The Band and their last hurrah. A documentary of stars who came and jammed with The Band for their farewell. The Staples made this version legendary.
I'm having the privilege of seeing Mavis Staples & Ziggy Marley this summer with Trombone Shorty. Can't wait!
Its brilliant!
That was Ms Mavis Staples , she can wail.
Yes
there was nobody ever that resembled The Band and their style and sound.
what a great legacy they left us with and all their friends coming in for the Last Waltz Concert
to send them off not the least of which The Staple Singers bringing it like only they could.
Mavis
Miss Mavis is one of those singers that makes you lift your hands to the heavens in appreciation.
These cats were so talented this was a backup band for bob dylan, and became THE BAND. 🤘❤️
Thanks for the info Patrick
@@brandonnshante They were put together in Canada by the legendary Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins over a period of a few years in the late 1950s to early 1960s. It was after they left Ronnie and struck out on their own that they wound up touring with Dylan for a while. Levon Helm actually quit the band when they toured with Dylan and didn't rejoin until months after the tour ended.
The Staple's were really big in the Gospel Music industry.
Two of the most legendary groups overlaying their sounds too create perfection . The Staple family played gospel for their entire life. Pop Staple raised the girls singing. The Band was also a working band that played together for 20 + years under a couple names . That professionalism together with the genuine love of music ❤
The Band and The Staple Singers!!! It doesn't get much better!
The staple singer's songs I'll take you there, Respect yourself and Do it again , a must to listen to.
This takes me back 45 years when I first heard this.
"The Last Waltz", saw the movie and bought the album back in '78.
I was at The Last Waltz
The Last Waltz is something that should be shown in every contemporary music class. For some reason this song has always moved me emotionally, and with the Staples, even more so. The legendary Levon Helm (RIP), the singer/drummer, was the only one from south (Arkansas), the others were all from Canada. The Band's other songs that are a must is "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Cripple Creek".
Don't forget It makes no difference and Stage Fright sung by the late great Rick Danko, or The Shape I'm in sung by the late great Richard Manuel.
I love The Band. This collaboration was just wonderful. It just made the song even better.
We agree!
My good God, I LOVE Pops Staples (and Mavis, too) ! I first saw The Band backing up Ronnie Hawkins at the Brass Rail in London Ontario Canada in the mid 1960’s. As a fellow musician I encountered several members of The Band multiple times and became friendly with Rick Danko and Garth Hudson. Garth is still with us, but I miss Rick and Levon badly!
As a Canadian boy, The Band we’re my Beatles.
Peace
What a great collaboration by The Band and The Staple Singers!!! That is what I call some "Countrified Soul & Gospel" all meshed together!!!
Hands down my favorite version of this song
What a great performance, l believe that was the last time The Band played together......
Oh Wow! 😮
This is from the concert documentary The Last Waltz (1978) directed by Martin Scorsese.
Great show wasn't it, had some great guests ...I had the DVD years back but ex wife scored the lot 😅such is life
@@donaldduck2139 The Staples did not actually appear at the concert, The Weight was recorded at a seperate soundstage with no audience, as was
Emmylou Harris singing Evangaline
@@donaldduck2139 If you google TubiTV and The Last Waltz you can watch the documentary for free.
Love The Band, this documentary, The Last Waltz, and Levon Helm ( drummer, singer, songwriter) R.I.P
At the risk of coming off as a jerk I have to point out that song writing was not one of Levon's many talents.
@@johnlane1206 Nothing wrong with stating a fact. Helm was a hugely talented man who was a superlative drummer, great vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist. He was also a pretty fair actor. The fact that he was not a song writer is just that - a fact. Not a criticism.
From the Last Waltz. Many great songs. Another great song from this concert It Makes No Difference. Listen to many others from this concert
any band would be so honoured to have The Staples join them on stage. Doesn't get much better than this
I love Mavis Staple's voice 😊
I just saw the magnificent Mavis in concert last month!!! Still incredible at 80. ❤
The perfect mix from a bunch of Canadian talent and the Staples family with Levon Helm's great lead voice and drums and southern sound. Excellent forever !
Definitely
I see what you did there Canuck🍁... guess I'd be proud too though. very cool.
It’s Levon
Doesn't get much better than that
RIP Levon, The Band, perfection with Pop Staples there, wonderful..
The little girl I watch sometimes downstairs is 2 she loves this song…Ive been teaching her songs & singing to her since she was born! She pretends to play guitar during this one…& changes her voice for each singer! Priceless! I’ve loved this song since I was little! ✌🏻☀️
That's awesome!
beautifully filmed, recorded and performed!!!!!!
My favorite version of one of my favorite songs of all time 🔥😎🤘🏻
The Staples always seemed to give off country soul vibes for me. Check out the song "Respect Yourself". Our youth needs to hear that one.
Angela, are they still alive?
@@michaelasay8587 As far as I know, Mavis is the only survivor of the family.
Mavis still tours.
Robbie Robertson, the one playing the double neck guitar, passed away today at age 80. There's only one left now & that's the organist. I saw them in concert once (I think 1981), & I have to say it was phenomenal. I always loved them, & the back-up band was called The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, later to be The Dirt Band. They were a pretty awesome group so it was a stellar night. Great reaction guys.
Thanks
On the movie, just after the last note fades, Mavis whispers "Beautiful" into the mic. And it is!
Wow, Didn't know that!
The Band isn't actually country or southern rock. The Band was a Canadian-American rock band formed in Ontario Canada in 1967.
I’d say they’re “ Americana roots rock”. 😊
They sound southern when Levon sings lead. That Arkansas accent is easily noticed.
All the guys in this band were together since 1960. First as The Hawks, then as Levon
and the Hawks.
I listen to the band all the time.
