I'm not very impressed with my '02 at all. I'm surprised how well it runs and shifts with 280,000 miles on it, but that's literally it. The brakes suck. The LCA/LBJ design is retarded. The steering rack sucks. The headlights suck. The seatbelt always jams up. The wiper switch, hazard light button, 4wd button, and AC recirc button are constantly getting bumped. Etc. It's a weird truck. It doesn't seem like it's great for any one thing. It's more like a LWB passenger car (Camry/Corolla) with a bed. I just don't get the hype about these things.
These are great videos! I recently went to Idaho (from Vermont) to buy a 2006 DC with 195k on it - but very little rust - I feel exactly as you do about these trucks - love the double cab, and the 4.7 engine.
Ah yes... 1st Gen. Toyota Tundra and FRAME RUST, I know it well! I purchased NEW a 2005 Toyota Tundra like yours. I've treated it VERY well. Washing, waxing, cleaning, aggressive maintenance and on and on. I love this truck! Toyota has a Service Bulletin on Frame Rust for these trucks. They offered Inspection and one of two resolutions depending on what they found during the inspection. If the frame was in good condition they sprayed the frame with Rust preventative. If the Frame was rusted they replaced the Frame. I was told the Frame on my truck was only in need of the spray. Within the first year I noticed the coating they sprayed on looked to be coming off and the Frame under the coating was rusting faster than prior to the coating. I have tried MULTIPLE times to get Toyota to replace the Frame on my truck with a denied both times. I have 96,000 miles on it NOW! It was a much younger truck when all of this happened! They have a history of replacing the Frame if it was less than 15 years old. Why they deep dicked me is not known. We have nothing other than Toyota vehicles! All purchased NEW! Business must be good, or the people I had to deal with at the FACTORY level were not so good! It's Toyota's loss! I went from a GM guy to Toyota(s). I'll be sure to let EVERYONE I can know how they didn't take care of a DEFECT. We are getting close to buying a new vehicle. Toyota will NOT be at the top of my list! Sad, so sad! Time to paint a sign and spend the weekends in front of the Dealers in my area? 🤔
I got a 2004 Toyota Tundra and I absolutely love my truck I just hit 250,000 miles on it like about 2 days ago and it's still running smooth and with good power as well don't regret getting it and I'm gonna drive it till the wheels fall off!!!😏
It's worth noting that this will work on areas that don't have deep cold and salted roadways. You're truck will rust away after 20 years. It's almost impossible to keep them newish unless you hide it for the winter
Definitely considering one of these, a 1st gen Sequoia, 1st gen taco, 3rd gen 4runner, and a 91-97 Lexus lx450 🤔 basically depends on availability and condition of the potential candidates when I have money. Would be looking to use it as a fishing/camping/mild trail rig that can also haul a kayak or 2
Great video. I just picked up a 2004 crew cab tundra v8 4x4 lifted on 35s Truck is spotless with 150,000 miles Just had a huge service done timing belt water pump head gasket heads re surfaced. Hopping to keep this truck for a very long time
I got my 1st gen tundra from my father. He was the only owner. I had to patch the frame. I feel your pain for the turning radius of an adult hippo. It is such a pain to park.
I purchased my 2002 Regular Cab 4WD V8 Tundra in 2003, it's my dedicated work truck and it has just rolled past 170,000 miles. I replaced the cracked exhaust manifolds with JBA shorties, the rest of the exhaust is stock. I replaced the factory front coil springs with a set off a 2002 4WD TRD coils, Bilstein 4600 series shocks and Michelin LTX M/S2 on a set of Toyota alloys off a 2005 Limited. I also replaced the factory tail light housings with a set off a 2005, and performed the always on fog light mod. I also have a 2007 5.7L regular cab Tundra, and as much as I like the additional power and tighter turning radius, the 2002 is a better looking truck with better build quality.
