I have owned both a T120 and an Interceptor 650, and I honestly cannot say either one was my favourite, I loved them both. They are both so similar and yet so different, both awesome bikes. The only criteria I would use today if I was thinking of buying either again is price. Triumph (in my opinion) are generally over-priced, RE are well-priced.

I think that's a fair assessment. Triumph are a BIT overpriced. And RE's are a fantastic value for what you get. RE are great easy commuters. Very comfortable and relaxing and enjoyable. Triumphs are more GRUNTY...more rip-worthy. More passing traffic with a statement. I personally prefer 100Hp bikes. I've had 35hp and 200hp.. but 100HP on 400lbs is a perfect combo to me. Right in the sweetspot of power to weight and everyday rideability. I don't need any more. Wouldn't want less.

I’ll be honest… I currently own an Interceptor and it’s the only motorcycle I’ve ever owned and been totally content with. Would I ever want a Triumph? If I had enough money to own another bike it would be a RE Signals 350. If I had even more money then (& only then) I would add the T120 to the collection.
As a hard working individual who manages to pay the bills I absolutely love my Interceptor & couldn’t be happier. Miles of smiles.

I have never understood tribalism with motorbike brands. I genuinely really like at least one bike from pretty much every manufacturer. I want all motorcycle manufacturers to succeed. More competitors are naturally a good thing for every industry as it keeps everyone honest.

Very nice review of three wonderful bikes. I have been riding motorcycles for more decades than I care to admit... I have owned many brands, Honda, Yamaha, Harley Davidson and I recently purchased an RE INT 650. I too considered all three bikes you reviewed in this video and I rode them all to help me come to a decision. After testing these bikes along with a very clean, used prior generation, air cooled Bonneville. It came down to the air cooled Bonneville or the Interceptor. Not that I did not appreciate the new Triumphs... I did. They just did not provide the raw visceral riding experience I was seeking. After an S&S exhaust upgrade to the INT 650 and a few other small tweaks, I find it to be the most enjoyable bike I have owned or ridden. It is hard to explain what it is like to ride the RE 650 Interceptor... best way I can put into words is it's the two wheeled equivalent to an air cooled, boxer powered car from the 60's. The new Bonneville's are beautiful, refined and the feel is very modern with some of the old look that attracted prospective buyers like me. For the record, I found value in each bike at it's price point. So, cost was not a major factor regarding my choice. Based on the simple, pure joy I was seeking... the RE INT delivered more than expected and it gets better with each ride.

Thank you Jack, that was a nice comparison. I'm envious of your good roads and minimal traffic when compared to local conditions here in Philippines, where a single-cylinder 150cc Skygo Earl Classic suffices for me, as traffic rarely gets above 40 kph in the urban setting and 60 kph is flying! They still manage to kill 36/day on the roads here, though.
Having ridden the Interceptor in West Australia last year - and liking it - I'd opt for that as, in AUD, it costs from $10,990 ride away, whereas the T100 ride away price is from $18,290. The T120's price is from $20,890... Yes, the Triumph is perceived as a top-end product, but is it really twice as good as the Interceptor? Personally, I don't think so.

  • @peterwhalley6491

I do agree with your opening comments. The Triumphs are brillient bikes, especially the T120. After test riding one I fell in love, I consider it my ultimate bike if money was no object. I thought the Street twin was good and I loved the engine, however I didn't fall for it, and after the test ride was not convinced the bike was for me. I prefered the Interceptor to the street twin/ T100 and so given the price bought one. So in consideration the Speed Twin/ T120 would be my ultimate bike if money was no object but having bought the Intercepter I will not be swapping it for the T120/ Speed. My requirements are specific to me therefore I respect that others will not agree and will purchase something else. Thank god for that, wouldn't it be boring if everone rode the same bike, we would have nothing to ogle at the bike meet.

Went to test ride of the T100/T120 a today here in India. I have been a Triumph fanboy for last decade. Dont have one yet, but I ended up purchasing the leathers and boots from the brand, in an anticipation of owning one soon. That never happened. And now, Interceptor is the new player on the game. To my liking, don't think I would need anything more than a 650 twin, with apt capacity for touring 2 up. Also, back here in India, the ownership of premium brands could take a toll on you. Telling by experience. I think this review will def help someone like me who may be in split minds with these two if budget is not a concern. And if you are on a budget, it easy to pick your choice. Afterall, the money you save of these, can take you many more tours and expeditions that you would like.