Great reaction. Two legendary groups that have an extensive collection of music that is worth checking out. Much appreciated 🙏
Besides the Staples who are great, they had so many guests, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, so many more
My all time favorite song from my all time favorite band.
The Band is the best there ever was, and Mavis Staples is a force of nature.
I have loved this tune since I first heard it many, many, moons ago. It still gives me goosebumps when Mavis chimes in.
The Band is one of the very best. I love this song, but I feel the same about everything they put out. Levon Helms, the drummer/singer was from Arkansas. This is one reason I am proud to also be from this state.
Such a great song by The Band. And agreat version with the Staples!
We agree, Amanda.
Thx for posting, Levon Helms is an icon.
Music the ultimate communicator. . I love every second of this ..
Great song and version. Check out the Ringo Star and Robbie Robertson version when you can. It's a world colab. 💚🤙
The way all the preformers came together and harmonize together is true talent
Mavis mouthed Beautiful to them at the end . Her voice added so much richness to that song
Yes!!
These guys backed Bob Dylan when he went on his first electric tour in Europe. After Dylan had his motorcycle accident they took up residence near him in upstate New York. While there they formulated their breakout album Music from Big Pink (the color of the house they were renting lol) and collaborated with Dylan on his release The Basement Tapes.
That was played at Woodstock (minus the Staples singers)! That's rock; at the very least Southern rock.
It really isn't thought of as Southern Rock, it is considered more Americana, they were a mix of blues, country and rock. When they first became known no one quite knew what to make of them, they were so different from other groups at that time.
The depth of Mavis Staples voice!!
I wore this cd out on Mavis Staples part❤
4 Canadian guys from Southern Ontario + 1 guy from Arkansas wrote the songs of Americana. Only Robbie Robertson and Garth Hudson are still with us.
The vast majority of the songs were written by Robbie Robertson.
Beautiful ... sing Lord !
I always loved this song but loved 'Cripple Creek' and 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' just that little bit more, they performed both songs on The Last Waltz which this video was off of . . . . HINT HINT 😅😅😅 yes please
😂😂😂
Classic ❤ love this - good memories
Absolute perfection.
I was a kid in the 70's, this music is like going to church for me!
Yes it is.
You guys have the sound levels absolutely perfect! Thank you for a real nice mix! Wonderful song!
Our pleasure!
THE STAPLES SINGERS!!! Check out “Respect Yourself.” The older guy, Pops, is the father. It’s a totally badass family group.
As the song finishes you can hear Mavis Staples whispering "beautiful" and that is just what this is.
"I gotta go, but my friend can stick around".
The Band and The Staple Singers perfect together......Mavis Staples beaitiful soulful voice This tells the story of a guy who visits Nazareth, and is asked by his friend Fanny to visit several of her friends. "The Weight" that is his load are all these strange people he promised he would check on. The song was never a big hit, but it endures as a classic rock staple.
Thank you. I always misunderstood it the other way round - I thought he was inviting Fannie to put her burdens on his shoulders, when in reality, he was that she had put her burdens on his shoulders.
Mavis Staples was a national treasure.
Levon Helms was a fan of The Staples Singers. Mavis brought that church clap because The Staple Singers were a gospel group! Pops Staples singing the verse, Go down Moses was right out the church!
I’m getting strapped in. Haven’t heard this in a while
I love the reaction from the sisters when their father sings.
Great performance by both The Staple Singers and The Band. Almost all of these people are gone now. Only Robbie Robertson (guitar and vocals) is still alive from The Band, and I think only Mavis Staples is living from The Staple Singers. The Staples family grew up singing in the Christian church and were wonderful folks. Papa Staples was real mellow man, but quite a character.
Garth Hudson of The Band is also still alive
Every single time I watch this, I'm reminded what race relations SHOULD be like. I love how they work together and compliment one another and sound great together, and everyone gives everyone else room to be who they are.
You couldn't have said it better.
A song I love by The Staple Singers is I'll Take You There. It helped me get through a bad time more than once.
Thank you for listening, Thank you for your time!❤
Good ole song.
You both said it beautifully, it’s a song about what it really means to be a friend.
Frankie, we 100% agree with you
This whole concert movie was directed by Martin Scorsesse, notice some of the camerawork and movements, some of this looks like Casino
Shante says 'down home music.' Levon Helm born in Turkey Scratch, Ark; the rest of the Band are Canadians so, who wrote this song??? It is a song about American Civil War 1861-1865.
Best classified as Americana music
I don’t know where you found this video but THANK YOU SO MUCH! I Adore both the Staple Singers and The Band! You do know that the great Aretha Franklin covered this song also.
No didn't know that
Movie..Last Watlz..awesome!!!!
So good
Out fucking standing, not one interruption until the song was finished, well done
❤
ya'll just got took tuh church bay buh! Thumbs up great song and reaction!
Ok
❤️❤️❤️
Pops Staples.
The jokes on all of us….The Band is Canadian lol
4/5 ths Canadian
😎THE BAND & THE STAPLE SINGERS😎 Considered the best hippie song of all time!
P.S. MISS MAVIS!!! 😎
Church
If you listen close enough, you will notice a bible message inside each of the words each singer says.
Great name i resemble that name too 🤜🤛.this is such a great song Staple Singers are fire
And yet your BIGGEST smile was when “Pops” (Roebuck Staples) sang “Go down Moses…” 🤷🏻 Saw The Band live twice between 1980 and 1987. Spiritual. Put The Staple Singers in with them and it’s like being in a cathedral on your knees. Church. 👍🏼❤️🫡
Wow look at Mavis . So young . She was really something
I envy you if its the first time hearing this masterpiece
A song about motor cycle races in Nazareth PA. best dirt flat track races in the world!!!!!
A Canadian band and a The Staple singers, who would have thought it?
