I think India will grow much faster than China, if they get a good infrastructure running. Wich I strongly believe. They have such a jung, creative and energetic population. Let us be realistic, China is far ahead of India economically and infrastructure wise , it will be a long haul for India to catch-up. Militarily in a few areas they are one up but when it comes to military confrontation , India can give bloody nose to them for various reasons.
We are far behind in terms of military too. Not doubting the abilities of our soldiers but in terms of tech, infrastructure, co-ordination between various arms of the military, cyber warfare we are far far behind and there has been extremely slow progress on this. The FINSAS program is something we haven't heard of in years. And given the current governments unwillingness to acknowledge China's occupation in ladakh (while maj general level talks go on) and the introduction of agniveer things look dire. I hope it gets better. PS forgot to mention that we haven't even given good quality helmets to our soldiers yet. The German lady pointed out that the West, at the moment is not sanctioning India, thus it has an economic growth advantage over China. Don’t forget Japan and China were once in a similar position as India. As soon as the West perceives India as a threat, it will also be sanctioned.
That isn't automatically a given. It depends on what India's leadership does. India being a democracy won't be able to take a brazenly anti-West stance (in terms of actions, not words). India isn't and will not be viewed as a threat the same way that China is.

China's economy is growing at 3% to 4% which far better than most Western countries can only dream off. Even though China's manufacturing and construction sectors are struggling, it's high tech and service sectors are exploding with growth and these clowns are saying China collapsing. Unless China's GDP growth rate falls to negative or in total collapse, but if they grow by 4.2% per annum, then India must grow by at least 19.98% to keep the difference of the two countries' GDP gap unchanged at $14.44 trillion. Because China's GDP in 2023 was $17.76 trillion. That's 4.758 times of India's $3.732 trillion. 4.2% X 4.758= 19.98%. Even India's GDP growth rate is at 21% per annum, it will be only $37.5 billion more than China a year. So $14.44t/$37.5b (14440/37.5) =385, even working it out using compound rate, India still needs at least 200 years to catch up with China!

As an Indian, of course we have a long long way to go, and nothing to be taken for granted. If the Indian economy grows at 8% real for the next decade, then we have some heft. We know what happened to Argentina, Japan and possibly China. I think the big difference between India and China is that, Indian politics ultimately is about improving the quality of our lives, more than anything, and that makes peace and prosperity necessary, while the PRC government tells their military "Prepare for War", every single year. People here don't realize that dictatorships always go to war when their internal economy crumbles. Taiwan War may not be as far off as it seems. I think Germany and the EU made historic mistakes by depending on Russia and the PRC. In the short term they saw steep growth, but they could not prevent the Ukraine War and perhaps another debt crisis arising from the Belt and Road initiatives.

My message to fellow Indians- Stop daydreaming that India would ever overtake China's economy. That's not going to happen for a foreseeable future. If india has real and sustainable growth they don't need to worry about catching up with China's massively inflated numbers. That would be like comparing natural muscle growth to a body builder or actor that uses steroid and plastic surgery to achieve what looks like peak fitness.
We don't know if they are inflated. When you look at massive Chinese infrastructure and projects, it does seem to match the numbers. As an Indian, I can tell you, there is reason to worry about our long term prospects (next 25 years to 50 years). The biggest reason I feel is inequality to access the quality education and then the education system itself. The poor education quality in government schools which despite offering much higher (twice or thrice ) salaries to its teachers, are worse off than private schools. The middle class does not trust FREE government schools run by Indian provinces (there are some run by the Central government, maybe just 0.1% or 1%) and sends kids to private schools which have significant fees (perhaps equal to an average of 10-15% of their total income, for 2 kids). And so, in India, usually the kids of the poor and kids of the middle class do not study together(not taking into account the small government mandated quota for poor in private schools). That's about the pre-college education i.e. up to 12th grade. (Grades typically start with -3. We call it Nursery, Lower Kitergarden, Upper Kindergarten before 1st standard). Now coming to college, the government colleges are a preferred choice and have lower fees, and they are usually better than the privately owned ones. But these are not enough and overall there is a big percentage of college graduates in the STEM area who are not employable. And then there is a big percentage which is unemployable because they have a degree in subjects like geography and history or an Indian language and even English language which often cannot give you a job. My point is that very soon the Indian centre and states need to wake up and work together to overhaul the education system otherwise we becoming a healthy economy will remain a pipe dream.