Just bought my second 1st Gen. '05 4WD Limited. (148K miles, $14K) Better than a new truck IMO. Love everything about it. Going to drive the piss out of it! F CV-19!
Is 14k a good deal? I found a 2006 sr5 crew cab 4x4 with 117k miles on it with a 2inch lift, 17s wrapped with nittos and no engine mods with 1 owner no accidents, 15k. Would that be a good deal as well? The truck is clean with no rust

It's not, but it is a bigger concern on Toyota trucks. They are notorious for rusting out the frame, whereas the body will be less prone to rust idk why

I just bought an 06 Tundra back in Feb 2020 for 12,800. Its an SR5 V8 2wd with only 86k miles. No rust and everything was perfect with even the timing belt replaced at 70k and a sound system. Love it so far
My 2001 was an awesome truck. Sold it to my brother when I bought my 2012 Tundra. The 2001 is still running strong with well over 300,000 miles on it. Wish I could have kept it for myself
Really enjoying your videos. I found an 05 double cab with under 50k and loving it so far. Great analog trucks that are fun to drive. keep the videos coming.
I have an 04 Stepside, 2.5" lift, running 20" Enkei XSP rims with Michelin tires. You had a sidebar denoting after speedo fix. Who did you seek out for the recalibration? I ask because as you can probably tell, mine is OFF! New to the channel. Thank you for reassuring input!
Love my 05 limited and same color. Up grade on the wheels and levelled the front only because, I needed new tires. New stereo because it went out and new head lights. No mechanical issues.
Traded my son for his 05 SR5. Has 225k, and seems to have no lsd? Gunna FIXERUP! LIFT, LSD, and 285/17's.( i already own the tires..wouldn't fit mama's GX470. Going to Baja! ;)
I have driven Toyotas all my life, and owned a 2000 Tundra for 57,000 miles. I don't know exactly what it was about it, but that truck was the only Toyota I have owned that I really did not like. No problems with it, except constant problems with the rear brakes warping and pulsing. I just did not like driving it. Probably my own fault, as I was used to smaller Toyotas and bought a full-sized Tundra when I probably did not need such a large truck. But I was glad to sell it at 57K miles, when I usually drive my Toyotas over 200K.
I’ve got an 03 4runner with the 4.7 L. Put a magnaflow cat-back exhaust on it. Magnaflow mufflers are the perfect balance IMO. Sounds normal/no drone at idle and cruising speeds/rpms so it isn’t obnoxiously loud all the time. But when you get on it, it roars and has a more “refined” (for lack of a better term) roar than a flowmaster.
Mine is a'06 SR5. I've driven a lot of pickups, working for various construction companies over the years. 1st gen tundra is the best I've driven. Note: get the timing belt changed every 80k-100k. Don't put off doing it.
Found a 2003 w/ 167k miles on it, in Cali. In great condition. $7500... Good deal or nah ? I would LOVE to have it for a while and put 100k miles on it.. Would be a weekend thing, have dirtbikes + mountainbikes...not gonna be my daily.
2004 is the best year. I wish I could put a picture of mine. 4.7 with a cold air intake air raid. I have a gold color with black brush guard on the front and brush guards on the tail lights. Mine drives like a Cadillac . So smooth. It is a double cab . I loved the 275/75/R17. Cant find them anymore. So I have 265-65-17 I want to go to 285-70-17 I wish it had more towing power though. The new 2022 Tundra with the v-6 twin turbo is my dream truck
I’m not even into trucks and I loved your video. I cool that you can roll down that back window! I hope you can somehow fit a 10 inch screen in there later on
Use a wax for rust protection (like GM puts on their truck frames) . Do NOT use undercoating. Undercoating will simply hold moisture and cover up the rust. I think these are great looking trucks.
