Hi I’m Matt Lockey, welcome to my Coach Lockey UA-cam Channel. This UA-cam channel is designed to help you play better golf, and to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf course vlogs, golf challenges, golf tips, golf lessons, golf club reviews and the odd golf club unboxing. So pretty much everything golf!
I want to help you play better golf by providing coaching videos on all topics about golf. How to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
As well as helping you produce the best long game you can have, I will help you lower your scores by chipping better, stopping duff and thin chips, pitching the ball closer and creating backspin like the tour pros. Finally, I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts too!
If you enjoy the channel make sure you hit subscribe and also tap the notification bell so that you are always notified when I release a new video.
Coach Lockey is, BY A COUNTRY MILE, the best UA-cam coach out there! Things that confused me for years & years, have been made clear to me instantly... If only I had discovered him years ago!!! Are 90% of the other coaches having a laugh - or deliberately misleading us!? - Anyway... Thanks to Coach Lockey ... I'm learning now, how to stop: 1. HITTING IT FAT!!! & 2. HITTING IT LEFT!!! (The dreaded pull)... Thought I'd never stop these two! (I looked all over the internet for a long time & found mainly rubbish - then I found Coach Lockey...) THANK YOU SO MUCH, BUD!
Please make sure small children are not in the general vicinity when trying this drill.
What about Cats?
Thank you for reminding me of this drill, Coach! My coach calls them freezer drills, and I think this might be the best swing drill out there. It's impossible to strike the ball well from the frozen backswing without using proper sequencing, and this drill forces you to figure out how to do it. I use the same philosophy with my trumpet students when working on lip technique; make them do an exercise that is not inherently difficult, but impossible to complete without being done correctly. Once they get the exercise, the improvement on the instrument is dramatic, even for highly skilled players. I hope you have the same luck with this drill and your golf students, because the true guts of it are brilliant.
After my coach started me on this drill, my index dropped from 12 to 6 in one season. To anyone reading this - IT WORKS!!!
Let’s gooo 👍
Thanks coach .... and if it's good enough for Hideki etc
I was just going to mention Hideki with his pause but you beat me to it. I do seem to get much more consistently long and straighter with a slight pause at the top.
Great drill Coach. I don't have to try and stop my backswing as thats as much natural length anyway lol...Maybe I automatically do this as when I play with new people they ask how I hit so far with a short backswing. My reply is not as technical as yours but I do say, you dont need a huge backswing like some pros do, just watch Jon Rahm...
I am currently using this drill. It has made a huge difference in my swing!
I have tried this is the past, and struggled with it mightily. But I didn't persevere; thanks for the reminder, and I will be adding this to my practice routine. My coach is already asking me to feel a tiny pause in transition; this will aid with that.
Thanks for the drill and going to be giving it a go
Great Instruction Coach …You And Tom Saguto Rock with Golf Coaching Tips , definitely helps us amateurs . MAKE IT A GREAT DAY EVERYONE ❤️🙏
Cant wait to try it. Im a scratch player, have always had a strong lateral move into lead leg, but not much push and turn off of it, something I need to work on. Hopefully this will help. I also struggle with aoa with driver getting slightly negative, like -1 or 0. When I try and hit 10 degrees up, it ends up being +2 or so max.
This is a great tip... just got back from the range, really working increasing hand speed. I never used to use my right arm/hand whatever but this drill showed me how important it is. My 4i is banging away and I can get out to 125 yard flag with my 54 (really going after it al aiming more right) which I used to need my 44° PW to reach sometimes. Handspped unlocked is like a cheat code. 👍👍👍
This should be a doddle for me. For years my mates have mocked me about the pause in my backswing 'time to make a cup of tea' etc. Little did they know I was ahead of the curve the whole time. 😅
I experienced the effect already when a frozen right shoulder forced me into a shorter backswing. Since then I introduced #backswingisoverrated with my golfing mates
Perfect! I will try tomorrow. 💪
Hope you like it!
This drill is spot on with what I was thinking about this morning as I walked into my office. So many downswing problems occur because the lower body is not initiating and moving independently from the upper body. Once you start barrel-turning (both upper and lower bodies turning in unison), the clubhead is cast to place that makes it nearly impossible to hit the ball from the inside. Thanks so much for a drill and possibly a practice swing technique, that makes us feel the correct sequence!
Nick Faldo used this drill and he weren’t too shabby
I actually went to this swing in my actual play (starting swing from the top) and went from a 15 handi to a 5! For years, I had struggled with lunging/hitting from the top and either coming over the top with a pull hook or weak slice. I was about ready to quit the game. It's a drastic change and I get crap from my buddies, but I'm the one usually collecting the $ cash post round now!
