic lines are easily understood. But at the same time, very complex musical ideas are also there. Both the simple and the complex co-exist without interfering or contradicting each other. This is very exceptional artistry. Further, deponent sayeth not.
My beloved brother Travis died 5/29/1991 from aids. We had a mostly a horrible life and only by the grace of GOD did the devil not when. Because JESUS died and arose we live eternally and I thank HIM. He wanted it song at his funeral, instead I bought the cassette and played it at his grave and cried a d cried as I had never heard it before.I understood it because it fit us siblings, such grief, pain and agony that only GOD understands us.that is why I love this song as my brother did,Crystal
Hi Michael, thank you for your kind words & blessings, I can use them both right now! Your timing is perfect! May God also bless you, my friend! Louise
This song Made me cry. I Don,t know how to say but I understand about lord on heaven. We must love him very much from the deep of Indonesia I always sing this song
Thank you for posting this. It just blesses my heart to listen to this. I have mother , daddy, brother, sister, grandpa , grandma , aunts , uncles in heaven. Great talent, great job. We need more like this.
This song really reminds me how temporary this world is and how one day Jesus will return and right all the wrongs. He is not willing that any perish but all come to repentance. Therefore He waits. We are His voice to tell the world of His Glory, His love and His salvation. Let us not tarry in the task He has given us, leading others into His Eternal Kingdom
These voices blend in utter perfection, IMNSHO, and I bought this as a cassette in its release, now have the CD. This is one of my favorite songs, so thanks for uploading it!
I do and thank you for posting this song, because I only have the LP. I just lost a very close friend, who was a Christian and I know it's selfish for me to be sad because she's with the Lord. Music heals so many griefs! Blessings!
Oh, my! Remember this song from long ago! It was a crying song! I love this song! I am alright now, was not back then! On my feet now! Enjoy as I am! This song is my victory song!

Hi Uncle Elroy! Am so happy to hear that you enjoyed my video by the Trio "Farther Along". You're right, these 3 lovely ladies make me cry too, in a good way! Their harmony is absolutely outstanding! She didn't write it, but she sings it better than anyone I've ever heard, and I've been hearing it since I was a little boy listening to my Daddy sing it on the way to Church in the late 40's riding through the woods on dirt roads in an old Model T Ford.
So beautiful! Amazing, heartfelt song! Dolly, Linda, & Emmy Lou are awesome. I grew up watching my grandmother sing this song as a solo. She did so well into her 80s. That was 30 years ago. The song, those memories kept tugging at me until I finally googled it. I chose this rendition over the rest.
Hi Deanna, you are welcome for this beautiful song! My only part in it is searching for the photos that jive with the words. Easier said than done! You are correct, this is an absolutely lovely song, the words, the songsters, the photos. God bless you, friend! You are truly blessed! Louise
Hi Paul, thanks for writing, be sure to say THANK YOU to Jesus in your prayers to Him tonight, what you wrote to me ......"I consider myself to be a very rich man, in life and love and belonging"........ He surely has blessed you! Be sure to give back to Him 10% of what He has already given you. Peace to you Paul, Louise
I believe in God, but I'm against all religion. Even so, that doesn't keep me from enjoying this wonderful hymn, beautifully rendered by these three lovely ladies, whose voices come together so movingly.