I just bought mine the bed was rhino lined and under also had been spread hopefully it’s not what I’m thinking now but hopefully I can find out how to get it off and replace it right. Any ideas
These trucks are awesome. I recently bought one from a guy who was the truck's original owner and he was visibly sad to let it go, even though he had purchased a 2019 tundra. That says a lot about how great these trucks are.
Did you hear yourself? "The tires rub a little bit, but that doesn't seem to really bother me all that much" "The only real problem i find is that this truck has horrible turn radius" Hmm I wonder why 🤔 🧐
I have a 2006 metallic blue double cab leveled with a matching shell. We were looking for a double cab truck with a six foot bed and found a pretty good deal. We bought it a couple years ago with 198,000 miles on it. Has 225,000 now and still runs great. You're right about it not being the best at any thing other than reliability. Engine is still going strong and not consuming any oil. I haven't owned any newer trucks but this is the best truck I've had.
TRUCK LOOKS NICE, I own the 06 DC 4X4.... MINES AN SR5 and purchased the woodgrain setup and looks 10 times better. (I'm 40 I like woodgrain) Also, mine came with courtesy glass which was awesome because I don't have to tint it..... drive the piss outta it.
Cool review. I've got big love for the 1st gens... My truck is a 02' TRD, SR5 4wd, 4spd At. AC cab. -Newer fullsize trucks have turned into pigs anymore and cost as much as a House literally... -Toyota had the right formula with the 1stgentundra...imo! Won't let my truck Go...
Nice review. I agree with pretty much everything you said. I have the same exact truck color and all. I bought it brand new 11/04. I’ve got 361,000 mi on it and haven’t had a single issue. I do take good care of her of course. It does everything I need it to do so I do plan on keeping it long, long term.
Just bought mine a week ago, 05' has 170,000. It's not 4wd and the back window motor is out. I wasn't looking for this type of truck but I believe it was a good deal. Paid $3,500.
I’M FINALY IN THE CLUB!😱 Just got my 1st, 1st gen Tundy and I LOVE IT! Had it about 2 weeks and I couldn’t be more happy. 12K for an 04’ with 140K mls. Mostly garage kept, solid rust free frame, never worked out of Limited Ed. By the way apparently there were limited ed’s that had cloth interiors cause mine does. Also, it doesn’t have the faux wood trim. It’s 2wd which is the only thing resembling a downside but given where I live I’ll only regret it a couple times every 5 years or so. It’s worth that for the less hassle of 4wd drive issues and maintenance. Anyway, I’m looking forward to adopting some of the mods you’ve done plus a cold air intake and magnaflow dual exhaust. One of your comments seemed to imply that act may compromise the engine’s longevity or reliability…do you feel that’s the case?
No what i meant is the engine is solid and super reliable, i don't want to come promise that in any way so I'm not modifying it mechanically. Sounds like you did good! You will love it
Went from a T100 to an 06 DC Tundra. Both solid trucks. I just did an HID projector retrofit since the headlights were dim. Just love it even more. Good vid, love seeing what others do to their 1st gens.
I love the look of these Tundras personally, the front reminds me of older trucks from the 30's - 50's era. Maybe that's just me & my overactive imagination. Had a 2003 Tundra that I sold a year ago, looking for another one 2004 - 2006 double cab this time.
Bought my 05 double cab in 07 with 23k miles. just hit 180k, I've probably spent about 3500 in parts on it since then, everything that's broken was the usual things that break on them. steering rack, radiator, secondary air pump...I'm in the northeast.....luckily my frame is not rottted. Floor of the bed has some holes, really the only complaint I have in 15 years of ownership.....When it gets too bad I'll buy a new bed from the south and hopefully get another 15 years and 180k miles out of her. No doubt in my mind that this truck is a better vehicle than anyone I know has had. And I have no doubt that it'll last as long as I wish to take care of it.
I was talking to a Toyota tech and he told me they actually did a ton of full frame replacements at the dealership back in the day... Maybe this truck was a benefiary.
