  • First of all I want to say I am sorry these videos are getting so long!
But when editing them it brought back such fun memories that I just couldn't make myself cut very much out. I have been enjoying watching these videos over and over. I would guess that, you would have to be a person that has either rode these BDRs or wants to ride these BDRs for you to understand this.
In this video I am still on section 1 of the MABDR, which is 138 miles long. But when recording a lot of it and making my way through the mountains it makes for a long video.
I am enjoying this route so much, the weather is beautiful, the scenery is beautiful, the seclusion I really enjoy. Everything is going great until....... I get to some horrible deep very loose gravel. and that is when things go wrong!
Motorcycles and deep loose gravel do not mix very well. But in my defense if I would have been on a bike with good suspension, I probably would have been able to avoid this. Shame on you Honda for selling something like this that can hurt or kill people. 😡
I have been seeing hunters off and on throughout this route up in the mountains, I thought by the looks of the dogs that they were Coon hunters. But I later found out that they are hunting Black Bears, 🐻 which might be why I didn't see any Black Bears...... But I was also in deep concentration trying to stay afloat on the very deep loose gravel.
Watch till the end to see what happens. 🧐
    Thank you for watching.

Thank you! Yes everyone I met was friendly too! But being my first time riding a BDR I was a little nervous about being in the middle of nowhere by myself.
I plan on finishing it this summer.

Where’s your hand guards? I recommend getting the triple tree mounts for them if you decide to install them. I had my Zeta hand guards mounted to and from my Protaper handlebars at first, but after dropping it a few times I finally went to the triple tree mounts, and that offers a substantial amount of protection to the upper portion of the bike, not to mention saving my hands in the woods. And you no longer will have to readjust everything every time the bike falls over.
Also, the lower style crash bars work best on this bike. Like I said, properly mounted hand guards protects the upper portion. I’ve dropped my bike numerous times, and all my body work is still in excellent shape. Also, the crash bars that protect the lower faring on the Rally protect the gear shifter (foot lever) from getting jammed into the ground, which can cause internal gear damage. If you check out “wheeled geezers” channel, you’ll see where he had to pull the crank case apart on the 300l to repair a jammed gear, simply from the bike falling over on pavement at a complete stop.
Check out the video that demonstrates “the Saxton technique” for lifting adventure bikes. It’s the easiest way that I have found to lift the bike with the assistance of a lightweight climbing harness from Amazon. If you have trouble finding the video let me know and I’ll try and provide a link.

Thank you so much for all the info! I do have handguards but haven't installed them yet. I do have them installed on Baby bike and my grandson has dropped it once with no damage.
I have been waiting because I can't decide if I want new handlebars. Everyone says the stock ones bend easily but I have dropped the bike 4 times now and they are fine. I also have heated grips but again waiting to see what I am going to do about the handle bars. I would like to know what lower crash guards you have. I would like to install those on both my bikes. Hopefully all this will be done by spring including new suspension.
I will look for the information on picking the bike up, I already have a climbing belt, so that sounds interesting.
I think having the rear bag brackets really helped with not having damage to the bike when I dropped it. It just scratched the vinyl a little and I think that was because I dragged the bike around in the gravel trying to get the front wheel down hill.
I did watch the video of the wheeled geezers so I bought a tusk soft shifter so it would bend instead of doing damage to the motor, but I never dropped it on that side. It would always spring up like a pogo stick and go to the right.
      Thank you again!

