A second season of Prehistoric Planet coming so soon, the Netflix series Life on our Planet coming in the fall, and what looks like a great independent documentary with Forgotten Bloodlines which is looking like it will make its fundraising goal (I personally donated $70 to it). We even are getting a second season of Amazing Dinoworld in a couple weeks so its a pretty good time for those into prehistory

Olympic was the one they made before titanic, it was dimensionally identical but had some layout differences and slightly lighter. It was refitted to be more like the titanic but safer after the titanic sank and also served as a troop transport in the war

Your videos deserve more likes. They’re all very insightful and straightforward. Also this is unrelated but Wildcard is currently suing them for stealing their models without their consent. Rather than putting actual time, money, and effort into this project, they instead took the easy route and now they’re paying for it, both figuratively and literally.
Well I’ve heard talk over it on Twitter, but Twitter isn’t exactly the most reliable of sources. But Wildcard is fully aware as they commented about the show on several occasions so a lawsuit is in order.
I have a theory that this might have tried to capitalize on the release of Prehistoric Planet or something like that. It is even just called dinosaur, which just happens to be the title of the 2000's cgi movie by Disney

I want to point out another thing that they even hired people who worked on Prehistoric Planer like Dr Susie and Paul Barrett so they had the most accurate facts and they were lazy stealing Ark designs and putting inaccurate designs. At least Prehistoric Planet listened and put effort to present accurate depictions.
The wings on the Quetzalcoatlus are also incorrectly folded. The wing fingers shouldn't fold up beside the arms, they should fold backwards behind the arms.
Great video as always, I agree with everything you said. This documentary had literally EVERYTHING a show needs to be bad, and even more (seriously, how cringe the scenes with Fry and the experts looking at the living dinosaurs were?). Without considering the two most glaring issues, which are the embarassing CGI and the enormous amount of deceitful, inaccurate or straight up wrong informations across the four episodes, perhaps one of the most infuriating aspects was the use of cheap, outdated, and inaccurate models: not just the ARK idols, but also the reconstructions from Shutterstock of animals like Oviraptor, Olorotitan or THAT Spinosaurus, all of them put in scenes where they randomly picked three/four dinosaurs from across the globe to show their variety during a period; eg. In episode 3, the show is like "in Mongolia, there was Oviraptor, while Russia was roamed by Olorotitan, and South America by Argentinosaurus." OK, AND? What did you want to tell me with that? What do I do with this informations? There's no deepening, no context, no further explanations, NOTHING. Just three animals put there completely out of random, moreover with crappy images they might have spent a max of 10 seconds to look for on internet. Oh, and just a little fun fact, Fry repeatedly defines the Cretaceous an era, while it is a period. Finally, I found the last part of the video very interesting. Right now, I'm also wondering who this documentary was aimed at, because sometimes I felt an idiot watching it, due to some extremely childish lines (like the one where Fry asks the expert how can we tell that Utahraptor was a carnivore) but, given the writing overall, it's certainly not aimed at kids, either. Well, at least we know that Forgotten Bloodlines, Life on Our Planet, Amazing Dinoworld 2 (though the 1st season was far from good imo) and, most importantly, Prehistoric Planet season 2 are on their way! I have faith in them
Too true i have faith on PP series 2 aswell and will hopefully be reviewing it too. I agree with you that the use of preset images to show some global dino detail was pretty poor. Infact one of the images, the Sauronithides? something like that it was in episode 3 i think, the actual image is the same as one i have in my Dinosaur magazines from the late 80's early 90's...

Hi, I would like to give couple of corrections on this video. The posture of the Triceratops is ok, Ceratopsids have semi sprawled front legs unlike the back legs which are more erect. 3:49 yes, there were indeed some ankylosaurs during the Late Jurassic such as Gargoyleosaurus and Mymoorapelta (the only ones I've found), and coincidentally they have been found in the Morrison Formation. Also, didn't you say in your second video that you would've stopped talking about this crappy documentary? If so, then I'm glad you made another video because watching people talk bad about this pile of coprolite is both funny and relaxing.
In regards to the Triceratops - Im not sure you are correct about the posture. A key defining feature of all dinosaurs is that their legs are columner, going straight down. All recreations of the triceratops ive seen have straight down legs, and even if they did sprawl slightly, the sprawl seen in this episode is far too servere. In regards to the ankylosaurs living alongside stegosaurus...i was not denying that primitive ankylosaurs and stegosaurus lived at at he same. My issue was the showing of the Ankylosaurus itself being shown alongside, making it seem that the two lived alongside each other. And yes i did say i wouldnt be making any more, however enough people asked me to do it that i chose to do one final video on it

I think one thing I like about your videos is the whoosh sound effects and the bell ringing and that you don't yell much if at all for these (at least for your reviews of Dinosaur with Stephen Fry, cause those are the videos of yours that I have seen)
Heh i am a fairly simple editor sort of person. For these particular reviews I tend to go off the idea that most folks listen to something like this in the background while doing other things. The woosh sound effect is usually used to indicate the moving from one topic to another or when i want to emphasis that there is something on screen to quickly glance at. As for the yelling, due to the limitations of the room where i record If i do yell loudly, the walls reflect my voice so well it would ruin the recording so that. In addition, i agree with what VW have said for their advertising campaigns, that "...Dont shout, talk normally. If you have something intelligent to say people will listen..."

