I was born and grew up in the shadow of the old GCHQ complex that consisted of concrete buildings and nissen huts & was fascinated by the work that was done there. Not long before the Doughnut was built to replace the old buildings, I was fortunate to be given clearance to visit an open night. Ninety nine point nine percent of the facility was off limits so I came away knowing as much as I did before ------ absolutely nothing 😂. Such are the levels of security & for that, I'm extremely grateful.
Thanks for the interview Times Radio, much enjoyed.

1969, the year I came out of the Royal Signals and started work at GCHQ, my mentor was Jack French, we all know his name. I was given early retirement and live in comfort up Leckhampton hill. Circa Cito.

Diversity can be people of varied backgrounds with understandings of the mentality of various people. To a certain degree you need empathy for subtle differences within people groups. Your personal loyalties can never be in doubt. Spies need the understandings of a T E Lawrence without losing focus of goals as he did.
For example, my analysis of US involvement in Afghanistan. I started with the statement getting into Afghanistan has never been a superpower problem. The problem is getting out of Afghanistan with a tangible victory. I suggestion was 1/3 of planning should be getting in and 2/3s in planning getting out. I also suggested NOT creating a European style democracy. My suggestion was to created a Afghan Council like GEN Massaud used to unite Afghanistan’s various subgroups to fight the Russians. This would have allowed local tribal governance styles, while maintaining an overall national government. This concept probably never made it past Division review.
