Absolutely fascinating! This video perfectly captures the complexity of World War I and its far-reaching consequences throughout the 1920s and the Great Depression. The way it connects global events from 1914 to 1945 gives an incredible perspective on how this era shaped the modern world. Looking forward to more episodes in this amazing megadocumentary series!

I am always down to watch something, anything about the Great War. While yes, the Second World War was larger by many metrics and saw incredible horrors, but the First World War, despite as much attention as it gets, I would say that it is painfully overshadowed.
People don't realize just how much the Great War and its conclusion would decide our fate throughout the 20th and now 21st century. There is a lot that goes into the making of the war, far beyond an assassination, otherwise we would have seen similar outcomes more frequently as the Archduke assassination wasn't exactly a new event in Europe - especially when considering the Austro-Hungarian Emperor hardly cared on a personal level when it came to the Archdukes assassination.
One of the great tragic ironies of history was that it was Archduke Franz Ferdinand who actually was significantly less conservative than the Emperor, who was of course of another era altogether. The Archduke actually wanted to turn Austria-Hungary into more of a federation, a United States of Austria, giving state and equal power to the various groups that made up the empire. While yes, many wanted to either break away to form their own nation or to join Serbia, but if instead such a shift had occurred in the empire earlier, they likely would have avoided such internal strife.
The First World War definitely is full of a lot of "what if" moments that are hard not to contemplate such as above. What if Germany, instead of striking through Belgium and Luxembourg to get through France to strike Paris, which would seal Britain having to also come in as Belgium's neutrality was of course guaranteed by the United Kingdom, much like France and Germany. So if instead, especially with how much on the Western Front the war would largely be the advantage of the defender, if Germany had put up a strong defensive line up along France. Instead of striking France at all, maintain a defensive war, trying to organize with Austria-Hungary, and later the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria, to focus on Russia.
Of course this is with hindsight, but it wasn't anything unreasonable to assume as it was not only why Bismarck worked incredibly hard to try and avoid Germany being surrounded on both sides by enemies to avoid even being left in such a position. Their plan prior to the Schlieffen Plan was to actually strike east and hit Russia, because while they are large in terms of manpower, they are nowhere near as well trained, well equipped, nor are they as easily brought together making striking Russia time-sensitive.
Considering Russia by 1917 would come to an end, leading to the rise of the Soviet Union, and that was with Germany adding enemies along the way to Paris, bringing in conflict in Belgium, bringing in the United Kingdom and her Empire. Avoiding going west, but specifically avoiding anything that might increase that frontline in the west, putting additional pressure on Germany. If instead they did largely focus on going east, the Ottoman's and Bulgarian's may even have been more willing to join earlier as the potential gain was all too clear, potentially even leaving other nations more willing to trade or even align with the Central Powers. Heck, in this circumstance Italy may even decide to join alongside Germany and Austria-Hungary.
In this situation, especially if the British play little to no role in the war, would radically decrease the odds of the American's ever feeling a need to get involved in the war. If the Central Powers found themselves fighting a defensive war against France, driving the spear through the Russian Empire, would likely see France more willing to accept peace terms to avoid any serious engagement between them and the Central Powers, without the aid of the once Russian Empire. In this world, the Central Powers would radically reshape the way that Europe would be shaped, and the outcomes as a result. I think there is a possible world where the Central Powers realistically won the war. Yes, goals would need to shift, and beef with France would have to be let go rather than acted on, but it would leave an industrial German Empire that would sit at the big table when it comes to global affairs.
France, the sole survivor of this Great War would not be in a similar position to try and strike back later on, unless circumstances in the Central Powers shifted radically, especially as it wouldn't be as easy to rally the French people as it wouldn't be as though Germany had tore up France as they did in our timeline, leading to great French losses. So the 20th century would likely play out in an altogether different fashion so much so that it becomes incredibly difficult to try and predict the next hundred years and what the world would look like today.
Finally I will say this, one of the lessons of the Great War, that we of course did not learn and would all actively avoid learning said lesson which is that when a majority of the worlds nations and people come together, coordinating and working together, then there is virtually no power that would be in a position to cause global conflict. We then sort of learned the lesson after the Second World War, more as a necessity out of fear of the Soviet Union during the Cold War which would lead to the formation of NATO. The wake of the Second World War would also see the formation of what would eventually become the European Union but the struggles of the modern era requires so much more. The supposed "western order" isn't half as united as we should be. One people, around the world, Something such as Russia invading its neighbours such as Georgia and Ukraine should be the sort of thing that if not prevented, is immediately squashed.

8:14 The Schlieffen Plan had Germany invading France through Belgium and Luxembourg not the Netherlands. Dutch neutrality was never violated during WW1 by Germany. The original Schlieffen Plan (1905) included a wide flanking movement that would pass through the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Helmuth von Moltke's Revision (1911) significantly altered the original plan. One of the key changes was the decision to spare the Netherlands from invasion. Moltke likely did this to preserve Dutch neutrality and avoid complicating Germany's diplomatic position, as maintaining a neutral Netherlands would prevent further economic and political isolation.

Which it sounds like what you are doing online. Which is a good start. When information from one site backs up another site, and so on and so on. You will get a better picture. Far from being "laissez-faire," Hoover was a proto-New Dealer with his interventionist economic policies (tariffs, public works, price controls, subsidies).
FDR merely took Hoover's bad ideas and doubled down on them -- prolonging and deepening the Great Depression.
Had WW2 not reduced European and Japanese industry to rubble -- leaving American industry the only game in town for a solid 12 or 15 years -- the Roosevelt Recession would have dragged on well into the 1960s.

The Ottoman victory in Gallipoli was a historic, heroic accomplishment and was the major cause of the crumbling of the French and British Empires? Keep smoking whatever it you're smoking otherwise the patriotic haze that clouds your vision could dissapate.
The Allied battle plan was was far too complicated for the communications of the time. If every action Churchill planned had actually been successful and kept to the timetable the attack could have been successful. Maybe. But there were too many moving pieces in an age of unreliable communications and, according to Churchill, the naval commanders did not believe in the plan and did not attack with sufficient vigor.
As to the Anzacs that are still in Gallipoli? The Turks had the advantages of terrain and very short lines of supply and communications. The Turks had plenty of ammunition, particularly for their machine guns. Gallipoli was no different from the Western Front in that the Allied generals were idiots who were wedded to an obsolete strategy that failed for four years but like an addict that can't rise above his addiction the Allied generals simply couldn't accept that charges into entrenched machine guns was doomed to failure. Plus Gallipoli was just a sideshow and nothing more. If the Allies had devoted enough resources and worked out the necessary communications issues to allow accurate placing of large caliber naval shells then the emplaced Turkish machine guns as well as 100m long sections of their trenches could have been annihilated. When none of the initial objectives were achieved the operation should have been canceled but the British higher ups simply refused to accept the inevitable and kept wasting more Anzac blood.
Gallipoli did cause a small early breach in the shell of the British Empire but it was the rise of socialist political power in Britain and France plus the meddling of the Soviet Union in the post-WW2 years that were far more important in the crumbling of the British and French Empires.
