That singing drummer is Levon Helm, one of the most insanely talented human beings in history. That of course is my opinion, but there was an incredible amount of talent on that stage right there, that’s undeniable.
I fully agree.
Levon Helm was not only a fine drummer and singer, but he was also an actor. He played the role of Daddy Webb to Sissy Spacek’ as Country Icon Loretta (Webb) Lynn which won her the best actress award for “ The Coal Miners Daughter.
You are far from alone in that belief. Levon Helm was born to to do exactly what he did for us.
Like he said, "I ain't in it for my health."
Actually, it’s Levon Helm and I agree with everything else you said. Saw The Band twice-once with Bob Dylan and again with The Dead and BD and the band.
Whomever decided the put the band and the Staples on the same stage was genius. It's like walking down the street with a jar of peanut butter and someone with a chocolate bar bumps into and it all mixes up and you discover they belong together.
Watch the entire Movie.. It is nuts all teh people that preformed with them that night
That was the tip of the Iceberg for that concert.
Now that's a blast from the past on that old ad campaign for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.
Yummmy... nice description!
Pretty sure the Staples had done a cover of this song on their own. That's why the Band asked them to sing it with them.
Mavis and Pops Staples are national treasures. I can't even describe what Mavis's voice does to me. 💜💚💛✌️
Truth! Pops has the sweetest voice, I could listen to him allllll day! And Mavis is a powerhouse!
I have watched this video and movie several times and every time Mavis starts singing here on "the weight" I get choked up👍😊❤
@@Montyhugo same, my friend. God gave her an extra helping of something special. She moves me EVERY time. 💜💚💛✌️
Sublime....
Amen!!
The Weight | Featuring Ringo Starr and Robbie Robertson | Playing For Change | Song Around The World - recorded 2 years ago on song's 50th anniversary, by various musicians around the world in 5 continents. It's amazing to see and hear on UA-cam.
Check out the Staples singing "Respect Yourself". You'll love it.
Listen to it very carefully at the very end. You can hear Mavis Staples say "beautiful"
I love this channel. BJ has the groove and Asia seems like the girl everyone wants to be best friends with.
Well said.
Ditto
Mavis Staples is still going strong. She sang with Hozier on ‘Nina Cried Power’ a couple years back and it was fire. You guys should check out that song. Two masterful voices delivering a powerful tribute to change makers.
And she did a great album with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco pretty recently! She's a national treasure without a doubt!
The Staples made this song greater. The Band made a lot of these kinds of songs.
This song was already great.
It’s a collaboration with each party bringing something great to the table
The Staples definitely helped to take this song to the next level. When Mavis comes in on that second verse, I get chills every time.
"The Band" was a Canadian-American rock band formed in 1967. They started out as the "Hawks", the backing group for singer Ronnie Hawkins & later they were the back up band for Bob Dylan. Their most popular songs included "The Weight" & "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". But they had a lot of other great songs such as "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)", "The Shape I'm In", "Ophelia", "Up On Cripple Creek", "It Makes No Difference" etc.
🇨🇦❤
🇨🇦
When Robbie asked Ronnie how much he was to get paid,he said not much but you'll get more pussy then Elvis.🇨🇦
@@madmann5373 LOL...Nice
@@northernlight2598 Feel free to claim Chilliwack. They're all yours. 😉
This performance contains an element that helps turn a good performance into an outstanding performance --- joy.
You, my friends, just witnessed rock history and one of the best collaborations ever. The Band had a hit with it and the Staples then made it a hit of their own later. You just saw the best right facing singer/drummer ever!
That's from "The Last Waltz", the great documentary of their final concert in '76 with huge guest stars like Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell & Dr. John. Check out them playing with Van Morrison on his song "Caravan": mind-blowing.
Directed by Martin Scorsese
And of course the main man Bob
@@erickbaltodano401 was just about to post that
@hookstomper7322 Yeah! Van is fantastic on 'Caravan' here.
I was at The Last Waltz but the Staples couldn't make it for the concert but they loved each other and wanted to record this song so they recorded this in front of 250 people and added it to the concert movie. Robbie Robertson wrote most of the songs while the sad songs were written by Richard Manuel
Didn't know that David..thx for that
Another brilliant performance not part of the concert and added to the movie was "Evangeline" with Emmylou Harris
@@jameswiglesworth5004That was early in Emmylous career. An excellent performance.