Hi really good street view and content. Trust me RE Interceptor 650 is practical bike and easy to maintain. I use my Inceptor 650 for long ride, inter-city and for office too sometimes in traffic here in Mumbai. Trust me it is really good as compared to Japanese Retro bikes. Japanese bike here in India are really good for commuter segment with good fuel mileage, maintenance and engine. Also Triumph is very expensive here in India and their maintenance is bit expensive. Most important is RE Bikes have soul and biker feel connected. Rest it is personal choice of every rider as an which bike they like depending upon their riding styles and need.

No idea what Euro 4 or 5 is but interesting to hear your views. I had a 790 Bonny for a while and then bought a new interceptor and I feel that it is the better bike of the two but it is few years newer. Also the enfield has provenance and is the same company essentially. The Triumph isn't a Triumph when all is said and done as John Bloor just bought the name and not the company. Hotly debated often but not important as it is the rider satisfaction that really counts. Horses for courses basically.

After watching several videos on the RE Interceptor and not being able to get on my T120 for almost a month, I took the Triumph out yesterday. I was surprised by the feel of the weight of the T120 which up to this point was simply what it was. For some reason it felt heavy, not clumsy just heavy which makes me think that an RE Interceptor would be quite a bit easier to "throw around" in city traffic. I am anxious to try an Interceptor, which my dealer still has not received, as well as an RE 350. Thanks for the comparison.

Great review. You succeeded in giving an unbiased assessment on 3 bikes excellent all rounders. I’ve ridden them all and went for the T100 which gives me the balance of power and performance I’m looking for and in my stable of 3 bikes is my go to steed! On a 3000ml tour of Scotland with my, fast but safe, younger brother on his Moto Guzzi tt v850 I easily keep up on all terrains. With an average 70mpg I had a real 200ml tank range from the 14.7lt tank so sensible fuel stops (Moto Guzzi has huge 23lt tank and averaged 55mpg).
Did the 400ml return journey in 6.5hrs and could have happily stayed on the bike and gone straight back up there! I had fitted a Triumph King And Queen seat with a Cool Cover fitted and dropped the pegs 30mm with Tec parts, a Dart Merlin screen with a small wind defuser completed my “Touring”.
Could the Enfield do it, yes of course! Not quite the comfort/performance levels and would have struggled with our brisk progress but yes. I did Istanbul and back in 1976 two up with full camping gear on a 18bhp 350cc Matchless, you can tour on any bike, mind your we had a generous 10weeks to do the journey in.
Buy which ever bike takes your fancy and suits your wallet, all 3 are great and won’t disappoint.

Finally a fair and honestly done review comparing these bikes .... They are all classic moderns and twin engines .... but the RE costs 1/2 the price in BR .. it´s not fair to compare them directly ... I have studied all them deeply since I´m looking forward to buy one of them in a 6 months period .. and like you said, The T´s are a premium brand and the RE Interceptor offers great value for money ..... I recently did a ride test on the RE and was impressed ( I had HD´s and BMW´s GS in the past ) I´m really inclined for the RE even being passionated by the T120 .... Manteinance wise, costs are the same in BR ... which sounds ridiculous .... on my opinion .... but the RE is a heel of a great bike ... Cheers from BR

I really liked the objective comparison between the different bikes. I've got an Interceptor which I love, but I just love the look of the T100. Can I justify getting both? I'm not interested in the price or the difference in the quality of the switches or such like, so it comes down to the ride characteristics. It looks like it comes down to the fact that the T100 has a bit more oomph when you open the throttle.
Do I need that? No, the Interceptor has more than enough get up and go to kill myself, so I'm really no further forward. I'm back to trying to justify spending out another £5000 on a secondhand T100 whilst still keeping the Interceptor. I'm starting to feel quite self-indulgent for even considering it. Damn it, I'm disappearing up my own backside now. Perhaps I should have a few beers and then decide. I find that I always have better judgement after I've had a few.

