I don't get it, he's making so many misplays it almost seems intentional. Edit: For anyone seeing this comment in the future: After watching 100 more episodes, I can say without a doubt in my mind he's actually this bad. It's not intentional.
that first run brought my hopes up. his deckbuilding was ok, his plays werent optimal but ill take it. but then the floor essentially left him with a bag full of gold, dead at first boss and egg proceeds to wreck the train lol
If he doesn't like looking to the left of the screen, he could at least play cards until it won't let him play any more. He even missed some zero cost attacks about halfway through the second run
It actually hurts me every time you have more than 3 energy and you don't realise , because you try and play as fast as possible, so you missplay all the time and have leftover energy and attacks you could have made.
Egg doesn't know the difference between fast plays and making fast decisions. Needs to figure out that Fast play means doing damage more than defending, not getting through your turns as quickly as possible.
Slowly crossing the line between "lovable idiot" and "actually physically painful to watch". Case in point: 3 cards to play, Outmaneuver, Defend, Strike - you mill over which one to use, then end your turn without using any, letting the energy go to waste and gaining nothing for it. There's trying to get an encounter over with quickly and then there's just headbutting your keyboard :l
If he had used those two strikes he would've killed the raider... also if he'd used caltrops he would've dealt 6 more damage with it and had a 2 in 5 chance of drawing a strike/neutralize for kill instead of caltrops again. It's actually just the worst of all possible scenarios
Manny Calavera lol, same here, the worst is that it seems like he doesnt even look at his energy during half his turns, but always tries energy synergies
i found it very hard to watch this episode... he was wildly making misplays and straight up commenting about his plays.. like how do you not see the misplays as you are talking thru your entire turn.....
Nl, you can check the map before you pick the blessing, so if there is an early shop, you should take the 250 gold becuz u can remove the curse relatively soon.
Naw but what Htown says makes more sense cause you make more gold overall you would still get alot more than 100 gold and if you wanna remove multiple cards you can get rid of more latter on when it matters more
If i was a game developer, i would definetly sponsor you. Your bad plays makes pp trigger so much to the point where they buy the game to play it right. I still love you 😍
No joke. I got Hollow Knight and Dead Cells purely because I decided I could do better at than NL was and I am about 2 obvious bad plays (so about 5 minutes of the next video most likely) away from grabbing this for the same reason. Really good marketing campign
I'm not quite ready to drop just over $20 (USD-AUD conversion rate sucks) on early access right now but the misplays keep making the idea look more and more palatable
To be fair, a lot of noobs make the same mistake of picking 2 cost instead of a slightly weaker 1 cost card, it took me a bit of time to realize that most 2 cost cards and almost all 3 cost cards are utter crap.
Footwork and caltrops are shit (caltrops worst) caltrops it s only usefull in some situacion a especifics onex like birds and you get birds like 2 of 50 battels. Normaly the hard part of this game are bosses and pretty much all boses hit only 1 time. So waste of resorces. Footwork is bad you can pick it but most of the time is shit is much better to take the 5 block draw 2 cards or just 8-11 armor. And you need to get or a free turn to take real value (like the metallacier) or get on the first draw
The problem is he doesn't know his speed limit. I know he doesn't want to play too slow for entertainment purposes, and he's doing commentary and stuff as well, but all he needs to do is go a tiny bit slower, at least always checking if he can use all of his energy at the end of his turn...
has tingsha, and is the silent, but doesnt take unload; it even gave him a second chance from the boss also, doesnt take catalyst for a sucker punch instead 25:40
NL, to clarify a bit; since the Silent is so reliant on not taking damage, Footwork is pretty hard carry especially if you get it early. It can be the difference between playing one block card or two in a round, and when you're Frail, Dexterity's your best friend.
Just a helpful tip, NL. Prepared is not good. Having prepared has the exact same benefit as not having prepared. You just draw whatever the next card is, but without having to discard a card.
Cliff upgraded prepared is alright if you're digging for something specific. Also great with tingsha relic he had in his second run (although it didn't show up this time)
I have a feeling this might become the new "issac"... i can see him playing this for a fairly long time, the game is only in the alpha and he's still unlocking more cards which changes the dynamics of the game. Also he's 17 episodes in with only 1 win. Sounds like the potential to be a long running series if i've ever heard of one
All I can really say is pay more attention to your available energy and the Tingsha relice is great if you can find a Storm of Steel. Oh, and Footwork is a good card.