Is so
Really need to check out the version with Ringo Star and Robbie Robertson. “Playing for a change.” Its artist for around the world another beautiful piece of music/talent. U WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. 🎺🎷🎹👯🕺🏾👀👀👯👯♀️🕺🏾💃🏿👯♂️
Love this collaboration. You gotta check out the song, "I'll Take You There" by the Staple Singers. It's straight up gospel and it was a cross over hit.
Saw this at the movie theater when it originally came out. 3 times. Y'all would enjoy that whole movie/concert immensely. All great performances throughout.
The Staple singers are awesome on their own. Paired with the Band, it's a match made in music heaven.
The Band always seemed to be overlooked. Their music is great. They switch it up a lot. Not just one singer. Everyone has had a lead. Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Levon Helm, Richard Emmanuel & Robbie Robertson.
The Band s Robbie Robertson wrote this song and the group made a hit out of it and then sing with them once and its her song. No way. Watch Ringo all- star band and you'll see what I mean. Many musicians of all stripes join in on this song and they give Robbie his due. I dont like this version with the Staples at all!
@@gaillouise8310 I never said it was "her song". Just that The Band never gets the credit it truly deserves. I love the Band. My buddy from grade school used to play with them after Robbie left the second time. I've seen them live in Philly quite a few times.
@@maritamcnichol8849 When did Robbie rejoin The Band? I understood that he never played with them after The Last Waltz.
Such a classic song! Mavis Staples is something else....
Thank you for playing this song! Robbie Robertson is the fellow playing the Double neck Guitar/Mandolin. He wrote the song. He is Canadian, Mohawk native, and still active in a Solo career!
Another great rendition of this song from Robbie Robertson's Playing For Change group is definitely worth checking out.
and Ringo Starr...it should definitely be the next reaction.
Totally agree. Playing For Change has a huge list of songs that they covered with artists from all over the world, and I have yet to hear anything from them that wasn't great.
i need to read the comments because some one always beats me to it.
One of my all time favorite songs. Over fifty years old now. Thank you for reacting to this. A special treat is “Playing for change”. A worldwide collaboration of musicians doing this song for its 50 year anniversary. Ringo Starr from the Beatles plays the drums. And the songwriter Robbie Robertson from the band plays guitar 🎸 It is amazing….
Once you hear Levon do his verse, Mavis Staples sing her verse, and Pops Staples breath soul from deep inside, there is no version you will ever be satisfied with other than this. Pops was something God sent to us, I swear.
Been waiting on you to do this one. I saw The Band in concert in 1985. This is an amazing performance!
Wow, Wow, Wow, great one guy's. This from the movie "The Last Waltz" released in 1976. The movie follows The Band leading up to their farewell concert in 1976 on Thanksgiving Day in San Francisco. Robbie Robertson playing the duel guitar here wrote the song. Levon Helm on the drums sadly passed away a few years ago as did bass player Rick Danko who was on your car left and sang here also maybe 8 years or so ago. One more member has also passed. I think only two are left, sad. Two more great videos from this movie are "The Night They Drove Dixie Down" with Levon singing again. The other is from the last so g of the show when Bob Dylan and The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr along with a lot of famous performers who played that night did Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" What a way to finish the show. In 2019 Robbie Robertson hooked up with Ringo for the 50th anniversary of the release of the song "The Weight" They were joined in remotely by musicians from around the world. When the pandemic hit hard in 2020 this video kinda became a world anthem, please check it out, it's incredible. Peace ☮️✌️💕
"The Night they drove old Dixie down" is a masterpiece song. I wouldn't recommend that song though, for obvious reasons...
I haven’t heard this version before but I think it’s the best one yet. This is deep, and soothing. Thanks for covering it.
This is from the dvd "the last Waltz, the Band".Well worth a listen.🇨🇦
Great song. Levon Helm the drummer was a great musician. He often had jam sessions at his home in Woodstock. He also was a very good actor. He played Loretta Lynn's father in The Coal Miner's Daughter. My husband did a couple of fund raisers with Levon.
The Band were incredible. They toured like 300 days of the year. They were all virtuoso musicians. One of my all-time favorite units. This is from their final concert: The Last Waltz.
All of them can play multiple instruments, can all sing except Tre shy Garth hudson.