While the Triumphs are better and more powerful bikes, they do cost a lot more. They are also more complex with water cooling, throttle by wire and so on. The closest bike of the three to a '69 Bonneville is the Interceptor, and for the least money.
If you truly want a "retro" bike the Interceptor is it. If you want a flashy, beautiful powerful machine and have the dough, get the T120. It's a little odd to compare a $6000 apple to a $12000 orange but they do look similar.
Maybe a clean, used T100 is the best choice here.

Better engine, better brakes, better suspension, better switch gear, better service intervals, better reliability, better fuel economy, and better range on a tank. But at 1.5 times the cost difference they are both the same value for money. I know the maintenance on earlier bikes is similar especially on the chrome, which does need more maintenance on the Royal Enfield engine cases. I always spray my bikes with pro prep after every wash. But I have noticed the engine casings on my bullet always need that bit of extra protection and attention. That said a guy I know had a earlier thruxton now 4 years old and he looks after it. He had to swop out his engine casings 🤔 after two years.?

Tbh the price is not a big factor for the mature (ok old) buyers in the classic market segment, it’s more down to image and memories. Triumphs were the bikes of my youth; ‘75 Trident, ‘59 Speed Twin and ‘74 Tiger, a RE Interceptor didn’t feature back then and so doesn’t hold the same appeal now. Back then speed was everything so today it has to be the T120 regardless of whether the extra performance is needed. Who said buying a bike had anything to do with logic? Passion is the driver, hence the T120 in my shed scratches the itch nicely. 😊

Good review . So true about the arguments .. I have to say its the minority of RE owners who slag off
Triumph as being overpriced and a rip-off that are the instigators of much of the nonsense !! In my
experience they are often members of that unique band of self loathing Brits who love to run down
anything connected with the UK ( A certain UA-camr seems to have emerged as their messiah ! )
The RE's 3000 mile service intervals compared to 10.000 mile on the Triumph is the deal breaker
for me and one that most buyers don't consider enough .
As well as a practical consideration it points to the fundamental level of engineering you are purchasing .
Nothing wrong with RE , but as in all things its cheaper for a reason . If it were simply a smaller , lower performance
version of the Bonny it would indeed be a bargain but it isn't .... as in all thigs you get what you pay for and both offer
relative value . As you say very different bikes that happen to look alike .

People always cheer on their own team. Air cooled vs water cooled.. my 356 was old tech requiring 1500 mile valve checks which didn't make them any less desirable, it was easy to do. Part of the fun of owning the Interceptor is doing your own servicing. It's not a shortcoming unless you can't or don't want to, then it could be. lol

I don't get it why everyone saying that interceptor needs servicing every 3000miles when it actually is 6000 .... I have the 2021 model... maybe the 2020 or 2019 had 3000 ?
If you Google you can find the 2021 interceptor owners book and see by your self...
Unless checking oil ,your chain for slack and... the flashing lights if they work properly are considered 《 servicing 》 so ... ya then 3000miles it is ! Cheers and stay safe

Seven recalls for the Bonneville series since 2016 - everything from fire risk from leaking petrol, damaged wiring looms, leaking coolant, to gearbox issues.
So much for perceived quality (former Triumph owner), and the RE650 service interval is 10,000km.

    • @neosmith166
      @neosmith166 2 роки тому

As far as I know Triumph owners started the entire conflict with their owners looking down on Royal Enfield who suddenly found were making quality and affordable bikes... some even making preposterous claims that Interceptor was a copy of Bonneville which is is complete rubbish as one just needs to go some years back to see that Royal enfield had Interceptors in the past too albeit 750 cc.
So I refute such claims that it's Royal Enfield making the waters muddy when it's quite opposite now that Triumph can't sell overpriced hardware in the name of vintage classic anymore when a. Royal Enfield is the oldest brand and b. Royal Enfield kept producing classic bikes.

Hi Tom. Yes I found the Triumphs certainly a good inch to inch and a half lower . Seat height on the T100 is about 1.5 cm lower at 79cm but the springs on the rear were slightly softer maybe the pre load setting from the factory. Once on the bike this is noticeable. On the t100 my 30inch leg had both feet firmly flat on the ground as it does on my t120. 👍

It's not the seat height of the Interceptor it's the width of the crankcase which is right where your legs fall. I own a Classic RE no problem with a 27" inside seam, an Interceptor with on paper the same seat height I can't touch the ground with the bike upright.