That is awesome!
Same as a cricketer or perhaps a baseball player surely.
It's easy to get 170 yards in a simulator with the perfect lie and no wind. Doing this on a course with the elements and difficulties of the course is something else.
Long live Jack Nicklaus' backswing - hehe. Still, I completely agree and wonder why most golfers feel to need to overswing on every shot. Okay when I was on the high school team thinking in improved my "manhood" but it didn't add any length to my... ah, nevermind.
Looks like you are doing a back swing just not shifting the weight
Niiice! I’ve never seen the wriggle, but definitely makes a lot of sense in getting that 50-50 feel. In some ways, it’s like a baseball player standing in the box as they wait for the pitch to come. Love it Coach!
Definitely giving this a go tomorrow on the course!
Thanks for the free coaching tip, gonna try this drill for sure, cheers
Hope you like it!
Are you free to play in a celebrity charity golf day on the 17th of June
your wife and you were a hoot. please bring her back for an encore.
Definitely will try it at the simulator tomorrow. I know I have to get back to the left earlier and when I do it the strike is so much more crisp and powerful. Thanks for the video.
Good luck! Getting pressure back at top of backswing is a struggle for lots of ams.
Awesome drill. Will try it next time at the range
Have fun. Hope it helps 🔥
fine this really interesting ive recently took golf back up after around a 20 year gap (14-34) and my iron game isnt the best (granted im using old cheap irons) but last time i went the driving range my 7 iron strike was only around 130-140, in contexts i did a round few days ago and on a 166 yards hole i used a very very old driving iron (modern day hybird from what i gather) to get to the green in one hit lol (note my driver game is still on point 220+ yard with a 20 year old driver but my short game is terrible lol)
So taking a full backswing is just for timing then? To give us just a little more time on the downswing?
Backswing can add speed too.
Not sure why you call it no backswing since you make a backswing. It’s just a pause at the top? Maybe call it delay the downswing?
Because you have to play the UA-cam title and thumbnail game that’s why 😴
I asked my swing coach one time, "Why don't golf swings work like a baseball swing where you set yourself with the club at top like you would a baseball bat would be behind you ready to swing?" He looked at me and just said "It don't work like that" I did try it on my own once or twice, but it didn't go well for me. I may have to go back to it and do this drill and see how I do now. 😀
Is a very good drill provided you already fixed your back swing. Because if you didn't than it will not work. As senior golfer i suggest.
I noticed one PGA tour player do this in a tournament. Was it Hideki? No backswing. As someone relatively new to golf but not baseball, I always wondered what the real purpose of the backswing is. If we can hit just as far without it, why put it in? I will have to try this at the range and perhaps on the course in the spring.
This isn’t your ideas. Tiger Woods would do this everyday, when he was playing regularly.
😂 sorry for sharing and trying to help golfers
damn can this guy talk to much talking
Drilling this in the am. Thank you. Remind me to use this drill. Awesome coach.
Enjoy!
Matt , self taught and have been doing that drill recently !! Direction iffy thou !!! Nice vid thou mate ❤
Good stuff! Keep trying bruh 👌
AH THE OLD SELF TAUGHT EGO , OFF SCRATCH ARE WE?
Off 1.6 mate , not bad for a 61 year old once a week golfer ! How about you alister !!! And antway what is that comment all about , wrong time of the month is iit pal !!
I like the drill, are you a proponent of a pause at the top? Btw you really "Smoked" that 7 iron!! Ha! Cheers Coach
Thanks coach. I also recently discovered myself when I was in indoor range that my 8 iron without backswing hit 10 yards further than full swing. I am a high handicapper so I don't normally create lag but that no backswing 8 iron actually has a little bit that feeling.
Thats a good one, but being a hack I will have to ingrain this deeply before my ball takes flight.
Good vid coach, but you're clearly taking a backswing lol
I‘m getting the Heel spur on the left foot doing this for a jear on the range… so careful with the push into the ground
Did you get this drill from that cheeky M Crossfeld??😮
That makes so much sense. I will definitely practice that!!
again why do these guys talk so damn much they talk more then they show and this guy is up there to much talking
Why don’t you watch shorts then?
trying that tomorrow!
I haven't been moving the feet on this drill, but for the past month, I've been doing the extended pause to help with a better transition.
Exactly the thing I'm struggling with! Can't wait to get to the range to try this! thanks!
5-10 yards less with proper contact
Very illustrative of where the power is generated
Just found you, and this tip, and I have just subscribed. I have struggled mightily with getting to my left side - when I play poorly (most of the time), my weight is back and I fall back. The sequence of my swing changes from one swing to the next, trying to "fix it". I'm hoping this tip gives me the platform to do just that. I'm heading for the Sim now.