@@Adventureswithmeme the only reason I replaced my handlebars was to get the CR High bends, which you also have to use risers with in order to mount them, so the combination of the high bend, and the risers, brought the handlebars closer to me, which felt ergonomically friendlier to me. I know that the steel handlebars on my Honda 4wheeler bent easy, because I was able to bend them back into place fairly easily just by hand after they bent on me from rolling it over.
But mounting the hand guards to the triple tree like I was talking about helps to stiffen everything up, and that may even help prevent stock handlebars from bending... I wish I had heated grips, but I would only need them for about one month out of the year since I live in Louisiana. I do plan on taking on the Trans America Trail, so perhaps I’ll get some for that.
I bet those rear luggage racks do protect the rear end of your bike. That’s a nice feature...
My crash bars were fairly inexpensive, and easy to install. It took me about an hour. I actually got the recommendation from MfrOffroad Rider’s channel. We bought our Ralllys about the same time, and the crash bars we bought are sold on both eBay and Amazon, and they cost $199.99 at the time, and the brand name was Locomotive.
As far as suspension goes, MfrOffroad Rider just replaced the spring on his shock, and he likes it. I personally went with an entirely new shock from K-Tech suspension. I chose K-Tech because they offer a short version of the stock shock which is 1 inch shorter than stock, because I am somewhat vertically challenged at 5’8”. Also I got the seat concepts low pro seat, which also helped. Not to mention that it’s extremely more comfortable than that stock seat...
Now that I have been riding my Rally for 2 years now, I’ve become way more comfortable with the height, and if I had to do it all over again, I would go with the standard height seat from seat concepts, because they say that it’s even more comfortable.
I have a stiffer spring for my front suspension, that also came from K-Tech, but I have not gotten around to installing it yet.
But I definitely have No regrets with any of my upgrades. Other than those hand guard mounts that I had initially installed to the handlebars. I knew about the triple tree mounts when I first installed the new bars and hand guards, but I couldn’t get the triple tree mounts at that time because they were sold out everywhere.

      @airadaimagery692
I am not familiar with the triple tree mounts, do you have a link?
The person that's supposed to put my suspension on wants to go with Race-Tech. I think it's going to be expensive.
      Your handlebars sound nice.
Thank you again for the information.

@@Adventureswithmeme I will see if I can find a link for the triple tree mounts.
I paid about $650 for the rear shock on my bike, and it was really easy to install. And I paid less than $200 for the front spring and new oil for it. I just haven’t gotten around to installing the front spring yet, not because I believe it’s difficult, but I know it will be a bit more time consuming.
I’m sure Race Tech is just as good components as K-Tech if not better, but I hear of a lot of people spending $1500+ on suspension, but I just couldn’t justify spending that much.
The only difference that I see in the more expensive suspension components, vs the parts that I chose, is that the more expensive stuff is even more adjustable, and easy to do. Which I’m sure is nice for when you’re not on long tours carrying all the extra weight, you can adjust your suspension perfectly for the weight that you are carrying at the moment...
With my rear shock, I can adjust it, but I have to use a tool to do so, whereas the more expensive kits can be adjusted at a push of a button.
With my new front suspension, it still won’t be adjustable at all, just like the stock suspension, but it will be a little bit stiffer, which is all that I’m looking for. The more expensive front suspension, most likely is adjustable, and easy to do...
I hope I’m not making this sound more confusing than it needs to be. If so, I do apologize!
I’ll look for that link to the triple tree mounts...

@@Adventureswithmeme the listing on eBay that I bought my triple tree mounts from ended, because they sold out of them. But the company CRF’s Only carries them, and they are called Zeta Handguard Front Mounts.
If you google an image of it, you will see how the mounts attach the hand guards to your front forks, and that prevents the hand guards from rotating on your handlebars in a crash, which happens with the more traditional type mounts. You’ll see a picture of it...
Also, I just noticed that Race Tech sells the same kind of front spring upgrade like the K-Tech one that I have, the non-adjustable type, and it is only $129... I’m sure both companies offer the budget version, as well as the premium, adjustable one. I would think anyway...

Good on you for taking the time to record this! A group of us are going to do this ride at the end of May. Did you have any problems finding a hotel? Or should we plan on a few nights of camping? Im riding from Texas to Americade then MABDR so it will be about 5,000 miles for me. You should not be ridding this alone ESPECIALLY if you cant pick the bike up unloaded.

      Thank you Jeremy!
I didn't have any trouble finding a motel, but If I were you I would definitely be prepared in case you needed to camp. I camped one night at Brandywine campground. It was a very nice campground and only $10 if you have the National Park pass, $20 if you don't.
You are correct I should not have done this alone, but if you have no one to go with what other choice do you have?
I couldn't pick up my bike because I had an injury to my ribs.
I hope you have a wonderful time!
I made it through to most of section 3.
      It is beautiful country!

😊 There was another place that I went the wrong way, it was a steep rough drive and when I saw the private property sign I was already committed. I was afraid to stop and turn around for fear of dropping my bike. At the top the homeowner was giving me hand signals to turn around, which I was planning to do.... Woops!
