Is the earth spherical or flat? Airlines tell us the answer

  • Expected travel times between airports would be very different if we lived on a flat earth. For example, flying from Sydney, Australia to Santiago, Chile would be around 22 hours, if it were even possible. Surely it would take much longer than flying from Sydney to Los Angeles, right?

About 2 years ago a flight from tokyo to los Angeles had to make an emergency landing in Alaska on a flat earth map it's easy to see why because the flight route goes over alaska from tokyo to los Angeles. On a globe that flight route would be thousands of unnecessary miles out the way.

    • @AndrewGatt

On a globe, it's just as easy to explain. Here's the straight line path on a globe between Los Angeles and Tokyo, along with a straight line connecting Los Angeles and Cold Bay, Alaska, where some trans-Pacific flights land in emergencies. i.ibb.co/tcqnNW5/Capture-2021-03-09-04-07-08.png As you can see, there's no better option in an emergency than landing in southwest Alaska. Here's an article about one such flight: sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2013/10/30/tokyo-to-sfo-flight-makes-emergency-landing-in-alaska/ Here's a much more interesting article. eugene.kaspersky.com/2015/09/09/the-santiago-sydney-antarctic-smile-qf28/ You'll learn a lot! I promise.

Judging by the three videos you've posted to UA-cam, I'm going to guess that you live in Tanzania. Since you live so close to the equator, all you need to do is keep track of where the sun is in the sky for a whole day and you'll see that it rises in one direction, appears to go straight up to nearly overhead and then straight down in the opposite direction. How can you explain that if you believe that the sun travels in a horizontal circle above a disk even though your eyes tell you that it moves in a vertically oriented circle? Honestly, I can understand how people 4000 years ago believed that we lived on a flat disk and that the sun went under the disk at night, but how can you explain it now, knowing that it's always noon somewhere on the planet? Keep in mind that the apparent size of the sun in the sky does not change during the day. Surely on a flat earth, the sun would be closer to you at noon and would appear larger in the sky, right? None of it makes sense.

Are you saying that they use planes that fly twice as fast when they fly in the Southern Hemisphere, compared to planes in the Northern Hemisphere? If that were the case, an airline could be the speed champion and fly transatlantic flights in half the current time and get a much larger share of the customers. Why wouldn't they do that? The plane speed is set to the destination for time, not for distance traveled over time. Speed is not a constant on flights because of air turbulence and weather patterns and storms. Planes speed up and slow down over the flight. He said it is another reason for arrival delays. Taxiing in the sky is a big issue for the delayed flight arrivals. Cousin, the commercial pilot says, flights going east are traveling into tomorrow and the westward travel is flying into yesterday ...wait I think he may have been kidding around. Yeh he was - kinda he said. Time travel is only possible in that instance when your plane crosses into a different time zone moving your time ahead or back an hour or so. Remember the concord? It flew supersonic and passengers usually got to their destination before they left. Unless they traveled the other direction in which case they arrived about the same time as a commercial plane, but the distance they traveled in the concord is much greater. earth is a globe, aircraft need to pitch down in order to maintain a constant altitude. So, for example, if an airplane makes a flight which covers a 15 degree arc across the earth's surface (which is a distance of about a thousand miles), then the airplane will need to pitch down by 15 degrees over the course of the flight.
However, in order to accomplish this, pilots don't "drop the nose of the plane every couple of minutes". Instead, they watch the altimeter, and raise or lower the nose as needed to maintain a constant altitude, or to climb or descend as necessary. (Or they set the autopilot to do the same thing.) This means that they're adjusting the plane's pitch every couple of seconds, and the adjustments that they use to maintain altitude are much, much larger than the adjustments that would be needed to merely match the curvature of the earth.

I like some conspiracy theories because some make you think. But to me the flat earth theory is the most boring of all of them. Round earth is actually more interesting.

I like that the original Flat Earth Society proponents were deliberately taking a position they didn't believe in, just to make people think it out for themselves. It showed the value of critical thinking. Now, we just have nutjobs and scam artists making money out of a cult.

of course the sphere earth is more interesting because you get to use your imagination to invent new worlds and planets far beyond our understanding of distance and time and go further to imagining that the planets can support life as we know it. Sure, it is loads more fun to live in a fantasy (Science Fiction) world.
disregard that every past civilization back to antiquity had a model of the flat earth. Only in the most recent 1000 years has the thought of the globe earth been widely pushed by academics. Still in the late 1800s and early 1900s schools and colleges in the United States still taught the flat earth. You want interesting ??? the reason for the globe lie is far more interesting than fantasy, because it is true. The conspiracy is to keep you diminished, unimportant, on a spec of dust flying through infinite vacuum of space with a distant or non-existing God. When the truth is you are a highly intellectual and vastly important individual created in the image of God and possessing abilities you cannot fathom because you are in a state of indoctrination which hides that truth from you since birth. You are a spiritual being in a physical body on this plane for a purpose. You are important, our earth is the center of creation. Now, why would someone want to keep you from knowing these truths about your importance? - So you can be controlled. God made us equal, none to rule over the other, but to be fellowshipped with God and one another. Do the leaders of countries have power over you? There are a lot of interesting truths out there for you. Seek them. :)

talking about how boring the flat earth is - have you ever been to the caverns of America and seen how cool and interesting the land beneath your feet actually is? Now, understand that there is an Antarctic Treaty which prevents you from exploring the regions beyond the 60th Southern parallel. Why? Look into it because it is very interesting. Admiral Byrd, explorer, flew to Antarctica and returned with information of land as large or larger than the north America and the resources and beauty of the land is incomparable. If it is there - why are we forbidden to go there? All of these topics are far more interesting than some imaginary chuck of space matter drifting listlessly through a void.

You can prove curvature of the earth by flying in a rocket into space. If you have a problem with NASA, you can see images from any of the satellites from the twelve countries that have launched them (USSR, USA, France, Japan, China, UK, India, Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Iran and North Korea) and one regional organization (the European Space Agency, ESA). You can follow the location of the International Space Station and spot it overhead when the conditions are right (i.e. not the middle of the day when the sky is too bright or the middle of the night when the ISS is in the shadow of the earth, when it passes over your location). See its current location here: www.heavens-above.com/ Its path would not make sense if the earth were flat. It would also take an incredible amount of fuel to keep it moving at 17,000 mph (27,000 km/hr), day after day, year after year.
Maybe you would prefer to see images from further away. Images from GOES satellites are updated at least daily. www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/fulldisk.php?sat=G16
You do rely on weather forecasts, don't you? How do you think NOAA can update satellite images many times per day? Look up geosynchronous orbits.
You want a 100% accurate map of the earth? You should download Google Earth. Directions and distances between locations are all very accurate. If they weren't, a flat earth believer would be able to find instances where they were wrong.
You want gas pressure next to a vacuum? That's not how gases and gravity work. Go to the top of any high mountain and hike around for a while. You'll be able tell that the air pressure is lower without even measuring it. You'll get out of breath quicker than at sea level. Go to the top of Mount Everest (5.5 miles above sea level) and you'll die without supplemental oxygen. Go up in an airplane and insist on opening the window when you get to cruising altitude. Don't let the flight attendants try to talk you out of it. Let me know how that goes. As you go up higher and higher, the air pressure decreases very gradually. The ISS orbits at a height of about 260 miles (420 km), or 47 times higher than the top of Mount Everest. Even at that height it is not a perfect vacuum. That's why the ISS has to burn some fuel to boost its altitude a few times each year. www.heavens-above.com/IssHeight.aspx
I hope this answers some of your questions. You can find out more online if you look in the right places.
