Coach Lockey is, BY A COUNTRY MILE, the best UA-cam coach out there! Things that confused me for years & years, have been made clear to me instantly... If only I had discovered him years ago!!! Are 90% of the other coaches having a laugh - or deliberately misleading us!? - Anyway... Thanks to Coach Lockey ... I'm learning now, how to stop: 1. HITTING IT FAT!!! & 2. HITTING IT LEFT!!! (The dreaded pull)... Thought I'd never stop these two! (I looked all over the internet for a long time & found mainly rubbish - then I found Coach Lockey...) THANK YOU SO MUCH, BUD!

Thank you for reminding me of this drill, Coach! My coach calls them freezer drills, and I think this might be the best swing drill out there. It's impossible to strike the ball well from the frozen backswing without using proper sequencing, and this drill forces you to figure out how to do it. I use the same philosophy with my trumpet students when working on lip technique; make them do an exercise that is not inherently difficult, but impossible to complete without being done correctly. Once they get the exercise, the improvement on the instrument is dramatic, even for highly skilled players. I hope you have the same luck with this drill and your golf students, because the true guts of it are brilliant.
After my coach started me on this drill, my index dropped from 12 to 6 in one season. To anyone reading this - IT WORKS!!!

Great drill Coach. I don't have to try and stop my backswing as thats as much natural length anyway lol...Maybe I automatically do this as when I play with new people they ask how I hit so far with a short backswing. My reply is not as technical as yours but I do say, you dont need a huge backswing like some pros do, just watch Jon Rahm...

Cant wait to try it. Im a scratch player, have always had a strong lateral move into lead leg, but not much push and turn off of it, something I need to work on. Hopefully this will help. I also struggle with aoa with driver getting slightly negative, like -1 or 0. When I try and hit 10 degrees up, it ends up being +2 or so max.

This is a great tip... just got back from the range, really working increasing hand speed. I never used to use my right arm/hand whatever but this drill showed me how important it is. My 4i is banging away and I can get out to 125 yard flag with my 54 (really going after it al aiming more right) which I used to need my 44° PW to reach sometimes. Handspped unlocked is like a cheat code. 👍👍👍

This should be a doddle for me. For years my mates have mocked me about the pause in my backswing 'time to make a cup of tea' etc. Little did they know I was ahead of the curve the whole time. 😅

This drill is spot on with what I was thinking about this morning as I walked into my office. So many downswing problems occur because the lower body is not initiating and moving independently from the upper body. Once you start barrel-turning (both upper and lower bodies turning in unison), the clubhead is cast to place that makes it nearly impossible to hit the ball from the inside. Thanks so much for a drill and possibly a practice swing technique, that makes us feel the correct sequence!

I actually went to this swing in my actual play (starting swing from the top) and went from a 15 handi to a 5! For years, I had struggled with lunging/hitting from the top and either coming over the top with a pull hook or weak slice. I was about ready to quit the game. It's a drastic change and I get crap from my buddies, but I'm the one usually collecting the $ cash post round now!

Long live Jack Nicklaus' backswing - hehe. Still, I completely agree and wonder why most golfers feel to need to overswing on every shot. Okay when I was on the high school team thinking in improved my "manhood" but it didn't add any length to my... ah, nevermind.

fine this really interesting ive recently took golf back up after around a 20 year gap (14-34) and my iron game isnt the best (granted im using old cheap irons) but last time i went the driving range my 7 iron strike was only around 130-140, in contexts i did a round few days ago and on a 166 yards hole i used a very very old driving iron (modern day hybird from what i gather) to get to the green in one hit lol (note my driver game is still on point 220+ yard with a 20 year old driver but my short game is terrible lol)

I asked my swing coach one time, "Why don't golf swings work like a baseball swing where you set yourself with the club at top like you would a baseball bat would be behind you ready to swing?" He looked at me and just said "It don't work like that" I did try it on my own once or twice, but it didn't go well for me. I may have to go back to it and do this drill and see how I do now. 😀

I noticed one PGA tour player do this in a tournament. Was it Hideki? No backswing. As someone relatively new to golf but not baseball, I always wondered what the real purpose of the backswing is. If we can hit just as far without it, why put it in? I will have to try this at the range and perhaps on the course in the spring.

Well done. The drill is a lot like a baseball player up to bat waiting and then swinging at a low and away pitch. The sequencing is very similar.

You're doing a short back swing each time. Cocking it. Thanks for the tip! Gonna try it.