I'm sort of confused with the hunter or scavenger argument. So, its like predators are opportunistic to either hunt or search food? (as you can see I didn't watch the show)
Any predator will happily scavenge when given the opportunity. They generally prefer to hunt and catch live prey, but if they stumble across a carcass, they'll eat it, because it's free food that won't run away or fight back. Even herbivores like deer have been known to scavenge from carcasses from time to time, as meat contains some proteins that they can't get from just eating plants.
So Jack Horner (a relativly famous Paleotologist) started this who movement in the early 2000's that T-rex was ONLY a scavenger. Its a theory that has persisted. To me the theory has always been stupid, because literally any predator will scavenge when given the chance, especially once they are over a certain size. His theory also didnt explain the large number of fossilzed remains with clearly healed Trex damage, indicating active hunting.
Prehistoric Planet was made by the BBC yet is only legally available on Apple TV+. To think it could've inspired a whole new generation of palaeontologists.
3:23 Dinosaurs color are NOT unknown guesses. Let's debunk this myth. As a matter of FACT we know EXACTLY how 7 species of dinosaurs looked like - colors, patterns, everything. In 2018 this became "partially" possible for T.Rex as well, as the melanosomes on a skin impression revealed it was reddish-brown and black, striped. With the cheratin structure over each eyebrow being orange. An incredible paleoart reconstruction by RJ Palmer was made after this, extremely meticolous, and taking into account every tiny detail we currently know. It's the most accurate T.Rex ever and I highly suggest looking at it. Beautiful.
do you have any sources for this Trex information. I was aware of the discovery of SOME colour information for some specific fossils however I havent heard anything about the Trex. So if you have any links or sources to this Id like to see it. Generally however, we need to accept that for a wide amount of dinosaurs, we have no information. Again, the show did not explain where they go the colouration from.

Even if it's the exception to the rule. About T.Rex... I don't remember anymore, it was everywhere 5 or so years ago. I think I may have heard the first time from Henry Paleoguy or Ben G thomas? Back to the source, part of me remembers it's Julia Clarke... but maybe I'm getting confused by that BBC documentary, and she just researched/reconstructed a believable "roar" for the T.Rex. I tried to look into it, but I got lost in reposts so I wasn't able to trace the original source back. Something I vividly remember is it being due to melanosomes, and "reddish-brown and black" being said by everyone in copypaste fashion. Tbh with you, this might turn out to be a huge mandela effect... But in the same period three independently-made T.Rex reconstruction had the same key elements: Orange cheratine, with a rust-colored and slightly striped body. (RJ Palmer, BBC and the American Museum of Natural History - with the former being the only one to ditch the dinofuzz-mane people liked back then) It's hard to believe these three came up with a similar look by coincidence - especially since it's an unique look. While it can be just a coincidence of course, it may also be that there's not just one source... Making it harder to pinpoint exactly where this originated. Sadly I couldn't be of much help... But if you manage to put the pieces together, I'd love a vid about it XD
Well i did go and have a look about this. There is some evidence, based on work by one scientist, however even in his report he makes it really clear that even he doesnt consider his results definitive smoking gun evidence, and that much more work needs to be done. But yeah i might do a Beyond the Park on this at some point heh