Let us be realistic, China is far ahead of India economically and infrastructure wise , it will be a long haul for India to catch-up. Militarily in a few areas they are one up but when it comes to military confrontation , India can give bloody nose to them for various reasons.
We are far behind in terms of military too. Not doubting the abilities of our soldiers but in terms of tech, infrastructure, co-ordination between various arms of the military, cyber warfare we are far far behind and there has been extremely slow progress on this. The FINSAS program is something we haven't heard of in years. And given the current governments unwillingness to acknowledge China's occupation in ladakh (while maj general level talks go on) and the introduction of agniveer things look dire. I hope it gets better.

Being an Indian, residing in India, I can say that there has been no policy by the govenrment to opress any section of the society like its mentioned here. Unless China's GDP growth rate falls to negative or in total collapse, but if they grow by 4.2% per annum, then India must grow by at least 19.98% to keep the difference of the two countries' GDP gap unchanged at $14.44 trillion. Because China's GDP in 2023 was $17.76 trillion. That's 4.758 times of India's $3.732 trillion. 4.2% X 4.758= 19.98%. Even India's GDP growth rate is at 21% per annum, it will be only $37.5 billion more than China a year. So $14.44t/$37.5b (14440/37.5) =385, even working it out using compound rate, India still needs at least 200 years to catch up with China!

As an Indian, of course we have a long long way to go, and nothing to be taken for granted. If the Indian economy grows at 8% real for the next decade, then we have some heft. We know what happened to Argentina, Japan and possibly China. I think the big difference between India and China is that, Indian politics ultimately is about improving the quality of our lives, more than anything, and that makes peace and prosperity necessary, while the PRC government tells their military "Prepare for War", every single year. People here don't realize that dictatorships always go to war when their internal economy crumbles. Taiwan War may not be as far off as it seems. I think Germany and the EU made historic mistakes by depending on Russia and the PRC. In the short term they saw steep growth, but they could not prevent the Ukraine War and perhaps another debt crisis arising from the Belt and Road initiatives.
A war is needed when old superpowers don’t want to release power to new superpower. Taiwan war is more for the US, which will determine which one will be in charge of Asian affairs. if China wins, China would be free to use labor and natural resources in Asia pacific region, and take advantage of Chinese Yuan hegemony. Chinese people will be much richer like Americans right now.
Remember this: to live rich life, you need to use free labors from other countries as slave. The US uses Chinese people and Mexico and southeast Asian people as cheap labor slaves to support rich life of Americans. We don't know if they are inflated. When you look at massive Chinese infrastructure and projects, it does seem to match the numbers.
As an Indian, I can tell you, there is reason to worry about our long term prospects (next 25 years to 50 years). The biggest reason I feel is inequality to access the quality education and then the education system itself. The poor education quality in government schools which despite offering much higher (twice or thrice ) salaries to its teachers, are worse off than private schools. The middle class does not trust FREE government schools run by Indian provinces (there are some run by the Central government, maybe just 0.1% or 1%) and sends kids to private schools which have significant fees (perhaps equal to an average of 10-15% of their total income, for 2 kids). And so, in India, usually the kids of the poor and kids of the middle class do not study together(not taking into account the small government mandated quota for poor in private schools).
That's about the pre-college education i.e. up to 12th grade. (Grades typically start with -3. We call it Nursery, Lower Kitergarden, Upper Kindergarten before 1st standard).
Now coming to college, the government colleges are a preferred choice and have lower fees, and they are usually better than the privately owned ones. But these are not enough and overall there is a big percentage of college graduates in the STEM area who are not employable. And then there is a big percentage which is unemployable because they have a degree in subjects like geography and history or an Indian language and even English language which often cannot give you a job.
My point is that very soon the Indian centre and states need to wake up and work together to overhaul the education system otherwise we becoming a healthy economy will remain a pipe dream.
