Always remember. If you bid on an upgrade you might wind up under a dance floor or above a kitchen. Once you are awarded the upgrade you have it. You can’t go back.
Hi Don I did the opposite. P and O Australia oversold the mini suite. So they have offered me a full refund of my cruise fare to down grade to a balcony. So we have a free cruise It was an offer we could not refuse
we were on Princess in January 2023. Had booked an guaranteed balcony, forward (the least expensive balcony). we bid and won the upgrade to a mini-suite for $150 per person ($300 total). If we had booked it originally, it would have been more than $1700 more.
Wow, great bidding strategy, Don - thanks for sharing!! Hope you still win some!!
This was our salvation on Oasis. We chose a Central Park balcony. It was much too noisy during the day (rock band playing at the pool above us all day). Since we were doing back to back, we bid on an outside balcony for week two. What a difference. Glad to hear other lines are doing this as well.
Love this Don. Thanks
Thank you for great advice Don. We gave it a try and won the bid on a sold out ship. We went from guaranteed interior to balcony. We've cruised about 14 times in an interior so we were fine with it but it's nice to have sunlight and fresh air to help us wake up -- without having to go up to public areas first thing. Appreciate your content and expert advice.
Thanks for the tip Don, also good luck to you 😃🤞
An owners suite. Very nice Don. Figuring when you bid, it’ll be considerably cheaper than if had booked it directly.
Saw you sail out last night Don! I can watch the cruise ships from my balcony in Vancouver!
That's cool Princess is joining the bidding war Don! I've personally never won a bidding price!!😅...and it makes scense now..All my bids were Even numbers! Lol..I'm totally taking your advice from now on with the bidding! Maybe I'll get one this December to finally hit!!!
Have a fantastic cruise Don 😊 xo
Informative as always Don! Sailing for the first time on Princess next year in an interior and this is extremely useful information!
@P¡nned by- Don's Family vacation • you’ve been reported
I love royal princess! Beautiful ship!
I've often wondered if the upgrade process is weighted in some ways to churn as many upgrades as possible. In other words, if you are in a middle level room (ex. a balcony), you might get upgraded before a person in an Oceanview or Inside just so they can put someone in your cabin. Similarly, junior suites get upgraded first to suites to open up the junior suite. No proof of this, but it does seem to maximize profit possibilities for the cruise lines.
We bid on our last two cruises with NCL. From balcony to balcony with spa access on the Escape and from balcony to club balcony on the Pearl last April. We are waiting for our offer for the Haven on the Joy in two weeks 🤞. We are in reflection for the Prima in October. For the moment we have two in two by offering a little more than the minimum.
We only sailed on Princess one time but it is memorable because we were upgraded from a balcony to a mini suite and given a partial refund. Our travel agent said she had never seen this before. We never did find out why but the mini suite was very nice.
The upgrades are going to be harder and more expensive as the ships fill. On the second Edge sailing after restart I went from interior to Aqua balcony for a couple of hundred bucks (worth that just for Blu but we never spent anytime in spa). Now even the minimum bids are already a lot bigger and are usually more than I want to pay.
We have bid twice to a Jr/mini suite and got them both.
Have to try this.
Monetising what they used to do for free… I’ve had two upgrades on Princess from a mini suite to full suite from the “tick box if you would take an upgrade” process. Wonder it that will disappear.
I would love it if Viking and HAL had this program! I hope you keep winning!
NCL will text you once you pay in full for your present booked room. I always put in a bid too. I won lowest Haven sweet for $480 bucks. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain.
Thanks for sharing this! I would love to do this but my husband is cheap!! Lol 💕⚓️🛳🥰
Lately, NCL has been sending upgrade e-mails about 120 days from embarkation date. Keep watching as prices drop, though, because sometimes prices fall below your bid, meaning you should either book or lower your bid. Last week the price dropped below our bid on a 2BR suite in the Haven on the Norwegian Getaway. Because the number of these suites available began dwindling, we booked it to guarantee the cabin (and to pick our cabin) and cancelled all our bids.
I did that with our bids, though, where I bid a few dollars above a round number we were happy with. I called it The Price is Right Strategy.
On Royal Caribbean's RoyalUp bid system, you can only bid in $5 increments. So you can't bid odd amounts like $207.
Me personally I never bid on an upgrade because I always get a balcony and once I know I'm in a good location on the ship I don't want to risk getting a room that even though is at a higher tier it could be located elsewhere on the ship where it could be noisy for example. Plus if you are on a cruise you shouldn't be spending much time in your cabin anyway so why spend hundreds of dollars more to pay for a larger room that you're still only going to spend a fraction of your time in? That $508 could be applied towards excursions drink packages if you're a big drinker shopping or just keep that money in your pocket and use it to put a deposit for future Cruise instead.
I’m with you there. Most of the time we do a simple interior cabin and then get the All Dining Package to experience all the speciality restaurants.