These Tundra's have the 4.7 engines and are bulletproof as long as you take care of them. If you google a million-mile Tundra it has the same 4.7 engine. How many trucks can you say have reached a million miles? I believe these are the best trucks money can buy and I would take the 1st gen Tundra any day over the newer ones. You got yourself a gem buddy, especially with such low miles and condition. I would keep that truck forever!
I just picked up a 2006 tundra sr5 4x4 with 142k. I traded my 2003 tacoma prerunner TRD off road crewcab with 160k miles for it. They offered me a 12k for my tacoma and the tundra was 15,5k..so technically I paid 3.5k for my tundra 4x4. Lol . I absolutely love this generation 1st gen...
I got a 06 but sadly it has rusted frames but its still recoverable so hopefully one of these weekends I'll fix it but other but that its a amazing truck and i cant wait to mod it
I wish I would've bought a used one of these in 2016. I bought a new limited and here's the things I like better about the older one. A nice full-size bed rather than the 5.5ft sardine can. Front captains chairs in the older ones are way more comfortable than the hard un-bolstered seats in the new tundra. The older ones also have a normal Toyota lug pattern instead of the oddball 5x150 on the new one, so there's way more wheel options for the older one and way more used available.
I have a 2015 and just bought another 2006. I think the build quality is better. The newer ones are nicer based on the amenities but definitely cheaper built.
try 255/80r17 tires. 33x10r17. also a trd supercharger. i have heard that some tundras came with a supercharger and were getting 300,000 miles on them. nice truck! just got my first crew cab. there huge compared to the A/C
I think the superchargers were only available on the non-VVT engines. I have HEARD but cannot verify that the connecting rods in the VVT engines are too weak for forced induction.
Great video...thanks for the info...I recently picked up an ‘04 DC. I want to lift it but I want to maintain factory rake. Would you recommend adding a 1” or 1.5” block to the rear to make that happen? Can the 5100s keep up with that extra lift in the rear? Also any thoughts on the Camburg UCAs vs SPC?? Specifically, any downsides to the exposed uniball? Thanks in advance!!
@GarageTopics-- I'm a bit confused by your turning ratio thoughts on these Tundras. My current truck is from Colorado, also an 2005-- Access Cab 4x4 TRD & the turning ratio is great. In fact a Tundra enthusiast, a buddy of mine said the Tundra turning ratio is one of the best, as he understood it. To be fair now, I am comparing it to the ratio of trucks, specifically, those I've owned, but just trucks, not cars. I've taken my truck over the continental divide/ & many other places & have never had turning issues in the tightest spots. If you're comparing it strictly to that of cars, well my last 3-4 vehicles were trucks so.. Im not sure about comparing it to cars. The thing you said on rust is quite scary, that's something I never took into consideration. I hope mine doesn't have to much. How do you gauge the rust to determine whats to much? after owning my for 8 years, I love it & hope to keep it or replace it with the same type with less miles. Still my miles just turned over to 140K, which for a 15 yr old truck, that's great. Id buy another if I could find a good one.
Just bought a first gen Sequoia, 230,000km, mechanically it's in great shape, it had a cracked front bumper, a bent hood, warped front rotors lol, so I got it for 3700 CAD, I have just about everything fixed now, fucking love it.