This episode we learn the importance of taking that little bit extra time each turn in order to make sure the path you chose is the best one. This means making sure you are not forgetting something, but also to consider different plays for a moment before commiting to your play. Esspecially once players become more familiar with the game there is a moment where you think you know how the cookie crumbles and can play without taking much time to think things through, however most of the time this leads to minor missplays that can absolutely stack up, thus taking just a moment before commiting to the play to ask yourself "is there anything better I could do?" is gonna increase your sucess rate, esspecially since you might be able to irk out another reward early on which can increase the overall runs power later. There is no reason to rush, just take all the time you need and it will benefit you!
from now on, would be nice if every turn, before ending, you said out loud "im going to end my turn, because i have 0 energy, and no free cards that can be played"
reflex is pretty good if im being honest. you have a lot of ways to discard, prep being a big one. and getting extra draws while not having to drop usable cards is always a plus.
I read the comments, I watched egg daddy misplay the spire, and then I watched others correctly slay the spire. I finally got the game, and I wanted to thank nl for introducing me to such a cool game. It hurts to watch, but I hope you continue to release videos of you having fun.
You can't blame you deck when you misplay almost every bloody round!!!! You literally said that you know enemies usually become stronger the longer the fights go.... Discards attacks when enemies will attack for 6....
does he realize that there is no frikin clock ? its like a toddler trying to speak with adults but not knowing words an thus going "bblblblblblblblblblblbbl"
pretty sure he got it figured out atm - "backlog future time" says he got 2 back to back wins this is basicly just venting since NL doesnt read yt comments
My hand is sore from hitting my head. And my soul is dying..... it's dying slowly!!!!! But like a bad car crash I cant look away. Please Egg...... please for the love of god use all your energy.
A little tip, if you see this, consider defensive options higher as the silent. without many weakness cards and tempting offensive card try to pick the +2 dex card, or cheap cycle cards. Good luck, the silent is harder to get used to, but when you understand the neccesity of defending your hp, since it doesnt regen your results will improve
Nl i feel for your first run. So much potential, and a combo of relatively minor misplays and bad luck led to death. That said, seriously look at your energy and hand every time you want to end turn. D-.
Egg you keep ending turn with 1 energy left, even when you only had 3 to start a turn with... if you aren't doing that, youre ending turns with 0 cost dmg cards in your hand...
NL, when fighting the giant seashell consider just passing your turn until you have a decent damage hand. It's not much but it can make for a good openener.
NL here's a tip for you. You can calculate how much damage you do and need to block between card draws. This will help you play faster without compromising your plays.
23:40 "If we had chose to take some damage it would have made the difference." NO: if you used all five energy by taking two more strikes and not ending your turn after an outmaneuver play, THAT would have made the difference.
In the same fight he uses Neutralize with Weaken 1 on an enemy not attacking and later doesn't play Leg Sweep with Weaken 2 at all "because we don't need Weaken this turn". Oh lord.
At 22:59. He didn’t play caltrops so he could play outmaneuver, then he didn’t spend the extra energy he gained and missed out on 12 damage. It hurt my soul.
Hey, NL, here's a good tip for advanced players! You have a gauge on your bottom left that shows how much energy you have at any given point. Keep an eye on it!
Hey NL I've come across a rather nifty combo as the Ironclad. It involves exhume+ and Charon's ashes. Exhume+ is 0 energy and if you can get two of them you can go infinite and kill anything in the way. Might get nerfed in the future but i figured i'd share the information while it's as powerful as it is. Best of luck with future runs and loving the content thus far
the comments section is quickly becoming more entertaining than the video, and that's saying something... The sheer amount of misplays is actually hilarious.
Every time I see a Slay the Spire video from NL... I wanna start the game up. But then I remember that I'll just fail the run while everyone else is perfect all the time. So instead, Northernlion, if you can read this! I know you can't carry me! But I can cheer you on! You can do it!!! Also hOi am fan. EDIT: Okay, especially after this episode my faith in the egg has been cracked...
I am in pain
28:50
Egg : "i hate to toss outmaneuver like that"
ME : YEAH BECAUSE YOU DIDNT HAD TO you had 1 energy left EGG
I watched Austin's stream of StS last night, and coming back to NL reality has been tough.
I don't get it, he's making so many misplays it almost seems intentional.
Edit: For anyone seeing this comment in the future: After watching 100 more episodes, I can say without a doubt in my mind he's actually this bad. It's not intentional.
that first run brought my hopes up. his deckbuilding was ok, his plays werent optimal but ill take it. but then the floor essentially left him with a bag full of gold, dead at first boss and egg proceeds to wreck the train lol
everything hurts.