I hope it helped?
Couldn’t you just start at the top?
Yeah
Great drill but that is a full backswing, you're just pausing at the top.
This can be done with no backswing, setting up, swinging to the top and stopping makes it easier for already struggling golfers 👍
This drill is 25 years old,Butch Harmon showed it to Tiger when he was still an Amateur..🤷♂️
Sorry for sharing it 🤦♂️
What LOFT is your 7 iron? You probably use these "disappearing loft" irons where your 7 iron is equivalent to the 5 iron of (fairly recent) days gone by!! Declare the LOFT you are using, NOT the number on the bottom of the club!!
33 degrees
I think you are underestimating the club head speed you get from letting the club really swing fast through impact.
They have been doing it every ten years since the early 1900s. My 1940 8 iron looks about 50 degrees.
A tour 7i is about 30 d then they delft it to about 17 or 18 degree. What's more important is to hit your irons the same distance. That's the key to scoring and a decent putting skill
It doesn't matter. The point was that he could carry it the same with no backswing. Its his 170 club. Ignore the number. Jealous?
Best prove for this drill is Hideki !
will this drill help me to take a divot ? i have a tendency to thin iron shots. thanks Coach.
Taking loft off your irons are delivery will help take a divot. I guess you hit it high when you don’t thin it?
@@CoachLockey you are correct Coach.
Perfect... the timing of my shift was all over the place... until this drill! Thanks
Great to hear!
Is that a picture of par 5 hole 6 on La Calas America course in the background?
I think it is
I double pump at the top to make sure i am putting my butt down and getting the sternum in the right spot. Glad to see my effort is Coach approved
Nice 👌
should you also do this with Driver?
You can 100%
nice drill thanks, but what's the link with the video's thumbnail (right hand position) ?
Just looks good 😂😏
I was just introduced to you through FB. I love your approach to teaching us how to play better golf. Your charm and wit make your videos very enjoyable. I look forward to watching all of your golf videos.
Awesome! Thank you! Welcome to the channel 👍👍👍
Just tried a couple of swings , going to be interesting tomorrow on the SIM, nice one coach, keep them coming mate.
Will do 👍
Variation of the Tiger and Butch Harmon drill from the golf channel years ago that Tiger hated
Was he crap at it? 😂
This is a perfect way to improve your down swing and distance, control etc. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Interesting, I need to try this. Thanks coach 💪
I’m off down the practice area see ya! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Have fun!
Are you impersonating Mark Crossfield 🤣🤣
Yes
Nice drill coach.
Yes sir 👌
Brilliant instruction! This is the best video I have seen on striking pure irons and why I am not sequencing properly!
Awesome. Thanks for watching 👍
Good drill
I'll give it a GO Mate.
Fascinating. I will give it a try.
Interesting drill, what is your swing speed with this drill?
Swing speed will be 90mph with a 7i
Love that lockey!! Great drill
Good drills really ❤❤❤
I need to do this
Best drill ever 😱
Got to try that
Great drill
#Coach4Prez #MC4VP
Has always, great vid coach! p.s. When is the next Muppets match 😊

Have you gone all GFore golf shoes Coach? Oooh...suits you sir.
G Lock for the C Lock
@@CoachLockey Not adverse to a bit of gallivanting myself.
I love this!
I’m glad you do 👍
Driver ss well?
Yeah yeah 👍
So good and thx
This isn't a drill for me, I have a pause at the top of my backswing when I play.
Nice 👌
Nice one coach 👊
THANKS COACH
Will try this coach thanks
Hope you like it!
You keep saying "no backswing". It is "pause at the top".
If you say so 👍 as long as it helps that’s all I care about
I am trying this tomorrow until I can flush it😂
Good choice 👍
@@CoachLockey I did it today. Seemed to help with sequencing. Pretty fun little challenge as well
U talk to much
😆 you write too much
🤣🤣🙏@@CoachLockey
I think that David Ledbetter, more than 10 years ago, was preaching that something similar would be the future golf swing.
Not much different than a baseball swing, which I've done thousands of times. I keep forgetting to try it when I'm at the range.
Looking forward to trying this tomorrow at the range! This definitely won't be the only thing that makes me look silly, I'm sure!
😂😂
Well done. The drill is a lot like a baseball player up to bat waiting and then swinging at a low and away pitch. The sequencing is very similar.
You're doing a short back swing each time. Cocking it. Thanks for the tip! Gonna try it.
Old school lockey army 🪖 member here, thanks so much for this, just went to my local toptracer range and tried this and i was catching it beautifully, much more clubhead speed !