I just checked out a 2006 XPS edition with 170,000 miles. Advertised on Craigslist in excellent condition for $11,900. Looked underneath, the frame was painted black and rust crumbling in my hands. Why does Toyota have this issue? Supposedly a Florida truck all it's life. So many scammers out there. Thanks for the video
There’s a 2000 tundra v8 ext cab 4wd with 213k miles, got some rust on the box on the pass side. For FIFTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS. Really makes me wonder what’s wrong with it......frame? Can’t think of anything else
I HAVE THE SAME ONE BUT BEAUTIFUL BLUE WITH 090,000 MILES WITH HEATERS WITH DOUBLE MUFFLER WITH 2.5 INCHES LIFTS ON RANCHO SUSPENSION 🙏 I LIKE 👍 THAT ONE YOU HAVE LOOKS NICE 👍🙏🇺🇸🇮🇪🇮🇹🇪🇸🇩🇴🇲🇽🇵🇷🇬🇧💜
I own 3 Toyotas. An 89 22re/5spd 1st Gen 4Runner, a 95 4Runner with a solid-axle-swap and a JDM sourced Turbo-diesel and full OME suspension and E-lockers and an 06 DC Tundra with the 4.7 VVTi engine. I love my 4Runners for trail work and the Turbo Diesel is amazing for road/overland trips but the Tundra is BY FAR the most comfortable and least fatiguing vehicle I own. 800miles put and back to our property in Idaho loaded to the gills... no worries. I just wish it got the milage my 1KZ-TE gets. The 4.7 barely turns 2K RPM cruising at 70mph and yet Im still only getting 18-19mpg on long hauls and 13mpg on average in daily driving to/from work (lots of rush hour bullshit traffic). Love my Tundra. Super glad I bought it.
Awesome video. What screen did you get and what size would you recommend? Was it easy to fit it yourself? Thinking of getting one of these next month. Thank you.
I got a 2006 tundra with a v6 and its an access cab it was pretty ugly(many dents and broken bumpers, really bad paint) when i got it but the drivetrain is good and frame is perfect. Its got 254000 miles but i really like it. Anybody else have this with a v6?
1st Gen. 04 Tundra Limited Ed. Offset tires, drill/ slotted rotors. new Red caliper, its an awesome reliable truck. I can roll ALL my windows down during the Hot days, while these brand new truck could only open a tiny window in the back.
Its hard to find a better overall truck than either the 1st gen tundras or tacomas, theyre just fabulous trucks.

I've got the first gen tundy. And I will keep it till it dies, rebuild it, and keep it going. Definitely a Toyota guy for the rest of time!
I've got a first gen tundy too. Amen to that brother. What modifications have you made to yours?

If you do a good job with the paint I see no issue here. Almost all of the rust comes from the insides of these frames
How much did it cost before mods? Trying to see if it’s affordable for me. Thanks

Enjoy, have 160k on mine. Starts and drives like the day I bought it in 04.
Wow you got got lucky finding this Tundra!!! Very clean.
If the wood is similar to Lexus then you can use a heat gun and peal it off and it reveals a nice black plastic finish underneath.
Going to try this!!! Thank you.
May have been a dud or that in 2000 that was early for the tundra may have had a few bugs
Own one too, i love it, i also wanted one for awhile..... bought it used
JESUS CHRIST that engine can roar 😳 blew my mind. It sounds DAMN AMAZING!!!
Bro and if u inside of the truck 😍
Mine got done at 98k 😎
Found a 2003 w/ 167k miles on it, in Cali. In great condition. $7500... Good deal or nah ? I would LOVE to have it for a while and put 100k miles on it.. Would be a weekend thing, have dirtbikes + mountainbikes...not gonna be my daily.
Got the same truck same color and wheels 4x4 double cab limited. Love this truck.
That truck is brand new. I have 140k and it still feels new
2004 is the best year. So I have 265-65-17
I want to go to 285-70-17 I wish it had more towing power though. The new 2022 Tundra with the v-6 twin turbo is my dream truck
I’m not even into trucks and I loved your video. I cool that you can roll down that back window! I hope you can somehow fit a 10 inch screen in there later on
a Mercury back window is cool ;)
Use a wax for rust protection (like GM puts on their truck frames) . Do NOT use undercoating. Undercoating will simply hold moisture and cover up the rust. I think these are great looking trucks.
I just bought mine the bed was rhino lined and under also had been spread hopefully it’s not what I’m thinking now but hopefully I can find out how to get it off and replace it right. Any ideas
Hunter Dupuis Congrats on the truck. I would scrape it off in a few areas to check for rust and probably just apply some spray wax over it.