“I want to start with 4 energy...”
NL, you don’t even use 4 energy when you have it!
I think NL actually just wants to tilt all the people who get triggered out of the comments now.
Then again, there will be nobody left...
Preach
He doesn't even use 3 energy when he has it, the silly Egg.
NL not realising that he has extra energy is the most triggering thing ever.
he only took 3 extra dmg on that first elite so it's kinda eh don't really care
He failed to kill a thief because he ended his turn with 2 energy and 2 strikes. I can't watch this anymore.
seeing 100 comments about it is mmore triggering i think
If he doesn't like looking to the left of the screen, he could at least play cards until it won't let him play any more. He even missed some zero cost attacks about halfway through the second run
Ending his turn with 0 energy cost cards in hand is pretty bad too
It actually hurts me every time you have more than 3 energy and you don't realise , because you try and play as fast as possible, so you missplay all the time and have leftover energy and attacks you could have made.
It is like NL needs a popup saying "You have unspent energy. Are you sure you want to be bad?"
Or also when he discards a dagger spray to keep and use a strike. Hurts my soul
Egg doesn't know the difference between fast plays and making fast decisions. Needs to figure out that Fast play means doing damage more than defending, not getting through your turns as quickly as possible.
That play against the first boss when he had 5 energy actually hurt me. He kept two defends and a survivor when the enemy was dealing six damage.
I mean the cards literally light up if they can still be played if you hover the end turn button. You basically have to be blind not to notice it.
Slowly crossing the line between "lovable idiot" and "actually physically painful to watch".
Case in point: 3 cards to play, Outmaneuver, Defend, Strike - you mill over which one to use, then end your turn without using any, letting the energy go to waste and gaining nothing for it.
There's trying to get an encounter over with quickly and then there's just headbutting your keyboard :l
the ice cream relic would be either his best friend or his worst enemy
Duuuude, if this irks you that bad you need to get a life outside of UA-cam.
23:00 i just dont know if i can take it anymore, something has truly broken inside NL's brain
I shouted very loud.
That was such a good play, you always want to play as little energy as possible right?
If he had used those two strikes he would've killed the raider... also if he'd used caltrops he would've dealt 6 more damage with it and had a 2 in 5 chance of drawing a strike/neutralize for kill instead of caltrops again.
It's actually just the worst of all possible scenarios
HE'S JUST DONE IT AT 28:45 AGAIN
He's scrambled
- gets the perfect discard relic
- proceeds to force a poison deck
just nl things™
And then like halfway through that run he has 2 good poison cards and goes for the other option. Focus really helps with deck building.
Tingsha? Thats a discard relic
you're right, i edited it. all these misplays are really doing me in...
Manny Calavera lol, same here, the worst is that it seems like he doesnt even look at his energy during half his turns, but always tries energy synergies
the "when discarded draw a card" card he passed up paiiiined me. i go whole runs without seeing those.
Ayyy everybody welcome back to northernlion misplays the spire
lol. i see what u did there.
It's making me so stressed out but I still wanna watch my favourite UA-camr 😭
My dude, slow down and think before you act.
Hope your backlog has some improvements soon.
Mr. Hippopotamus He doesn't read comments. Like :"if i don't see the problem, it isn't there...."
Angeal Reaper That's a little unfair because he listens a lot on Twitter, YT comments are just too toxic most of the time
i found it very hard to watch this episode... he was wildly making misplays and straight up commenting about his plays.. like how do you not see the misplays as you are talking thru your entire turn.....
It's not toxic if they're right.
Legendary Valky I'm just saying, people are much more helpful and respectful on Twitter, so what would you chose?
"We're going for a full poison build." *Skips Noxious Fumes and Catalyst* REEEEEE
extremely triggered
when he passed catalyst on a poison deck it hurt
Sleepwalker Plis also, gets the discard synergy rare relic, decides to for "full poison build" instead of discard build.
"We don't want to go to shops on this run, but the combat tho it will give us some gold!" - The Scumegg
“I hate to just toss Outmaneuver like that”
Ends turn with one energy left
...while taking damage with Defend in hand during that turn :P
"I think footwork kinda sucks" Just gonna write this comment and then leave this video, peace
Charliehawkscreech Strangely he doesn't seem to rate powers at all
"but its better than a regular strike"
What did u just say about footwork my dude
28:55 WHAT are you *doing*
tossing outmaneuver with enough energy to play it because why play it? :P
He could also have played defend or strike, which just makes it worse
I screamed at my tv, nobody makes my blood boil like eggdaddy
28:50 please take your time NL. This was the 6th time this episode that you ended your turn with 1 or more Energy
Teppisch Productions "I really hate to lose outmanoeuvre like that"
If only this could have been avoided.