I do remember walking with caveman. Its not a show I will be ever admitting exists again lol. As for how im going to do the walking with shows, I'm going to study them all and do long videos, and then once finished I might do some sort of community discussion with guests if folks are interested.
Walking With Cavemen? I remember it was promoted on my local TV station after Walking With Dinosaur and Walking With Beasts finished airing, I ignored it because prehistoric humans were not my subject of interest when I was 8 (despite my aunt doing a doctorate research on primate behaviour away in Japan back then). Then I tried watching it about 2 years ago. My innocence has yet to return and I will forever be terrified with what ungodly sight I have seen. The less said about it the better.
You were right. This show did slightly improve, however. It still doesn't make it forgivable, from the awful cgi to the misleading and incorrect facts, oh and the use of arks models. This show is easily the shittest dinosaur documentary period. Recently, I've been doing a re watch of the walking with documentaries, and my god, I forgot how good they were, this is including the specials with nigel Marvin. It was also nice seeing animatronics and good cgi that I still think holds up to this day. Also, I just thought I'd ask, but what is your opinion on planet dinosaur from 2014.
I havent actually seen planet dinosaur. Most of these documentaries on things like Discovery channel got missed by me because at the time I was at university and didnt have access to the channels. I agree with you that WWD still holds up reasonably well in 2023.
Honestly, I would argue that you CAN do this on the cheap. You can make a better show than this if you have actual passion, research, and either properly loaned or free assets. People want to see dinosaurs, light phasing through leaves as they eat or water as they drink can be forgiven if the science and passion are both right
Jack Horner nowadays is on board with the idea that T. rex was an opportunist. Listen to any podcast he’s done in the last five years. He estimates that the ecological role T. rex filled might have been equivalent to Hyenas in Africa today.
The 20 000 T.rex at anytime isn't something they came up with i had been looking at some info on it last year and this number came up, and while i can't attest the the veracity of the information it does have some source other than them.
My issue with it is that they didnt explain where the number came from. They just inserted it into the script without any information. Which makes the figure seem like a number pulled out of thin air for the show.

I will say that using Arks dinosaurs in a Documentary is beyond lazy. Ark's dinos are meant to be cartoonish and unusual for players to be amazed by, putting the assets into something that should be taken seriously is like adding Ian Malcolm to Fortnite. It's dumb, it doesn't make sense, and overall just pisses people off more that find meaning in dinosaurs. (Also Epic Games, please do not add Ian Malcolm to Fortnite, it was an example)
Jurassic park 3 was decent movie and had the best dinosaurs design (if anything they give them actual colors) in franchise. Jurassic World movies are real dumpster fire.

@@ExtremeMadnessX keep in mind, the DNA was not pure so they had to use dna from other animals to fill in the gaps. It's not till Dominion that some dinosaurs genomes were 100%. Michael Crichton was a genius when he introduced the Frog Dna in a way, that yes the dinosaurs are different, because they arent pure. Dr. Sorkin from Jurassic Park:The Game goes into more depth with the side-effects or defects from this "Shortcut" Henry used for Hammonds dream. Now JP/// would get points if it included the trespassing of Dr.Wu and Biosyn. It was this that made the raptors more "accurate" and the inclusion of unreported species such as the Spinosaurus. The Raptors in JW, especially Blue, her color scheme was due to Blue Monitor Lizard DNA being placed in her genome. And yes, the monitor lizard dna was confirmed back in 2015, so dont go screaming "Plot armour" about that. There is so many ways to fight the scientific with the logic and lore Crichton has given us.

The woosh sound effect is usually used to indicate the moving from one topic to another or when i want to emphasis that there is something on screen to quickly glance at. As for the yelling, due to the limitations of the room where i record If i do yell loudly, the walls reflect my voice so well it would ruin the recording so that. In addition, i agree with what VW have said for their advertising campaigns, that "...Dont shout, talk normally. If you have something intelligent to say people will listen..."

I'm sort of confused with the hunter or scavenger argument. So, its like predators are opportunistic to either hunt or search food?

Any predator will happily scavenge when given the opportunity. They generally prefer to hunt and catch live prey, but if they stumble across a carcass, they'll eat it, because it's free food that won't run away or fight back. Even herbivores like deer have been known to scavenge from carcasses from time to time, as meat contains some proteins that they can't get from just eating plants.
So Jack Horner (a relativly famous Paleotologist) started this who movement in the early 2000's that T-rex was ONLY a scavenger. Its a theory that has persisted. To me the theory has always been stupid, because literally any predator will scavenge when given the chance, especially once they are over a certain size. His theory also didnt explain the large number of fossilzed remains with clearly healed Trex damage, indicating active hunting.

As a matter of FACT we know EXACTLY how 7 species of dinosaurs looked like - colors, patterns, everything.
In 2018 this became "partially" possible for T.Rex as well, as the melanosomes on a skin impression revealed it was reddish-brown and black, striped.
With the cheratin structure over each eyebrow being orange.
An incredible paleoart reconstruction by RJ Palmer was made after this, extremely meticolous, and taking into account every tiny detail we currently know.
It's the most accurate T.Rex ever and I highly suggest looking at it. Beautiful.
do you have any sources for this Trex information. I was aware of the discovery of SOME colour information for some specific fossils however I havent heard anything about the Trex. So if you have any links or sources to this Id like to see it.
Generally however, we need to accept that for a wide amount of dinosaurs, we have no information. Again, the show did not explain where they go the colouration from.