I totally agree.
Exactly! If I can’t choose the cabin, I’m not doing it. I’m picky about where I’m located on board.
I’ve only been on two cruises and both were on the Royal Princess.
The first one was an 11 day Ladies cruise in the Caribbean, celebrating the 5th anniversary of my aunt surviving breast cancer, with my Aunt, mom, two cousins, and their two daughters. It was fabulous.
My second cruise was when my oldest son sent me with my boyfriend for four nights to Cabo San Lucas, for my 50th birthday. ♥️
Obviously, upgrades are only available when the ship is not full. I hate full ships, so I try to travel off peak. That is another way to increase your chances.
Princess upgrade is only for one category above the category that you have booked.
Upgrading from a sky suite to an Edge villa is locked in at a starting price of $2k pp!
We were offered a bid on ours first time. Here's hoping we bid enough
Give us an idea of the price you bid on to get the cabin you got - like the owners box
We sail our first cruise in 19 days. We are staying in an inside cabin
I just upgraded to a Mini suite, i got the information through my email.
Msc offers upgrade bids as well. They are not so convenient, in my opinion. I received an email for the upgrade bid for my last cruise on Msc Seaview. They wanted 250 euros as a minimum bid for a balcony cabin in Aurea experience. In order to win, you have to bid more than the minimum amount required. I then tried to simulate a new booking for the same cabin on Msc’s site, and the price difference from my original booking was only 177 euros. So I called Msc and changed my booking to an Aurea balcony paying only 177 euros, which is below the 250 euros minimum bid of the upgrade offer.
Solo travelers will have to pay double occupancy for an upgrade. The email I got from msc said 500 dollars for and upgrade to a whirlpool suite.. that would have been 1000 based on two people.. more than I paid for the cruise to begin with..
Happy new year to you and yours. I have a few questions for you, if one do not place a bid, is one still eligible for an upgrade? In the past we would receive an email offering a upgrade? I honestly don’t want to pay over $1000 for an upgrade, which is what it would come out to. 🤷🏻♀️ I also noted that it’s not possible to bid in increments other than (for example) 550, 555 it doesn’t allow you to bid 558. Were you already in a suite when you won your bid for the sky suite and owner suite?
As you pointed out it probably will be a challenge for those of us who need accessible staterooms. Especially since inventory for them is limited. But I'll give it a try for our Discovery Princess cruise in December and see what happens.
We have never won bid. Boohoo! On the Enchanted in November. Will try for that cruise if they are offering!
When you said upfrade I thought they were bidding for a haunted theme room...Lololol
Don, I have heard that the Princess bidding programme is only available for US citizens
Can you bid yourself even if you book through travel agent for most don't want to talk to you they want to talk to the travel agent
You have great cruise videos and tips keep up the good work man
Not playing the bidding game, just buying what I want., I like specific areas and you get no choice of upgrade locations.
Where and how do I find the upgrade bids from Princess? I will be sailing with Regal Princess in October and Emerald Princess in January 2023. Would appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks in advance!!🙏
Can you bid on any category or do you get an email telling you which cabins are available for you to bid on?
Any ideas on how much to bid ? Standard Balcony upgrade meter said 185$ per person was a fair offer for 7 day cruise
I wonder who they choose if two people bid the same amount. How do they break the tie?
I’m heading out on a princess cruise soon. We are in a mini suite already but I got the email to upgrade to a regular suite…..starting bid is £845 per person…Thats around $1,000 each….minimum.
That seems like a lot to me and not worth it…IMO.
My first cruise and im going to alaska. I currently have a balcony, where they choose my location.
Is it worth trying to bid on something bigger?
Travelling with another couple so worried one of us would win and the other would not.
In the past, they would give "upgrades" with no bidding. No extra $$. 😗
When did bidding start?
I put in the minimum bid on my NCL cruise in October. If I get it's cool if not I'll use that money on an excursion
Did you win?
Don't tell everyone the tricks Don!! I'll never win again!!LOLOL
I’m just trying to get a sense of what a typical bid is, for a balcony stateroom. We’re headed to Alaska in the summer, on Princess. 10 days total, 4 aboard ship. We got the invite to bid, and I see the slide meter. What should I bid, given that the trip is about a month out? Thanks.
That's great...but upfrade?...lol
Sounds like Ebay!
When you book the cabin you want , you don't need to bid on an upgrade.
Just won an ‘upgrade’ on Oasis OTS, however it’s not in a great location! We’ll have to see how the experience is!
Hey, did you bid the minimum??
@@gnsgml11 no but I bid an odd amount, and a few $ to the minimum bid
@@joannecater8047 ive just bidded $25 more than minimum. Hopefully it works
Never heard about bidding.
I already booked majestic princess how I can upgrade can you hepl ❤thanks
I'm confused. If you are paying more, how are you saving money? And what if you are solo with a 0% single supplement? Does a $100 bid still cost $200?