If only...
my favorite part of these videos is looking through the comments and clicking time stamps
Yep
This was the first time i've become genuinely grumpy watching your videos
Nl, you can check the map before you pick the blessing, so if there is an early shop, you should take the 250 gold becuz u can remove the curse relatively soon.
You want to remove other cards than curses though
Nimareza1 actually true
TheWhite2086 I'd get it regardless of his misplays lol...its quite fun :)
I'm not quite ready to drop just over $20 (USD-AUD conversion rate sucks) on early access right now but the misplays keep making the idea look more and more palatable
aaand dismissed Catalyst again. Brb actually dying.
Dave Rabbit To be fair, catalyst as a first pick up adds zero value initially. BUT THATS NOT WHY HE DOESNT PICK IT UP
it was the second run where he has a poison card in the deck already, and he took it over some nonsense.
dragoxl5
referring to his second run, he already had poison cards including Bouncing Flask which is already a pretty broken combo with Catalyst.
He picked bouncing flask over noxious fumes which is on average way better, as well as he skipped 2 catalysts which blows my mind
To be fair, a lot of noobs make the same mistake of picking 2 cost instead of a slightly weaker 1 cost card, it took me a bit of time to realize that most 2 cost cards and almost all 3 cost cards are utter crap.
"Footwork kinda sucks" lol I have no words
"If you don't have block at the end of your turn gain 6 block." - Nah man, I'd rather use one energy to block for 5.
HEYEVERYBODY Welcome back to Me Missing My Energy!
I'm sorry egg, I can't take the misplays anymore, I'm not watching another episode of this sorry. You sold me on the game tho and I've be loving it
has Deadly Poison and Bouncing Flask in his deck, takes Sucker Punch instead of Catalyst... xD
22:59 PRESS FOR INSTANT PAIN
this was the biggest misplay because he would have killed him before he escaped
...he totally forgot that he played outmaneuver just 10seconds ago did he?
Footwork actually decent tho, egg
Calltrops on the other hand is total garbage.
Caltrops can help kill the thorny bois on the 3rd floor
Footwork is actually great....
Caltrops isn't garbage lol, it destroys the bird enemies and book of stabbing. Basically any enemy that does multiple weak hits.
Footwork and caltrops are shit (caltrops worst)
caltrops it s only usefull in some situacion a especifics onex like birds and you get birds like 2 of 50 battels.
23:00 *actually* what is wrong with you
👏STOP👏ENDING👏TURN👏WITH👏ENERGY👏LEFT👏
When NL tossed Outmaneuver at 28:55 i lost my mind
Then he throws away a free Neutralize one minute later
"Patience, you must have, my young Padawan"
The problem is he doesn't know his speed limit. I know he doesn't want to play too slow for entertainment purposes, and he's doing commentary and stuff as well, but all he needs to do is go a tiny bit slower, at least always checking if he can use all of his energy at the end of his turn...
"This Northernlion guy has 600 videos on this game. I think I'll start watching them so I can learn how to get better myself."
-Me, prior to episode 1
JESUS CHRIST, check your energy before ending your turn, eggman. Pleasepleaseplease.
Sweet candied christ... He has 2 energy and 2 attacks.... He passes.... Why? Why NL? Why?
has tingsha, and is the silent, but doesnt take unload; it even gave him a second chance from the boss
also, doesnt take catalyst for a sucker punch instead 25:40
Derpy Cookie He's a madman!!
23:00 xDDD
28:48 :3
7:40
will he ever learn?
23:00 actually killed me
Vanitas Vanitatum Et Omnia Vanitas the answer is no. Hurt me more daddy.
NL, to clarify a bit; since the Silent is so reliant on not taking damage, Footwork is pretty hard carry especially if you get it early. It can be the difference between playing one block card or two in a round, and when you're Frail, Dexterity's your best friend.
*WATCH YOUR OWN EPISODE REFLECT UPON WHAT YOU'VE DONE AND SUFFER LIKE WE DO!!!!!!!*
29:56 I have no words.......
Just a helpful tip, NL. Prepared is not good. Having prepared has the exact same benefit as not having prepared. You just draw whatever the next card is, but without having to discard a card.