Ms.Mavis Staples and the Staple Singers are underated and an American treasure. Best singer in the world. Makes u feel everything
Notice the Staples daughter next to Pops toward the end of his verse- she gives him such a look of pride. Love it.
Ha I always say to myself she loves hearing her daddy sing
True true..good one..
Guy playing DOUBLE GUITAR is Robbie Robinson (R.I.P) & Levon Helm on drums & singing (R.I.P.) started THE BAND!!! Love you guys!! ❤❤
One of my favorite songs. Never heard it with the black singers. Damn they are good and made the song ten times better. All you people who take the weight know this song well. We always take the weight while people play.
I've watched many reactions to this song but BJ is the only one who already knew the song and both groups. Please react to the heart-wrenching "It makes no difference" from the same concert.
"I'll Take You There" is a great song from The Staples
Highly recommend more listens to "The Band". Huuuugely influential on the music industry of the time. Check out the songs:
"Up on cripple creek"
"The night they drove old Dixie down"
"Ophelia"
"The shape I'm in"
And many more
I love y’all so much for covering this. I loved you already, but this is pure gold. This is velvet. This is everything. Levon Helm the drummer was a dream. A magical genius. Robbie Robertson has his hand in everything good. Check out Daniel Lanios which he collaborated with
That was a lot of talented people on the stage at one time there. You must now listen to It Makes No Difference by The Band from the same Last Waltz concert. Believe me you will not be disappointed
Rick Danko's vocal on that song is incredible. It might be Robbie's best composition.
@@John_Chu I truly think it is the most expressive vocals I've ever heard. The first time I heard that song Dankos vocals amazed me and some 45 or 50 years later nothing has changed. No one sings like Rick Danko
This actually came from a movie called The last waltz it was their final concertthey actually started out as Bob Dylan's backup band and was always just introduced as the band
You have to do "it makes no difference" from this concert. It's amazing.
Agree. Great performance.
Danko was sublime on that.
Insane drummer singer of the Band, and the Stable's also killing it.
One of the most talented bands in American/Canadian history. Teaming up with the Staples was an iconic moment in rock and roll history. When you team up two of the best... you get perfection! BTW... My dog is named Levon after the great Levon Helm. RIP Levon Helm!
Robbie, just one of many talented Native Americans out there! He says in an interview that the song is about experiences he had when he was 16, traveling from Canada to Mississippi Delta. To start the song, he did look inside his Martin guitar and saw where they are made and the rest kinda flowed. 🎶🎵
His wonderful mother was Mohawk and his father was a white Jewish gentleman. Robbie was born and raised in Toronto.
Asia, I admire your affinity for lead singers playing drums. Two famous songs come to mind in this regard, Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight" and Don Heley drumming for the Eagles on "Hotel California". I am sure there are lots more, but those are just two of immediate recollection. I always enjoy both of you two doing these reactions, your personalities are infectious. TY.
Don Brewer of Grand Funk
Gil Moore with Triumph
I love Mavis Staples. She's 83 and the only surviving member of The Staple Singers. Come Go With Me, Let's Do It Again, Be What You Are and I'll Take You There are all bangers by The Staple Singers!
Great song about helping your friend and neighbor! The Band was huge in the 70’s and we all love their genius singing and song writing! Check out The Last Waltz, unreal performances by iconic legends and of course the band! One of my favorite DVD’s!!! Love you guys!
There are always those elements from the back story of any work of art. Stories come from a reservoir of experiences combined with the writers words. Throw in some imagination for good measure and that sh*t can get real (and real deep)! As to this song's message, you can't go deeper than relieving a fellow human of their burden, helping to lift it from their weary shoulders.
The guitarist, Robbie Robertson wrote this song. Yes! I used to perform this with my high school rock band in ‘69!!
You must watch the "Last Waltz" in its entirety .. It has some real great music. It is perhaps my all-time favorite LIVE concert films. Start to finish .. you won't be disappointed.
Good on you for recognizing the Staples. Your Dad raised you well!!!
You literally made a dream come true for me reacting to this song, with these artists. BRAVO
The one who wrote the majority of these numbers is Robbie Robertson, the one playing the double-neck guitar.
We Get By by Mavis Staples is such a dope album
At the very end you hear Mavis Staples whisper "Beautiful!" Great song and legends playing/singing it.