Be careful on NCL, if you win the bid, it's based on double occupancy, so if you bid $1000 and win, it costs $2000
Upgrade
If you bid is it per person or per room?
508 is still an even number
Thanks for the information. However, you spelled Upgrade incorrectly in the title of the video
There’s always one…….
@@bamareb1968 OH please. I politely pointed out a minor error, in the only way i know how to communicate with Don. Go troll somewhere else
How much should we bid for an uograde
A little trick…..bid 1/2 price +$1
I won £3:60 on the lottery once, but I hit the jackpot when I met Mrs Boulder....
If you bid for an upgrade, do you have to pay the difference
I always worry the upgrade won’t be better than what I booked.
so i sail in 85 days on my first cruise ever. its with Enchanted Princess.. Princess sent me an email yesterday offering me a bid upgrade... when i try to search club mini suites as a "new" res, it says there are literally none available.. so since its not selling the class it is offering me (club level mini suite) to upgrade to (Im currently on deck 9, in a BA balcony) ... why is it offering me that upgrade lol? if they have it and they dont give it to me.. who are they gonna sell it to?
Is the bid per cabin or per person per cabin? Like if I bid $502 and there's two people in my cabin and I win would I be charged $1,004 or the $502?
🙏🏻❤👍🏻😃
This sounds like a great idea. The only caveat is that, I'm guessing, they pick the cabin location and you will be obligated to take that cabin.
I made this mistake. I won a bid to have balcony from inside stateroom for $230 (for 4 passengers). However, the balcony is a connecting cabin which I do not like/expect. Upgrading to a guarantee cabin is risky. Princess indicates if no payment is made within 48 hours, they will cancel the upgrade. It has been 3 days pass, I don't see the cancellation yet. I've learned my lesson. I won't do this anymore without knowing exact what location I want. Good thing they've not charged me yet.
NCL u can bid to upgrade, but u get what they give u. an u cannot change ur mind. Sometime the upgrade room is not as what u had.
On our last NCL cruise we bid on an upgrade from an Oceanview to a Balcony and won. Our first win ever.
how much did you bid? your answer would help out a lot....
@@darrellq6954 I think $150.
@@brandygott1224 thanks...i am currently inside and willing to go to balcony for 300...especially for an Alaskan cruise.
@@darrellq6954 Of course, that was a year ago.
I’ve been offered upgrades for pay several times, took most but not all. I was happy with that system, not thrilled with bidding. It may have been easier with reduced capacity cruises to bid on an upgrade. Hoping this system works! Lois😊
22 cruises & have never been offered an upgrade for extra $
Okay😊
I have no idea what you are talking about ? This bidding system ?
It is ironic though that Princess cancels me twice on a Hawaiian Round Trip & only wants to give a $200 credit & wont at least upgrade from a balcony to a mini suite !😠
Not sure if the spelling mistake in the title is by design
I’m not sure how you can bid in specific amounts, RCL lets you bid in $5 increments. Is there a way around this?
Don, you are right on with needing the HA cabins. There is no way we've found to do a bidding for upgrade because they can upgrade you to any cabin in the category, not the HA my cruise partner needs. The same thing happens on Princess when they offer a special that includes a "free upgrade." We were flat out told that this did not apply to HA cabins as Princess is giving location type upgrades (aft to mid ship) and all HAs are in the same location. One thing you can do on some lines is purchasing an upgrade at port. The employee has a list of the cabins available and the cost to upgrade based on the cabin type you booked. Because she can see the specific room numbers, she can tell us whether there are any HAs available for upgrade. Upgrades at the port sell for considerably less than booking the nicer cabin to begin with as the cruise line is happy to take a few (or several) hundred dollars to show you the benefit of the nicer cabin and hopefully get you hooked on it for future cruises.

Don - What is a PRINCESS UPFRADE ?
If you win a bid, do you pay the higher daily fee for gratuities and taxes?
Pretty sure, yes.
I usually never bid because, as a solo traveller, my bids usually get doubled - oh dear!
I agree you gave out too much info on bidding techniques.
So, guess that's the end of free room upgrades....
$333.33 lol
Well, that wold be nice, but Princess apparently doesn't want me to cruise with them. They've cancelled us 5 times now, and this last time they handled it so poorly, I'm not sure I'm willing to give them a try again.
I think you mean outfrading...
Of course you were upgraded you're "DON".
Need a proof reader.
I find that dumb that if they send out upgrades to people who are disabled and need a wheelchair cabin they should have them! Its like we get singled out.
With Princess in the past we’ve generally had good luck with NOT choosing a cabin and instead picking “guaranteed class”. This has resulted in us getting upgrades 90% of the time
"UPFRADE"???Come on Don.
First
Don I keep getting pinned by Don and a number to ring I don't think this is you but a scam do I report it as spam