Looking to get myself an 05-06 tundra . Hard to find but soon enough. Great video feller
Thanks! I was looking for a few months I'm sure one will pop up for you!
These trucks are awesome. I recently bought one from a guy who was the truck's original owner and he was visibly sad to let it go, even though he had purchased a 2019 tundra. That says a lot about how great these trucks are.
They are for sure super solid, I still love mine
Did you hear yourself?
"The tires rub a little bit, but that doesn't seem to really bother me all that much"
"The only real problem i find is that this truck has horrible turn radius"
Hmm I wonder why 🤔 🧐
Even then I own a 04 double cab and I would say that the new gen tundra turns a lot better
Bought my 02 access cab with 104K miles from South Alabama and it still drives amazing but the clear coat is peeling off
I liked how you threw yourself back into the seat when you stomped on it..😆
I have a 2006 metallic blue double cab leveled with a matching shell.
My tundra has 4088878 miles and is as good as new
@michael lowry GOD BLESS YOU SIR. I have a little than less than half your mileage on my 1995 Tacoma.
Whats your secret? ANY tips?
Nice review. I agree with pretty much everything you said. I have the same exact truck color and all. I bought it brand new 11/04. I’ve got 361,000 mi on it and haven’t had a single issue. I do take good care of her of course. It does everything I need it to do so I do plan on keeping it long, long term.
I have a 2005 original owner. 233k miles
Nothing but oil changes and tires....true work horse
love my 2000 super charged tundra , put headers on it too. only have 154,000 miles on it.
Was your charger from the factory? Do you have any info or where to look for a super charger for 1st gen..?Thanks!
Where the hell is this accent from? New Foundland?
Just bought mine a week ago, 05' has 170,000. It's not 4wd and the back window motor is out. I wasn't looking for this type of truck but I believe it was a good deal. Paid $3,500.
That is most definitely a good deal!
Thanks man! HID retrofit is in the works in the future for mine as well
I love the look of these Tundras personally, the front reminds me of older trucks from the 30's - 50's era. Maybe that's just me & my overactive imagination. Had a 2003 Tundra that I sold a year ago, looking for another one 2004 - 2006 double cab this time.
Any first gen owner first thing we get is frame rust and lbj flashback but thank god I live in the south😂
I’ve got a 4x4 ram limited and a 2wd tundra base. I want to build an overland truck and am leaning toward the tundy, thoughts?
I’m on the look out for a clean 2006 Tundra
Good to know. Just bought a 2007 tundra double cab. Older but super comfy to sit and ride in
I have a 2015 and just bought another 2006.
I thought the superchargers were only for the 00 to 04 Tundras?
Tundras are the bang for the bucks 👍👍✌️
I’m looking into Sequoias & Tundras 1st & 2nd gens
Appreciate the videos/info keep ‘em coming
Beautiful truck. I have 126k miles on my 06 and it still runs fantastic.
Thanks man! That's low miles as far as I'm concerned
There’s a 2000 tundra v8 ext cab 4wd with 213k miles, got some rust on the box on the pass side. For FIFTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS. Really makes me wonder what’s wrong with it......frame? Can’t think of anything else
Great truck man! Looks killer. 🤙🏼
Thanks man!
I absolutely love my 05 Tundra.😎👍
I own the same exact truck but in green.
Just bought my first tundra, 2006 limited, 4wd
I still loved you in the Malibu gbody.
Timing belt (and water pump) @ 90,000 miles.........might be a little more important than your 'Bilsteins'
He never said he was putting it off.
This right here. It's an interference motor so this needs to be done.
1st Gen. 04 Tundra Limited Ed. Offset tires, drill/ slotted rotors. new Red caliper, its an awesome reliable truck. I can roll ALL my windows down during the Hot days, while these brand new truck could only open a tiny window in the back.