Back to the source, part of me remembers it's Julia Clarke... but maybe I'm getting confused by that BBC documentary, and she just researched/reconstructed a believable "roar" for the T.Rex.
I tried to look into it, but I got lost in reposts so I wasn't able to trace the original source back.
Something I vividly remember is it being due to melanosomes, and "reddish-brown and black" being said by everyone in copypaste fashion.
Tbh with you, this might turn out to be a huge mandela effect...
But in the same period three independently-made T.Rex reconstruction had the same key elements: Orange cheratine, with a rust-colored and slightly striped body.
(RJ Palmer, BBC and the American Museum of Natural History - with the former being the only one to ditch the dinofuzz-mane people liked back then)
It's hard to believe these three came up with a similar look by coincidence - especially since it's an unique look.
While it can be just a coincidence of course, it may also be that there's not just one source... Making it harder to pinpoint exactly where this originated.

Well i did go and have a look about this. There is some evidence, based on work by one scientist, however even in his report he makes it really clear that even he doesnt consider his results definitive smoking gun evidence, and that much more work needs to be done. But yeah i might do a Beyond the Park on this at some point heh

Walking With Cavemen? I remember it was promoted on my local TV station after Walking With Dinosaur and Walking With Beasts finished airing, I ignored it because prehistoric humans were not my subject of interest when I was 8 (despite my aunt doing a doctorate research on primate behaviour away in Japan back then).
Then I tried watching it about 2 years ago. My innocence has yet to return and I will forever be terrified with what ungodly sight I have seen.
The less said about it the better.

You were right. This show did slightly improve, however. It still doesn't make it forgivable, from the awful cgi to the misleading and incorrect facts, oh and the use of arks models. This show is easily the shittest dinosaur documentary period. Recently, I've been doing a re watch of the walking with documentaries, and my god, I forgot how good they were, this is including the specials with nigel Marvin. It was also nice seeing animatronics and good cgi that I still think holds up to this day. Also, I just thought I'd ask, but what is your opinion on planet dinosaur from 2014.
I havent actually seen planet dinosaur. Most of these documentaries on things like Discovery channel got missed by me because at the time I was at university and didnt have access to the channels. I agree with you that WWD still holds up reasonably well in 2023.

Yeah...the models just feel so static and rigid, their movement seem pained and sluggish like they are walking around with broken ribs.

Honestly, I would argue that you CAN do this on the cheap. You can make a better show than this if you have actual passion, research, and either properly loaned or free assets. People want to see dinosaurs, light phasing through leaves as they eat or water as they drink can be forgiven if the science and passion are both right

Jack Horner nowadays is on board with the idea that T. rex was an opportunist. Listen to any podcast he’s done in the last five years. He estimates that the ecological role T. rex filled might have been equivalent to Hyenas in Africa today.

The 20 000 T.rex at anytime isn't something they came up with i had been looking at some info on it last year and this number came up, and while i can't attest the the veracity of the information it does have some source other than them.
My issue with it is that they didnt explain where the number came from. They just inserted it into the script without any information. Which makes the figure seem like a number pulled out of thin air for the show.

Ummm ok? Which Jurassic Park ya looking at? Jurassic Park ///? Cuz that was a total dumpster fire that deserves to be tossed into Mt.Sibo. I will say that using Arks dinosaurs in a Documentary is beyond lazy. Ark's dinos are meant to be cartoonish and unusual for players to be amazed by, putting the assets into something that should be taken seriously is like adding Ian Malcolm to Fortnite. It's dumb, it doesn't make sense, and overall just pisses people off more that find meaning in dinosaurs. (Also Epic Games, please do not add Ian Malcolm to Fortnite, it was an example)
Jurassic park 3 was decent movie and had the best dinosaurs design (if anything they give them actual colors) in franchise. Jurassic World movies are real dumpster fire.

Jurassic Park 3 raptors designs was so cool and more scientifically accurate, especially eyes. Dinosaurs in Jurassic World movies were even more scientifically inaccurate than original Jurassic Park.
@@ExtremeMadnessX keep in mind, the DNA was not pure so they had to use dna from other animals to fill in the gaps. It's not till Dominion that some dinosaurs genomes were 100%. Michael Crichton was a genius when he introduced the Frog Dna in a way, that yes the dinosaurs are different, because they arent pure. Dr. Sorkin from Jurassic Park:The Game goes into more depth with the side-effects or defects from this "Shortcut" Henry used for Hammonds dream. Now JP/// would get points if it included the trespassing of Dr.Wu and Biosyn. It was this that made the raptors more "accurate" and the inclusion of unreported species such as the Spinosaurus. The Raptors in JW, especially Blue, her color scheme was due to Blue Monitor Lizard DNA being placed in her genome. And yes, the monitor lizard dna was confirmed back in 2015, so dont go screaming "Plot armour" about that. There is so many ways to fight the scientific with the logic and lore Crichton has given us.