I’m a 60 year old man that grew up on this, I actually cry every time I hear this song done in this show, musical perfection 😎
The guitarist was Robbie Robertson, the Band member who wrote most of the Bands music including the Weight. He was the guy who kept this group together and gave them the music that made the band The Band. Robbie was a Mohawk who's ancestors fought on the Canadain/British side when the US war of independance occurred. These Iroquios moved to Canada when the war ended. Much of his music was actually historic including the Weight, The Night They Drove Ol Dixie Down and Evangeline.
The song “Caravan”, with Van Morrison, is the best song on that double disc album.
I love Van the Man leg kicks in the performance
The Last Waltz, documentary and last concert of The Band, you must Watch the movie on your own. Special guest Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters , Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Dr. John, Neil Diamond, Ronnie the hawk Hawkins, Paul Butterfield, and more, at the end Ringo Starr, and Ronnie Woods
I wish we as Americans got along like the folks in this song. The world would be a better place. Harmony. The Nazareth referred to in the song is a town in eastern Pennsylvania that they are talking about. The home of guitar maker Martin.
This is my favorite version to one of my all time favorite songs.
R.I.P
Levon Helm Drums Vocals
Rick Danko Bass Vocals
Richard Manuel Piano vocals.
This came from a concert movie by Martin Scorsese called "The Last Waltz" . It had a lot of guest performers and was their last live performance.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Waltz
I'm from Nazareth PA. and my name is Luke, song has a very special place for me!✌🤘
This collaboration between The Band and The Staples Singers was the final song performed in the iconic "The Last Waltz" - A 1978 Martin Scorsese documentary of the final live performance of The Band. The Band decided to do their final performance at The Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, which was the first venue they played together. In addition to all the classic "The Band songs, there were a number of superstar guest performers - Ronny Hawkins, Dr. John, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, and Bob Dylan. The guys in The Band felt that there had not been a "right message" stated to end the documentary, so this fantastic arrangement was put together. The Staples (especially Mavis and "Pops") were an unparalleled gospel group, and the members of The Band have their musical roots closely tied to gospel and soul music. No finer way to end this amazing documentary!!!
Deeply spiritual song ...
Nazareth , Moses , Luke and the Devil !
Fun fact - if you’ve seen the movie ‘Shooter’ with Mark Wahlberg ,,,the drummer is the old gunsmith man they go and see in Tennessee ! Levon Helm was his name ...
RIP !
Great song ! BJ you hit the deeper meaning brother !
Asia’s take is also valid !
Some songs are meant to hit on many levels , this is one for sure !
The band was Bob Dylan's band , there were so great by them selfs , throw in The Staples with Mavis running with those great runs and omg what a treat ! I love both bands always have. great reaction guys :)
Loved watching this...Mavis, I am not certain, may be the only still with us today. I can listen to the Band, the Staples, and Miss Mavis forever...she is a treasure still singing and giving to us all today.
This was from the documentary film "The Last Waltz" which covers their final concert. The very next song is another classic called "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and is my favorite version of that song, It features a horn section arranged by the great Allen Toussaint!
This song, this arrangement with the Stables, leaves me with a warm feeling and a sense that maybe we can resolve our problems and move on to a better place for all folks.
Staples
First off, props for the Elly De La Cruz hat.
What you have here is a singing drummer, Mr Robertson (RIP) and that wonderful disjointed into lick. Robbie is the master of soulful licks, fills and solos, Rick Danko and his totally cool manic body jerks and killer turn with his verse. The Staple Singers took the song from really good to masterpiece.
The song weaves bible tales throughout its story but the main theme is what’s living in a small town all about. Colorful characters and some hard luck. Nazareth refers to the town in Pennsylvania where one of Robbie’s guitars was made. Seeing a label inside the guitar stating the guitar was made in Nazareth gave him the push to write the song
Martin Guitars are made in Nazareth, Pennslyvania - that just kind of struck Robbie Robertson - and he used it as the core of the song. He simply looked inside the guitar, and the name was there.
Mavis gives me goosebumps every time...!!!
Love The Band and the Staples are great. The Last Waltz is an amazing musical documentary
Great Tune and 2 Great Groups of performers . Had the privilege to see Miss Mavis staples Live when she was backing up Elton John on his Tour in the states back in 2012
This is from the band's film called The Last Waltz which is documentation of their farewell concert!! Many top musicians of the time played with the band on stage for that film!!!
