I literally watched a Preparemind101 video directly before coming to this one, the one on the Cold Steel Bushman. Bought another one after watching it. $18 on Amazon. I need help
Turned out great, wrapping it in foil improved the result. I've got a new BK9 w/ macarta scales & kydex. Want to strip, mirror polish then spot blue w/ superblue and furniture brown, for a case hardened or heat treated look ( a rust process that protects against corrosion.
That's what your back yard is for, Pete. You're loving on the edge. Plus, that stripper can etch your stainless steel sink. Ask me how I know this, lol.
I have a BK15, which they discontinued unfortunately. It’s a really good knife, I did the same thing with a mustard patina. The BK 1095 has always performed excellently for me.
Yes I learned this the hard way. It rusts easily underneath the scales so when I strip a carbon blade, I leave the coating on underneath the scales. I do cover the edges to achieve the bare steel look when the scales are attached.
@Magnum Mountaineer I applied some clear nail polish on the tang on the blade I did strip fully. Works fine too but needs some reapplication now and then.
I did this to mine a few years ago! I kinda wished I'd left the coating on because after getting it filthy a few times the muddy water really left it's mark on the metal and it kinda looks nasty. Don't even bother trying to sand that metal to a mirror finish because it's an almost impossible task. I spent hours on it with little progress.
Why would you remove the coating? I saw several people doing it, including Chris Tanner from Prepared mind, and i wonder doesn't it prevent the knife from rust?
Well it certainly looks better, more knife like if that makes sense. Sure those micarta grips will feel better. Like many commenters, I didn't think the kitchen was a good place for this project.
Well I just ordered those micarta scales. I won't strip my BK-9, but those black scales are indeed too slippery. As an aside, there are plenty of YT videos where the poly paint stripper is used. It is usually painted on, not poored onto the object, because it's very potent and quite pricey. But maybe it was justified here. :)
Whaddya think of putting a layer of vaseline or silicon gel underneath the scales and around the screws and fittings just to keep any water from getting trapped in there?
The natural micarta looks good with the silver. BK9.5! Chemicals make me nastalgic for old music but that hasn't happened in forever; lately it's just vertigo.
I used that stuff many years.. You use what you need and use paint brush to move it where you need it.. Evenly and suitable layer. i think i get brain damage but that is fine i was stupid all ready.
After I saw how quickly the BK9 failed Joe X’s Destruction test. I chose not to make it my survival knife. I picked the Ontario SP5 because it made it past the concrete block beating test. And finally broke after an extreme tip test I would never push a blade to do.And is still very affordable at around $60 USD. The BK9 broke on the 3rd strike. It’s a good knife. But I wouldn’t bet my life on it. The buck 119 even made it to the end of the testing before its tip broke off. BK needs to work on annealing I think. Maybe they’re not facing the tips to magnetic north during the annealing process. And they need to stop skeletonizing their tangs. Pisses me off.
I just let it wear off mine. I stare intently to create friction but also admiringly so it will take a long time to stare the original coating off my knives. I wish they just had a bluing option instead of the coating.
It would be cool to take some good still hq shots of each side of the blade now. Then follow up in a year or so to show the patina that comes out of the steel. Of course you may have to use it. 😸
You can’t just say ”knife coatings” because there are tens if not hundreds of different coatings. All depends on the manufacturer and price of the knife.
I tried doing this with a BK11 back in 2008 and fucked it up. Apparently the paint stripper I used wasn't gnarly enough, so I resorted to sanding it. Not a great idea, as there were areas near the ricasso I couldn't get to with sand paper. I was really glad I didn't try it with my BK7 first.... Might try this method on my ESEE 6. Nice knife, hate the freaking billboard they put on the side.
I'm very surprised your lovely bride let you get away with this in the kitchen of your house. I suspect your new bed is the sofa in your living room or the back porch. A small, cheap toaster/convection oven is a good investment for your shop. Edit: An exhaust fan in your shop is also a marriage saver.
@@deathbyastonishment7930 I thought he had one already. "Shop" is a general term. Any space other than your house regardless of the size. Doesn't his knife lab qualify? The back ground in his videos are steel walls & shelving. I am perhaps wrong but I presumed that was a shed or garage separate from his house.
@Magnum Mountaineer Ha!Ha! That deviant sneaky Bricky. In like the dirty brick he is. I'm certain however that he isn't nearly as messy as Pete other than a few crumbs of sand or silica dust marking where he has been. Pete will have to check his bedroom for telltale signs of dust.
Imightberiding I was just poking fun at the culture gap, in Australia a shop is only a place you can buy things, not a shed. People do use workshop, but don't abbreviate it
I don't know what it is about the makeover music that makes this video feel like i'm having a bad fever dream but either way, 10/10
In the next video, Pete is transformed by the paint stripping fumes into The Toxic Avenger and fights evil with Bricky.
🦸🏻♂️⚔️ & 🧱
👍🏽‼️
Haha, he could have used about 10% of that stripper with a brush with the same effect
OMG. Tell me my eyes are lying and you aren't doing that inside...😬
PREPAREDMIND101 I knew there wa a way to summon you here!🥰

@@DL-ij7tf it only gets worse
PREPAREDMIND101 , it’s can’t hurt him that much , he’s already talking to a brick /lol . I love this channel .
@Eye of the Tiger "Yet" being the key word here, lol.
Come for the chemicals, stay for the bonus Ada B roll. 👍
I would give that blade a nice coat of black paint now it's clean to prevent rusting! 🤣
hahahaa
Knife nerd level 1000, love it! Underrated channel - you deserve a lot more views.
Bet the wife wasn't happy you did this in the house, even with the fan on. Keep up the Awesome content Pete.
The Clone High reference made my day. It's all downhill from here.
I'm so glad someone else knows where that song is from.
Knife looks much better. Make-over, make-over. That will be living in my head forever. Thanks
That song “make over” is now stuck in my darn head. Lol.
I showed a few moments of the video to wife (to see Bricky of course) and she was aghast... at the mismatched lengths of your hoodie cords.