Cliff upgraded prepared is alright if you're digging for something specific. Also great with tingsha relic he had in his second run (although it didn't show up this time)
It's also good for enemies that put dead cards into your deck, and for decks with curses in them.
All this flying is hell on my knees boss.
7:40 you done it, good job egghead...
i missed this one :O
NL, please... For the love of God... Watch your energy counter.
Hey NL, no judgement advice here, look at these things every time before hitting END TURN!
ENERGY, potions, HP, relics and draw pile.
Oh man choosing cards with discard benefits would only be good if you had a discard relic... kek
i freakin love this series
Next round, 0 cost card, does damage, no downside, doesn't play it.
Starts with relic that damages for discards
*chooses not to take every discard card he comes across*
The synergistic plays baby 😎
Questionmark rooms are so good always look to go into them when you can
Genius , got the discard relic , decided instantly for poison
So many turns passed with energy left and cards to play. That being said, I'm really enjoying the series. You're the reason I bought the game.
You missed a tinted rock.
Love the series, NL. Keep it going!
Aged like fine wine
@@PlymouthGuru I completely forgot i made this comment. Now i'm disppointed it's not the top comment because it actually became true for a bit
All I can really say is pay more attention to your available energy and the Tingsha relice is great if you can find a Storm of Steel. Oh, and Footwork is a good card.
I can deal with most misplays, but that turn at 22:55 actually made me flinch.
At 30:50 with the relic that does 3 damage per discard unload would have been so strong.
There is no reason to rush, just take all the time you need and it will benefit you!
please go to more questions-marks, you can get relics and other good stuff and most of the time you don't lose so much HP
from now on, would be nice if every turn, before ending, you said out loud "im going to end my turn, because i have 0 energy, and no free cards that can be played"
I have never been as tilted as this by a Northernlion episode of any caliber
I only get through half of these episodes when they come out and then later in the day I come back and im like " I swear I finished this "
reflex is pretty good if im being honest. you have a lot of ways to discard, prep being a big one. and getting extra draws while not having to drop usable cards is always a plus.
I read the comments, I watched egg daddy misplay the spire, and then I watched others correctly slay the spire. I finally got the game, and I wanted to thank nl for introducing me to such a cool game. It hurts to watch, but I hope you continue to release videos of you having fun.

NL: Discards Dagger Spray
NL: Plays Strike for less damage than Dagger Spray
NL: Losses to Boss due to lack of damage
"Alright I need to slow down and think out all my attacks "
* proceeds to end turns half way through and have left over energy every single turn*
8:32 why did you do that
does he realize that there is no frikin clock ? its like a toddler trying to speak with adults but not knowing words an thus going "bblblblblblblblblblblbbl"
tweet him politely for change my man
pretty sure he got it figured out atm - "backlog future time" says he got 2 back to back wins
this is basicly just venting since NL doesnt read yt comments
Sinvicta is challenging him to races
I'm so invested in this series, was actually upset when the 600 gold shop was stolen from us.
23:00 egg, you had 2 more energy left!
This series made me buy the game & I just beat my first run, FeelsGoodMan.
My hand is sore from hitting my head. And my soul is dying..... it's dying slowly!!!!! But like a bad car crash I cant look away. Please Egg...... please for the love of god use all your energy.

23:40 "If we had chose to take some damage it would have made the difference." NO: if you used all five energy by taking two more strikes and not ending your turn after an outmaneuver play, THAT would have made the difference.
You don't have this game in a playlist yet and it's driving me crazy.
In the same fight he uses Neutralize with Weaken 1 on an enemy not attacking and later doesn't play Leg Sweep with Weaken 2 at all "because we don't need Weaken this turn". Oh lord.
Footwork is amazing you egg
1st floor skips gamble.....oh boy 3rd floor shop he doesnt buy burst....OH MY GOS
Is no one going to mention the random twitch sub photobomb at 14:10? "Smile, you're on candid camera!"
At 22:59. He didn’t play caltrops so he could play outmaneuver, then he didn’t spend the extra energy he gained and missed out on 12 damage. It hurt my soul.

EDIT: Okay, especially after this episode my faith in the egg has been cracked...
Is this what depression feels like. I feel physical and mental pain every episode, but i just keep coming back
Philosopher's Stone is actually the best choice there, even though it strengthens your enemies.
"Just playing it a little different than normal."
I cannot understand how this man throws away energy and yet still has won twice