+1 for The Staples. One of the great gospel groups that too many people don't know about.
Love this verson of the bands weight, the group were 4 canadians and one badass drummer Tennessee. The staples are amazing in what ever they sing
I grew up 12 miles from Woodstock. I met Levon when I was doing some work at his house. He took me over to his studio and gave me a personal tour, what a thrill.
That short backstage looking jam at the end showed Robbie Robertson on guitar. The Band's base player was on the fiddle and the guy blowing the harp plays keys with The Band. The old timer on the guitar is Pops Staples and his three daughters with the wonderful Mavis singing lead.
This show (the last waltz) was the best performance of all time. So many legends present and performing.
This lady Asia can take over a screen like no other. Great job guys.
The song was part of The Band's last concert, which was made into a movie by Martin Scorcese called The Last Waltz and is well worth watching.
Levon Helm on the drums. Originally from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas (although they say from Marvell which is just a few miles north) I lived near there for the first 3 decades of my life. Levon is gone but his memory will live on forever in these songs.
A wonderful part on that song is as the screen fades to black, you just see and hear Mavis Staples whisper the word "Beautiful" .. it sums up the entire clip in one word as spoken by one of the performers.
A very soulful beautiful group, and great, great song.
Great reaction! Thanks for doing this one! How about 'The Night They Drove ol' Dixie Down'? Another classic.
Me too!
I love the Chicago radio that influences all southern bands, just like everyone they heard.
Exposing young people to great soulful music of the past is wonderful. It brings us all together.. music that is.. thanks!!
The Band 1st album was a big influence on Roger Waters / Pink Floyd
Referring to "Music from Big Pink" by The Band, Roger said:
"That one record changed everything for me. After Sgt. Pepper, it's the most influential record in the history of rock and roll. It affected Pink Floyd deeply, deeply, deeply. Philosophically, other albums may have been more important, like Lennon's first solo album. But sonically, the way the record's constructed, I think Music from Big Pink is fundamental to everything that happened after it."
Wow. I've always been an admirer of The Band but I guess I'd better pull out my vinyl LP and give it a long overdue listen!
Great song. Robbie is the guy playing the red double guitar. The original version was just with "The Band". This performance was I think from a documentary about "The Band", titled "The Last Waltz".
Just an incredible song, especially with the Staples chiming in. They turned a great song into a phenomenal song!
One of my favorite reactions y’all have done 🫶. This is one of my favorite songs too! Thanks to both of your beautiful souls 💙✌🏻
This song is so MUCH America. Oh America, how I will miss thee when your gone. Until that, keep on fighting.
You should watch the entire documentary, called The Last Waltz. It was The Band's final time get together. Packed with appearances from everyone that they worked with in their 16 years together. It's well worth your time.
What a beautiful, powerful review. Too overcome with feelings when I hear this song to say more, except thank you. Thank you.
I like this version. I have been a fan of the band for years. Some may ask are they country are they rock. I say they are simply beautiful lay back smooth music. Over the years many great performers had turns playing with them George Harrison Bob Dylan and nowthe Stalptons. All in all just great music to listen to.
Four Canadian guys, sounding as “southern” as their drummer (Arkansas) the great Levon Helm. Robbie Robertson wrote the lyrics for all their songs. Try “Up On Cripple Creek “ next. R.I.P. Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel.. The Staples really made this version my favourite.
Levon Helm was a masterful musician. He did some acting later in his life. He played Loretta Lynn's father in the film Coal Miners Daughter.
Love this song, I can't wait to here your jam reaction. I bought the "Band Greatest hits for this. "I have to add, I was coming home on a country road at 3 am. And it was a foggy night after a 12 shift, in 2001. My parents knew this song. But, it became mine. It is awesome!
Drummer is the late, great, Levon Helm... his library is extensive, but some of his best work is the last two albums he did... Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt... some of my favorites is 'when I go away', 'growing trade' and 'a train robbery'. His voice changed after his bout with throat cancer. They told him he would never talk again... and instead... he released two of his best albums... Cool Cat from Arkansas.
My all time fave song by my all time fave band. It don't get any better than that.
I don't know if you are aware that Bob Dylan & The Band played together for a while. They have a great collection of music together. "I Shall be Released - Bob Dylan & The Band (1976)"
Amen to that, I Shall Be Released is a heartrending masterpiece!