When will the make over song be on spotify?
Great job! The micarta scales really make the look stunning. 😎👍
Looks way better without the coating nice job..

Been loving the back and forth with the rock mate!
Great video! It's awesome because I was planning on stripping mine tomorrow. Crazy timing!
I’ve been thinking about doing this to my BK7, no excuses, I’m just too damn lazy! Good for you!
I did the same to my bk2 and bk11 found wood scales on ebay turned out great
I only watched this because of the honesty in the title
The Clone High theme was truly the icing on the cake.
I don’t know, but maybe I’d oil the tang so it doesn’t rust under the handle. It’s 1095 or something that rusts, right?
I think it will just patina with rust. I don't want mine rusty but it sits new in the box.

Lol dude the random Longines just ticking away in the B roll. I cry foul sir, you said you’re not a watch guy. Perhaps Bricky?

I stripped mine, micarta handles and an imported kydex sheath about 8 years ago. Haven’t used it since 😆
this is the way

Looks great. Bricky is jealous because he has no arms.
The Chris Tanner in 2011 line killed me. Love Becky!!
Becky was my favorite
You bought the putty knife because it's a 'knife', instead of getting a spreader, didn't you! That's dedication to the life👏👍.
Bricky for God Emperor 2020
Way better looking knife! Very much worth the effort. Maybe polish the steel up and keep a coat of oil on it. Good video.
Can we get a review of that putty knife?
The brick guy is a bit tough with you... but accurate
Would you not want to patina the blade with some boiled binegar for some rust proofing after this to save on maintenance?
Clone High was one of my favourite shows when I was in high school.
Now the review to follow.. hard use review!🙂
Whaddya think of putting a layer of vaseline or silicon gel underneath the scales and around the screws and fittings just to keep any water from getting trapped in there?

You are approximately 7 years late to get any Clout for this
lol ^ when i got the bk2 and did the same thing..

Sweet...
You don't oil under the scales?
nah, we’ll see if I was wrong in 4-5 weeks thi 🤞😝
Up vote for the title!!!!
Your stone is so wise. 😄
Oil???? Especially under the scales??
Fumes??? Did it ever occur to you to do this outside?

I wish removing all coatings was this easy.
It still has a thumb ramp?
I thought knife coatings were a space age polymer like the re-entry tiles on the space shuttle. It's just paint?
This was a pretty basic coating, pretty much baked on paint yeah
You can’t just say ”knife coatings” because there are tens if not hundreds of different coatings. All depends on the manufacturer and price of the knife.
There are coatings like this, but much nicer coatings that would be unphased by this like DLC and PVD are more prevalent.

I'm with Brickie on this one.
this knife with micarta and with coating removed is fucking pretty awesome !!
Bricky can suck it that knife looks amazing now. What's the outro song you used?
Chris Tanner in 2011. What a feeling!
Haaahahaaahgaaa!!!!! Classic.

Great video, what was that song at the end of it?
Going to force a patina or go au natural?
ILY Bricky 🧱

I built an exhaust system in my garage... it’s called a $10 box fan facing the other way.
is there a way to remove the coating off the cold steel recon 1 with out taking it apart ?
You’re talking about the old Recon 1 with Teflon finish? You aren’t going to be able to remove the DLC finish on the new one most likely.
Good vid thanks, but I would have oiled under the scales before installing them.
Bricky's "congratulations" 😂
Now that's a BK I'd like to buy.
Mirror Polish the lower half of the blade. Now that’ll be the internet knife star.
The work is done...It allways will be...
Yes, New Materials. (re: handle)
What; no gunblueing?!?
I'll add oil as needed.
I usually brush on paint remover. I usually do paint stripping outside or in the garage. Wife would kill me if I did it in the house.
Cold gun blue now
You can see the rust forming in real time in that last shot.
Probably not that far from the truth.
The coating hides a surprisingly crisp grind line.
What is the name of that song?
Cool knife!🇬🇧
Now let's here your unbiased thoughts on the Esee Laser Strike (referencing 8:30ish)!
The shelf !
Now you just need to go buy a decent sheath for about twice of what you paid for the knife...
AZ Welke kydex sheaths
I'm hip. The sheath I liked was $300., Got a Valhalla for $55.
all I know is GOD BLESS ETHAN BECKER, our knife grandfather
You need to use the makeover song in future videos. It reminds me of the Kinks... Like the Kinks on a really bad off day but still... 👍
I did this too a year ago
Good job. Personally I'd have put it in a vinegar bath for 48 hours after stripping the coating but that's just me...
Your the best man...the best
Bricky told me you "touched" him with those gloves on...hahaha!
I have this knife and I would love to know when the coating is removed can the spine be used to strike a farro rod?
For next time you only need a moderate coat not the whole can. There's only so much of the blade that can be in contact
Cool dog!
Hey you know what we can do after removing the coating? Let’s leave it outside in the rain!
U could see the rust forming before your eyes !! Lol
I got an ad for an alternative to powdering one’s balls. Seems apt.
I've heard of being late to trends, but this is just ridiculous.
next week I’ll do a pocket survival kit 😝
